Tropical Vector Bundles
The goal of this paper is to introduce a construction of a vector bundle on a tropical variety. When the base is a tropical toric variety these tropicalize toric vector bundles, and are described by the data of a valuated matroid and some flats in the lattice of flats of the underlying matroid. The fibers are tropical linear spaces. We define global sections for tropical toric vector bundles, stability, and Jordan-Hölder and Harder-Narasimhan filtrations. Many of these require additional modularity assumptions on the defining matroid.

Varieties of Tropical Ideals are Balanced
Published • View PublicationBIB
Tropical ideals, introduced in arXiv:1609.03838, define subschemes of tropical toric varieties. We prove that the top-dimensional parts of their varieties are balanced polyhedral complexes of the same dimension as the ideal. This means that every subscheme of a tropical toric variety defined by a tropical ideal has an associated class in the Chow ring of the toric variety. A key tool in the proof is that specialization of variables in a tropical ideal yields another tropical ideal; this plays the role of hyperplane sections in the theory. We also show that elimination theory (projection of varieties) works for tropical ideals as in the classical case. The matroid condition that defines tropical ideals is crucial for these results.

Higher Connectivity of Tropicalizations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that the tropicalization of an irreducible d-dimensional variety over a field of characteristic 0 is (d-l)-connected through codimension one, where l is the dimension of the lineality space of the tropicalization. From this we obtain a higher connectivity result for skeleta of rational polytopes. We also prove a tropical analogue of the Bertini Theorem: the intersection of the tropicalization of an irreducible variety with a generic hyperplane is again the tropicalization of an irreducible variety.

Tropical Ideals
Published in Compositio Math. 154 (2018) 640-670 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce and study a special class of ideals, called tropical ideals, in the semiring of tropical polynomials, with the goal of developing a useful and solid algebraic foundation for tropical geometry. The class of tropical ideals strictly includes the tropicalizations of classical ideals, and allows us to define subschemes of tropical toric varieties, generalizing [Giansiracusa-Giansiracusa]. We investigate some of the basic structure of tropical ideals, and show that they satisfy many desirable properties that mimic the classical setup. In particular, every tropical ideal has an associated variety, which we prove is always a finite polyhedral complex. In addition we show that tropical ideals satisfy the ascending chain condition, even though they are typically not finitely generated, and also the weak Nullstellensatz.

Tropical schemes, tropical cycles, and valuated matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that the weights on a tropical variety can be recovered from the tropical scheme structure proposed by the Giansiracusas in arXiv:1308.0042, so there is a well-defined Hilbert-Chow morphism from a tropical scheme to the underlying tropical cycle. For a subscheme of projective space given by a homogeneous ideal I we show that this tropical scheme structure contains the same information as the set of valuated matroids of the vector spaces I_d for d \geq 0. We also give a combinatorial criterion to determine whether a given relation is in the congruence defining the tropical scheme structure.

Fiber fans and toric quotients

The GIT chamber decomposition arising from a subtorus action on a quasiprojective toric variety is a polyhedral complex. Denote by Sigma the fan that is the cone over the polyhedral complex. In this paper we show that the toric variety defined by the fan Sigma is the normalization of the toric Chow quotient of a closely related affine toric variety by a complementary torus.

Uniform bounds on multigraded regularity
Published in Journal of Algebraic Geometry, 14 (2005) 137-164. • View PublicationBIB
We give an effective uniform bound on the multigraded regularity of a subscheme of a smooth projective toric variety X with a given multigraded Hilbert polynomial. To establish this bound, we introduce a new combinatorial tool, called a Stanley filtration, for studying monomial ideals in the homogeneous coordinate ring of X. As a special case, we obtain a new proof of Gotzmann's regularity theorem. We also discuss applications of this bound to the construction of multigraded Hilbert schemes.

The toric Hilbert scheme of a rank two lattice is smooth and irreducible
Published • View PublicationBIB
The toric Hilbert scheme of a lattice L in Z^n is the multigraded Hilbert scheme parameterizing all ideals in k[x_1,...,x_n] with Hilbert function value one for every degree in the grading monoid N^n/L. In this paper we show that if L is two-dimensional, then the toric Hilbert scheme of L is smooth and irreducible. This result is false for lattices of dimension three and higher as the toric Hilbert scheme of a rank three lattice can be reducible.

Supernormal Vector Configurations
A configuration of lattice vectors is supernormal if it contains a Hilbert basis for every cone spanned by a subset. We study such configurations from various perspectives, including triangulations, integer programming and Groebner bases. Our main result is a bijection between virtual chambers of the configuration and virtual initial ideals of the associated binomial ideal.

The vertex ideal of a lattice
We introduce a monomial ideal whose standard monomials encode the vertices of all fibers of a lattice. We study the minimal generators, the radical, the associated primes and the primary decomposition of this ideal, as well as its relation to initial ideals of lattice ideals.

Combinatorics of the toric Hilbert scheme
Published • View PublicationBIB
The toric Hilbert scheme is a parameter space for all ideals with the same multi-graded Hilbert function as a given toric ideal. Unlike the classical Hilbert scheme, it is unknown whether toric Hilbert schemes are connected. We construct a graph on all the monomial ideals on the scheme, called the flip graph, and prove that the toric Hilbert scheme is connected if and only if the flip graph is connected. These graphs are used to exhibit curves in P^4 whose associated toric Hilbert schemes have arbitrary dimension. We show that the flip graph maps into the Baues graph of all triangulations of the point configuration defining the toric ideal. Inspired by the recent discovery of a disconnected Baues graph, we close with results that suggest the existence of a disconnected flip graph and hence a disconnected toric Hilbert scheme.

Antichains of Monomial Ideals are Finite
Published • View PublicationBIB
The main result of this paper is that all antichains are finite in the poset of monomial ideals in a polynomial ring, ordered by inclusion. We present several corollaries of this result, both simpler proofs of results already in the literature and new results. One natural generalization to more abstract posets is shown to be false.

Boolean Term Orders and the Root System B_n
Published • View PublicationBIB
A boolean term order is a total order on subsets of [n]={1,...,n} such that \emptyset < alpha for all nonempty alpha contained in [n], and alpha < beta implies alpha \cup gamma < beta \cup gamma for all gamma which do not intersect alpha or beta. Boolean term orders arise in several different areas of mathematics, including Gröbner basis theory for the exterior algebra, and comparative probability. The main result of this paper is that boolean term orders correspond to one element extensions of the oriented matroid M(B_n), where B_n is the root system {e_i:1 \leq i \leq n \} \cup {e_i \pm e_j :1 \leq i < j \leq n}. This establishes boolean term orders in the frame work of the Baues problem. We also define a notion of coherence for a boolean term order, and a flip relation between different term orders. Other results include examples of noncoherent term orders, including an example exhibiting flip deficiency, and enumeration of boolean term orders for small values of n.
