Lascoux series, parking functions and noncrossing partitions
In the study of the generating series of Demazure characters, Lascoux used isobaric divided differences to define a family of polynomials $\mathcal{E}_σ(t)$ indexed by permutations $σ$, and asked for a satisfactory expression of these polynomials. In this paper we obtain a combinatorial interpretation of $\mathcal{E}_σ(t)$ for the permutation $σ=[2,3,\ldots,n,1]$ or its inverse in terms of the descent statistic of parking functions of length $n-1$. Based on this progress on Lascoux's open problem, we find that the polynomial $\mathcal{E}_σ(t)$ for this special case coincides with the $h$-polynomial $h(Δ(\mathrm{NC}_W),t)$ of the order complex of the noncrossing partition lattice associated to the irreducible Coxeter group $W$ of type $A_{n-1}$. We are inspired by this coincidence to give an operator approach to $h(Δ(\mathrm{NC}_W),t)$ for any finite Coxeter group $W$. As an application, we completely solve an open problem on $h(Δ(\mathrm{NC}_W),t)$ which was proposed by Athanasiadis, Douvropoulos and Kalampogia-Evangelinou. For any $k$-divisible noncrossing partition poset $\mathrm{NC}^{(k)}_W$, we also obtain the interlacing symmetric decomposition property of the $h$-polynomial $h(Δ(\mathrm{NC}^{(k)}_W),t)$.

Cyclic sieving phenomena on parabolic classes of faces of the cluster complex
The cyclic sieving phenomenon was introduced by Reiner, Stanton and White in 2004 as a generalization of Stembridge's $q=-1$ phenomenon. In a paper from 2008, Eu and Fu studied many occurrences of this phenomenon on the faces of the generalized cluster complex with the action of the Fomin-Reading rotation in the classical types $A_n$, $B_n$, $D_n$ and $I_2(k)$. There was yet no known uniform $q$-analogue of the $k$-face numbers of these complexes. In a more recent paper from 2023, Douvropoulos and Josuat-Vergès provided a refinement of the enumeration of the faces of the generalized cluster complex using a uniform formula. For a parabolic subgroup $W_X \subset W$ of the associated Coxeter group $W$, their formula factorises nicely under the assumption that $N_W(W_X)/W_X$ acts as a reflection group on $X$, which is very often the case. Using this condition, we provide a uniform refinement of these cyclic sieving phenomena using a $q$-analogue of their main formula with a type by type proof based on the classification of finite irreducible Coxeter groups.

The strong hull property for affine irreducible Coxeter groups of rank 3
A conjecture proposed by Gaetz and Gao asserts that the Cayley graph of any Coxeter group possesses the strong hull property. In this paper, we prove this conjecture for all affine irreducible Coxeter groups of rank 3. Our approach exploits the geometry of affine buildings to reduce the analysis of convex hulls to finitely many manageable configurations. These geometric reduction techniques offer a novel framework that may be applicable to higher-rank cases.

Abstract Regular Polytopes of Finite Irreducible Coxeter Groups
Here, for $W$ the Coxeter group $\mathrm{D}_n$ where $n > 4$, it is proved that the maximal rank of an abstract regular polytope for $W$ is $n - 1$ if $n$ is even and $n$ if $n$ is odd. Further it is shown that $W$ has abstract regular polytopes of rank $r$ for all $r$ such that $3 \leq r \leq n - 1$, if $n$ is even, and $3 \leq r \leq n$, if $n$ is odd. The possible ranks of abstract regular polytopes for the exceptional finite irreducible Coxeter groups are also determined.

A Central Limit Theorem on Two-Sided Descents of Mallows Distributed Elements of Finite Coxeter Groups
The Mallows distribution is a non-uniform distribution, first introduced over permutations to study non-ranked data, in which permutations are weighted according to their length. It can be generalized to any Coxeter group, and we study the distribution of $\text{des}(w) + \text{des}(w^{-1})$ where $w$ is a Mallows distributed element of a finite irreducible Coxeter group. We show that the asymptotic behavior of this statistic is Guassian. The proof uses a size-bias coupling with Stein's method.

How large is the character degree sum compared to the character table sum for a finite group?
In 1961, Solomon gave upper and lower bounds for the sum of all the entries in the character table of a finite group in terms of elementary properties of the group. In a different direction, we consider the ratio of the character table sum to the sum of the entries in the first column, also known as the character degree sum, in this work. First, we propose that this ratio is at most two for many natural groups. Secondly, we extend a conjecture of Fields to postulate that this ratio is at least one with equality if and only if the group is abelian. We establish the validity of this property and conjecture for all finite irreducible Coxeter groups. In addition, we prove the conjecture for generalized symmetric groups. The main tool we use is that the sum of a column in the character table of an irreducible Coxeter group (resp. generalized symmetric group) is given by the number of square roots (resp. absolute square roots) of the corresponding conjugacy class representative. As a byproduct of our results, we show that the asymptotics of character table sums is the same as the number of involutions in symmetric, hyperoctahedral and demihyperoctahedral groups. We also derive explicit generating functions for the character table sums for these latter groups as infinite products of continued fractions. In the same spirit, we prove similar generating function formulas for the number of square roots and absolute square roots in $n$ for the generalized symmetric groups $G(r,1,n)$.
Involutions in Coxeter groups
Published in Algebras and Representation Theory, volume 28 (2025), 647-667 • View PublicationBIB
We combinatorially characterize the number $\mathrm{cc}_2$ of conjugacy classes of involutions in any Coxeter group in terms of higher rank odd graphs. This notion naturally generalizes the concept of odd graphs, used previously to count the number of conjugacy classes of reflections. We provide uniform bounds and discuss some extremal cases, where the number $\mathrm{cc}_2$ is smallest or largest possible. Moreover, we provide formulae for $\mathrm{cc}_2$ in free and direct products as well as for some finite and affine types, besides computing $\mathrm{cc}_2$ for all triangle groups, and all affine irreducible Coxeter groups of rank up to eleven.

Pop-Stack Operators for Torsion Classes and Cambrian Lattices
The pop-stack operator of a finite lattice $L$ is the map $\mathrm{pop}^{\downarrow}_L\colon L\to L$ that sends each element $x\in L$ to the meet of $\{x\}\cup\text{cov}_L(x)$, where $\text{cov}_L(x)$ is the set of elements covered by $x$ in $L$. We study several properties of the pop-stack operator of $\mathrm{tors}Λ$, the lattice of torsion classes of a $τ$-tilting finite algebra $Λ$ over a field $K$. We describe the pop-stack operator in terms of certain mutations of 2-term simple-minded collections. This allows us to describe preimages of a given torsion class under the pop-stack operator. We then specialize our attention to Cambrian lattices of a finite irreducible Coxeter group $W$. Using tools from representation theory, we provide simple Coxeter-theoretic and lattice-theoretic descriptions of the image of the pop-stack operator of a Cambrian lattice (which can be stated without representation theory). When specialized to a bipartite Cambrian lattice of type A, this result settles a conjecture of Choi and Sun. We also settle a related enumerative conjecture of Defant and Williams. When $L$ is an arbitrary lattice quotient of the weak order on $W$, we prove that the maximum size of a forward orbit under the pop-stack operator of $L$ is at most the Coxeter number of $W$; when $L$ is a Cambrian lattice, we provide an explicit construction to show that this maximum forward orbit size is actually equal to the Coxeter number.
Algebraic Enumeration of Polypolyhedra

Polypolyhedra are edge-transitive compounds of polyhedra. In this paper we use group theory to determine the number of distinct polypolyhedra whose symmetry group is any given finite irreducible Coxeter group. We apply this result in order to enumerate the 3-dimensional polypolyhedra.

Dynamics of Pop-Tsack Torsing
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a finite irreducible Coxeter group $(W,S)$ with a fixed Coxeter element $c$ and set of reflections $T$, Defant and Williams define a pop-tsack torsing operation $\mathrm{Popt}\colon W \to W$ given by $\mathrm{Popt}(w) = w \cdot π_T(w)^{-1}$ where $π_T(w) = \bigvee_{t \leq_{T}w, \ t \in T}^{NC(w,c)}t$ is the join of all reflections lying below $w$ in the absolute order in the non-crossing partition lattice $NC(w,c)$. This is a "dual" notion of the pop-stack sorting operator $\mathrm{Pops}$ introduced by Defant as a way to generalize the pop-stack sorting operator on $\mathfrak{S}_n$ to general Coxeter groups. Define the forward orbit of an element $w \in W$ to be $O_{\mathrm{Popt}}(w) = \{w, \mathrm{Popt}(w), \mathrm{Popt}^2(w), \ldots \}$. Defant and Williams established the length of the longest possible forward orbits $\max_{w \in W}|O_{\mathrm{Popt}}(w)|$ for Coxeter groups of coincidental types and type $D$ in terms of the corresponding Coxeter number of the group. In their paper, they also proposed multiple conjectures about enumerating elements with near maximal orbit length. We resolve all the conjectures that they have put forth about enumeration, and in the process we give complete classifications of these elements of Coxeter groups of types $A,B$ and $D$ with near maximal orbit lengths.

Coxeter Pop-Tsack Torsing
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a finite irreducible Coxeter group $W$ with a fixed Coxeter element $c$, we define the Coxeter pop-tsack torsing operator $\mathsf{Pop}_T:W\to W$ by $\mathsf{Pop}_T(w)=w\cdotπ_T(w)^{-1}$, where $π_T(w)$ is the join in the noncrossing partition lattice $\mathrm{NC}(w,c)$ of the set of reflections lying weakly below $w$ in the absolute order. This definition serves as a "Bessis dual" version of the first author's notion of a Coxeter pop-stack sorting operator, which, in turn, generalizes the pop-stack-sorting map on symmetric groups. We show that if $W$ is coincidental or of type $D$, then the identity element of $W$ is the unique periodic point of $\mathsf{Pop}_T$ and the maximum size of a forward orbit of $\mathsf{Pop}_T$ is the Coxeter number $h$ of $W$. In each of these types, we obtain a natural lift from $W$ to the dual braid monoid of $W$. We also prove that $W$ is coincidental if and only if it has a unique forward orbit of size $h$. For arbitrary $W$, we show that the forward orbit of $c^{-1}$ under $\mathsf{Pop}_T$ has size $h$ and is isolated in the sense that none of the non-identity elements of the orbit have preimages lying outside of the orbit.

Pop-Stack-Sorting for Coxeter Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $W$ be an irreducible Coxeter group. We define the Coxeter pop-stack-sorting operator $\mathsf{Pop}:W\to W$ to be the map that fixes the identity element and sends each nonidentity element $w$ to the meet of the elements covered by $w$ in the right weak order. When $W$ is the symmetric group $S_n$, $\mathsf{Pop}$ coincides with the pop-stack-sorting map. Generalizing a theorem about the pop-stack-sorting map due to Ungar, we prove that \[\sup\limits_{w\in W}\left|O_{\mathsf{Pop}}(w)\right|=h,\] where $h$ is the Coxeter number of $W$ (with $h=\infty$ if $W$ is infinite) and $O_f(w)$ denotes the forward orbit of $w$ under a map $f$. When $W$ is finite, this result is equivalent to the statement that the maximum number of terms appearing in the Brieskorn normal form of an element of $W$ is $h-1$. More generally, we define a map $f:W\to W$ to be compulsive if for every $w\in W$, $f(w)$ is less than or equal to $\mathsf{Pop}(w)$ in the right weak order. We prove that if $f$ is compulsive, then $\sup\limits_{w\in W}|O_f(w)|\leq h$. This result is new even for symmetric groups. We prove that $2$-pop-stack-sortable elements in type $B$ are in bijection with $2$-pop-stack-sortable permutations in type $A$, which were enumerated by Pudwell and Smith. Claesson and Gudmundsson proved that for each fixed nonnegative integer $t$, the generating function that counts $t$-pop-stack-sortable permutations in type $A$ is rational; we establish analogous results in types $B$ and $\widetilde A$.

Lucas atoms
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given two variables $s$ and $t$, the associated sequence of Lucas polynomials is defined inductively by $\{0\}=0$, $\{1\}=1$, and $\{n\}=s\{n-1\}+t\{n-2\}$ for $n\ge2$. An integer (e.g., a Catalan number) defined by an expression of the form $\prod_i n_i/\prod_j k_j$ has a Lucas analogue obtained by replacing each factor with the corresponding Lucas polynomial. There has been interest in deciding when such expressions, which are a priori only rational functions, are actually polynomials in $s,t$. The approaches so far have been combinatorial. We introduce a powerful algebraic method for answering this question by factoring $\{n\}=\prod_{d|n} P_d(s,t)$, where we call the polynomials $P_d(s,t)$ Lucas atoms. This permits us to show that the Lucas analogues of the Fuss-Catalan and Fuss-Narayana numbers for all irreducible Coxeter groups are polynomials in $s,t$. Using gamma expansions, a technique which has recently become popular in combinatorics and geometry, one can show that the Lucas atoms have a close relationship with cyclotomic polynomials $Φ_d(q)$. Certain results about the $Φ_d(q)$ can then be lifted to Lucas atoms. In particular, one can prove analogues of theorems of Gauss and Lucas, deduce reduction formulas, and evaluate the $P_d(s,t)$ at various specific values of the variables.

Birkhoff polytopes of different type and the orthant-lattice property
The Birkhoff polytope, defined to be the convex hull of $n\times n$ permutation matrices, is a well studied polytope in the context of the Ehrhart theory. This polytope is known to have many desirable properties, such as the Gorenstein property and existence of regular, unimodular triangulations. In this paper, we study analogues of the Birkhoff polytope for finite irreducible Coxeter groups of other types. We focus on a type-$B$ Birkhoff polytope $\mathcal{BB}(n)$ arising from signed permutation matrices and prove that it and its dual polytope are reflexive, and hence Gorenstein, and also possess regular, unimodular triangulations. Noting that our triangulation proofs do not rely on the combinatorial structure of $\mathcal{BB}(n)$, we define the notion of an orthant-lattice property polytope and use this to prove more general results for the existence of regular, unimodular triangulations and unimodular covers for a significant family of reflexive polytopes. We conclude by remarking on some connections to Gale-duality, Birkhoff polytopes of other types, and possible applications of orthant-lattice property.

Artin Groups and Iwahori-Hecke algebras over finite fields
In this doctoral thesis, we will determine the image of Artin groups associated to all finite irreducible Coxeter groups inside their associated finite Iwahori-Hecke algebra. This was done in type $A$ by Brunat, Magaard and Marin. The Zariski closure of the image was determined in the generic case by Marin. It is suggested by strong approximation that the results should be similar in the finite case. However, the conditions required to use are much too strong and would only provide a portion of the results. We show in this thesis that they are but that new phenomena arise from the different field factorizations. The techniques used in the finite case are very different from the ones in the generic case. The main arguments come from finite group theory. In high dimension, we will use a theorem by Guralnick-Saxl which uses the classification of finite simple groups to give a condition for subgroups of linear groups to be classical groups in a natural representation. In low dimension, we will mainly use the classification of maximal subgroups of classical groups determined by Bray, Holt and Roney-Dougal for the complicated cases. We find some new $W$-graphs in types $H_4$, $E_6$ and $E_8$ which provide different information from the usual ones. They are all associated in a natural way to a bilinear form which is very complicated to obtain in the previous models. In this model, the bilinear form is obtained using only the two-colorability and its matrix in a well chosen basis is anti-diagonal. The uniqueness properties can probably be extended in a more general setting and understanding which setting this is may be worth considering.

Expected length of a product of random reflections
We present a simple formula for the expected number of inversions in a permutation of size $n$ obtained by applying $t$ random (not necessarily adjacent) transpositions to the identity permutation. More general, for any finite irreducible Coxeter group belonging to one of the infinite families (type A, B, D, and I), an exact expression is obtained for the expected length of a product of $t$ random reflections.

Involutory reflection groups and their models

A finite subgroup of $GL(n,\mathbb C)$ is involutory if the sum of the dimensions of its irreducible complex representations is given by the number of absolute involutions in the group. A uniform combinatorial model is constructed for all non-exceptional irreducible complex reflection groups which are involutory including, in particular, all infinite families of finite irreducible Coxeter groups.
