Multi-graded generic initial ideals, regularity, and the optimal colorful fractional Helly theorem for $d$-Leray complexes
A celebrated result of Bayer and Stillman from 1987 states that for a homogeneous ideal $I$ of a polynomial ring $S$, the regularities of $S/I$ and $S/\textrm{GIN}(I)$ are the same under the reverse lexicographic monomial ordering, where $\textrm{GIN}(I)$ is the generic initial ideal. If $R$ is a polynomial ring whose variables are subdivided into disjoint blocks of variables $X_1,\dots,X_c$, there is a natural multi-grading on $R$, and one can analogously define a multi-graded version of the generic initial ideal for any multi-homogeneous ideal $I$ of $R$. However, the full strength of the Bayer--Stillman Theorem fails in the multi-graded setting; there are multi-homogeneous ideals $I$ such that the regularities are not preserved after passing to the multi-graded generic initial ideal no matter the choice of monomial ordering.
We prove lower bounds on the regularity of $R/I$ in terms of almost regular sequences of the multi-graded generic initial ideal of $I$ restricted to each block of variables. Again, we use the reverse lexicographic monomial ordering, but interestingly, the lower bound result requires a particular choice of ordering on the variables.
As an application, we prove the optimal fractional Helly theorem for $d$-Leray simplicial complexes, a problem stemming from the work of Kim in 2017.
Associated primes of powers of closed neighborhood ideals and diameters of graphs
Let $G$ be a simple connected graph and $t \ge 2$ an integer. We prove that if the maximal homogeneous ideal is an associated prime of the $t$th power of the closed neighborhood ideal of $G$, then the diameter of $G$ is at most $7t - 8$. We further show that this bound is sharp for all $t \ge 2$.
Asymptotic $\mathrm{v}$-number of graded families of ideals and the Newton-Okounkov region
In this paper, we prove that for Noetherian graded families $\mathcal{I} = \{I_k\}_{k \ge 0}$ of homogeneous ideals, $\lim\limits_{k \to \infty} \frac{\mathrm{v}(I_k)}{k}$ exists, %equals $\lim\limits_{k \to \infty} \frac{α(I_k)}{k}$,
and is given by $\frac{α(I_r)}{r}$ for some $r \ge 1$, where $α(I)$ denotes the initial degree. Extending these results to integral closures, we show that \( \lim\limits_{k\to\infty}\frac{\mathrm{v}(\overline{I_k})}{k} = \lim\limits_{k\to\infty}\frac{α(\overline{I_k})}{k}=\lim\limits_{k\to\infty}\frac{\mathrm{v}(I_k)}{k}=\lim\limits_{k\to\infty}\frac{α(I_k)}{k} \). For monomial ideals, we provide a combinatorial interpretation of these limits via Newton--Okounkov regions $Δ(\mathcal{I})$. %demonstrating that they equal $λ(Δ(\mathcal{I}))$, the minimum coordinate sum among vertices of $Δ(\mathcal{I})$. This connection is further generalized to arbitrary homogeneous ideals using good valuations. We also establish that both $\operatorname{reg}(I_k)$ and $\mathrm{v}(I_k)$ are eventually quasi-linear functions of $k$ for any Noetherian graded family. %Under suitable conditions, we prove the strict inequality $\mathrm{v}(I_k) < \operatorname{reg}(I_k)$. For stable monomial ideal $I$ we show that $\mathrm{v}(I) < \operatorname{reg}(I)$. Finally, for zero-dimensional homogeneous ideal $I$ in a polynomial ring $S$, we prove that $\mathrm{v}(I) < e(S/I)$, where $e(S/I)$ denote the multiplicity.
Serre depth and local cohomology
We introduce a fundamental homological invariant, called Serre depth, which stratifies Serre's conditions in the same way that depth stratifies the Cohen-Macaulay property. We study the Serre depths of modules over arbitrary Noetherian local rings and over standard graded algebras over a field, extending the polynomial ring case due to Muta and Terai. Under mild hypotheses, we show that the $r$-th Serre depth of a finitely generated module $M$ measures the deviation of $M$ from satisfying Serre's condition $(S_r)$. The main results of the paper can be summarized as follows:
(i) We establish the basic properties of Serre depth and prove that it is invariant under completion.
(ii) If the base ring $R$ is a homomorphic image of a Gorenstein ring, we show that a finitely generated $R$-module $M$ is equidimensional and satisfies $(S_r)$ if and only if its $r$-th Serre depth equals its Krull dimension. Analogous statements are obtained for schemes.
(iii) For a homogeneous ideal in a standard graded polynomial ring over a field, we compare its Serre depths with those of its initial ideal.
(iv) We characterize the Serre depths of a monomial ideal in terms of its skeletons and prove that the Serre depths of sufficiently large powers of a monomial ideal stabilize; the proof uses Presburger arithmetic.
On the gradient of a monomial ideal
Let $K$ be a field of characteristic zero, let $I \subset S = K[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ be a homogeneous ideal, and let $\partial(I)$ be its gradient ideal. We study the relationship between $\mathrm{reg}\,I$ and $\mathrm{reg}\,\partial(I)$. While earlier work by Busé, Dimca, Schenck, and Sticlaru showed these regularities are generally incomparable for hypersurface ideals, we prove they remain incomparable even for monomial ideals with linear resolution, answering a question of J. Herzog. In fact, for any integers $a \in \mathbb{Z}$ and $b \ge - 1$, we construct monomial ideals $I$ and $J$ such that $\mathrm{reg}\,I - \mathrm{reg}\,\partial(I) = a$, $\mathrm{reg}\,\partial(J) - \mathrm{reg}\,J = b$ and $J$ has linear resolution. We introduce monomial ideals with differential linear resolution as those monomial ideals whose all iterated gradient ideals have linear resolution. We prove that polymatroidal ideals, equigenerated (strongly) stable ideals, powers of edge ideals with linear resolution, complementary edge ideals with linear resolution, and certain equigenerated squarefree monomial ideals with many generators satisfy this property.
An extension of Viennot's shadow to rook placements via orbit harmonics
For fixed positive integers $n,m,r$, let $\mathrm{Mat}_{n \times m}(\mathbb{C})$ be the affine space of $n \times m$ complex matrices with coordinate ring $\mathbb{C}[\mathbf{x}_{n \times m}]$. We define a homogeneous ideal $I_{n,m,r}$, where the graded quotient $\mathbb{C}[\mathbf{x}_{n \times m}]/I_{n,m,r}$ is obtained from the orbit harmonics deformation of the matrix loci corresponding to all rook placements of size at least $r$. By extending rook placements to elements in $\mathfrak{S}_{n+m-r}$ and applying Viennot's shadow line avatar of the Schensted correspondence, we compute the standard monomial basis of the quotient $\mathbb{C}[\mathbf{x}_{n \times m}]/I_{n,m,r}$ with respect to diagonal monomial orders. We also determine the graded $\mathfrak{S}_n\times\mathfrak{S}_m$-module structure of $\mathbb{C}[\mathbf{x}_{n \times m}]/I_{n,m,r}$.
Associated primes of the second power of closed neighborhood ideals of graphs
We study simple graphs for which the maximal homogeneous ideal is an associated prime of the second power of their closed neighborhood ideals. In particular, we show that such graphs must have diameter at most $6$, and that those with diameter $2$ must be vertex diameter-$2$-critical.
Mixed Segre zeta functions and their log-concavity
We introduce and study the mixed Segre zeta function of a sequence of homogeneous ideals in a polynomial ring. This function is a power series encoding information about the mixed Segre classes obtained by extending the ideals to projective spaces of arbitrarily large dimension. Our work generalizes and unifies results by Kleiman and Thorup on mixed Segre classes and by Aluffi on Segre zeta functions. We prove that this power series is rational, with poles corresponding to the degrees of the generators of the ideals. We also show that the mixed Segre zeta function only depends on the integral closure of the ideals. Finally, we prove that the homogenization of the numerator of a modification of the mixed Segre zeta function is denormalized Lorentzian in the sense of Brändén and Huh.
$F_σ$-ideals, colorings, and representation in Banach spaces
In recent works by L. Drewnowski and I. Labuda and J. Martínez et al., non-pathological analytic \( P \)-ideals and non-pathological \( F_σ\)-ideals have been characterized and studied in terms of their representations by a sequence \( (x_n)_n \) in a Banach space, as \( \mathcal{C}((x_n)_n) \) and \( \mathcal{B}((x_n)_n) \). The ideal \( \mathcal{C}((x_n)_n) \) consists of sets where the series \( \sum_{n \in A} x_n \) is unconditionally convergent, while \( \mathcal{B}((x_n)_n) \) involves weak unconditional convergence.
In this paper, we further study these representations and provide effective descriptions of \( \mathcal{B} \)- and \( \mathcal{C} \)-ideals in the universal spaces \( C([0,1]) \) and \( C(2^{\mathbb{N}}) \), addressing a question posed by Borodulin-Nadzieja et al. A key aspect of our study is the role of the space \( c_0 \) in these representations. We focus particularly on \( \mathcal{B} \)-representations in spaces containing many copies of \( c_0 \), such as \( c_0 \)-saturated spaces of continuous functions.
A central tool in our analysis is the concept of \( c \)-coloring ideals, which arise from homogeneous sets of continuous colorings. These ideals, generated by homogeneous sets of 2-colorings, exhibit a rich combinatorial structure. Among our results, we prove that for \( d \geq 3 \), the random \( d \)-homogeneous ideal is pathological,
we construct hereditarily non-pathological universal \( c \)-coloring ideals, and we show that every \( \mathcal{B} \)-ideal represented in \( C(K) \), for \( K \) countable, contains a \( c \)-coloring ideal. Furthermore, by leveraging \( c \)-coloring ideals, we provide examples of \( \mathcal{B} \)-ideals that are not \( \mathcal{B} \)-representable in \( c_0 \). These findings highlight the interplay between combinatorial properties of ideals and their representations in Banach spaces.
Partial Betti splittings with applications to binomial edge ideals
We introduce the notion of a partial Betti splitting of a homogeneous ideal, generalizing the notion of a Betti splitting first given by Francisco, Hà, and Van Tuyl. Given a homogeneous ideal $I$ and two ideals $J$ and $K$ such that $I = J+K$, a partial Betti splitting of $I$ relates some of the graded Betti of $I$ with those of $J, K$, and $J\cap K$. As an application, we focus on the partial Betti splittings of binomial edge ideals. Using this new technique, we generalize results of Saeedi Madani and Kiani related to binomial edge ideals with cut edges, we describe a partial Betti splitting for all binomial edge ideals, and we compute the total second Betti number of binomial edge ideals of trees.
Regular subdivisions, bounds on initial ideals, and categorical limits
Several known constructions relate initial degenerations of projective toric varieties and Grassmannians to regular subdivisions of appropriate point configurations. We define a general framework which allows for partial generalizations of these constructions to arbitrary projective schemes (as well as their very affine parts). We associate a point configuration $A$ with any homogeneous ideal $I$. We obtain upper and lower bounds on every initial ideal of $I$, defining them in terms of the regular subdivision of $A$ given by the same weight. Furthermore, both bounds are interpreted categorically via (co)limits over the face poset of the subdivision. We also investigate when these bounds are exact, showing that the respective weights form a subfan in the secondary fan of $A$.

We study scattering equations of hyperplane arrangements from the perspective of combinatorial commutative algebra and numerical algebraic geometry. We formulate the problem as linear equations on a reciprocal linear space and develop a degeneration-based homotopy algorithm for solving them. We investigate the Hilbert regularity of the corresponding homogeneous ideal and apply our methods to CHY scattering equations.

A major open question in the theory of Gorenstein liaison is whether or not every arithmetically Cohen--Macaulay subscheme of $\mathbb{P}^n$ can be G-linked to a complete intersection. Migliore and Nagel showed that, if such a scheme is generically Gorenstein (e.g., reduced), then, after re-embedding so that it is viewed as a subscheme of $\mathbb{P}^{n+1}$, indeed it can be G-linked to a complete intersection. Motivated by this result, we consider techniques for constructing G-links on a scheme from G-links on a closely related reduced scheme.
Polarization is a tool for producing a squarefree monomial ideal from an arbitrary monomial ideal. Basic double G-links on squarefree monomial ideals can be induced from vertex decompositions of their Stanley--Reisner complexes. Given a monomial ideal $I$ and a vertex decomposition of the Stanley--Reisner complex of its polarization $P(I)$, we give conditions that allow for the lifting of an associated basic double G-link of $P(I)$ to a basic double G-link of $I$ itself. We use the relationship we develop in the process to show that the Stanley--Reisner complexes of polarizations of stable Cohen--Macaulay monomial ideals are vertex decomposable.
We then introduce and study polarization of a Gröbner basis of an arbitrary homogeneous ideal and give a relationship between geometric vertex decomposition of a polarization and elementary G-biliaison that is analogous to our result on vertex decomposition and basic double G-linkage.
Macaulay Posets and Rings
Macaulay posets are posets in which an analog of the Kruskal-Katona Theorem holds. Macaulay rings (also called Macaulay-Lex rings) are rings in which an analog of Macaulay's Theorem for lex ideals holds. The study of both of these objects started with Macaulay almost a century ago. Since then, these two branches have developed separately over the past century, with the last link being the Clements-Lindström Theorem.
For every ring that is the quotient of a polynomial ring by a homogeneous ideal we define the poset of monomials. Under certain conditions, we prove a Macaulay Correspondence Theorem, a ring is Macaulay if and only if its poset of monomials is Macaulay. Furthermore, the tensor product of rings corresponds to the Cartesian product of the posets of monomials. This allows us to transfer results between rings and posets. By using this translation, we give several answers to a problem posed by Mermin and Peeva, a positive answer to Hoefel's question about applying Macaulay poset theory to ring theory, and deduce several other results in algebra and combinatorics.
A new proof of the Mermin-Murai Theorem on colored square free rings is presented by using star posets. We extend the Mermin-Murai Theorem to rings that are not square free. Using a result from Mermin and Peeva we give an answer to a question posed by Bezrukov and Leck. Some results of Chong also give answers to the Bezrukov-Leck problem. All of these results have a common feature. They involve the tensor product of rings whose Hasse graphs of the poset of monomials are trees. We call such rings, tree rings. We give a classification of Macaulay rings that are the tensor product of a tree ring. Finally, we show that there are Macaulay rings that are not the tensor product of tree rings, and present the first examples of Macaulay rings that are not quotients by a monomial ideal and not quotients by a toric ideal.
Combinatorial commutative algebra rules
An algorithm is presented that generates sets of size equal to the degree of a given variety defined by a homogeneous ideal. This algorithm suggests a versatile framework to study various problems in combinatorial algebraic geometry and related fields.
On the socle of Artinian algebras associated to graphs
Given a simple graph, consider the polynomial ring with coefficients in a field and variables identified with the edges of the graph. Given a non-empty even cardinality Eulerian subgraph and a choice of half of its edges, consider the homogeneous binomial obtained by taking the product of these edges minus the product of the remaining edges of the subgraph. We define a homogeneous ideal by taking as generators all binomials obtained in this way, varying the Eulerian subgraph and the choice of half of its edges, together with the squares of the variables of the ring. This ideal is related to the Eulerian ideal, introduced by Neves, Vaz Pinto and Villarreal. We call the corresponding quotient the Eulerian Artinian algebra associated to the graph. The goal of the present work is to study the socle of these algebras through the lens of graph theory. Our main results include a combinatorial characterization of a monomial basis of the socle, a characterization of Gorenstein Eulerian Artinian algebras in the case of bipartite graphs and the computation of the h-vector and socle degrees in the cases of a complete graph and a complete bipartite graph.

Nagel and Römer introduced the class of weakly vertex decomposable simplicial complexes, which include matroid, shifted, and Gorenstein complexes as well as vertex decomposable complexes. They proved that the Stanley-Reisner ideal of every weakly vertex decomposable simplicial complex is Gorenstein linked to an ideal of indeterminates via a sequence of basic double G-links. In this paper, we explore basic double G-links between squarefree monomial ideals beyond the weakly vertex decomposable setting.
Our first contribution is a structural result about certain basic double G-links which involve an edge ideal. Specifically, suppose $I(G)$ is the edge ideal of a graph $G$. When $I(G)$ is a basic double G-link of a monomial ideal $B$ on an arbitrary homogeneous ideal $A$, we give a generating set for $B$ in terms of $G$ and show that this basic double G-link must be of degree $1$. Our second focus is on examples from the literature of simplicial complexes known to be Cohen-Macaulay but not weakly vertex decomposable. We show that these examples are not basic double links of any other squarefree monomial ideals.
Powers of componentwise linear ideals: The Herzog--Hibi--Ohsugi Conjecture and related problems
In 1999 Herzog and Hibi introduced componentwise linear ideals. A homogeneous ideal $I$ is componentwise linear if for all non-negative integers $d$, the ideal generated by the homogeneous elements of degree $d$ in $I$ has a linear resolution. For square-free monomial ideals, componentwise linearity is related via Alexander duality to the property of being sequentially Cohen-Macaulay for the corresponding simplicial complexes. In general, the property of being componentwise linear is not preserved by taking powers. In 2011, Herzog, Hibi, and Ohsugi conjectured that if $I$ is the cover ideal of a chordal graph, then $I^s$ is componentwise linear for all $s \geq 1$. We survey some of the basic properties of componentwise linear ideals, and then specialize to the progress on the Herzog-Hibi-Ohsugi conjecture during the last decade. We also survey the related problem of determining when the symbolic powers of a cover ideal are componentwise linear.

Let $\mathbb{K}$ be a field and $R = \mathbb{K}[x_1, \ldots, x_n]$. We obtain an improved upper bound for asymptotic resurgence of squarefree monomial ideals in $R$. We study the effect on the resurgence when sum, product and intersection of ideals are taken. We obtain sharp upper and lower bounds for the resurgence and asymptotic resurgence of cover ideals of finite simple graphs in terms of associated combinatorial invariants. We also explicitly compute the resurgence and asymptotic resurgence of cover ideals of several classes of graphs. We characterize a graph being bipartite in terms of the resurgence and asymptotic resurgence of edge and cover ideals. We also compute explicitly the resurgence and asymptotic resurgence of edge ideals of some classes of graphs.

Given a homogeneous ideal $I \subseteq k[x_0,\dots,x_n]$, the Containment problem studies the relation between symbolic and regular powers of $I$, that is, it asks for which pair $m, r \in \mathbb{N}$, $I^{(m)} \subseteq I^r$ holds. In the last years, several conjectures have been posed on this problem, creating an active area of current interests and ongoing investigations. In this paper, we investigated the Stable Harbourne Conjecture and the Stable Harbourne -- Huneke Conjecture and we show that they hold for the defining ideal of a Complement of a Steiner configuration of points in $\mathbb{P}^{n}_{k}$. We can also show that the ideal of a Complement of a Steiner Configuration of points has expected resurgence, that is, its resurgence is strictly less than its big height, and it also satisfies Chudnovsky and Demailly's Conjectures. Moreover, given a hypergraph $H$, we also study the relation between its colourability and the failure of the containment problem for the cover ideal associated to $H$. We apply these results in the case that $H$ is a Steiner System.
