Polytopes and posets associated to preorders
Preorder polytopes, defined from preorders on finite sets, are introduced and studied from a lattice point enumeration point of view. They naturally generalize arbor polytopes, recently introduced and studied by the second named author. Preorder polytopes are shown to be lattice polytopes which satisfy a certain duality relating their Ehrhart polynomials with the zeta polynomials of their posets of lattice points. A combinatorial interpretation of the normalized volume of a preorder polytope is proven, together with formulas for the Ehrhart polynomial and the $h^\ast$-polynomial, and a combinatorial interpretation of the latter is conjectured. Several conjectures and results on the lattice point enumeration of arbor polytopes are generalized to preorder polytopes, new conjectures are proposed and new interesting examples of preorder polytopes are studied.

Lattice point enumeration of some arbor polytopes
The $n$-dimensional lattice polytopes $\mathcal{Q}_{n,k}$ obtained by intersecting the $n$th dilate of the standard $n$-dimensional simplex in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with the half-spaces $x_i \le 1$ for $1 \le i \le k$ form an interesting special case of Chapoton's arbor polytopes. They interpolate between the $n$th dilate of the standard $n$-dimensional simplex and the standard $n$-dimensional cube in $\mathbb{R}^n$. This paper provides an explicit combinatorial interpretation of the $h^\ast$-polynomial of $\mathcal{Q}_{n,k}$, as the ascent enumerator of certain words, and partly confirms some of Chapoton's conjectures on the lattice point enumeration of arbor polytopes in this special case. More specifically, the Ehrhart polynomial of $\mathcal{Q}_{n,k}$ is shown to be magic positive, by means of a new combinatorial parking model for cars, and the real-rootedness of its $h^\ast$-polynomial is deduced. The polynomial whose coefficients count the lattice points of $\mathcal{Q}_{n,k}$ by the number of their nonzero coordinates is shown to be gamma-positive and a combinatorial interpretation of the $h^\ast$-polynomial of any arbor polytope is conjectured.

Lattice point enumeration of polytopes associated to integer compositions
An $n$-dimensional lattice polytope ${\mathcal Q}_σ$ can be associated to any composition $σ$ of a positive integer $n$, as a special case of constructions due to Pitman--Stanley and Chapoton. The entries of the $h$-vector of $σ$, introduced by Chapoton, enumerate the lattice points in ${\mathcal Q}_σ$ by the number of their nonzero coordinates. Chapoton conjectured that this vector is equal to the $h$-vector of a flag simplicial polytope. This paper proves this conjecture. Moreover, it shows that the gamma-vector associated to the $h$-vector of $σ$ is nonnegative by means of an explicit combinatorial interpretation and confirms certain other conjectures of Chapoton on the lattice point enumeration of composition polytopes. A combinatorial interpretation of their $h^\ast$-polynomials is deduced.

A convex ear decomposition of the augmented Bergman complex of a matroid
In recent work of Braden, Huh, Matherne, Proudfoot and Wang, a class of simplicial complexes associated to matroids, called augmented Bergman complexes, was introduced. The present article concerns the face enumeration of these complexes. We prove that the augmented Bergman complex of any matroid admits a convex ear decomposition and deduce that augmented Bergman complexes are doubly Cohen--Macaulay and that they have top-heavy $h$-vectors. We provide some formulas for computing the $h$-polynomials of these complexes and exhibit examples which show that, in general, they are neither log-concave nor unimodal.

Veronese sections and interlacing matrices of polynomials and formal power series
The concept of a fully interlacing matrix of formal power series with real coefficients is introduced. This concept extends and strengthens that of an interlacing sequence of real-rooted polynomials with nonnegative coefficients, in the special case of row and column matrices. The fully interlacing property is shown to be preserved under matrix products, flips across the reverse diagonal and Veronese sections of the power series involved. These results and their corollaries generalize, unify and simplify several results which have previously appeared in the literature. An application to the theory of uniform triangulations of simplicial complexes is included.

Local $h$-polynomials, uniform triangulations and real-rootedness
Published in Combinatorica 45 (2025), Article no 36, 22pp • Search Publication
The local $h$-polynomial was introduced by Stanley as a fundamental enumerative invariant of a triangulation $Δ$ of a simplex. This polynomial is known to have nonnegative and symmetric coefficients and is conjectured to be $γ$-positive when $Δ$ is flag. This paper shows that the local $h$-polynomial has the stronger property of being real-rooted when $Δ$ is the barycentric subdivision of an arbitrary geometric triangulation $Γ$ of the simplex. An analogous result for edgewise subdivisions is proven. The proofs are based on a new combinatorial formula for the local $h$-polynomial of $Δ$, which is valid when $Δ$ is any uniform triangulation of $Γ$. A combinatorial interpretation of the local $h$-polynomial of the second barycentric subdivision of the simplex is deduced.
Two classes of posets with real-rooted chain polynomials
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 31 (2024), Research Paper 4.16, 22pp (electronic) • View PublicationBIB
The coefficients of the chain polynomial of a finite poset enumerate chains in the poset by their number of elements. It has been a challenging open problem to determine which posets have real-rooted chain polynomials. Two new classes of posets, namely those of all rank-selected subposets of Cohen-Macaulay simplicial posets and all noncrossing partition lattices associated to finite Coxeter groups, are shown to have this property. The first result generalizes one of Brenti and Welker. As a special case, the descent enumerator of permutations of the set $\{1, 2,\dots,n\}$ which have ascents at specified positions is shown to be real-rooted, hence log-concave and unimodal, and a good estimate for the location of the peak is deduced.

On the real-rootedness of the Eulerian transformation
Published in J. London Math. Soc. 111 (2025), Article ID e70083, 23p • View PublicationBIB
The Eulerian transformation is the linear operator on polynomials in one variable with real coefficients which maps the powers of this variable to the corresponding Eulerian polynomials. The derangement transformation is defined similarly. Brändén and Jochemko have conjectured that the Eulerian transforms of a class of polynomials with nonnegative coefficients, which includes those having all their roots in the interval $[-1,0]$, have only real zeros. This conjecture is proven in this paper. More general transformations are introduced in the combinatorial-geometric context of uniform triangulations of simplicial complexes, where Eulerian and derangement transformations arise in the special case of barycentric subdivision, and are shown to have strong unimodality and gamma-positivity properties. General real-rootedness conjectures for these transformations, which unify various results and conjectures in the literature, are also proposed.

Triangulations of simplicial complexes and theta polynomials
An enumerative theory of triangulations of simplicial complexes has been developed by Stanley. A key role in his theory is played by the local $h$-polynomial of a triangulation of a simplex. This paper develops a parallel theory, in which the role of the local $h$-polynomial is played by a simpler invariant, namely the theta polynomial. This allows one to deduce unimodality and gamma-positivity properties of $h$-polynomials of triangulations of simplicial complexes from corresponding properties of theta polynomials, which are studied here in some detail. To mention one concrete application, the $h$-polynomial of the antiprism triangulation of any simplicial homology sphere is shown to be gamma-positive, thus confirming Gal's conjecture in a new special case.
Chain enumeration, partition lattices and polynomials with only real roots
Published • View PublicationBIB
The coefficients of the chain polynomial of a finite poset enumerate chains in the poset by their number of elements. The chain polynomials of the partition lattices and their standard type $B$ analogues are shown to have only real roots. The real-rootedness of the chain polynomial is conjectured for all geometric lattices and is shown to be preserved by the pyramid and the prism operations on Cohen--Macaulay posets. As a result, new families of convex polytopes whose face lattices have real-rooted chain polynomials are presented. An application to the face enumeration of the second barycentric subdivision of the boundary complex of the simplex is also included.

Symmetric decompositions, triangulations and real-rootedness
Published • View PublicationBIB
Polynomials which afford nonnegative, real-rooted symmetric decompositions have been investigated recently in algebraic, enumerative and geometric combinatorics. Brändén and Solus have given sufficient conditions under which the image of a polynomial under a certain operator associated to barycentric subdivision has such a decomposition. This paper gives a new proof of their result which generalizes to subdivision operators in the setting of uniform triangulations of simplicial complexes, introduced by the first named author. Sufficient conditions under which these decompositions are also interlacing are described. Applications yield new classes of polynomials in geometric combinatorics which afford nonnegative, real-rooted symmetric decompositions. Some interesting questions in $f$-vector theory arise from this work.

Face numbers of barycentric subdivisions of cubical complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
The $h$-polynomial of the barycentric subdivision of any $n$-dimensional cubical complex with nonnegative cubical $h$-vector is shown to have only real roots and to be interlaced by the Eulerian polynomial of type $B_n$. This result applies to barycentric subdivisions of shellable cubical complexes and, in particular, to barycentric subdivisions of cubical convex polytopes and answers affirmatively a question of Brenti, Mohammadi and Welker.
Combinatorics of antiprism triangulations
Published • View PublicationBIB
The antiprism triangulation provides a natural way to subdivide a simplicial complex $Δ$, similar to barycentric subdivision, which appeared independently in combinatorial algebraic topology and computer science. It can be defined as the simplicial complex of chains of multi-pointed faces of $Δ$, from a combinatorial point of view, and by successively applying the antiprism construction, or balanced stellar subdivisions, on the faces of $Δ$, from a geometric point of view. This paper studies enumerative invariants associated to this triangulation, such as the transformation of the $h$-vector of $Δ$ under antiprism triangulation, and algebraic properties of its Stanley--Reisner ring. Among other results, it is shown that the $h$-polynomial of the antiprism triangulation of a simplex is real-rooted and that the antiprism triangulation of $Δ$ has the almost strong Lefschetz property over ${\mathbb R}$ for every shellable complex $Δ$. Several related open problems are discussed.

Face numbers of uniform triangulations of simplicial complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
A triangulation of a simplicial complex $Δ$ is called uniform if the $f$-vector of its restriction to a face of $Δ$ depends only on the dimension of that face. This paper proves that the entries of the $h$-vector of a uniform triangulation of $Δ$ can be expressed as nonnegative integer linear combinations of those of the $h$-vector of $Δ$, where the coefficients depend only on the dimension of $Δ$ and the $f$-vectors of the restrictions of the triangulation to simplices of various dimensions. Moreover, it provides information about these coefficients, including formulas, recurrence relations and various interpretations, and gives a criterion for the $h$-polynomial of a uniform triangulation to be real-rooted. These results unify and generalize several results in the literature about special types of triangulations, such as barycentric, edgewise and interval subdivisions.

Binomial Eulerian polynomials for colored permutations
Binomial Eulerian polynomials first appeared in work of Postnikov, Reiner and Williams on the face enumeration of generalized permutohedra. They are $γ$-positive (in particular, palindromic and unimodal) polynomials which can be interpreted as $h$-polynomials of certain flag simplicial polytopes and which admit interesting Schur $γ$-positive symmetric function generalizations. This paper introduces analogues of these polynomials for $r$-colored permutations with similar properties and uncovers some new instances of equivariant $γ$-positivity in geometric combinatorics.

Gamma-positivity in combinatorics and geometry
Gamma-positivity is an elementary property that polynomials with symmetric coefficients may have, which directly implies their unimodality. The idea behind it stems from work of Foata, Schützenberger and Strehl on the Eulerian polynomials; it was revived independently by Brändén and Gal in the course of their study of poset Eulerian polynomials and face enumeration of flag simplicial spheres, respectively, and has found numerous applications since then. This paper surveys some of the main results and open problems on gamma-positivity, appearing in various combinatorial or geometric contexts, as well as some of the diverse methods that have been used to prove it.

Some applications of Rees products of posets to equivariant gamma-positivity
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Rees product of partially ordered sets was introduced by Björner and Welker. Using the theory of lexicographic shellability, Linusson, Shareshian and Wachs proved formulas, of significance in the theory of gamma-positivity, for the dimension of the homology of the Rees product of a graded poset $P$ with a certain $t$-analogue of the chain of the same length as $P$. Equivariant generalizations of these formulas are proven in this paper, when a group of automorphisms acts on $P$, and are applied to establish the Schur gamma-positivity of certain symmetric functions arising in algebraic and geometric combinatorics.

The local $h$-polynomial of the edgewise subdivision of the simplex
The $r$-fold edgewise subdivision is a well studied flag triangulation of the simplex with interesting algebraic, combinatorial and geometric properties. An important enumerative invariant, namely the local $h$-polynomial, of this triangulation is computed and shown to be $γ$-nonnegative by providing explicit combinatorial interpretations to the corresponding coefficients. A construction of a flag triangulation of the seven-dimensional simplex whose local $h$-polynomial is not real-rooted is also described.

The symmetric group action on rank-selected posets of injective words
Published • View PublicationBIB
The symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ acts naturally on the poset of injective words over the alphabet $\{1, 2,\dots,n\}$. The induced representation on the homology of this poset has been computed by Reiner and Webb. We generalize their result by computing the representation of $\mathfrak{S}_n$ on the homology of all rank-selected subposets, in the sense of Stanley. A further generalization to the poset of $r$-colored injective words is given.

Edgewise Cohen-Macaulay connectivity of partially ordered sets
Published • View PublicationBIB
The proper parts of face lattices of convex polytopes are shown to satisfy a strong form of the Cohen--Macaulay property, namely that removing from their Hasse diagram all edges in any closed interval results in a Cohen--Macaulay poset of the same rank. A corresponding notion of edgewise Cohen--Macaulay connectivity for partially ordered sets is investigated. Examples and open questions are discussed.
