Overlap-Helly theorems
In this paper we introduce a generalization of Helly's theorem closely connected to Bárány-Gromov overlap theorems (also called selection lemmas). Our main result implies both the topological colorful Helly of Kalai and Meschulam and Karasev's topological centerpoint theorem. We further investigate the topological fractional Helly theorem from this overlap perspective, and show an overlap theorem for dense complexes (a continuous second selection lemma for tame maps).

Clique number and triangle densities in $C_4$-free graphs
For a $C_4$-free graph $G$ on $n$ vertices --- one with no induced cycle on four vertices --- we study the two-sided extremal problem for the triangle density $τ$: How large and how small can $τ$ be for given edge density $\varepsilon$ and clique-number density $κ= ω(G)/n$? We give lower and upper bounds for $τ$ in terms of $κ$ and $\varepsilon$. The two bounds sandwich $τ$, and their compatibility forces a lower bound for $κ$ in terms of $\varepsilon$. When the clique complex of $G$ is $2$-Leray over a field $\Bbbk$, the resulting bound on the clique-number density lies between the previous best $C_4$-free bound and the sharp chordal bound. It improves on the former {\it for every} $\varepsilon \in (0,1)$. The lower bound is elementary. The upper bound is homological, obtained by passing to the Stanley--Reisner ring of the clique complex. When the complex is $2$-Leray, its Betti table has at most two linear strands. The two first entries in the first strand encode edge and triangle densities, and the strong structural form of a Boij--Söderberg decomposition constrains what these entries can be, yielding the upper bound. For $2$-Leray graphs with no holes in the range $[4,g]$ we give a conjecturally sharp bound. We further ask questions concerning the triangle bound for any $C_4$-free graph.
Strong invariants and Tverberg numbers in convexity spaces
Helly, Carathéodory, and Radon numbers encode three kinds of finite certificates in a convexity space: for the emptiness of an intersection, for membership in a convex hull, and for the existence of intersecting hulls. We study exact versions of these certificates, in which a subfamily must preserve the whole intersection or a subset must preserve the whole hull. Our first main result shows that, for finite configurations in an arbitrary convexity space, five a priori different boundedness conditions are equivalent: VC-dimension, strong Helly number, strong Carathéodory number, comatching number, and strong Radon number (with the expected additive-one shift). We also obtain equivalent layered Tverberg-type decompositions and colorful consequences. The common mechanism is exposed by the bipartite incidence graph between points and a generating family. For finite spaces, the unique minimal generator yields a natural dual convexity space; we characterize double dualization and prove that the strong parameters are duality invariant. The same model gives a polynomial-size, $O(t^4)$, realization of Bukh's counterexample to the Calder-Eckhoff partition conjecture. Finally, we obtain the first Tverberg bound for separable convexity spaces that is simultaneously linear in the number of parts and polynomial in the Radon number. If an $S_3$-separable convexity space has Helly number $h$ and its halfspaces have VC-dimension $d$, then $r_t=O(dh\log h)\,t$; in particular, Radon number $r$ gives $r_t=O(r^2\log r)\,t$. The bound attains the weak-Eckhoff scale $O(rt)$ whenever the Helly number is bounded. For axis-parallel box convexity in $\mathbb{R}^k$, gives the optimal order $r_t=O(rt)$ uniformly in every dimension. This appears to be the first dimension-uniform estimate of weak-Eckhoff order for box convexity, whereas the previous direct theory was confined to dimension three.
A topological product Tverberg Theorem
We prove a generalization of the topological Tverberg theorem. One special instance of our general theorem is the following: Let $Δ$ denote the 8-dimensional simplex viewed as an abstract simplicial complex, and suppose that its vertices are arranged in a $3\times 3$ array. Then for any continuous map $f:Δ\to \mathbb{R}^3$ it is possible to partition the rows or the columns of the vertex array into two parts, such that the disjoint faces $σ$ and $τ$ induced by the two parts satisfy $f(σ)\cap f(τ) \neq \emptyset$. Our result also has consequences for geometric transversals and topological Helly.

The fractional Helly number for separable convexity spaces
A convex lattice set in $\mathbb{Z}^d$ is the intersection of a convex set in $\mathbb{R}^d$ and the integer lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$. A well-known theorem of Doignon states that the Helly number of $d$-dimensional convex lattice sets equals $2^d$, while a remarkable theorem of Bárány and Matoušek states that the fractional Helly number is only $d+1$. In this paper we generalize their result to abstract convexity spaces that are equipped with a suitable separation property. We also disprove a conjecture of Bárány and Kalai about an existence of fractional Helly property for a family of solutions of bounded-degree polynomial inequalities.

Helly type problems in convexity spaces
We report on some recent progress regarding combinatorial properties in convexity spaces with a bounded Radon number. In particular, we discuss the relationship between the Radon number, the colorful and fractional Helly properties, weak $\varepsilon$-nets, and $(p,q)$-theorems. As an application of the theory of convexity spaces we introduce new classes of uniform hypergraphs and show that they are $χ$-bounded.
Colorful Intersections and Tverberg Partitions
The colorful Helly theorem and Tverberg's theorem are fundamental results in discrete geometry. We prove a theorem which interpolates between the two. In particular, we show the following for any integers $d \geq m \geq 1$ and $k$ a prime power. Suppose $F_1, F_2, \dots, F_m$ are families of convex sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$, each of size $n > (\frac{d}{m}+1)(k-1)$, such that for any choice $C_i\in F_i$ we have $\bigcap_{i=1}^mC_i\neq \emptyset$. Then, one of the families $F_i$ admits a Tverberg $k$-partition. That is, one of the $F_i$ can be partitioned into $k$ nonempty parts such that the convex hulls of the parts have nonempty intersection. As a corollary, we also obtain a result concerning $r$-dimensional transversals to families of convex sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$ that satisfy the colorful Helly hypothesis, which extends the work of Karasev and Montejano.

Strong Erdős-Hajnal properties in chordal graphs
A graph class $\mathcal{G}$ has the strong Erdős-Hajnal property (SEH-property) if there is a constant $c=c(\mathcal{G}) > 0$ such that for every member $G$ of $\mathcal{G}$, either $G$ or its complement has $K_{m, m}$ as a subgraph where $m \geq \left\lfloor c|V(G)|\right\rfloor$. We prove that the class of chordal graphs satisfy SEH-property with constant $c = 2/9$. On the other hand, a strengthening of SEH-property which we call the colorful Erdős-Hajnal property was discussed in geometric settings by Alon et al. (2005) and by Fox et al. (2012). Inspired by their results, we show that for every pair $F_1, F_2$ of subtree families of the same size in a tree $T$ with $k$ leaves, there exists subfamilies $F'_1 \subseteq F_1$ and $F'_2 \subseteq F_2$ of size $θ\left( \frac{\ln k}{k} \left| F_1 \right|\right)$ such that either every pair of representatives from distinct subfamilies intersect or every such pair do not intersect. Our results are asymptotically optimal.

A colorful Goodman-Pollack-Wenger theorem
Published • View PublicationBIB
Hadwiger's transversal theorem gives necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a line transversal to a family of pairwise disjoint convex sets in the plane. These conditions were subsequently generalized to hyperplane transversals to general families of convex sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$ by Goodman, Pollack, and Wenger. Here we show a colorful genealization of their theorem which confirms a conjecture of Arocha, Bracho, and Montejano. The proof is topological and uses the Borsuk-Ulam theorem.

On a transversal theorem of Montejano and Karasev
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a new proof of a theorem of Montejano and Karasev regarding $k$-dimensional transversals to small families of convex sets. While their proof uses technical algebraic and topological tools, our proof is a simple application of the Borsuk-Ulam theorem. Additionally, in certain cases our result is stronger than the Montejano-Karasev theorem.
Intersection patterns in spaces with a forbidden homological minor
In this paper we study generalizations of classical results on intersection patterns of set systems in $\mathbb{R}^d$, such as the fractional Helly theorem or the $(p,q)$-theorem, in the setting of arbitrary triangulable spaces with a forbidden homological minor. Given a simplicial complex $K$ and an integer $b$, we say that a family $\mathcal{F}$ of subcomplexes of some simplicial complex $\mathcal{U}$ is a \emph{$(K,b)$-free cover} if (i) $K$ is a forbidden homological minor of $\mathcal{U}$, and (ii) the $j$th reduced Betti number $\tildeβ_j(\bigcap_{S\in {\mathcal{G}}}S,\mathbb{Z}_2)$ is strictly less than $b$ for all $0\leq j < \dim K$ and all nonempty subfamilies $\mathcal{G}\subseteq \mathcal{F}$. We show that for every $K$ and $b$, the fractional Helly number of a $(K,b)$-free cover is at most $μ(K)+1$, where $μ(K)$ is the maximum sum of the dimensions of two disjoint faces in~$K$. This implies that the assertion of the $(p,q)$-theorem holds for every $p \ge q > μ(K)$ and every $(K,b)$-free cover $\mathcal{F}$. For $b=1$ and a suitable $K$ this recovers the original $(p,q)$-theorem and its generalization to good covers. Interestingly, our results show that that the range of parameters $(p,q)$ for which the $(p,q)$-theorem holds is independent of $b$. Our proofs use Ramsey-type arguments combined with the notion of stair convexity of Bukh et al. to construct (forbidden) homological minors in cubical complexes.

Leray numbers of complexes of graphs with bounded matching number
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a graph $G$ on the vertex set $V$, the non-matching complex of $G$, $\mathsf{NM}_k(G)$, is the family of subgraphs $G' \subset G$ whose matching number $ν(G')$ is strictly less than $k$. As an attempt to generalize the result by Linusson, Shareshian and Welker on the homotopy types of $\mathsf{NM}_k(K_n)$ and $\mathsf{NM}_k(K_{r,s})$ to arbitrary graphs $G$, we show that (i) $\mathsf{NM}_k(G)$ is $(3k-3)$-Leray, and (ii) if $G$ is bipartite, then $\mathsf{NM}_k(G)$ is $(2k-2)$-Leray. This result is obtained by analyzing the homology of the links of non-empty faces of the complex $\mathsf{NM}_k(G)$, which vanishes in all dimensions $d\geq 3k-4$, and all dimensions $d \geq 2k-3$ when $G$ is bipartite. As a corollary, we have the following rainbow matching theorem which generalizes the result by Aharoni, Berger, Chudnovsky, Howard and Seymour: Let $E_1, \dots, E_{3k-2}$ be non-empty edge subsets of a graph and suppose that $ν(E_i\cup E_j)\geq k$ for every $i\ne j$. Then $E=\bigcup E_i$ has a rainbow matching of size $k$. Furthermore, the number of edge sets $E_i$ can be reduced to $2k-1$ when $E$ is the edge set of a bipartite graph.

Radon numbers and the fractional Helly theorem
A basic measure of the combinatorial complexity of a convexity space is its Radon number. In this paper we show a fractional Helly theorem for convexity spaces with a bounded Radon number, answering a question of Kalai. As a consequence we also get a weak epsilon-net theorem for convexity spaces with a bounded Radon number. This answers a question of Bukh and extends a recent result of Moran and Yehudayoff.

Large cliques in hypergraphs with forbidden substructures
A result due to Gyárfás, Hubenko, and Solymosi (answering a question of Erdös) states that if a graph $G$ on $n$ vertices does not contain $K_{2,2}$ as an induced subgraph yet has at least $c\binom{n}{2}$ edges, then $G$ has a complete subgraph on at least $\frac{c^2}{10}n$ vertices. In this paper we suggest a "higher-dimensional" analogue of the notion of an induced $K_{2,2}$ which allows us to generalize their result to $k$-uniform hypergraphs. Our result also has an interesting consequence in discrete geometry. In particular, it implies that the fractional Helly theorem can be derived as a purely combinatorial consequence of the colorful Helly theorem.
Two extensions of the Erdős-Szekeres problem
Published • View PublicationBIB
According to Suk's breakthrough result on the Erdos-Szekeres problem, any point set in general position in the plane, which has no $n$ elements that form the vertex set of a convex $n$-gon, has at most $2^{n+O\left({n^{2/3}\log n}\right)}$ points. We strengthen this theorem in two ways. First, we show that the result generalizes to convexity structures induced by pseudoline arrangements. Second, we improve the error term. A family of $n$ convex bodies in the plane is said to be in convex position if the convex hull of the union of no $n-1$ of its members contains the remaining one. If any three members are in convex position, we say that the family is in general position. Combining our results with a theorem of Dobbins, Holmsen, and Hubard, we significantly improve the best known upper bounds on the following two functions, introduced by Bisztriczky and Fejes Toth and by Pach and Toth, respectively. Let $c(n)$ (and $c'(n)$) denote the smallest positive integer $N$ with the property that any family of $N$ pairwise disjoint convex bodies in general position (resp., $N$ convex bodies in general position, any pair of which share at most two boundary points) has an $n$-membered subfamily in convex position. We show that $c(n)\le c'(n)\leq 2^{n+O\left(\sqrt{n\log n}\right)}$.

Nerves, minors, and piercing numbers

We make the first step towards a "nerve theorem" for graphs. Let $G$ be a simple graph and let $\mathcal{F}$ be a family of induced subgraphs of $G$ such that the intersection of any members of $\mathcal{F}$ is either empty or connected. We show that if the nerve complex of $\mathcal{F}$ has non-vanishing homology in dimension three, then $G$ contains the complete graph on five vertices as a minor. As a consequence we confirm a conjecture of Goaoc concerning an extension of the planar $(p,q)$ theorem due to Alon and Kleitman: Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a finite family of open connected sets in the plane such that the intersection of any members of $\mathcal{F}$ is either empty or connected. If among any $p \geq 3$ members of $\mathcal{F}$ there are some three that intersect, then there is a set of $C$ points which intersects every member of $\mathcal{F}$, where $C$ is a constant depending only on $p$.

Near equipartitions of colored point sets
Published in Computational Geometry: Theory and Applications 65 (2017), 35-42 • View PublicationBIB
Suppose that $nk$ points in general position in the plane are colored red and blue, with at least $n$ points of each color. We show that then there exist $n$ pairwise disjoint convex sets, each of them containing $k$ of the points, and each of them containing points of both colors. We also show that if $P$ is a set of $n(d+1)$ points in general position in $\mathbb{R}^d$ colored by $d$ colors with at least $n$ points of each color, then there exist $n$ pairwise disjoint $d$-dimensional simplices with vertices in $P$, each of them containing a point of every color. These results can be viewed as a step towards a common generalization of several previously known geometric partitioning results regarding colored point sets.

Colorful theorems for strong convexity

We prove two colorful Carathéodory theorems for strongly convex hulls, generalizing the colorful Caratéodory theorem for ordinary convexity by Imre Bárány, the non-colorful Carathéodory theorem for strongly convex hulls by the second author, and the "very colorful theorems" by the first author and others. We also investigate if the assumption of a "generating convex set" is really needed in such results and try to give a topological criterion for one convex body to be a Minkowski summand of another.

Orthogonal colorings of the sphere
Published in Mathematika 62 (2016) 492-501 • View PublicationBIB
An orthogonal coloring of the two-dimensional unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$, is a partition of $\mathbb{S}^2$ into parts such that no part contains a pair of orthogonal points, that is, a pair of points at spherical distance $π/2$ apart. It is a well-known result that an orthogonal coloring of $\mathbb{S}^2$ requires at least four parts, and orthogonal colorings with exactly four parts can easily be constructed from a regular octahedron centered at the origin. An intriguing question is whether or not every orthogonal 4-coloring of $\mathbb{S}^2$ is such an octahedral coloring. In this paper we address this question and show that if every color class has a non-empty interior, then the coloring is octahedral. Some related results are also given.
