Combinatorial interpretation of the coefficients of the order polynomial of fence posets
Given a fence poset P , we define a new statistic on permutations, denoted by blP, that provides a combinatorial interpretation of the coefficients of the order polynomial of P , answering a question of Ferroni, Morales, and Panova (2025). Using the fact that the base polytope of a lattice path matroid can be decomposed into order polytopes of fence posets, we also obtain a combinatorial interpretation of the coefficients of the Ehrhart polynomial of the base polytope of Schubert matroids, answering a question of Stanley (1999). As an application of this statistic, we establish the first nontrivial lower bound for the linear coefficient of the Ehrhart polynomial of an order polytope. Finally, we conjecture generalizations of this statistic to skew-shape posets and circular fence posets.
Ehrhart positivity for lattice path matroids
We prove that all lattice path matroids are Ehrhart positive. This unifies and generalizes numerous results on the Ehrhart positivity of matroids developed over the last two decades. We rely on our previous work on the positivity of order polynomials of fences. Our main result supports the conjecture by Ferroni, Jochemko, and Schröter (2022) on the Ehrhart positivity of positroids. Furthermore, our main result implies that all Schubert matroids are Ehrhart positive, which thus settles a conjecture by Fan and Li (2024), and supports a conjecture by Monical, Tokcan, and Yong (2019) on the Ehrhart positivity of Schubitopes.

On subdivisions of the permutahedron and flags of lattice path matroids
In this manuscript we study the subdivisions of the permutahedron $Π_n$ into two subpolytopes corresponding to flags of positroids, which are in particular flags of lattice path matroids (LPFMs). A subpolytope $P_{[u,v]}$ of $Π_n$ is a Bruhat Interval Polytope (BIP) if $P_{[u,v]}$ is the convex hull of all the permutations (viewed as points in $\RR^n$) in the interval $[u,v]$ in the Bruhat order of $§_n$. We show that the coarsest subdivisions we obtain into LPFMs are the only subdivisions of $Π_n$ via hyperplane splits, into subpolytopes corresponding to BIPs. More specifically, we describe the hyperplanes whose intersection with $Π_n$ give rise to BIPs. Hence, these subdivisions are polytopes coming from points in the complete nonnegative flag variety.
Chow classes of matroids and standard Young tableaux
We study the Chow classes of arbitrary matroids in the Grassmannian. We develop a new combinatorial approach for computing them, by first focusing on snake matroids and then extending our results via valuativity to any matroid. Our main contribution identifies the Poincaré dual of the Chow class of a snake matroid with a specific ribbon Schur function, providing an explicit formula for its coefficients in the Schubert basis as the number of standard Young tableaux of a given shape with a prescribed descent set. This agrees with a formula by Klyachko for the uniform matroid. As consequences, we recover and simplify classical results such as Gessel and Viennot's enumeration of permutations with fixed descent sets, and formulas for the volume of lattice path matroids. Furthermore, we demonstrate the power of our findings by proving that certain Schubert coefficients are positive for all connected paving matroids.

Hamiltonian connectivity of some base-cobase graphs
There has been wide interest in understanding which properties of base graphs of matroids extend to base-cobase graphs of matroids. A significant result of Naddef and Pulleyblank (1984) shows that the $1$-skeleton of any $(0,1)$-polytope is either a hypercube, or Hamiltonian-connected, i.e. there is a Hamiltonian path connecting any two vertices. In particular, this is true for base graphs of matroids. A natural question raised by Farber, Richter, and Shank (1985) is whether this extends to base-cobase graphs. First, we use the polytopal approach to show Hamiltonian connectivity of base-cobase graphs of series-parallel extensions of lattice path matroids. On the other hand, we show that this method extends to only very special classes related to identically self-dual matroids. Second, we show that base-cobase graphs of wheels and whirls are Hamiltonian connected. Last, we show that the regular matroid $R_{10}$ yields a negative answer to the question of Farber, Richter, and Shank.

A construction that preserves the configuration of a matroid, with applications to lattice path matroids
The configuration of a matroid $M$ is the abstract lattice of cyclic flats (flats that are unions of circuits) where we record the size and rank of each cyclic flat, but not the set. One can compute the Tutte polynomial of $M$, and stronger invariants (notably, the $\mathcal{G}$-invariant), from the configuration. Given a matroid $M$ in which certain pairs of cyclic flats are non-modular, we show how to produce a matroid that is not isomorphic to $M$ but has the same configuration as $M$. We show that this construction applies to a lattice path matroid if and only if it is not a fundamental transversal matroid, and we enumerate the connected lattice path matroids on $[n]$ that are fundamental; these results imply that, asymptotically, almost no lattice path matroids are Tutte unique. We give a sufficient condition for a matroid to be determined, up to isomorphism, by its configuration. We treat constructions that yield matroids with different configurations where each matroid is determined by its configuration and all have the same $\mathcal{G}$-invariant. We also show that for any lattice $L$ other than a chain, there are non-isomorphic transversal matroids that have the same configuration and where the lattices of cyclic flats are isomorphic to $L$.
Shellability of the quotient order on lattice path matroids
The concept of a matroid quotient has connections to fundamental questions in the geometry of flag varieties. In previous work, Benedetti and Knauer characterized quotients in the class of lattice path matroids (LPMs) in terms of a simple combinatorial condition. As a consequence, they showed that the quotient order on LPMs yields a graded poset whose rank polynomial relates to a refinement of the Catalan numbers. In this work we show that this poset admits an EL-labeling, implying that the order complex is shellable and hence enjoys several combinatorial and topological properties. We use this to establish bounds on the Möbius function of the poset, interpreting falling chains in the EL-labeling in terms of properties of underlying permutations. Furthermore, we show that this EL-labeling is in fact a Whitney labeling, in the sense of the recent notion introduced by González D'León and Hallam.

Rook matroids and log-concavity of $P$-Eulerian polynomials
We define and study rook matroids, the bases of which correspond to non-nesting rook placements on a skew Ferrers board. We show that rook matroids are closed under taking duals and direct sums but not minors. Rook matroids are also a subclass of transversal matroids, positroids, and bear a subtle relationship to lattice path matroids that centers around not having the quaternary matroid $Q_{6}$ as a minor. The enumerative and distributional properties of non-nesting rook placements stand in contrast to that of usual rook placements: the non-nesting rook polynomial is not real-rooted in general, and is instead ultra-log-concave. We leverage this property together with a correspondence between rook placements and linear extensions of a poset to show that if $P$ is a naturally labeled width two poset, then the $P$-Eulerian polynomial $W_{P}$ is ultra-log-concave. This takes an important step towards resolving a log-concavity conjecture of Brenti (1989) and completes the story of the Neggers--Stanley conjecture for naturally labeled width two posets.

Transversal matroids and the half plane property
We focus on checking the validity of the half-plane property on two prominent classes of transversal matroids, namely lattice path matroids and bicircular matroids. We show that lattice path matroids satisfy the half-plane property. Subsequently, we show an explicit example of a bicircular matroid that is not a positroid and discuss the negative correlation properties of bases of transversal matroids. We prove that sparse paving matroids do not satisfy the Rayleigh property, which helps us gain new perspectives about conjectures on negative correlation in basis elements of matroids in general.
Lattice Path Delta Matroids
We initiate the study of a type $C_n$ generalization of the lattice path matroids defined by Bonin, de Mier, and Noy. These are delta matroids whose feasible sets are in bijection with lattice paths which are symmetric along the main diagonal. We describe deletion, contraction, enveloping matroids, and the homogeneous components of these delta matroids in terms of the combinatorics of symmetric lattice paths. In the second half, we study the convex geometry of the feasible polytopes of lattice path delta matroids. We show that these polytopes decompose into the feasible polytope of special lattice paths corresponding to intervals in the type $C_n$ Gale order whose related Richardson variety is a toric variety. Further, these special polytopes inherit a unimodular triangulation from Stanley's Eulerian triangulation of the hypercube. As a consequence, the volume of these polytopes is the proportion of permutations with specific ascent sets.
Characterizing positroid quotients of uniform matroids
We study two-step flag positroids $(P_1, P_2)$, where $P_1$ is a quotient of $P_{2}$. We provide a complete characterization of all two-step flag positroids that contain a uniform matroid, extending and completing a partial result by Benedetti, Chávez, and Jiménez. To contrast general positroids with the special case of lattice path matroids, we show that the containment relations of Grassmann necklaces and conecklaces fully characterize flag lattice path matroids, but are insufficient for general flag positroids. Additionally, we prove that the decorated permutations of any elementary quotient pair are related by a cyclic shift, resolving a conjecture of Benedetti, Chávez and Jiménez.

Efficient Representation of Lattice Path Matroids
Efficient deterministic algorithms to construct representations of lattice path matroids over finite fields are presented. They are built on known constructions of hierarchical secret sharing schemes, a recent characterization of hierarchical matroid ports, and the existence of isolating weight functions for lattice path matroids whose values are polynomial on the size of the ground set.

Lattice path matroidal subdivisions, Positive Tropical Grassmannian and Amplituhedron
We introduce the notion of lattice path matroidal subdivisions, or LPM subdivisions for short, and show that these subdivisions are regular and hence the weight vectors for them lie in the Dressian. This leads us to explore the structure of the set of these weights inside the Dressian and owing to the fact that Lattice path matroids are positroids, we move to the positive Dressian which in turn is equal to the positive tropical Grassmannian, an object of immense interest currently in Physics. This is related to the amplituhedron and positive configuration space, which we describe here and wish to explore these connections further.

The excluded minors for the intersection of bicircular and lattice path matroids
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 118 (2024) • View PublicationBIB
The classes of bicircular matroids and lattice path matroids are closed under minors. The complete list of excluded minors for the class of lattice path matroids is known, and it has been recently shown that the analogous list for the class of bicircular matroids is finite. In this paper, we establish the complete list of excluded minors for the class of matroids that is the intersection of these two classes. This resolves a recently posed open problem.
On lattice path matroid polytopes: alcoved triangulations and snake decompositions
We study lattice path matroid polytopes using their alcoved triangulation. We characterize Gorenstein lattice path matroid polytopes, yielding a new class of matroids satisfying the unimodality conjecture of de Loera, Haws, and K{ö}ppe. Further, we characterize matroids whose polytopes are order polytopes as a special class of lattice path matroids, called snakes. Finally, we give combinatorial interpretations of the volumes and $h^*$-vectors of lattice path matroids of rank $2$ based on their snake decomposition.
Lattice path bicircular matroids

Lattice path matroids and bicircular matroids are two well-known classes of transversal matroids. In the seminal work of Bonin and de Mier about structural properties of lattice path matroids, the authors claimed that lattice path matroids significantly differ from bicircular matroids. Recently, it was proved that all cosimple lattice path matroids have positive double circuits, while it was shown that there is a large class of cosimple bicircular matroids with no positive double circuits. These observations support Bonin and de Miers' claim. Finally, Sivaraman and Slilaty suggested studying the intersection of lattice path matroids and bicircular matroids as a possibly interesting research topic. In this work, we exhibit the excluded bicircular matroids for the class of lattice path matroids, and we propose a characterization of the graph family whose bicircular matroids are lattice path matroids. As an application of this characterization, we propose a geometric description of $2$-connected lattice path bicircular matroids.
Oriented cobicircular matroids are $GSP$
Published in Discrete Mathematics Volume 347, Issue 1, January 2024 • View PublicationBIB
Colourings and flows are well-known dual notions in Graph Theory. In turn, the definition of flows in graphs naturally extends to flows in oriented matroids. So, the colour-flow duality gives a generalization of Hadwiger's conjecture about graph colourings, to a conjecture about coflows of oriented matroids. The first non-trivial case of Hadwiger's conjecture for oriented matroids reads as follows. If $\mathcal{O}$ is an $M(K_4)$-minor free oriented matroid, then $\mathcal{O}$ has a now-where $3$-coflow, i.e., it is $3$-colourable in the sense of Hochstättler-Nešetřil. The class of generalized series parallel ($GSP$) oriented matroids is a class of $3$-colourable oriented matroids with no $M(K_4)$-minor. So far, the only technique towards proving that all orientations of a class $\mathcal{C}$ of $M(K_4)$-minor free matroids are $GSP$ (and thus $3$-colourable), has been to show that every matroid in $\mathcal{C}$ has a positive coline. Towards proving Hadwiger's conjecture for the class of gammoids, Goddyn, Hochstättler, and Neudauer conjectured that every gammoid has a positive coline. In this work we disprove this conjecture by exhibiting an infinite class of strict gammoids that do not have positive colines. We conclude by proposing a simpler technique for showing that certain oriented matroids are $GSP$. In particular, we recover that oriented lattice path matroids are $GSP$, and we show that oriented cobicircular matroids are $GSP$.

Lattice path matroids and quotients
Published • View PublicationBIB
We characterize the quotients among lattice path matroids (LPMs) in terms of their diagrams. This characterization allows us to show that ordering LPMs by quotients yields a graded poset, whose rank polynomial has the Narayana numbers as coefficients. Furthermore, we study full lattice path flag matroids and show that -- contrary to arbitrary positroid flag matroids -- they correspond to points in the nonnegative flag variety. At the basis of this result lies an identification of certain intervals of the strong Bruhat order with lattice path flag matroids. A recent conjecture of Mcalmon, Oh, and Xiang states a characterization of quotients of positroids. We use our results to prove this conjecture in the case of LPMs.
Ehrhart Theory of Paving and Panhandle Matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that the base polytope $P_M$ of any paving matroid $M$ can be systematically obtained from a hypersimplex by slicing off certain subpolytopes, namely base polytopes of lattice path matroids corresponding to panhandle-shaped Ferrers diagrams. We calculate the Ehrhart polynomials of these matroids and consequently write down the Ehrhart polynomial of $P_M$, starting with Katzman's formula for the Ehrhart polynomial of a hypersimplex. The method builds on and generalizes Ferroni's work on sparse paving matroids. Combinatorially, our construction corresponds to constructing a uniform matroid from a paving matroid by iterating the operation of stressed-hyperplane relaxation introduced by Ferroni, Nasr, and Vecchi, which generalizes the standard matroid-theoretic notion of circuit-hyperplane relaxation. We present evidence that panhandle matroids are Ehrhart positive and describe a conjectured combinatorial formula involving chain forests and Eulerian numbers from which Ehrhart positivity of panhandle matroids will follow. As an application of the main result, we calculate the Ehrhart polynomials of matroids associated with Steiner systems and finite projective planes, and show that they depend only on their design-theoretic parameters: for example, while projective planes of the same order need not have isomorphic matroids, their base polytopes must be Ehrhart equivalent.
The Young matroid: A multiset extension of the Catalan matroid to arbitrary Young diagrams
Introduced by Ardila (J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 2003), the Catalan matroid is obtained by defining the bases of the matroid using Dyck paths from $(0,0)$ to $(n,n)$. Further research has gone into the topic, with variants like lattice path matroids (introduced by Bonin, de Mier, and Noy (J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 2003)) and shifted matroids (introduced independently by Klivans (2003), and Ardila) being studied intensively. In this short note, we introduce the Young matroid, an extension of the Catalan matroid, where the bases are defined using the standard Young tableaux of a fixed shape. This extension necessarily involves the consideration of independent multisets and multiset bases.
