Polynomials from tilings of rectangles
We study tilings of rectangular boards using unit squares together with a single type of big tile shaped as a Ferrers diagram.
We derive generating functions for these tilings, prove real-rootedness and interlacing properties of associated independence polynomials, and establish connections with several sequences in the OEIS. Our results touch on tilings involving L-shaped polyominoes, fault-free tilings, and cylindric variants. We prove that tiling polynomials for two-column Ferrers shapes are real-rooted and form interlacing sequences.
Chow polynomials of totally nonnegative matrices and posets
Huh-Stevens and Ferroni-Schröter independently conjectured that Hilbert-Poincaré series of Chow rings of geometric lattices have only real zeros. Ferroni, Matherne and the second author extended this conjecture to Chow polynomials of Cohen-Macaulay poset. In this paper we address the above conjectures by providing new defining relations and properties of Chow functions of posets and matrices. These are used, in conjunction with new techniques on interlacing sequences of polynomials, to prove that Chow polynomials of totally nonnegative matrices have only real zeros, which, in turn, proves the above conjectures for a class of posets that contains projective and affine geometries, face lattices of cubical polytopes, partition lattices and Dowling lattices, perfect matroid designs, and lattices of flats of paving matroids. We also study Chow polynomials of Toeplitz matrices in greater detail, and show how these are related the combinatorics of binomial and Sheffer posets, as well as to a family of generalized Eulerian polynomials with coefficients in the ring of symmetric polynomials that have been studied by e.g. Stanley, Brenti, Stembridge and Shareshian-Wachs.
Veronese sections and interlacing matrices of polynomials and formal power series
The concept of a fully interlacing matrix of formal power series with real coefficients is introduced. This concept extends and strengthens that of an interlacing sequence of real-rooted polynomials with nonnegative coefficients, in the special case of row and column matrices. The fully interlacing property is shown to be preserved under matrix products, flips across the reverse diagonal and Veronese sections of the power series involved. These results and their corollaries generalize, unify and simplify several results which have previously appeared in the literature. An application to the theory of uniform triangulations of simplicial complexes is included.
Discrete Poisson hardcore 1D model and reinfections

We suggest a new hardcore Poisson-type distribution for Young diagrams with the row lengths from some finite list. A discrete variant of the time-ordered Matérn II process in 1D is employed. This approach is related to that based on the interlacing sequences due to Kerov and others, but we restrict the number of rows. The basic lengths are assumed comparable with the total order of the diagram in the quasi-classical limit, which results in new methods and new formulas. An interesting application is to random walks where the steps are at the points satisfying the classical Poisson distribution or our truncatedone. In the simplest case, one obtains the distribution in terms of Bessel I-functions, which provides some probabilistic interpretation of its many properties. An immediate application of our truncated Poisson distributions is to modeling reinfections in epidemics.
Frustrated Triangles

A triple of vertices in a graph is a \emph{frustrated triangle} if it induces an odd number of edges. We study the set $F_n\subset[0,\binom{n}{3}]$ of possible number of frustrated triangles $f(G)$ in a graph $G$ on $n$ vertices. We prove that about two thirds of the numbers in $[0,n^{3/2}]$ cannot appear in $F_n$, and we characterise the graphs $G$ with $f(G)\in[0,n^{3/2}]$. More precisely, our main result is that, for each $n\geq 3$, $F_n$ contains two interlacing sequences $0=a_0\leq b_0\leq a_1\leq b_1\leq \dots \leq a_m\leq b_m\sim n^{3/2}$ such that $F_n\cap(b_t,a_{t+1})=\emptyset$ for all $t$, where the gaps are $|b_t-a_{t+1}|=(n-2)-t(t+1)$ and $|a_t-b_t|=t(t-1)$. Moreover, $f(G)\in[a_t,b_t]$ if and only if $G$ can be obtained from a complete bipartite graph by flipping exactly $t$ edges/nonedges. On the other hand, we show, for all $n$ sufficiently large, that if $m\in[f(n),\binom{n}{3}-f(n)]$, then $m\in F_n$ where $f(n)$ is asymptotically best possible with $f(n)\sim n^{3/2}$ for $n$ even and $f(n)\sim \sqrt{2}n^{3/2}$ for $n$ odd. Furthermore, we determine the graphs with the minimum number of frustrated triangles amongst those with $n$ vertices and $e\leq n^2/4$ edges.
Mutual Interlacing and Eulerian-like Polynomials for Weyl Groups
We use the method of mutual interlacing to prove two conjectures on the real-rootedness of Eulerian-like polynomials: Brenti's conjecture on $q$-Eulerian polynomials for Weyl groups of type $D$, and Dilks, Petersen, and Stembridge's conjecture on affine Eulerian polynomials for irreducible finite Weyl groups.
For the former, we obtain a refinement of Brenti's $q$-Eulerian polynomials of type $D$, and then show that these refined Eulerian polynomials satisfy certain recurrence relation. By using the Routh--Hurwitz theory and the recurrence relation, we prove that these polynomials form a mutually interlacing sequence for any positive $q$, and hence prove Brenti's conjecture. For $q=1$, our result reduces to the real-rootedness of the Eulerian polynomials of type $D$, which were originally conjectured by Brenti and recently proved by Savage and Visontai.
For the latter, we introduce a family of polynomials based on Savage and Visontai's refinement of Eulerian polynomials of type $D$. We show that these new polynomials satisfy the same recurrence relation as Savage and Visontai's refined Eulerian polynomials. As a result, we get the real-rootedness of the affine Eulerian polynomials of type $D$. Combining the previous results for other types, we completely prove Dilks, Petersen, and Stembridge's conjecture, which states that, for every irreducible finite Weyl group, the affine descent polynomial has only real zeros.
Anisotropic Young diagrams and Jack symmetric functions

We study the Young graph with edge multiplicities arising in a Pieri-type formula for Jack symmetric polynomials $P_μ(x;a)$ with a parameter $a$. Starting with the empty diagram, we define recurrently the `dimensions' $\dim_a$ in the same way as for the Young lattice or Pascal triangle.
New proofs are given for two known results. The first is the $a$-hook formula for $\dim_a$, first found by R.Stanley. Secondly, we prove (for all complex $u$ and $v$) a generalization of the identity $\sumν(c(b)+u)(c(b)+v)\dimν/\dimμ=(n+1)(n+uv)$, where $ν$ runs over immediate successors of a Young diagram $μ$ with $n$ boxes. Here $c(b)$ is the content of a new box $b$. The identity is known to imply the existence of an interesting family of positive definite central functions on the infinite symmetric group.
The approach is based on the interpretation of a Young diagram as a pair of interlacing sequences, so that analytic techniques may be used to solve combinatorial problems. We show that when dealing with Jack polynomials $P_μ(x;a)$, it makes sense to consider `anisotropic' Young diagrams made of rectangular boxes of size $1\times a$.
