Given a homogeneous ideal $I$ in a polynomial ring over a field, one may record, for each degree $d$ and for each polynomial $f\in I_d$, the set of monomials in $f$ with nonzero coefficients. These data collectively form the tropicalization of $I$. Tropicalizing ideals induces a "matroid stratification" on any (multigraded) Hilbert scheme. Very little is known about the structure of these stratifications.
In this paper, we explore many examples of matroid strata, including some with interesting combinatorial structure, and give a convenient way of visualizing them. We show that the matroid stratification in the Hilbert scheme of points $(\mathbb{P}^1)^{[k]}$ is generated by all Schur polynomials in $k$ variables. We end with an application to the $T$-graph problem of $(\mathbb{A}^2)^{[n]}$; classifying this graph is a longstanding open problem, and we establish the existence of an infinite class of edges.

We prove upper bounds for the graded Betti numbers of Stanley-Reisner rings of balanced simplicial complexes. Along the way we show bounds for Cohen-Macaulay graded rings $S/I$, where $S$ is a polynomial ring and $I\subseteq S$ is an homogeneous ideal containing a certain number of generators in degree 2, including the squares of the variables. Using similar techniques we provide upper bounds for the number of linear syzygies for Stanley-Reisner of balanced normal pseudomanifolds. Moreover, we compute explicitly the graded Betti numbers of cross-polytopal stacked spheres, and show that they only depend on the dimension and the number of vertices, rather than also the combinatorial type.

Let I be a homogeneous ideal of a polynomial ring S. We prove that if the initial ideal J of I, w.r.t. a term order on S, is square-free, then the extremal Betti numbers of S/I and of S/J coincide. In particular, depth(S/I)=depth(S/J) and reg(S/I)=reg(S/J).
On f- and h- vectors of relative simplicial complexes

A relative simplicial complex is a collection of sets of the form $Δ\setminus Γ$, where $Γ\subset Δ$ are simplicial complexes. Relative complexes played key roles in recent advances in algebraic, geometric, and topological combinatorics but, in contrast to simplicial complexes, little is known about their general combinatorial structure. In this paper, we address a basic question in this direction and give a characterization of $f$-vectors of relative (multi)complexes on a ground set of fixed size. On the algebraic side, this yields a characterization of Hilbert functions of quotients of homogeneous ideals over polynomial rings with a fixed number of indeterminates.
Moreover, we characterize $h$-vectors of fully Cohen--Macaulay relative complexes as well as $h$-vectors of Cohen--Macaulay relative complexes with minimal faces of given dimensions. The latter resolves a question of Björner.
Comparing Powers of Edge Ideals

Given a nontrivial homogeneous ideal $I\subseteq k[x_1,x_2,\ldots,x_d]$, a problem of great recent interest has been the comparison of the $r$th ordinary power of $I$ and the $m$th symbolic power $I^{(m)}$.
This comparison has been undertaken directly via an exploration of which exponents $m$ and $r$ guarantee the subset containment $I^{(m)}\subseteq I^r$ and asymptotically via a computation of the resurgence $ρ(I)$, a number for which any $m/r > ρ(I)$ guarantees $I^{(m)}\subseteq I^r$.
Recently, a third quantity, the symbolic defect, was introduced; as $I^t\subseteq I^{(t)}$, the symbolic defect is the minimal number of generators required to add to $I^t$ in order to get $I^{(t)}$.
We consider these various means of comparison when $I$ is the edge ideal of certain graphs by describing an ideal $J$ for which $I^{(t)} = I^t + J$.
When $I$ is the edge ideal of an odd cycle, our description of the structure of $I^{(t)}$ yields solutions to both the direct and asymptotic containment questions, as well as a partial computation of the sequence of symbolic defects.

We study the relationship between depth and regularity of a homogeneous ideal I and those of (I,f) and I:f, where f is a linear form or a monomial. Our results has several interesting consequences on depth and regularity of edge ideals of hypegraphs and of powers of ideals.

For zero-dimensional complete intersections with homogeneous ideal generators of equal degrees over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, we give a combinatorial proof of the smoothness of the corresponding catalecticant schemes along an open subset of a particular irreducible component.

In the present note we study certain arrangements of codimension $2$ flats in projective spaces, we call them "Fermat arrangements". We describe algebraic properties of their defining ideals. In particular, we show that they provide counterexamples to an expected containment relation between ordinary and symbolic powers of homogeneous ideals.

Let $R:= K[x_1,\ldots,x_{n}]$ be a polynomial ring over an infinite field $K$, and let $I \subset R$ be a homogeneous ideal with respect to a weight vector $ω= (ω_1,\ldots,ω_n) \in (\mathbb{Z}^+)^n$ such that $\dim(R/I) = d$. In this paper we study the minimal graded free resolution of $R/I$ as $A$-module, that we call the Noether resolution of $R/I$, whenever $A :=K[x_{n-d+1},\ldots,x_n]$ is a Noether normalization of $R/I$. When $d=2$ and $I$ is saturated, we give an algorithm for obtaining this resolution that involves the computation of a minimal Gröbner basis of $I$ with respect to the weighted degree reverse lexicographic order. In the particular case when $R/I$ is a $2$-dimensional semigroup ring, we also describe the multigraded version of this resolution in terms of the underlying semigroup. Whenever we have the Noether resolution of $R/I$ or its multigraded version, we obtain formulas for the corresponding Hilbert series of $R/I$, and when $I$ is homogeneous, we obtain a formula for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of $R/I$. Moreover, in the more general setting that $R/I$ is a simplicial semigroup ring of any dimension, we provide its Macaulayfication.
As an application of the results for $2$-dimensional semigroup rings, we provide a new upper bound for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the coordinate ring of a projective monomial curve. Finally, we describe the multigraded Noether resolution and the Macaulayfication of either the coordinate ring of a projective monomial curve $\mathcal{C} \subseteq \mathbb{P}_K^{n}$ associated to an arithmetic sequence or the coordinate ring of any canonical projection $π_{r}(\mathcal{C})$ of $\mathcal{C}$ to $\mathbb{P}_K^{n-1}$.

The purpose of this note is to show a new series of examples of homogeneous ideals $I$ in ${\mathbb K}[x,y,z,w]$ for which the containment $I^{(3)}\subset I^2$ fails. These ideals are supported on certain arrangements of lines in ${\mathbb P}^3$, which resemble Fermat configurations of points in ${\mathbb P}^2$, see \cite{NagSec16}. All examples exhibiting the failure of the containment $I^{(3)}\subseteq I^2$ constructed so far have been supported on points or cones over configurations of points. Apart of providing new counterexamples, these ideals seem quite interesting on their own.
Strongly robust toric ideals in codimension 2

A homogeneous ideal is robust if its universal Gröbner basis is also a minimal generating set. For toric ideals, one has the stronger definition: A toric ideal is strongly robust if its Graver basis equals the set of indispensable binomials. We characterize the codimension 2 strongly robust toric ideals by their Gale diagrams. This gives a positive answer to a question of Petrovic, Thoma, and Vladoiu in the case of codimension 2 toric ideals.

In the present work we study parameter spaces of two line point configurations introduced by Böröczky. These configurations are extremal from the point of view of Dirac-Motzkin Conjecture settled recently by Green and Tao. They have appeared also recently in commutative algebra in connection with the containment problem for symbolic and ordinary powers of homogeneous ideals and in algebraic geometry in considerations revolving around the Bounded Negativity Conjecture. Our main results are Theorem A and Theorem B. We show that the parameter space of what we call $B12$ configurations is a three dimensional rational variety. As a consequence we derive the existence of a three dimensional family of rational $B12$ configurations. On the other hand the moduli space of $B15$ configurations is shown to be an elliptic curve with only finitely many rational points, all corresponding to degenerate configurations. Thus, somewhat surprisingly, we conclude that there are no rational $B15$ configurations.

Let $R= S/I$ where $S=k[T_1, \ldots, T_n]$ and $I$ is a homogeneous ideal in $S$. The acyclic closure $R \langle Y \rangle $ of $k$ over $R$ is a DG algebra resolution obtained by means of Tate's process of adjoining variables to kill cycles. In a similar way one can obtain the minimal model $S[X]$, a DG algebra resolution of $R$ over $S$. By a theorem of Avramov there is a tight connection between these two resolutions. In this paper we study these two resolutions when $I$ is the edge ideal of a path or a cycle. We determine the behavior of the deviations $\varepsilon_i(R)$, which are the number of variables in $R\langle Y \rangle$ in homological degree $i$. We apply our results to the study of the $k$-algebra structure of the Koszul homology of $R$.
Detecting Binomiality

Binomial ideals are special polynomial ideals with many algorithmically and theoretically nice properties. We discuss the problem of deciding if a given polynomial ideal is binomial. While the methods are general, our main motivation and source of examples is the simplification of steady state equations of chemical reaction networks. For homogeneous ideals we give an efficient, Gröbner-free algorithm for binomiality detection, based on linear algebra only. On inhomogeneous input the algorithm can only give a sufficient condition for binomiality. As a remedy we construct a heuristic toolbox that can lead to simplifications even if the given ideal is not binomial.

New graded modules for the current algebra of $\mathfrak{sl}_n$ are introduced. Relating these modules to the fusion product of simple $\mathfrak{sl}_n$-modules and local Weyl modules of truncated current algebras shows their expected impact on several outstanding conjectures. We further generalize results on PBW filtrations of simple $\mathfrak{sl}_n$-modules and use them to provide decomposition formulas for these new modules in important cases.

We show that the weights on a tropical variety can be recovered from the tropical scheme structure proposed by the Giansiracusas in arXiv:1308.0042, so there is a well-defined Hilbert-Chow morphism from a tropical scheme to the underlying tropical cycle. For a subscheme of projective space given by a homogeneous ideal I we show that this tropical scheme structure contains the same information as the set of valuated matroids of the vector spaces I_d for d \geq 0. We also give a combinatorial criterion to determine whether a given relation is in the congruence defining the tropical scheme structure.

Let P = k[x_1, ..., x_n] be the polynomial ring in n variables. A homogeneous ideal I of P generated in degree d is called Gotzmann if it has the smallest possible Hilbert function out of all homogeneous ideals with the same dimension in degree d. The edge ideal of a simple graph G on vertices x_1, ..., x_n is the quadratic square-free monomial ideal generated by all x_i x_j where {x_i,x_j} is an edge of G. The only edge ideals that are Gotzmann are those edge ideals corresponding to star graphs.
Contracted ideals and the Groebner fan of the rational normal curve

The paper has two goals: the study the associated graded ring of contracted homogeneous ideals in $K[x,y]$ and the study of the Groebner fan of the ideal $P$ of the rational normal curve in ${\bf P}^d$. These two problems are, quite surprisingly, very tightly related. We completely classify the contracted ideals with a Cohen-Macaulay associated graded rings in terms of the numerical invariants arising from Zariski's factorization. We determine explicitly all the initial ideals (monomial or not) of $P$ that are Cohen-Macaulay.
Truncated Groebner fans and lattice ideals
We outline a generalization of the Groebner fan of a homogeneous ideal with maximal cells parametrizing truncated Groebner bases. This "truncated" Groebner fan is usually much smaller than the full Groebner fan and offers the natural framework for conversion between truncated Groebner bases. The generic Groebner walk generalizes naturally to this setting by using the Buchberger algorithm with truncation on facets. We specialize to the setting of lattice ideals. Here facets along the generic walk are given by unique (facet) binomials. This along with the representation of binomials as integer vectors give an especially simple version of the generic Groebner walk. Computational experience with the special Aardal-Lenstra integer programming knapsack problems is reported.

In this paper we derive geometric consequences from the presence of a long strand of linear syzygies in the minimal free resolution of a closed scheme in projective space whose homogeneous ideal is generated by quadrics. These consequences are given in terms of intersections with arbitrary linear subspaces. We use our results to bound homological invariants of some well-known projective varieties, to give a combinatorial characterization of quadratic monomial ideals with a long strand of linear syzygies, etc
