Overlap-Helly theorems
In this paper we introduce a generalization of Helly's theorem closely connected to Bárány-Gromov overlap theorems (also called selection lemmas). Our main result implies both the topological colorful Helly of Kalai and Meschulam and Karasev's topological centerpoint theorem. We further investigate the topological fractional Helly theorem from this overlap perspective, and show an overlap theorem for dense complexes (a continuous second selection lemma for tame maps).

Helly and Radon theorems for convex intersections containing $k$-flats
We study versions of results in combinatorial geometry related to families of convex sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$ whose intersection contains a $k$-dimensional affine space. We prove generalizations of the colorful Radon theorem, the fractional Helly theorem, the colorful Helly theorem, and the selection-structure Helly theorem. When $k=0$, our arguments give new proofs of the corresponding versions for points.

Multi-graded generic initial ideals, regularity, and the optimal colorful fractional Helly theorem for $d$-Leray complexes
A celebrated result of Bayer and Stillman from 1987 states that for a homogeneous ideal $I$ of a polynomial ring $S$, the regularities of $S/I$ and $S/\textrm{GIN}(I)$ are the same under the reverse lexicographic monomial ordering, where $\textrm{GIN}(I)$ is the generic initial ideal. If $R$ is a polynomial ring whose variables are subdivided into disjoint blocks of variables $X_1,\dots,X_c$, there is a natural multi-grading on $R$, and one can analogously define a multi-graded version of the generic initial ideal for any multi-homogeneous ideal $I$ of $R$. However, the full strength of the Bayer--Stillman Theorem fails in the multi-graded setting; there are multi-homogeneous ideals $I$ such that the regularities are not preserved after passing to the multi-graded generic initial ideal no matter the choice of monomial ordering. We prove lower bounds on the regularity of $R/I$ in terms of almost regular sequences of the multi-graded generic initial ideal of $I$ restricted to each block of variables. Again, we use the reverse lexicographic monomial ordering, but interestingly, the lower bound result requires a particular choice of ordering on the variables. As an application, we prove the optimal fractional Helly theorem for $d$-Leray simplicial complexes, a problem stemming from the work of Kim in 2017.
The Volume Helly Theorem in the plane, colorful version
We prove a colorful volume Helly theorem for convex sets in $\mathbb R^2$: There is a constant $V>0$ such that if $\mathfrak F_1,\mathfrak F_2,\mathfrak F_3,\mathfrak F_4$ are finite families of convex sets in $\mathbb R^2$ and if $|\bigcap_1^4F_i|\ge V$ for every transversal $F_i\in \mathfrak F_i,\; (i=1,\ldots,4)$, then $|\bigcap \mathfrak{F}_i|\ge 1$ for some $i$. Here $|A|$ is the Lebesgue measure of $A\subset \mathbb R^d$. The main ingredient is the following theorem. Let $Q_1,\ldots,Q_4\subset\mathbb R^2$ be convex quadrilaterals of area at most $1$, where of course each $Q_i$ is the intersection of 4 halfplanes. Then for every $Q_i$ there is one of these halfplanes $H_i$, say, such that $|\bigcap_1^4 H_i| \le 4096$.

On colorful generalizations of the Goodman--Pollack transversal problem
We establish a colorful, and more generally matroidal, solution to the problem of Goodman and Pollack on the existence of an $\mathbb{F}$-affine $k$-dimensional transversal to a family of convex sets in $\mathbb{F}^d$, where $0 \le k \le d - 1$ is an integer and $\mathbb{F} \in \{\mathbb{R}, \mathbb{C}\}$ is a field. Our results unify several classical and recent theorems. In the case $k=0$, we recover the colorful Helly theorem of Bárány and Lovász, together with a matroidal extension due to Kalai and Meshulam. In the opposite extremal case $k=d-1$, we obtain Holmsen's colorful and matroidal generalization of the Goodman-Pollack-Wenger theorem. Additionally, we extend the recent noncolorful solution of the Goodman-Pollack problem by McGinnis and the author. Our methods are topological. We introduce matroidal joins, defined as homotopy colimits of diagrams indexed by face posets of matroidal complexes, and derive estimates on their connectivity. The proof also relies on adaptations of nonexistence results for equivariant maps from Stiefel manifolds to spheres.

Helly Theorems for Generalized Turán Problems
Given a graph $T$ and a family of graphs $\mathcal{F}$, the generalized Turán number $\mathrm{ex}(n,T,\mathcal{F})$ is the maximum number of copies of $T$ in an $n$-vertex $\mathcal{F}$-free graph. We prove a general theorem which states that for any tree $T$, any family $\mathcal{F}$, and any integer $k$, either $\mathrm{ex}(n,T,\mathcal{F})$ is at least $Ω(n^{k+1})$ or at most $O(\mathrm{ex}(n,\mathcal{F})^{k})$, from which we derive a number of consequences. Our proofs rely on new variants of the classical Helly Theorem for trees which may be of independent interest. As far as we are aware, this is the first known application of Helly theorems for Turán type problems.

Rational Exponents for General Graphs
A rational number $r$ is a \textbf{realizable exponent} for a graph $H$ if there exists a finite family of graphs $\mathcal{F}$ such that $\mathrm{ex}(n,H,\mathcal{F})=Θ(n^r)$, where $\mathrm{ex}(n,H,\mathcal{F})$ denotes the maximum number of copies of $H$ that an $n$-vertex $\mathcal{F}$-free graph can have. Results for realizable exponents are currently known only when $H$ is either a star or a clique, with the full resolution of the $H=K_2$ case being a major breakthrough of Bukh and Conlon. In this paper, we establish the first set of results for realizable exponents which hold for arbitrary graphs $H$ by showing that for any graph $H$ with maximum degree $Δ\ge 1$, every rational in the interval $\left[v(H)-\frac{e(H)}{2Δ^2},\ v(H)\right]$ is realizable for $H$. We also prove a ``stability'' result for generalized Turán numbers of trees which implies that if $T\ne K_2$ is a tree with $\ell$ leaves, then $T$ has no realizable exponents in $[0,\ell]\setminus \mathbb{Z}$. Our proof of this latter result uses a new variant of the classical Helly theorem for trees, which may be of independent interest.

Helly-type theorems for separated $d$-intervals
A separated $d$-interval is defined as a disjoint union of $d$ convex sets from the real line $\mathbb R$. In this paper, we establish a series of Helly-type theorems for convexity spaces derived from separated $d$-intervals. Our results encompass the Radon number, Helly number, colorful Helly number, fractional Helly number, colorful fractional Helly theorem, $(p,q)$ theorem, and two kinds of colorful $(p,q)$ theorems for these convexity spaces. The primary tools employed in our proofs involve simplicial complexes and collapsibility.

Cohomological VC-density: Bounds and Applications
The concept of Vapnik-Chervonenkis (VC) density is pivotal across various mathematical fields, including discrete geometry, probability theory and model theory. In this paper, we introduce a topological generalization of VC-density. Let $Y$ be a topological space and $\mathcal{X}$ a family of closed subspaces of $Y$. For each $p \geq 0$, we define a number, $\mathrm{vcd}^{p}_{\mathcal{X}}$, which we refer to as the degree $p$ VC-density of the family $\mathcal{X}$. The classical notion of VC-density within this topological framework can be recovered by setting $p=0$. Our definition of degree $p$ VC-density extends to higher orders as well. For $p \geq 0$, $q \geq 1$, we define the degree $p$, order $q$ VC density $\mathrm{vcd}^{p,q}_{\mathcal{X}}$ of $\mathcal{X}$, which recovers Shelah's notion of higher order VC-density for $q$-dependent families when $p=0$. Our definition introduces a completely new notion when $p > 0$. We examine the properties of $\mathrm{vcd}_{\mathcal{X}}^p$ (as well as $\mathrm{vcd}^{p,q}_{\mathcal{X}}$) when the families $\mathcal{X}$ are definable in structures with some underlying topology (for instance, the Euclidean topology for o-minimal structures over $\mathbb{R}$, the analytic topology over $\mathbb{C}$, or the étale site for schemes over arbitrary algebraically closed fields). Our main result establishes that in any model of these theories \[ \mathrm{vcd}_{\mathcal{X}}^p \leq (p+1) \dim X, \] and more generally for any $q \geq 1$ \[ \mathrm{vcd}^{p,q}_{\mathcal{X}} \leq (p+q) \dim X. \] We give examples to show that our bounds are optimal. We also present combinatorial applications of our higher-degree VC-density bounds, deriving higher degree topological analogs of well-known results such as the existence of $\varepsilon$-nets and the fractional Helly theorem.
Colorful fractional Helly theorem via weak saturation
Two celebrated extensions of the classical Helly's theorem are the fractional Helly theorem and the colorful Helly theorem. Bulavka, Goodarzi, and Tancer recently established the optimal bound for the unified generalization of the fractional and the colorful Helly theorems using a colored extension of the exterior algebra. In this paper, we combinatorially reduce both the fractional Helly theorem and its colorful version to a classical problem in extremal combinatorics known as {weak saturation}. No such results connecting the fractional Helly theorem and weak saturation are known in the long history of literature. These reductions, along with basic linear algebraic arguments for the reduced weak saturation problems, let us give new short proofs of the optimal bounds for both the fractional Helly theorem and its colorful version without using exterior algebra.

Extensions of discrete Helly theorems for boxes
We prove extensions of Halman's discrete Helly theorem for axis-parallel boxes in $\mathbb{R}^d$. Halman's theorem says that, given a set $S$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$, if $F$ is a finite family of axis-parallel boxes such that the intersection of any $2d$ contains a point of $S$, then the intersection of $F$ contains a point of $S$. We prove colorful, fractional, and quantitative versions of Halman's theorem. For the fractional versions, it is enough to check that many $(d+1)$-tuples of the family contain points of $S$. Among the colorful versions we include variants where the coloring condition is replaced by an arbitrary matroid. Our results generalize beyond axis-parallel boxes to $H$-convex sets.
Colorful Intersections and Tverberg Partitions
The colorful Helly theorem and Tverberg's theorem are fundamental results in discrete geometry. We prove a theorem which interpolates between the two. In particular, we show the following for any integers $d \geq m \geq 1$ and $k$ a prime power. Suppose $F_1, F_2, \dots, F_m$ are families of convex sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$, each of size $n > (\frac{d}{m}+1)(k-1)$, such that for any choice $C_i\in F_i$ we have $\bigcap_{i=1}^mC_i\neq \emptyset$. Then, one of the families $F_i$ admits a Tverberg $k$-partition. That is, one of the $F_i$ can be partitioned into $k$ nonempty parts such that the convex hulls of the parts have nonempty intersection. As a corollary, we also obtain a result concerning $r$-dimensional transversals to families of convex sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$ that satisfy the colorful Helly hypothesis, which extends the work of Karasev and Montejano.

The Quantitative Fractional Helly theorem
Two celebrated extensions of Helly's theorem are the Fractional Helly theorem of Katchalski and Liu (1979) and the Quantitative Volume theorem of Bárány, Katchalski, and Pach (1982). Improving on several recent works, we prove an optimal combination of these two results. We show that given a family $\mathcal{F}$ of $n$ convex sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$ such that at least $α\binom{n}{d+1}$ of the $(d+1)$-tuples of $\mathcal{F}$ have an intersection of volume at least 1, then one can select $Ω_{d,α}(n)$ members of $\mathcal{F}$ whose intersection has volume at least $Ω_d(1)$. Furthermore, with the help of this theorem, we establish a quantitative version of the $(p,q)$ theorem of Alon and Kleitman. Let $p\geq q\geq d+1$ and let $\mathcal{F}$ be a finite family of convex sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$ such that among any $p$ elements of $\mathcal{F}$, there are $q$ that have an intersection of volume at least $1$. Then, we prove that there exists a family $T$ of $O_{p,q}(1)$ ellipsoids of volume $Ω_d(1)$ such that every member of $\mathcal{F}$ contains at least one element of $T$. Finally, we present extensions about the diameter version of the Quantitative Helly theoerm.

$k$-dimensional transversals for fat convex sets
We prove a fractional Helly theorem for $k$-flats intersecting fat convex sets. A family $\mathcal{F}$ of sets is said to be $ρ$-fat if every set in the family contains a ball and is contained in a ball such that the ratio of the radii of these balls is bounded by $ρ$. We prove that for every dimension $d$ and positive reals $ρ$ and $α$ there exists a positive $β=β(d,ρ, α)$ such that if $\mathcal{F}$ is a finite family of $ρ$-fat convex sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$ and an $α$-fraction of the $(k+2)$-size subfamilies from $\mathcal{F}$ can be hit by a $k$-flat, then there is a $k$-flat that intersects at least a $β$-fraction of the sets of $\mathcal{F}$. We prove spherical and colorful variants of the above results and prove a $(p,k+2)$-theorem for $k$-flats intersecting balls.

Helly theorem for affine spaces without dimensions
We prove a no-dimensional Helly theorem for affine spaces and convex sets using the unboundedness framework of Aronov, Goodman, and Pollack (Computational Geometry, 2002). This generalizes the fundamental result of Adiprasito, Bárány, Mustafa, and Terpai on the no-dimensional Helly theorem for points and convex sets (Discrete & Computational Geometry, 2020). Additionally, we establish the optimality of our result.

Extensions of the Colorful Helly Theorem for $d$-collapsible and $d$-Leray complexes
We present extensions of the Colorful Helly Theorem for $d$-collapsible and $d$-Leray complexes, providing a common generalization to the matroidal versions of the theorem due to Kalai and Meshulam, the ``very colorful" Helly theorem introduced by Arocha, Bárány, Bracho, Fabila and Montejano, and the ``semi-intersecting" colorful Helly theorem proved by Montejano and Karasev. As an application, we obtain the following extension of Tverberg's Theorem: Let $A$ be a finite set of points in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with $|A|>(r-1)(d+1)$. Then, there exist a partition $A_1,\ldots,A_r$ of $A$ and a subset $B\subset A$ of size $(r-1)(d+1)$, such that $\cap_{i=1}^r \text{conv}( (B\cup\{p\})\cap A_i)\neq\emptyset$ for all $p\in A\setminus B$. That is, we obtain a partition of $A$ into $r$ parts that remains a Tverberg partition even after removing all but one arbitrary point from $A\setminus B$.

Quantitative Helly-type Theorems via Hypergraph Chains
We propose a combinatorial framework to analyze quantitative Helly-type questions. Using this framework, we prove a Quantitative Fractional Helly Theorem with Fractional Helly Number 3d and a stability version of the Quantitative Helly Theorem of Bárány, Katchalski, and Pach.

How do 9 points look like in $E^3$?

The aim of this note is to give an elementary proof of the following fact: given 3 red convex sets and 3 blue convex sets in $\mathbb{E}^3$, such that every red intersects every blue, there is a line transversal to the reds or there is a line transversal to the blues. This is a special case of a theorem of Montajano and Karasev \cite{MK} and generalizes, in a sense, the colourful Helly theorem due to Lovász (cf. \cite{BL}).

Combinatorial properties of non-archimedean convex sets

We study combinatorial properties of convex sets over arbitrary valued fields. We demonstrate analogs of some classical results for convex sets over the reals (e.g. the fractional Helly theorem and Bárány's theorem on points in many simplices), along with some additional properties not satisfied by convex sets over the reals, including finite breadth and VC-dimension. These results are deduced from a simple combinatorial description of modules over the valuation ring in a spherically complete valued field.

Weak saturation of multipartite hypergraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given $q$-uniform hypergraphs ($q$-graphs) $F,G$ and $H$, where $G$ is a spanning subgraph of $F$, $G$ is called weakly $H$-saturated in $F$ if the edges in $E(F)\setminus E(G)$ admit an ordering $e_1,\dots, e_k$ so that for all $i\in [k]$ the hypergraph $G\cup \{e_1,\dots,e_i\}$ contains an isomorphic copy of $H$ which in turn contains the edge $e_i$. The weak saturation number of $H$ in $F$ is the smallest size of an $H$-weakly saturated subgraph of $F$. Weak saturation was introduced by Bollobás in 1968, but despite decades of study our understanding of it is still limited. The main difficulty lies in proving lower bounds on weak saturation numbers, which typically withstands combinatorial methods and requires arguments of algebraic or geometrical nature. In our main contribution in this paper we determine exactly the weak saturation number of complete multipartite $q$-graphs in the directed setting, for any choice of parameters. This generalizes a theorem of Alon from 1985. Our proof combines the exterior algebra approach from the works of Kalai with the use of the colorful exterior algebra motivated by the recent work of Bulavka, Goodarzi and Tancer on the colorful fractional Helly theorem. In our second contribution answering a question of Kronenberg, Martins and Morrison, we establish a link between weak saturation numbers of bipartite graphs in the clique versus in a complete bipartite host graph. In a similar fashion we asymptotically determine the weak saturation number of any complete $q$-partite $q$-graph in the clique, generalizing another result of Kronenberg et al.
