Non-attacking rook placements on crossword grids
We introduce the notion of a non-attacking rook placement on a crossword grid. A crossword grid is a collection of white squares (which comprise across and down words) and black squares (which separate the words), and a complete non-attacking rook placement on such a grid is a subset of white squares which intersects every across and every down word exactly once. We prove an upper bound on the number of rook placements that a general grid can admit. We then study sparse grids in which no two black squares share an edge and show that rook placements on certain sparse grids correspond bijectively to alternating sign matrices with prescribed $-1$ entries. Specializing further to permutation grids, we prove that every permutation grid admits at least one rook placement, and characterize the permutations whose grids admit exactly one placement in terms of the Robinson--Schensted correspondence. Throughout, we pose a variety of conjectures and open questions.
Counting partial Latin rectangles and tridimensional rook placements with multisymmetric functions
We generalize Gessel's Formula for the number of Latin rectangles to partial Latin rectangles and non-attacking rook placements in a tridimensional chessboard. We also derive explicit short formulas for the generating series of the numbers of non-attacking rook placements on a chessboard with $2$ or $3$ levels. These series also count partial Latin rectangles with $2$ or $3$ rows.
The results are obtained following methods developed by MacMahon and Gessel for counting Latin squares and Latin rectangles, by means of scalar products of multisymmetric functions.
Normal ordering in the $(p,q)$-deformed generalized Weyl algebra. II: Interpretation in terms of rook placements
In this paper, we investigate the combinatorial structure arising from the $(p, q)$-deformed generalized Weyl algebra generated by variables $X, Y$, and $Z_p$, satisfying the $(p, q)$-commutation relations $XY-qYX=h Y^sZ_{p}, XZ_p=pZ_pX$, and $Z_pY=pYZ_p$, where $s\in \mathbb{N}_0$. Our primary objective is to use the normal ordering process defined by these relations to develop a novel model of $(p, q)$-deformed rook theory. Specifically, we introduce a new framework of $(p, q)$-deformed $s$-rook numbers derived from this normal ordering process. Utilizing these combinatorial models, we provide explicit combinatorial interpretations for the associated $(p, q)$-generalized Stirling numbers via rook placements on staircase boards. Our results extend several classical and recent formulations in the literature to the general $p\neq 1$ setting.
Enumeration of Nondegenerate $2 \times (k+1) \times k$ Hypermatrices
We consider the problem of enumerating hypermatrices of format $2 \times (k + 1) \times k$ over a finite field that have nonzero hyperdeterminant and whose nonzero entries are restricted to a plane partition. We conjecture an attractive product formula for the enumeration, and prove it in many cases. In general, we show that the enumeration is given (up to a power of $q - 1$) by a polynomial in $q$ with nonnegative integer coefficients, whose value at $q = 1$ enumerates a natural family of three-dimensional rook placements.
Switching rook polynomial of collections of cells
We explore the novel connection between rook placements on collections of cells, also known as pruned chessboards, and the algebraic properties of ideals generated by $2$-minors. We design an algorithm to compute the switching rook polynomial of a collection of cells and show that it coincides with the $h$-polynomial of the associated coordinate ring for all collections up to rank 10 and polyominoes up to rank 12. Motivated by this evidence, we conjecture that the correspondence holds in general, and we prove it for certain convex collections of cells by algebraic tools.
Rook placements and orbit harmonics
For fixed positive integers $n,m$, let $\mathrm{Mat}_{n\times m}(\mathbb{C})$ be the affine space consisting of all $n\times m$ complex matrices, and let $\mathbb{C}[\mathbf{x}_{n\times m}]$ be its coordinate ring. For $0\le r\le\min\{m,n\}$, we apply the orbit harmonics method to the finite matrix loci $\mathcal{Z}_{n,m,r}$ of rook placements with exactly $r$ rooks, yielding a graded $\mathfrak{S}_n\times\mathfrak{S}_m$-module $R(\mathcal{Z}_{n,m,r})$. We find one signed and two sign-free graded character formulae for $R(\mathcal{Z}_{n,m,r})$. We also exhibit some applications of these formulae, such as proving a concise presentation of $R(\mathcal{Z}_{n,m,r})$, and proving some module injections and isomorphisms. Some of our techniques are still valid for involution matrix loci.
An extension of Viennot's shadow to rook placements via orbit harmonics
For fixed positive integers $n,m,r$, let $\mathrm{Mat}_{n \times m}(\mathbb{C})$ be the affine space of $n \times m$ complex matrices with coordinate ring $\mathbb{C}[\mathbf{x}_{n \times m}]$. We define a homogeneous ideal $I_{n,m,r}$, where the graded quotient $\mathbb{C}[\mathbf{x}_{n \times m}]/I_{n,m,r}$ is obtained from the orbit harmonics deformation of the matrix loci corresponding to all rook placements of size at least $r$. By extending rook placements to elements in $\mathfrak{S}_{n+m-r}$ and applying Viennot's shadow line avatar of the Schensted correspondence, we compute the standard monomial basis of the quotient $\mathbb{C}[\mathbf{x}_{n \times m}]/I_{n,m,r}$ with respect to diagonal monomial orders. We also determine the graded $\mathfrak{S}_n\times\mathfrak{S}_m$-module structure of $\mathbb{C}[\mathbf{x}_{n \times m}]/I_{n,m,r}$.
Positroidal aspects of non-nesting rook placements
Rook matroids were recently introduced by the author and Alexandersson as matroids whose bases arise from certain restricted rook placements on a skew-shaped board. They were shown to be a subclass of transversal matroids and positroids. We further investigate the structural properties of rook matroids with an emphasis on the positroidal point of view. In particular, we characterize rook matroids in terms of Grassmann necklaces of positroids, answering a question of Lam (2024). Along the way, we give a new proof of the positroidal structure of rook matroids and determine an important subclass of their cyclic flats.
Hall--Littlewood expansions of chromatic quasisymmetric polynomials using linked rook placements
In this work, we obtain a Hall--Littlewood expansion of the chromatic quasisymmetric function arising from a natural unit interval order and describe the coefficients in terms of linked rook placements. Applying the Carlsson--Mellit relation between chromatic quasisymmetric functions and unicellular LLT polynomials, we also obtain a combinatorial description for the coefficients of the unicellular LLT polynomials expanded in terms of the modified transformed Hall--Littlewood polynomials.
Real-rootedness of rook-Eulerian polynomials
We introduce rook-Eulerian polynomials, a generalization of the classical Eulerian polynomials arising from complete rook placements on Ferrers boards, and prove that they are real-rooted. We show that a natural context in which to interpret these rook placements is as lower intervals of $312$-avoiding permutations in the Bruhat order. We end with some variations and generalizations along this theme.
Rook matroids and log-concavity of $P$-Eulerian polynomials
We define and study rook matroids, the bases of which correspond to non-nesting rook placements on a skew Ferrers board. We show that rook matroids are closed under taking duals and direct sums but not minors. Rook matroids are also a subclass of transversal matroids, positroids, and bear a subtle relationship to lattice path matroids that centers around not having the quaternary matroid $Q_{6}$ as a minor. The enumerative and distributional properties of non-nesting rook placements stand in contrast to that of usual rook placements: the non-nesting rook polynomial is not real-rooted in general, and is instead ultra-log-concave. We leverage this property together with a correspondence between rook placements and linear extensions of a poset to show that if $P$ is a naturally labeled width two poset, then the $P$-Eulerian polynomial $W_{P}$ is ultra-log-concave. This takes an important step towards resolving a log-concavity conjecture of Brenti (1989) and completes the story of the Neggers--Stanley conjecture for naturally labeled width two posets.

In this paper, we show that the Bruhat order on any sect of a symmetric variety of type $AIII$ is lexicographically shellable. Our proof proceeds from a description of these posets as rook placements in a partition shape which fits in a $p \times q$ rectangle. This allows us to extend an EL-labeling of the rook monoid given by Can to an arbitrary sect. As a special case, our result implies that the Bruhat order on matrix Schubert varieties is lexicographically shellable.
Weighted File Placements on Singleton Boards
In 2006, Briggs and Remmel gave a factorization theorem for $m$-level rook placements on singleton boards, a special subset of Ferrers boards. Subsequently, Barrese, Loehr, Remmel, and Sagan defined the $m$-weighted file placements to give a combinatorial interpretation to the aforementioned factorization theorem for all Ferrers boards. An unintended consequence of this definition is that the sum of the $m$-weights of file placements that are not $m$-level rook placements on a singleton board must be zero. In this paper, we attempt to illuminate this result by partitioning the set of file placements that are not $m$-level rook placements. We do so in such a way that it can be shown constructively that the sum of the $m$-weights on each partition must be zero using induction.
Large-scale Rook Placements
For each certain "nice" piecewise linear function $f:[0,1] \to [0,1]$, we consider a family of growing Young diagrams $\{λ(f,N)\}_{N=1}^{\infty}$ by enlarging the region under the graph of $f$. We compute asymptotic formulas for the number of rook placements of the shape $λ(f,N)$. We prove that the normalized cumulative X-ray of a uniformly random permutation, as the size of the permutation grows, exhibits a limit shape phenomenon.

In this paper, we shall construct a bijection between rook placements on double staircases (introduced by Josuat-Vergès in 2017) and increasing binary trees. We introduce two subclasses of rook placements on double staircases, which we call left and right-aligned rook placements. We show that their enumeration, while keeping track of a certain statistic, gives the $γ$-vectors of the Eulerian polynomials. We conclude with a discussion on a different bijection that fits in very well with our main bijection, and another discussion on generalising our main bijection. Our main bijection is a special case of a bijection due to Tewari (2019).
$DIII$ clan combinatorics for the orthogonal Grassmannian
Borel subgroup orbits of the classical symmetric space $SO_{2n}/GL_n$ are parametrized by $DIII$ $(n,n)$-clans. We group the clans into "sects" corresponding to Schubert cells of the orthogonal Grassmannian, thus providing a cell decomposition for $SO_{2n}/GL_n$. We also compute a recurrence for the rank polynomial of the weak order poset on $DIII$ clans, and then describe explicit bijections between such clans, diagonally symmetric rook placements, certain pairs of minimally intersecting set partitions, and a class of weighted Delannoy paths. Clans of the largest sect are in bijection with fixed-point-free partial involutions.
A Graph Theory of Rook Placements
Two boards are rook equivalent if they have the same number of non-attacking rook placements for any number of rooks. Define a rook equivalence graph of an equivalence set of Ferrers boards by specifying that two boards are connected by an edge if you can obtain one of the boards by moving squares in the other board out of one column and into a singe other column. Given such a graph, we categorize which boards will yield connected graphs. We also provide some cases where common graphs will or will not be the graph for some set of rook equivalent Ferrers boards. Finally, we extend this graph definition to the $m$-level rook placement generalization developed by Briggs and Remmel. This yields a graph on the set of rook equivalent singleton boards, and we characterize which singleton boards give rise to a connected graph.
Gradedness of the set of rook placements in $A_{n-1}$
A rook placement is a subset of a root system consisting of positive roots with pairwise non-positive inner products. To each rook placement in a root system one can assign the coadjoint orbit of the Borel subgroup of a reductive algebraic group with this root system. Degenerations of such orbits induce a natural partial order on the set of rook placements. We study combinatorial structure of the set of rook placements in $A_{n-1}$ with respect to a slightly different order and prove that this poset is graded.

We study the row-space partition and the pivot partition on the matrix space $\mathbb{F}_q^{n \times m}$. We show that both these partitions are reflexive and that the row-space partition is self-dual. Moreover, using various combinatorial methods, we explicitly compute the Krawtchouk coefficients associated with these partitions. This establishes MacWilliams-type identities for the row-space and pivot enumerators of linear rank-metric codes. We then generalize the Singleton-like bound for rank-metric codes, and introduce two new concepts of code extremality. Both of them generalize the notion of MRD codes and are preserved by trace-duality. Moreover, codes that are extremal according to either notion satisfy strong rigidity properties analogous to those of MRD codes. As an application of our results to combinatorics, we give closed formulas for the $q$-rook polynomials associated with Ferrers diagram boards. Moreover, we exploit connections between matrices over finite fields and rook placements to prove that the number of matrices of rank $r$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$ supported on a Ferrers diagram is a polynomial in $q$, whose degree is strictly increasing in $r$. Finally, we investigate the natural analogues of the MacWilliams Extension Theorem for the rank, the row-space, and the pivot partitions.

Matrices over a finite field having fixed rank and restricted support are a natural $q$-analogue of rook placements on a board. We develop this $q$-rook theory by defining a corresponding analogue of the hit numbers. Using tools from coding theory, we show that these $q$-hit and $q$-rook numbers obey a variety of identities analogous to the classical case. We also explore connections to earlier $q$-analogues of rook theory, as well as settling a polynomiality conjecture and finding a counterexample of a positivity conjecture of the authors and Klein.
