Parking functions, Smirnov words, and noncrossing Chow polynomials
We prove real-rootedness of the Chow polynomials of the noncrossing partition lattices by transferring tieless parking functions to finite-alphabet Smirnov words and applying a last-letter interlacing recurrence. We also derive a triangular recurrence for peaks and ties and identify the peakless-tieless descent polynomial as the Narayana polynomial. For the toric $g$-contributions of Ehrenborg--Hetyei--Readdy, we exhibit a fixed-row common interlacer and establish real-rootedness of all nonnegative row sums. Individual real-rootedness follows in particular; Q.~Xiao recently proved it independently by a different differential recurrence. We also give a separate finite Schur--Szegő convolution proof of the individual statement. These results prove Conjecture~4.2 of Xiao and Conjecture~11.2 of Ehrenborg--Hetyei--Readdy, with consequences for weakly 123-avoiding parking functions. We also prove real-rootedness for the image-size polynomial on all parking functions and for the ascent and descent polynomials of four two-pattern-avoiding classes.
Lascoux series, parking functions and noncrossing partitions
In the study of the generating series of Demazure characters, Lascoux used isobaric divided differences to define a family of polynomials $\mathcal{E}_σ(t)$ indexed by permutations $σ$, and asked for a satisfactory expression of these polynomials. In this paper we obtain a combinatorial interpretation of $\mathcal{E}_σ(t)$ for the permutation $σ=[2,3,\ldots,n,1]$ or its inverse in terms of the descent statistic of parking functions of length $n-1$. Based on this progress on Lascoux's open problem, we find that the polynomial $\mathcal{E}_σ(t)$ for this special case coincides with the $h$-polynomial $h(Δ(\mathrm{NC}_W),t)$ of the order complex of the noncrossing partition lattice associated to the irreducible Coxeter group $W$ of type $A_{n-1}$. We are inspired by this coincidence to give an operator approach to $h(Δ(\mathrm{NC}_W),t)$ for any finite Coxeter group $W$. As an application, we completely solve an open problem on $h(Δ(\mathrm{NC}_W),t)$ which was proposed by Athanasiadis, Douvropoulos and Kalampogia-Evangelinou. For any $k$-divisible noncrossing partition poset $\mathrm{NC}^{(k)}_W$, we also obtain the interlacing symmetric decomposition property of the $h$-polynomial $h(Δ(\mathrm{NC}^{(k)}_W),t)$.

Noncrossing Combinatorics, the Full Twist, and Decategorification of Knot Invariants
Much work in knot theory has consisted of categorifying, and thereby strengthening, knot invariants. We take the opposite approach: decategorification, more commonly called combinatorics. We introduce a technique that relates the dual braid group generators, the Hecke images of pure braids, and factorization problems in reflection groups to knot invariants. We prove that the $(a,z{=}0)$-HOMFLYPT polynomial can be computed as a solution to such a problem. This technique was motivated by Coxeter--Catalan combinatorics. For example, we give a new proof of EL-shellability of the noncrossing partition lattice using the image of the full twist in the Hecke algebra; in a surprising sort of combinatorial reciprocity, its inverse computes the homotopy type. Similarly, noncrossing partitions naturally arise from our construction applied to positive powers of the full twist, while cluster complexes come from the same construction applied to negative powers. In crystallographic type, we exploit the conjugacy of all Coxeter elements to give the first reflection subword models for rational noncrossing Catalan objects. Our reciprocity gives two models: one generalizing noncrossing partitions, and one generalizing clusters. Applying the same method produces two (rational) noncrossing parking models.
The Chow Polynomial of the Noncrossing Partition Lattice
We prove that the Chow polynomial of the noncrossing partition lattice is equal to the descent generating function of tieless parking functions. As a consequence, we obtain new results on the descent statistic for parking functions.

Noncrossing Partitions From Hull Configurations
Each finite configuration of points in the plane determines a corresponding lattice of noncrossing partitions. When these points form the vertex set of a convex polygon, the associated lattice is the classical noncrossing partition lattice (introduced by Kreweras in 1972), which makes many appearances in combinatorics and geometric group theory. If, on the other hand, all points of the configuration lie on a common line segment, the result is a Boolean lattice. In this article, we examine the more general class of hull configurations, which we define to be those which lie either on a line segment or on the boundary of a convex polygon. We prove that the corresponding lattices of noncrossing partitions are unions of maximal Boolean subposets and, under certain circumstances, have symmetric chain decompositions.
Noncrossing Partitions From Cones and Semicircles
Published in Discrete Mathematics (2026) 349-2 • View PublicationBIB
For each finite configuration of distinct points in the plane, there is an associated lattice of noncrossing partitions. When these points form the vertices of a convex polygon, the result is the classical noncrossing partition lattice, which is enumerated by the Catalan numbers and satisfies many other useful properties. In this article, we examine three variations of this lattice which arise when the starting configuration is allowed to have points on the sides of a convex polygon rather than just the vertex set.
Permutahedron Triangulations via Total Linear Stability and the Dual Braid Group
For each finite Coxeter group $W$ and each standard Coxeter element of $W$, we construct a triangulation of the $W$-permutahedron. For particular realizations of the $W$-permutahedron, we show that this is a regular triangulation induced by a height function coming from the theory of total linear stability for Dynkin quivers. We also explore several notable combinatorial properties of these triangulations that relate the Bruhat order, the noncrossing partition lattice, and Cambrian congruences. Each triangulation gives an explicit mechanism for relating two different presentations of the corresponding braid group (the standard Artin presentation and Bessis's dual presentation). This is a step toward uniformly proving conjectural simple, explicit, and type-uniform presentations for the corresponding pure braid group.

Geometric Combinatorics of Polynomials II: Polynomials and Cell Structures
This article introduces a finite piecewise Euclidean cell complex homeomorphic to the space of monic centered complex polynomials of degree $d$ whose critical values lie in a fixed closed rectangular region. We call this the branched rectangle complex since its points are indexed by marked $d$-sheeted planar branched covers of the fixed rectangle. The vertices of the cell structure are indexed by the combinatorial "basketballs" studied by Martin, Savitt and Singer. Structurally, the branched rectangle complex is a full subcomplex of a direct product of two copies of the order complex of the noncrossing partition lattice. Topologically, it is homeomorphic to the closed $2n$-dimensional ball where $n=d-1$. Metrically, the simplices in each factor are orthoschemes. It can also be viewed as a compactification of the space of all monic centered complex polynomials of degree $d$. We also introduce a finite piecewise Euclidean cell complex homeomorphic to the space of monic centered complex polynomials of degree $d$ whose critical values lie in a fixed closed annular region. We call this the branched annulus complex since its points are indexed by marked $d$-sheeted planar branched covers of the fixed annulus. It can be constructed from the branched rectangle complex as a cellular quotient by isometric face identifications. And it can be viewed as a compactification of the space of all monic centered complex polynomials of degree $d$ with distinct roots. Finally, the branched annulus complex deformation retracts to the branched circle complex, which we identify with the dual braid complex. Our explicit embedding of the dual braid complex as a spine for the space of polynomials with distinct roots provides a direct proof that these two classifying spaces for the braid group are homotopy equivalent.
Two classes of posets with real-rooted chain polynomials
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 31 (2024), Research Paper 4.16, 22pp (electronic) • View PublicationBIB
The coefficients of the chain polynomial of a finite poset enumerate chains in the poset by their number of elements. It has been a challenging open problem to determine which posets have real-rooted chain polynomials. Two new classes of posets, namely those of all rank-selected subposets of Cohen-Macaulay simplicial posets and all noncrossing partition lattices associated to finite Coxeter groups, are shown to have this property. The first result generalizes one of Brenti and Welker. As a special case, the descent enumerator of permutations of the set $\{1, 2,\dots,n\}$ which have ascents at specified positions is shown to be real-rooted, hence log-concave and unimodal, and a good estimate for the location of the peak is deduced.
Noncrossing Partition Lattices from Planar Configurations
Published in Discrete & Computational Geometry (2024) • View PublicationBIB
The lattice of noncrossing partitions is well-known for its wide variety of combinatorial appearances and properties. For example, the lattice is rank-symmetric and enumerated by the Catalan numbers. In this article, we introduce a large family of new noncrossing partition lattices with both of these properties, each parametrized by a configuration of n points in the plane.

Noncrossing partitions of a marked surface
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define noncrossing partitions of a marked surface without punctures (interior marked points). We show that the natural partial order on noncrossing partitions is a graded lattice and describe its rank function topologically. Lower intervals in the lattice are isomorphic to products of noncrossing partition lattices of other surfaces. We similarly define noncrossing partitions of a symmetric marked surface with double points and prove some of the analogous results. The combination of symmetry and double points plays a role that one might have expected to be played by punctures.

On the homology of the noncrossing partition lattice and the Milnor fibre
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathcal{L}$ be the noncrossing partition lattice associated to a finite Coxeter group $W$. In this paper we construct explicit bases for the top homology groups of intervals and rank-selected subposets of $\mathcal{L}$. We define a multiplicative structure on the Whitney homology of $\mathcal{L}$ in terms of the basis, and the resulting algebra has similarities to the Orlik-Solomon algebra. As an application, we obtain four chain complexes which compute the integral homology of the Milnor fibre of the reflection arrangement of $W$, the Milnor fibre of the discriminant of $W$, the hyperplane complement of $W$ and the Artin group of type $W$, respectively. We also tabulate some computational results on the integral homology of the Milnor fibres.

Counting chains in the noncrossing partition lattice via the W-Laplacian
Published in J. Algebra 602 (2022), 381--404 • View PublicationBIB
We give an elementary, case-free, Coxeter-theoretic derivation of the formula $h^nn!/|W|$ for the number of maximal chains in the noncrossing partition lattice $NC(W)$ of a real reflection group $W$. Our proof proceeds by comparing the Deligne-Reading recursion with a parabolic recursion for the characteristic polynomial of the $W$-Laplacian matrix considered in our previous work. We further discuss the consequences of this formula for the geometric group theory of spherical and affine Artin groups.

Koszulity of dual braid monoid algebras via cluster complexes
Published in Annales Mathématiques Blaise Pascal 30(2) (2023), 141--188 • View PublicationBIB
The dual braid monoid was introduced by Bessis in his work on complex reflection arrangements. The goal of this work is to show that Koszul duality provides a nice interplay between the dual braid monoid and the cluster complex introduced by Fomin and Zelevinsky. Firstly, we prove koszulity of the dual braid monoid algebra, by building explicitly the minimal free resolution of the ground field. This is done explicitly using some chains complexes defined in terms of the positive part of the cluster complex. Secondly, we derive various properties of the quadratic dual algebra. We show that it is naturally graded by the noncrossing partition lattice. We get an explicit basis, naturally indexed by positive faces of the cluster complex. Moreover, we find the structure constants via a geometric rule in terms of the cluster fan. Eventually, we realize this dual algebra as a quotient of a Nichols algebra. This latter fact makes a connection with results of Zhang, who used the same algebra to compute the homology of Milnor fibers of reflection arrangements.

Coxeter Pop-Tsack Torsing
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a finite irreducible Coxeter group $W$ with a fixed Coxeter element $c$, we define the Coxeter pop-tsack torsing operator $\mathsf{Pop}_T:W\to W$ by $\mathsf{Pop}_T(w)=w\cdotπ_T(w)^{-1}$, where $π_T(w)$ is the join in the noncrossing partition lattice $\mathrm{NC}(w,c)$ of the set of reflections lying weakly below $w$ in the absolute order. This definition serves as a "Bessis dual" version of the first author's notion of a Coxeter pop-stack sorting operator, which, in turn, generalizes the pop-stack-sorting map on symmetric groups. We show that if $W$ is coincidental or of type $D$, then the identity element of $W$ is the unique periodic point of $\mathsf{Pop}_T$ and the maximum size of a forward orbit of $\mathsf{Pop}_T$ is the Coxeter number $h$ of $W$. In each of these types, we obtain a natural lift from $W$ to the dual braid monoid of $W$. We also prove that $W$ is coincidental if and only if it has a unique forward orbit of size $h$. For arbitrary $W$, we show that the forward orbit of $c^{-1}$ under $\mathsf{Pop}_T$ has size $h$ and is isolated in the sense that none of the non-identity elements of the orbit have preimages lying outside of the orbit.
The Noncrossing Bond Poset of a Graph
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics (2020) Vol 27, Issue 4 • View PublicationBIB
The partition lattice and noncrossing partition lattice are well studied objects in combinatorics. Given a graph $G$ on vertex set $\{1,2,\dots, n\}$, its bond lattice, $L_G$, is the subposet of the partition lattice formed by restricting to the partitions whose blocks induce connected subgraphs of $G$. In this article, we introduce a natural noncrossing analogue of the bond lattice, the noncrossing bond poset, $NC_G$, obtained by restricting to the noncrossing partitions of $L_G$. Both the noncrossing partition lattice and the bond lattice have many nice combinatorial properties. We show that, for several families of graphs, the noncrossing bond poset also exhibits these properties. We present simple necessary and sufficient conditions on the graph to ensure the noncrossing bond poset is a lattice. Additionally, for several families of graphs, we give combinatorial descriptions of the Möbius function and characteristic polynomial of the noncrossing bond poset. These descriptions are in terms of a noncrossing analogue of non-broken circuit (NBC) sets of the graphs and can be thought of as a noncrossing version of Whitney's NBC theorem for the chromatic polynomial. We also consider the shellability and supersolvability of the noncrossing bond poset, providing sufficient conditions for both. We end with some open problems.

Hochschild lattices and shuffle lattices
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 103 (2022), article 103521 • View PublicationBIB
In his study of a Hochschild complex arising in connection with the free loop fibration, S. Saneblidze defined the freehedron, a certain polytope constructed via a truncation process from the hypercube. It was recently conjectured by F. Chapoton and proven by C. Combe that a certain orientation of the $1$-skeleton of the freehedron carries a lattice structure. The resulting lattice was dubbed the Hochschild lattice and is congruence uniform and extremal. These properties allow for the definition of three associated structures: the Galois graph, the canonical join complex and the core label order. In this article, we study and characterize these structures. We exhibit an isomorphism from the core label order of the Hochschild lattice to a particular shuffle lattice of C. Greene. We also uncover an enumerative connection between the core label order of the Hochschild lattice, a certain order extension of its poset of irreducibles and the freehedron. These connections nicely parallel the situation surrounding the better-known Tamari lattices, noncrossing partition lattices and associahedra.

On the Sperner property for the absolute order on complex reflection groups
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics 3(3) (2020), p.791-800 • View PublicationBIB
Two partial orders on a reflection group, the codimension order and the prefix order, are together called the absolute order when they agree. We show that in this case the absolute order on a complex reflection group has the strong Sperner property, except possibly for the Coxeter group of type $D_n$, for which this property is conjectural. The Sperner property had previously been established for the noncrossing partition lattice $NC_W$, a certain maximal interval in the absolute order, but not for the entire poset, except in the case of the symmetric group. We also show that neither the codimension order nor the prefix order has the Sperner property for general complex reflection groups.
The Whitney Duals of a Graded Poset
We introduce the notion of a \emph{Whitney dual} of a graded poset. Two posets are Whitney duals to each other if (the absolute value of) their Whitney numbers of the first and second kind are interchanged between the two posets. We define new types of edge and chain-edge labelings which we call \emph{Whitney labelings}. We prove that every graded poset with a Whitney labeling has a Whitney dual. Moreover, we show how to explicitly construct a Whitney dual using a technique involving quotient posets. As applications of our main theorem, we show that geometric lattices, the lattice of noncrossing partitions, the poset of weighted partitions studied by González D'León-Wachs, and most of the R$^*$S-labelable posets studied by Simion-Stanley all have Whitney duals. Our technique gives a combinatorial description of a Whitney dual of the noncrossing partition lattice in terms of a family of noncrossing Dyck paths. Our method also provides an explanation of the Whitney duality between the poset of weighted partitions and a poset of rooted forests studied by Reiner and Sagan. An integral part of this explanation is a new chain-edge labeling for the poset of weighted partitions which we show is a Whitney labeling. Finally, we show that a graded poset with a Whitney labeling admits a local action of the $0$-Hecke algebra of type $A$ on its set of maximal chains. The characteristic of the associated representation is Ehrenborg's flag quasisymmetric function. The existence of this action implies, using a result of McNamara, that when the maximal intervals of the constructed Whitney duals are bowtie-free, they are also snellable. In the case where these maximal intervals are lattices, they are supersolvable.

Undesired parking spaces and contractible pieces of the noncrossing partition link
Published • View PublicationBIB
There are two natural simplicial complexes associated to the noncrossing partition lattice: the order complex of the full lattice and the order complex of the lattice with its bounding elements removed. The latter is a complex that we call the noncrossing partition link because it is the link of an edge in the former. The first author and his coauthors conjectured that various collections of simplices of the noncrossing partition link (determined by the undesired parking spaces in the corresponding parking functions) form contractible subcomplexes. In this article we prove their conjecture by combining the fact that the star of a simplex in a flag complex is contractible with the second author's theory of noncrossing hypertrees.
