Matchings and shape-Wilf-Equivalence of sets of patterns of length three I: Triples
Permutation pattern avoidance on Ferrers boards has become a central topic in enumerative combinatorics with important connections to matchings, set partitions, and other combinatorial structures as it allows one to build families of Wilf-equivalent patterns. While shape-Wilf-equivalence classes have been completely determined for individual patterns and pairs of patterns of length three, the corresponding classification for larger pattern sets has remained open. In this paper, we provide a complete classification of the shape-Wilf-equivalence classes of triples of patterns of length three. Our proofs use a bijective encoding of pattern avoiding transversals to establish all equivalence classes. As an application, we enumerate matchings avoiding triples of patterns of length three for all but two equivalence classes, extending previous results of Bloom and Elizalde. These enumerative results identify additional families of combinatorial objects counted by the Fuss-Catalan numbers and by other integer sequences appearing in the OEIS.

Triangulated polygons and Y-frieze patterns
In the spirit of Conway and Coxeter, we classify all $\mathbf{Y}$-frieze patterns of type $A_n$. In particular, we settle a conjecture made by de Saint Germain that all such $\mathbf{Y}$-frieze patterns arise from Conway-Coxeter frieze patterns. Moreover, our approach naturally leads to the enumeration of these $\mathbf{Y}$-frieze patterns in terms of Fuss-Catalan numbers.
Classical and vincular patterns of length three in generalized alternating permutations
Let k be an integer at least 2, and let D_{N,k} be the set of permutations of {1,...,N} whose descent set is exactly {k, 2k, ..., k*floor((N-1)/k)}. We enumerate the elements of D_{N,k} avoiding each classical and each vincular pattern of length three. For classical patterns, we give recursive bijections from the 132- and 231-avoiding classes to ordered forests of complete k-ary trees, obtaining the Raney number. The 213- and 312-avoiding classes are obtained from these forest bijections by completing the last block and applying reverse-complement symmetry. The remaining classical case 321 is expressed by RSK. For vincular patterns, we enumerate the six fully consecutive patterns and the twelve patterns with exactly one adjacency. The closed-form results are accompanied by bijective models: the Catalan, Raney, Fuss-Catalan, and RSK cases are natural k-ary or fixed-descent extensions of classical bijections, while the product and poset cases arise from block-insertion and record/tree-poset encodings forced by the adjacency conditions.

On (102,000)-avoiding inversion sequences
In this article, we study (102,000)-avoiding inversion sequences with a fixed number of distinct elements. By introducing simple H-paths, we derive the trivariate generating function for these inversion sequences with respect to their length, number of distinct elements, and rank. As consequences, we obtain an explicit formula for the number of (102,000)-avoiding inversion sequences with fixed length and number of distinct elements and we also provide a formula for those with fixed number of distinct elements and rank. In particular, we show that both the number of (102,000)-avoiding inversion sequences with a fixed number of distinct elements whose maximum element occurs exactly once and the number of those whose rank is zero are given by the 3-Fuss-Catalan numbers.
Sharp Fuss-Catalan thresholds in graph bootstrap percolation
We study graph bootstrap percolation on the Erdős-Rényi random graph ${\mathcal G}_{n,p}$. For all $r \ge 5$, we locate the sharp $K_r$-percolation threshold $p_c \sim (γn)^{-1/λ}$, solving a problem of Balogh, Bollobás and Morris. The case $r=3$ is the classical graph connectivity threshold, and the threshold for $r=4$ was found using strong connections with the well-studied $2$-neighbor dynamics from statistical physics. When $r \ge 5$, such connections break down, and the process exhibits much richer behavior. The constants $λ=λ(r)$ and $γ=γ(r)$ in $p_c$ are determined by a class of $\left({r\choose2}-1\right)$-ary tree-like graphs, which we call $K_r$-tree witness graphs. These graphs are associated with the most efficient ways of adding a new edge in the $K_r$-dynamics, and they can be counted using the Fuss-Catalan numbers. Also, in the subcritical setting, we determine the asymptotic number of edges added to ${\mathcal G}_{n,p}$, showing that the edge density increases only by a constant factor, whose value we identify.

Symmetry in Tree Parking Distributions
In this paper, we explore parking distributions on caterpillar trees, focusing on two primary statistics: the number of lucky cars and the frequency with which cars prefer specific parking spaces. We use first-return decomposition to reveal a symmetry in their joint distribution and develop a $q, t$-analog of the Fuss-Catalan generating function. We prove that this generating function exhibits specific symmetry and satisfies a functional equation. Additionally, we extend our findings to any m statistics that satisfy certain criteria, presenting a concrete example of such $m$ statistics to illustrate the broader applicability of our results.
Catalan number sequences and generalized action graphs
Published in Mathematics Exchange 18 (2025) 88-106 • View PublicationBIB
Action graphs emerged from work of Bergner and Hackney on category actions in the context of Reedy categories. Alvarez, Bergner, and Lopez showed that action graphs could be inductively generated without reference to category actions and have a close relationship with the sequence of Catalan numbers. These graphs were further generalized in work of Cressman, Lin, Nguyen, and Wiljanen, who showed that the Fuss-Catalan numbers have a similar relation to another set of inductively defined directed graphs. In our paper, we consider several other sequences related to the Catalan numbers, namely Catalan's triangle, $(a,b)$-Catalan numbers, internal triangles, and super Catalan numbers. We show action graphs cannot be generalized to Catalan's triangle, $(a,b)$-Catalan numbers, nor internal triangles. We also conjecture a method for constructing action graphs for the Super Catalan numbers.

Fundamental and homogeneous bases of Hopf algebras built from nonsymmetric operads
We introduce new partial order structures on the underlying sets of free nonsymmetric operads. These posets involve decorated ordered rooted trees, and their terminal intervals are lattices. These lattices are not graded, not self-dual, and not semi-distributive, but they are EL-shellable, and their Mbius functions take values in $\{-1, 0, 1\}$. They admit sublattices on the families of $m$-Fuss-Catalan objects and of forests of trees. This latter order structure is used to construct two new bases for the natural Hopf algebras of free nonsymmetric operads: a fundamental basis and a homogeneous basis. Along with the already known elementary basis of these Hopf algebras, this yields a triple of bases. The situation is similar to what is observed in the Hopf algebras of Malvenuto-Reutenauer, Loday-Ronco, and noncommutative symmetric functions, each of which presents such triples of bases and basis changes involving, respectively, the right weak partial order, the Tamari partial order, and the Boolean lattice partial order.

$d$-orthogonal polynomials, Fuss-Catalan matrices and lattice paths
In this note, we show how to define certain Riordan arrays, that we call the Fuss-Catalan-Riordan arrays, by means of a special family of $d$-orthogonal polynomials. We relate the Fuss-Catalan Riordan arrays to the Fuss Catalan numbers, and to certain lattice paths. We emphasise the role of the production matrices of the Riordan arrays that we encounter in our study.

On a New Congruence in the Catalan Triangle
For $0\leq k \leq n$, the number $C(n,k)$ represents the number of all lattice paths in the plane from the point $(0,0)$ to the point $(n,k)$, using steps $(1,0)$ and $(0,1)$, that never rise above the main diagonal $y=x$. The Fuss-Catalan number of order three $C^{(3)}_n$ represents the number of all lattice paths in the plane from the point $(0,0)$ to the point $(2n,n)$, using steps $(1,0)$ and $(0,1)$, that do not rise above the line $y=\frac{x}{2}$. We present a new alternating convolution formula for the numbers $C(2n,k)$. By using a new class of binomial sums that we call $M$ sums, we prove that this sum is divisible by $C^{(3)}_n$ and by the central binomial coefficient $\binom{2n}{n}$. We do this by examining the numbers $T(n,j)=\frac{1}{2n+1}\binom{2n+j}{j}\binom{2n+1}{n+j+1}$, for which we present a new combinatorial interpretation, connecting them to the generalized Schröder numbers of order two.

Solutions for $k$-generalized Fibonacci numbers using Fuss-Catalan numbers
We present new expressions for the $k$-generalized Fibonacci numbers, say $F_k(n)$. They satisfy the recurrence $F_k(n) = F_k(n-1) +\dots+F_k(n-k)$. Explicit expressions for the roots of the auxiliary (or characteristic) polynomial are presented, using Fuss-Catalan numbers. Properties of the roots are enumerated. We quantify the accuracy of asymptotic approximations for $F_k(n)$ for $n\gg1$. Our results subsume and extend some results published by previous authors. We also present a basis (or `fundamental solutions') to solve the above recurrence for arbitrary initial conditions. We comment on the use of generating functions and multinomial sums for the $k$-generalized Fibonacci numbers and related sequences. We note that the resulting multinomial sums are Dickson polynomials of the second kind in several variables. We also present what may be a new identity for companion matrices.
Rapid mixing of the flip chain over non-crossing spanning trees
We show that the flip chain for non-crossing spanning trees of $n+1$ points in convex position mixes in time $O(n^8\log n)$. We use connections between Fuss-Catalan structures to construct a comparison argument with a chain similar to Wilson's lattice path chain (Wilson 2004).

Labeling regions in deformations of graphical arrangements
Published • View PublicationBIB
Combining Carver's variant of the Farkas' lemma with the Flow Decomposition Theorem we show that the regions of any deformation of a graphical arrangement may be bijectively labeled with a set of weighted digraphs containing directed cycles of negative weight only. Bounded regions correspond to strongly connected digraphs. The study of the resulting labelings allows us to add the omitted details in Stanley's proof on the injectivity of the Pak-Stanley labeling of the regions of the extended Shi arrangement, to generalize the ceiling diagrams in the deleted Shi and Ish arrangements studied by Armstrong and Rhoades and to introduce a new labeling of the regions in the Fuss-Catalan arrangement. We also point out that Athanasiadis-Linusson labelings may be used to directly count regions in a class of arrangements properly containing the extended Shi arrangement and the Fuss-Catalan arrangement.

Fuss-Catalan Triangles
For each $p>0$ we define by recurrence a triangle $T^p(n,k)$ whose rows sum to the Fuss-Catalan numbers $ \frac{1}{p n+1}\binom{pn+1}{n}$, generalizing the known Catalan triangle corresponding to the case $p=2$. (In fact, $T^p(n,k)$ has an explicit formula counting simple lattice paths). Moreover, for some small values of $p$, the signed sums turn out to be known sequences. \end{abstract}
Catalan-Spitzer permutations
We study two classes of permutations intimately related to the visual proof of Spitzer's lemma and Huq's generalization of the Chung-Feller theorem. Both classes of permutations are counted by the Fuss-Catalan numbers. The study of one class leads to a generalization of results of Flajolet from continued fractions to continuants. The study of the other class leads to the discovery of a restricted variant of the Foata--Strehl group action.
Cellular diagonals of permutahedra
We provide a systematic enumerative and combinatorial study of geometric cellular diagonals on the permutahedra. In the first part of the paper, we study the combinatorics of certain hyperplane arrangements obtained as the union of $\ell$ generically translated copies of the classical braid arrangement. Based on Zaslavsky's theory, we derive enumerative results on the faces of these arrangements involving combinatorial objects named partition forests and rainbow forests. This yields in particular nice formulas for the number of regions and bounded regions in terms of exponentials of generating functions of Fuss-Catalan numbers. By duality, the specialization of these results to the case $\ell = 2$ gives the enumeration of any geometric diagonal of the permutahedron. In the second part of the paper, we study diagonals which respect the operadic structure on the family of permutahedra. We show that there are exactly two such diagonals, which are moreover isomorphic. We describe their facets by a simple rule on paths in partition trees, and their vertices as pattern-avoiding pairs of permutations. We show that one of these diagonals is a topological enhancement of the Sanbeblidze-Umble diagonal, and unravel a natural lattice structure on their sets of facets. In the third part of the paper, we use the preceding results to show that there are precisely two isomorphic topological cellular operadic structures on the families of operahedra and multiplihedra, and exactly two infinity-isomorphic geometric universal tensor products of homotopy operads and A-infinity morphisms.
Catalan numbers, parking functions, permutahedra and noncommutative Hilbert schemes

We find an explicit $S_n$-equivariant bijection between the integral points in a certain zonotope in $\mathbb{R}^n$, combinatorially equivalent to the permutahedron, and the set of $m$-parking functions of length $n$. This bijection restricts to a bijection between the regular $S_n$-orbits and $(m,n)$-Dyck paths, the number of which is given by the Fuss-Catalan number $A_{n}(m,1)$. Our motivation came from studying tilting bundles on noncommutative Hilbert schemes. As a side result we use these tilting bundles to construct a semi-orthogonal decomposition of the derived category of noncommutative Hilbert schemes.
Refinements of the braid arrangement and two parameter Fuss-Catalan numbers

A hyperplane arrangement in $\mathbb{R}^n$ is a finite collection of affine hyperplanes. Counting regions of hyperplane arrangements is an active research direction in enumerative combinatorics. In this paper, we consider the arrangement $\mathcal{A}_n^{(m)}$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ given by $\{x_i=0 \mid i \in [n]\} \cup \{x_i=a^kx_j \mid k \in [-m,m], 1\leq i<j \leq n\}$ for some fixed $a>1$. It turns out that this family of arrangements is closely related to the well-studied extended Catalan arrangement of type $A$. We prove that the number of regions of $\mathcal{A}_n^{(m)}$ is a certain generalization of Catalan numbers called two parameter Fuss-Catalan numbers. We then exhibit a bijection between these regions and certain decorated Dyck paths. We also compute the characteristic polynomial and give a combinatorial interpretation for its coefficients. Most of our results also generalize to sub-arrangements of $\mathcal{A}_n^{(m)}$ by relating them to deformations of the braid arrangement.

Hypergraph Fuss-Catalan Numbers
The Catalan numbers $C_n$ are an extremely well-studied sequence of numbers that appear as the answer to many combinatorial problems. Two generalizations of these numbers that have been studied are the Fuss-Catalan numbers and the Hypergraph Catalan numbers. In this paper, we study the combination of these, the Hypergraph Fuss-Catalan numbers. We provide some combinatorial interpretations of these numbers, as well as describe their generating function.
