A Riemann-Roch theorem for Frobenius quotients
We construct two families of commutative Frobenius rings: discrete and continuous Frobenius quotients $K_f$, resp. $A_g$, which are defined as the quotients of shift, resp. differential operator algebras by the annihilator of a polynomial. These constructions model the numerical $K$-rings and Chow rings of smooth complete varieties. We show that there is a naturally defined isomorphism $\mathbb{Q} K_f \cong \mathbb{Q} A_g$ playing the role of the Chern character, precisely when the polynomials satisfy a combinatorial analogue of the Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch theorem, which states that there exists an invertible element $\mathrm{td} \in \mathbb{Q} A_g^\times$, called the Todd class, such that $f = \mathrm{td} \cdot g$. In this case we show that $K_f$ carries all the structure needed to make it a suitable model for $K$-rings of complete smooth varieties: $K_f$ is a $λ$-ring, has well-defined Chern classes, determinants, and satisfies a combinatorial analogue of Serre duality. We further show that the construction is functorial and obtain a combinatorial analogue of the Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem. Lastly, we investigate the existence of larger families of isomorphisms between Frobenius quotients defined by the action of a power series on a generating set, such as the truncated Chern character which yields an integral isomorphism $K_f \cong A_g$.
We provide numerous examples and applications: we give a new formula for computing Snapper polynomials of matroids, show that the dualizing class of $K_f$ coincides with dualizing classes of matroids and linear families of polytopes, realize $K$-rings of toric variety bundles as Frobenius quotients, and study $K$-rings of Ehrhart fans as well as exceptional isomorphisms in this setting.
Lower bounds on the strength of the determinant
We establish new lower bounds for the strength and partition rank of the determinant. For every prime $p$, we prove the exact identity \[ \operatorname{str}(\mathrm{det}_p)=p. \] A weak monotonicity argument, combined with a bound for gaps between consecutive primes, then gives $\operatorname{str}(\mathrm{det}_n)\ge (1-o(1))n^{0.475}$ for sufficiently large $n$. Since the Birch rank of $\mathrm{det}_n$ is always $4$, this gives the first explicit family showing that the dependence on the degree in bounds for strength in terms of Birch rank is unavoidable. Viewing $\mathrm{det}_n$ as an $n$-linear form in its columns, we also prove that its partition rank is at least the largest prime not exceeding $n$. Consequently, \[ n-n^{0.525}\le \operatorname{prk}(\mathrm{det}_n)\le n \] for all sufficiently large $n$, and hence the partition rank of the determinant is $n-o(n)$. The proof introduces an intersection-theoretic method for lower-bounding strength: a short strength decomposition produces a nowhere-vanishing section of a split vector bundle on the complement of the determinantal hypersurface, while a nonzero top Chern class in the Chow ring of $\mathrm{PGL}_n$ obstructs such a section.
Tangent classes of matroids and wonderful compactifications
For every loopless matroid $M$ and every Feichtner--Yuzvinsky building set $\mathcal{G}$ containing the top flat, we construct an integral tangent class $T_{M,\mathcal{G}}^{\mathbb{Z}}\in K_{\mathbb{Z}}(M,\mathcal{G})$; in the realizable case it specializes to the class of the tangent bundle of the corresponding wonderful compactification, it recovers the Hilbert series of the Chow ring through Hirzebruch--Riemann--Roch, and it satisfies the expected Chern-alpha lower bounds. This reproduces the tangent class and its key properties studied by the first author in arXiv:2606.22650. The main body of this paper was produced autonomously, without human mathematical guidance, by Danus, an AI mathematical reasoning agent. Danus solved the problem before arXiv:2606.22650 was publicly available, demonstrating the potential of AI agents in mathematical research. We reproduce its output faithfully, adding only editorial comments; the experiment is documented in Appendix B.
Algebraic cobordism rings of wonderful varieties and matroids
We give two combinatorial presentations for the algebraic cobordism ring $Ω^*(M)$ of the toric variety of the Bergman fan of any loopless matroid $M$. As a consequence of our presentations, we obtain an $Ω^*(\mathrm{pt})$-algebra isomorphism $Ω^*(M) \simeq CH^*(M) \otimes_{\mathbb{Z}} Ω^*(\mathrm{pt})$, where $CH^*(M)$ is the Chow ring of $M$ and $Ω^*(\mathrm{pt})$ is the algebraic cobordism ring of the point. This isomorphism generalizes, in part, the exceptional integral isomorphism between the Chow ring and $K$-ring of a matroid, studied in the recent works of Berget--Eur--Spink--Tseng and Larson--Li--Payne--Proudfoot. For a complex hyperplane arrangement $\mathcal{H}$, we prove that the algebraic cobordism ring of the wonderful variety $W_\mathcal{H}$ of $\mathcal{H}$ and the algebraic cobordism ring of the toric variety of the matroid underlying $\mathcal{H}$ are isomorphic, and that both rings coincide with the complex cobordism ring of $W_\mathcal{H}$.
The singular cohomology ring of a uniform matroid: combinatorics and Lefschetz properties
The singular cohomology ring of a matroid is an algebraic invariant which generalizes the Chow ring of a matroid. We study combinatorial and Lefschetz properties of the singular cohomology ring of a uniform matroid. Combinatorially, we construct an explicit basis for the singular cohomology ring in terms of Koszul homology. From this basis we derive multiple formulas for the Hodge numbers of the cohomology ring that recover and extend known formulas for the Chow polynomial of a uniform matroid. We also use this basis to show that the singular cohomology ring of a uniform matroid satisfies the "quasi-projective strong Lefschetz property" -- a slight weakening of the Hard Lefschetz property found in the Chow ring of a matroid.
Matroid analogues of Gal's conjecture
Well-known conjectures of Charney--Davis, Gal, and Nevo--Petersen predict increasingly strong positivity phenomena for the h-vectors of flag simplicial spheres. In this paper, we formulate and prove matroid analogues of these conjectures in the setting of Chow polynomials of matroids with building sets. Our proofs rely on toric geometry and make crucial use of tropical intersection theory.
We begin by introducing complete building sets, a class encompassing all maximal building sets and other important families such as minimal building sets of braid matroids. For matroids with complete building sets, we analyze the Chow rings of the associated toric varieties, and prove that their Hilbert--Poincaré polynomials are gamma-positive. From this analysis, we derive a combinatorial formula for the coefficients of the gamma-expansion, and use it to explicitly construct a simplicial complex $Γ$, whose f-vector coincides with the gamma-vector. This establishes a matroid analogue of the Nevo--Petersen conjecture. When the building set is maximal, we further prove that $Γ$ is balanced, confirming the strongest such analogue in this case. As an application, we obtain a new combinatorial formula for the gamma-expansion of the Poincaré polynomial of the Deligne--Mumford--Knudsen compactification $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$, and derive several novel numerical inequalities for its coefficients.
We also study the toric varieties of matroids with flag building sets, another class containing maximal building sets as well as several other prominent families. We prove that the Hilbert--Poincaré polynomials of these toric varieties are gamma-positive. This result establishes matroid analogues of the Charney--Davis and Gal conjectures, and simultaneously extends several recent gamma-positivity results for Chow polynomials.
Deligne--Lusztig varieties, toric orbifolds, and the $q$-Klyachko algebra
We investigate the geometry behind the $q$-Klyachko algebra, introduced by Nadeau--Tewari. When $q$ is a prime power, we show that the $q$-Klyachko algebra is the image of the pullback map on Chow rings $\mathrm{CH}(\mathrm{Fl}_{n+1})\to\mathrm{CH}(\mathrm{DL}_n)$, where $\mathrm{DL}_n\subseteq \mathrm{Fl}_n$ is a compactified Deligne--Lusztig variety inside the complete flag variety $\mathrm{Fl}_{n+1}$. When $q$ is a positive rational number, we establish a Kähler package for the $q$-Klyachko algebra through inputs from toric geometry.
Chow rings of moduli spaces of genus 0 curves with collisions
Introduced in [BB], simplicially stable spaces are alternative compactifications of $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$ generalizing Hassett's moduli spaces of weighted stable curves. We give presentations of the Chow rings of these spaces in genus $0$ using techniques developed by the author in [New25]. When considering the special case of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$, this gives a new proof of Keel's presentation of $\operatorname{CH}(\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n})$.
The rank-nullity ring of a matroid
We introduce the rank-nullity ring of a matroid $M$, which is a subring of the Chow ring of the permutahedral toric variety. This subring contains the tautological Chern classes of $M$, a fact we deduce from a highly symmetric formula for these classes. When the matroid $M$ is a uniform matroid, the rank-nullity ring coincides with the subring of $S_n$-invariants of the Chow ring of the permutahedral toric variety. In this case, we compute its Hilbert function explicitly and provide a Gröbner basis for the ideal of relations among its generators.
Existence of Kähler algebras with Chow polynomials as Hilbert series
In this article, we study Chow polynomials of weakly ranked posets and prove the existence of Gorenstein algebras with the Kähler package such that their Hilbert--Poincaré series agrees with the Chow polynomial. Our statement provides evidence in support of a conjecture by Ferroni, Matherne and the second author about the existence of an algebra for every weakly ranked poset that generalizes the Feichtner--Yuzvinsky Chow ring for matroids. This allows us to prove strong inequalities for the coefficients of Chow polynomials; we prove log-concavity for all posets of weak rank at most six and provide counterexamples to log-concavity for any higher rank. For ranked posets we recover an even stronger condition, showing that the differences between consecutive coefficients constitute a pure O-sequence.
Chow polynomials of rank-uniform labeled posets
We introduce and develop the theory of UMEL-shellable posets. These are posets equipped with an edge-lexicographical labeling satisfying certain uniformity and monotonicity properties. This framework encompasses classical families of combinatorial geometries, including uniform matroids, projective and affine geometries, braid matroids of type A and B, and all Dowling geometries. It also comprises all rank-uniform supersolvable lattices, and therefore also all rank-uniform distributive lattices. Our main result establishes real-rootedness phenomena for the Chow polynomials, the augmented Chow polynomials, and the chain polynomials associated with those posets, thus making simultaneous progress towards conjectures by Ferroni--Schröter, Huh--Stevens, and Athanasiadis--Kalampogia-Evangelinou. In the special case of lattices of flats of matroids, the (augmented) Chow polynomials coincide with the Hilbert--Poincaré series of the Chow ring associated to the smooth and generally noncompact toric varieties of the (augmented) Bergman fan of the matroid, whereas the chain polynomial encodes the Hilbert--Poincaré series of the Stanley--Reisner ring of the Bergman complex of the matroid. Therefore, these real-rootedness results are tightly linked to the study of these algebro-geometric structures in matroid theory.
Decompositions of Chow rings of direct sums of matroids
We prove two dual recursive decompositions as a graded $\underline{\mathrm{CH}}(M)\otimes \underline{\mathrm{CH}}(N)$-module of the Chow ring $\underline{\mathrm{CH}}(M\oplus N)$ of the direct sum of matroids. We use this to obtain a decomposition of $\underline{\mathrm{CH}}(M\oplus N)$ into irreducible $\underline{\mathrm{CH}}(M) \otimes \underline{\mathrm{CH}}(N)$-modules. The result implies a new recursive formula for the Eulerian numbers. Similarly, we find a recursive decomposition of the augmented Chow ring $\mathrm{CH}(M \oplus N)$ into $\mathrm{CH}(M)\otimes \mathrm{CH}(N)$-modules, generalizing some of the results of arXiv:2002.03341. We prove analogous decompositions of (augmented) Chow polynomials of weakly ranked posets in the sense of arXiv:2411.04070.
Chow polynomials of totally nonnegative matrices and posets
Huh-Stevens and Ferroni-Schröter independently conjectured that Hilbert-Poincaré series of Chow rings of geometric lattices have only real zeros. Ferroni, Matherne and the second author extended this conjecture to Chow polynomials of Cohen-Macaulay poset. In this paper we address the above conjectures by providing new defining relations and properties of Chow functions of posets and matrices. These are used, in conjunction with new techniques on interlacing sequences of polynomials, to prove that Chow polynomials of totally nonnegative matrices have only real zeros, which, in turn, proves the above conjectures for a class of posets that contains projective and affine geometries, face lattices of cubical polytopes, partition lattices and Dowling lattices, perfect matroid designs, and lattices of flats of paving matroids. We also study Chow polynomials of Toeplitz matrices in greater detail, and show how these are related the combinatorics of binomial and Sheffer posets, as well as to a family of generalized Eulerian polynomials with coefficients in the ring of symmetric polynomials that have been studied by e.g. Stanley, Brenti, Stembridge and Shareshian-Wachs.
Hodge theory of matroids by star subdivisions
It is known that the Chow ring of a matroid satisfies the Hard Lefschetz property and Hodge Riemann relations. We provide a proof of this theorem by decomposition of the deletion operation into star subdivisions at two dimensional cones. This gives a simple combinatorial proof which avoids intersection cohomology or algebraic geometry.
Building sets, Chow rings, and their Hilbert series
We establish formulas for the Hilbert series of the Feichtner--Yuzvinsky Chow ring of a polymatroid using arbitrary building sets. For braid matroids and minimal building sets, our results produce new formulas for the Poincaré polynomial of the moduli space $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n+1}$ of pointed stable rational curves, and recover several previous results by Keel, Getzler, Manin, and Aluffi--Marcolli--Nascimento. We also use our methods to produce examples of matroids and building sets for which the corresponding Chow ring has Hilbert series with non-log-concave coefficients. This contrasts with the real-rootedness and log-concavity conjectures of Ferroni--Schröter for matroids with maximal building sets, and of Aluffi--Chen--Marcolli for braid matroids with minimal building sets.
Chow polynomials of uniform matroids are real-rooted
June Huh and Matthew Stevens conjectured that the Hilbert-Poincaré series of the Chow ring of any matroid is a polynomial with only real zeros. We prove this conjecture for the class of uniform matroids. We also prove that the Chow polynomial and the augmented Chow polynomial of any maximally ranked poset has only real zeros.
Koszul Graded Möbius Algebras and Strongly Chordal Graphs
The graded Möbius algebra of a matroid is a commutative graded algebra which encodes the combinatorics of the lattice of flats of the matroid. As a special subalgebra of the augmented Chow ring of the matroid, it plays an important role in the recent proof of the Dowling-Wilson Top Heavy Conjecture. Recently, Mastroeni and McCullough proved that the Chow ring and the augmented Chow ring of a matroid are Koszul. We study when graded Möbius algebras are Koszul. We characterize the Koszul graded Möbius algebras of cycle matroids of graphs in terms of properties of the graphs. Our results yield a new characterization of strongly chordal graphs via edge orderings.
Tor Groups of the Stanley-Reisner Ring of a Matroid
We introduce the Tor groups $ \mathop{Tor}_{\bullet}^{S_{\mathrm{M}}^{\circ}} \left( \mathbb{C}[Σ_{\mathrm{M}}], \mathbb{C} \right)_{\bullet} $ for a loopless matroid $\mathrm{M}$ as a way to study the extra relations occurring in the linear ideal of the Feichtner-Yuzvinsky presentation of the Chow ring $ A^{\bullet}(\mathrm{M}) $. This extends the definition of the Chow ring of a matroid since $ \mathop{Tor}_{0}^{S_{\mathrm{M}}^{\circ}} \left( \mathbb{C}[Σ_{\mathrm{M}}], \mathbb{C} \right)_{\bullet} \cong A^{\bullet}(\mathrm{M}) $. Our main tool in studying these groups is to recognize them as cohomology of the toric variety associated to the Bergman fan of the matroid. With this geometric approach, we show that these Tor groups fit into a long exact sequence arising from the matroidal flips of Adiprasito, Huh, and Katz, extending the short exact sequence in the case of Chow rings. Using this long exact sequence we give a recursive formula for the Hilbert series of the Tor algebra of a uniform matroid.
Chow functions for partially ordered sets
Three decades ago, Stanley and Brenti initiated the study of the Kazhdan--Lusztig--Stanley (KLS) functions, putting on common ground several polynomials appearing in algebraic combinatorics, discrete geometry, and representation theory. In the present paper we develop a theory that parallels the KLS theory. To each kernel in a given poset, we associate a polynomial function that we call the \emph{Chow function}. The Chow function often exhibits remarkable properties, and sometimes encodes the graded dimensions of a cohomology or Chow ring. The framework of Chow functions provides natural polynomial analogs of graded module decompositions that appear in algebraic geometry, but that work for arbitrary posets, even when no graded module decomposition is known to exist. In this general framework, we prove a number of unimodality and positivity results without relying on versions of the Hard Lefschetz theorem. Our framework shows that there is an unexpected relation between positivity and real-rootedness conjectures about chains on face lattices of polytopes by Brenti and Welker, Hilbert--Poincaré series of matroid Chow rings by Ferroni and Schröter, and flag enumerations on Bruhat intervals of Coxeter groups by Billera and Brenti.
An algebraic interpretation of Eulerian polynomials, derangement polynomials, and beyond, via Gröbner methods
Motivated by the question of whether Chow polynomials of matroids have only real roots, this article revisits the known relationship between Eulerian polynomials and the Hilbert series of Chow rings of permutohedral varieties. This is done using a quadratic Gröbner basis associated to a new presentation of those rings, which is obtained by iterating the semi-small decomposition of Chow rings of matroids. This Gröbner basis can also be applied to compute certain principal ideals in these rings, and ultimately reestablish the known connection between derangement polynomials and the Hilbert series of Chow rings for corank 1 uniform matroids. More broadly, this approach enables us to express the Hilbert series of Chow rings for any uniform matroid as polynomials related to the ascent statistics on particular sets of inversion sequences.
