Pattern-avoidance and Fuss-Catalan numbers
Published in Journal of Integer Sequences, Vol. 26 (2023), Article 23.4.2 • Search Publication
We study a subset of permutations, where entries are restricted to having the same remainder as the index, modulo some integer $k \geq 2$. We show that when also imposing the classical 132- or 213-avoidance restriction on the permutations, we recover the Fuss--Catalan numbers and some special cases of the Raney numbers. Surprisingly, an analogous statement also holds when we impose the mod $k$ restriction on a Catalan family of subexcedant functions. Finally, we completely enumerate all combinations of mod-$k$-alternating permutations, avoiding two patterns of length 3. This is analogous to the systematic study by Simion and Schmidt, of permutations avoiding two patterns of length 3.

Raney numbers, threshold sequences and Motzkin-like paths
Published • View PublicationBIB
We provide new interpretations for a subset of Raney numbers, involving threshold sequences and Motzkin-like paths with long up and down steps. Given three integers n, k, l such that n >= 1, k >= 2 and 0 <= l <= k-2, a (k,l)-threshold sequence of length n is any strictly increasing sequence S=(s_1 s_2 ... s_n) of integers such that ki <= s_i <= kn+l. These sequences are in bijection with ordered (l+1)-tuples of k-ary trees. We prove this result and identify the Raney numbers that count the (k,l)-threshold sequences. As a consequence, when k=2 and k=3, we deduce combinatorial identities involving Catalan numbers and powers of 2, and respectively Fuss-Catalan and Raney numbers. Finally, we show how to represent threshold sequences as Motzkin-like paths with long up and down steps, and deduce that these paths are enumerated by the same Raney numbers.

Injectively $k$-colored rooted forests
Published • View PublicationBIB
We enumerate injectively $k$-colored rooted forests with a given number of vertices of each color and a given sequence of root colors. We obtain from this result some new multi-parameter distributions of Fuss-Catalan numbers. As an additional application we enumerate triangulations of regular convex polygons according to their proper 3-coloring type.
Colored Motzkin Paths of Higher Order
Motzkin paths of order-$\ell$ are a generalization of Motzkin paths that use steps $U=(1,1)$, $L=(1,0)$, and $D_i=(1,-i)$ for every positive integer $i \leq \ell$. We further generalize order-$\ell$ Motzkin paths by allowing for various coloring schemes on the edges of our paths. These $(\vecα,\vecβ)$-colored Motzkin paths may be enumerated via proper Riordan arrays, mimicking the techniques of Aigner in his treatment of Catalan-like numbers. After an investigation of their associated Riordan arrays, we develop bijections between $(\vecα,\vecβ)$-colored Motzkin paths and a variety of well-studied combinatorial objects. Specific coloring schemes $(\vecα,\vecβ)$ allow us to place $(\vecα,\vecβ)$-colored Motzkin paths in bijection with different subclasses of generalized $k$-Dyck paths, including $k$-Dyck paths that remain weakly above horizontal lines $y=-a$, $k$-Dyck paths whose peaks all have the same height modulo-$k$, and Fuss-Catalan generalizations of Fine paths. A general bijection is also developed between $(\vecα,\vecβ)$-colored Motzkin paths and certain subclasses of $k$-ary trees.

Catalan triangles and tied arc diagrams
The Catalan triangle, as well as a Fuss-Catalan triangle, enter a problem of counting particular tied arc diagrams. This setting allows us to prove some combinatorial properties of these triangles.

Three Fuss-Catalan posets in interaction and their associative algebras
Published in Combinatorial Theory, 2, Issue 1, 2022 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce $δ$-cliffs, a generalization of permutations and increasing trees depending on a range map $δ$. We define a first lattice structure on these objects and we establish general results about its subposets. Among them, we describe sufficient conditions to have EL-shellable posets, lattices with algorithms to compute the meet and the join of two elements, and lattices constructible by interval doubling. Some of these subposets admit natural geometric realizations. Then, we introduce three families of subposets which, for some maps $δ$, have underlying sets enumerated by the Fuss-Catalan numbers. Among these, one is a generalization of Stanley lattices and another one is a generalization of Tamari lattices. These three families of posets fit into a chain for the order extension relation and they share some properties. Finally, in the same way as the product of the Malvenuto-Reutenauer algebra forms intervals of the right weak Bruhat order of permutations, we construct algebras whose products form intervals of the lattices of $δ$-cliff. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions on $δ$ to have associative, finitely presented, or free algebras. We end this work by using the previous Fuss-Catalan posets to define quotients of our algebras of $δ$-cliffs. In particular, one is a generalization of the Loday-Ronco algebra.

Generalized Path Pairs and Fuss-Catalan Triangles
Path pairs are a modification of parallelogram polyominoes that provide yet another combinatorial interpretation of the Catalan numbers. More generally, the number of path pairs of length $n$ and distance $δ$ corresponds to the $(n-1,δ-1)$ entry of Shapiro's so-called Catalan triangle. In this paper, we widen the notion of path pairs $(γ_1,γ_2)$ to the situation where $γ_1$ and $γ_2$ may have different lengths, and then enforce divisibility conditions on runs of vertical steps in $γ_2$. This creates a two-parameter family of integer triangles that generalize the Catalan triangle and qualify as proper Riordan arrays for many choices of parameters. In particular, we use generalized path pairs to provide a new combinatorial interpretation for all entries in every proper Riordan array $\mathcal{R}(d(t),h(t))$ of the form $d(t) = C_k(t)^i$, $h(t) = t \kern+1pt C_k(t)^k$, where $1 \leq i \leq k$ and $C_k(t)$ is the generating function for some sequence of Fuss-Catalan numbers (some $k \geq 2$). Closed formulas are then provided for the number of generalized path pairs across an even broader range of parameters, as well as for the number of weak path pairs with a fixed number of non-initial intersections.

Modular Fuss-Catalan numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
The modular Catalan numbers $C_{k,n}$, introduced by Hein and Huang in 2016 count equivalence classes of parenthesizations of $x_0 * x_1 * \dots *x_n$ where $*$ is a binary $k$-associative operation and $k$ is a positive integer. The classical notion of associativity is just 1-associativity, in which case $C_{1,n} = 1$ and the size of the unique class is given by the Catalan number $C_n$. In this paper we introduce modular Fuss-Catalan numbers $C_{k,n}^{m}$ which count equivalence classes of parenthesizations of $x_0 * x_1 * \dots *x_n$ where $*$ is an $m$-ary $k$-associative operation for $m \geq 2$. Our main results are a closed formula for $C_{k,n}^{m}$ and a characterisation of $k$-associativity.

Three interacting families of Fuss-Catalan posets
Published in Formal Power Series and Algebraic Combinatorics, Séminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire, 84B.22, 2020 • Search Publication
Three families of posets depending on a nonnegative integer parameter $m$ are introduced. The underlying sets of these posets are enumerated by the $m$-Fuss Catalan numbers. Among these, one is a generalization of Stanley lattices and another one is a generalization of Tamari lattices. The three families of posets are related: they fit into a chain for the order extension relation and they share some properties. Two associative algebras are constructed as quotients of generalizations of the Malvenuto-Reutenauer algebra. Their products describe intervals of our analogues of Stanley lattices and Tamari lattices. In particular, one is a generalization of the Loday-Ronco algebra.

Positive Fuss-Catalan numbers and Simple-minded systems in negative Calabi-Yau categories
Published • View PublicationBIB
We establish a bijection between $d$-simple-minded systems ($d$-SMSs) of $(-d)$-Calabi-Yau cluster category ${\cal C_{-d}}(H)$ and silting objects of ${\cal D^{\rm b}}(H)$ contained in $\cal D^{\le 0}\cap \cal D^{\ge 1-d}$ for hereditary algebra $H$ of Dynkin type and $d\ge 1$. We show that the number of $d$-SMSs in ${\cal C_{-d}}(H)$ is the positive Fuss-Catalan number $C_{d}^{+}(W)$ of the corresponding Weyl group $W$, by applying this bijection and Buan-Reiten-Thomas' and Zhu's results on Fomin-Reading's generalized cluster complexes. Our results are based on a refined version of silting-$t$-structure correspondence.

Characterizations of the Borel triangle and Borel polynomials
We use Riordan array theory to give characterizations of the Borel triangle and its associated polynomial sequence. We show that the Borel polynomials are the moment sequence for a family of orthogonal polynomials whose coefficient array is a Riordan array. The role of the Catalan matrix in defining the Borel triangle is examined. We generalize the Borel triangle to a family of two parameter triangles. Generating functions are expressed as Jacobi continued fractions, as well as the zeros of appropriate quadratic expressions. The Borel triangle is exhibited as a Hadamard product of matrices. We investigate the reversions of the triangles studied. We introduce the notion of Fuss-Borel triangles and Fuss-Catalan triangles. We end with some remarks on the Catalan triangle.

A Fuss-Catalan variation of the caracol flow polytope
Recently, a combinatorial interpretation of Baldoni and Vergne's generalized Lidskii formula for the volume of a flow polytope was developed by Benedetti et al.. This converts the problem of computing Kostant partition functions into a problem of enumerating a set of objects called unified diagrams. We devise an enhanced version of this combinatorial model to compute the volumes of flow polytopes defined on a family of graphs called the k-caracol graphs, resulting in the first application of the model to non-planar graphs. At k=1 and k=n-1, we recover results for the classical caracol graph and the Pitman--Stanley graph. Furthermore, we introduce the notion of in-degree gravity diagrams for flow polytopes, which are equinumerous with (out-degree) gravity diagrams considered by Benedetti et al.. We show that for the k-caracol flow polytopes, these two kinds of gravity diagrams satisfy a natural combinatorial correspondence, which raises an intriguing question on the relationship in the geometry of two related polytopes.

Fibonacci, Motzkin, Schroder, Fuss-Catalan and other Combinatorial Structures: Universal and Embedded Bijections
A combinatorial structure, $\mathcal{F}$, with counting sequence $\{a_n\}_{n\ge 0}$ and ordinary generating function $G_\mathcal{F}=\sum_{n\ge0} a_n x^n$, is positive algebraic if $G_\mathcal{F}$ satisfies a polynomial equation $G_\mathcal{F}=\sum_{k=0}^N p_k(x)\,G_\mathcal{F}^k $ and $p_k(x)$ is a polynomial in $x$ with non-negative integer coefficients. We show that every such family is associated with a normed $\mathbf{n}$-magma. An $\mathbf{n}$-magma with $\mathbf{n}=(n_1,\dots, n_k)$ is a pair $\mathcal{M}$ and $\mathcal{F}$ where $\mathcal{M}$ is a set of combinatorial structures and $\mathcal{F}$ is a tuple of $n_i$-ary maps $f_i\,:\,\mathcal{M}^{n_i}\to \mathcal{M}$. A norm is a super-additive size map $||\cdot||\,:\, \mathcal{M}\to \mathbb{N} $. If the normed $\mathbf{n}$-magma is free then we show there exists a recursive, norm preserving, universal bijection between all positive algebraic families $\mathcal{F}_i$ with the same counting sequence. A free $\mathbf{n}$-magma is defined using a universal mapping principle. We state a theorem which provides a combinatorial method of proving if a particular $\mathbf{n}$-magma is free. We illustrate this by defining several $\mathbf{n}$-magmas: eleven $(1,1)$-magmas (the Fibonacci families), seventeen $(1,2)$-magmas (nine Motzkin and eight Schröder families) and seven $(3)$-magmas (the Fuss-Catalan families). We prove they are all free and hence obtain a universal bijection for each $\mathbf{n}$. We also show how the $\mathbf{n}$-magma structure manifests as an embedded bijection.

Lucas atoms
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given two variables $s$ and $t$, the associated sequence of Lucas polynomials is defined inductively by $\{0\}=0$, $\{1\}=1$, and $\{n\}=s\{n-1\}+t\{n-2\}$ for $n\ge2$. An integer (e.g., a Catalan number) defined by an expression of the form $\prod_i n_i/\prod_j k_j$ has a Lucas analogue obtained by replacing each factor with the corresponding Lucas polynomial. There has been interest in deciding when such expressions, which are a priori only rational functions, are actually polynomials in $s,t$. The approaches so far have been combinatorial. We introduce a powerful algebraic method for answering this question by factoring $\{n\}=\prod_{d|n} P_d(s,t)$, where we call the polynomials $P_d(s,t)$ Lucas atoms. This permits us to show that the Lucas analogues of the Fuss-Catalan and Fuss-Narayana numbers for all irreducible Coxeter groups are polynomials in $s,t$. Using gamma expansions, a technique which has recently become popular in combinatorics and geometry, one can show that the Lucas atoms have a close relationship with cyclotomic polynomials $Φ_d(q)$. Certain results about the $Φ_d(q)$ can then be lifted to Lucas atoms. In particular, one can prove analogues of theorems of Gauss and Lucas, deduce reduction formulas, and evaluate the $P_d(s,t)$ at various specific values of the variables.
Free self-decomposability and unimodality of the Fuss-Catalan distributions

We study properties of the Fuss-Catalan distributions $μ(p,r)$, $p\geq1$, $0<r\leq p$: free infinite divisibility, free self-decomposability, free regularity and unimodality. We show that the Fuss-Catalan distribution $μ(p,r)$ is freely self-decomposable if and only if $1 \leq p=r \leq 2$.
A simplicial complex spliting associativity
We introduce a simplicial object $(\{ \Dy^m\}_{m\geq 0}, {\mathbb F}_i, {\mathbb S}_j)$ in the category of non-symmetric algebraic operads, satisfying that $\Dy^0$ is the operad of associative algebras and $\Dy^1$ is J.-L. Loday\rq s operad of dendriform algebras. The dimensions of the operad $\Dy^m$ are given by the Fuss-Catalan numbers. Given a family of partially ordered sets ${\bold P}=\{P_n\}_{n\geq 1}$ we show that, under certain conditions, the vector space spanned by the set of $m$-simpleces of ${\bold P}$ is a $\Dy^m$ algebra. This construction, applied to certain combinatorial Hopf algebras, whose associative product comes from a dendriform structure, provides examples of $\Dy^m$ algebras.
Signature Catalan Combinatorics
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Catalan numbers constitute one of the most important sequences in combinatorics. Catalan objects have been generalized in various directions, including the classical Fuss-Catalan objects and the rational Catalan generalization of Armstrong-Rhoades-Williams. We propose a wider generalization of these families indexed by a composition $s$ which is motivated by the combinatorics of planar rooted trees; when $s=(2,...,2)$ and $s=(k+1,...,k+1)$ we recover the classical Catalan and Fuss-Catalan combinatorics, respectively. Furthermore, to each pair $(a,b)$ of relatively prime numbers we can associate a signature that recovers the combinatorics of rational Catalan objects. We present explicit bijections between the resulting $s$-Catalan objects, and a fundamental recurrence that generalizes the fundamental recurrence of the classical Catalan numbers. Our framework allows us to define signature generalizations of parking functions which coincide with the generalized parking functions studied by Pitman-Stanley and Yan, as well as generalizations of permutations which coincide with the notion of Stirling multipermutations introduced by Gessel-Stanley. Some of our constructions differ from the ones of Armstrong-Rhoades-Williams, however as a byproduct of our extension, we obtain the additional notions of rational permutations and rational trees.

On Powers of the Catalan Number Sequence
Published in Discrete Mathematics (2018) • View PublicationBIB
The Catalan number sequence is one of the most famous number sequences in combinatorics and is well studied in the literature. In this paper we further investigate its fundamental properties related to the moment problem and prove for the first time that it is an infinitely divisible Stieltjes moment sequence in the sense of S.-G. Tyan. Besides, any positive real power of the sequence is still a Stieltjes determinate sequence. Some more cases including (a) the central binomial coefficient sequence (related to the Catalan sequence), (b) a double factorial number sequence and (c) the generalized Catalan (or Fuss-Catalan) sequence are also investigated. Finally, we pose two conjectures including the determinacy equivalence between powers of nonnegative random variables and powers of their moment sequences, which is supported by some existing results.
Bounce statistics for rational lattice paths
Given two relatively prime positive integers $α$ and $β$, we consider simple lattice paths (with unit East and unit North steps) from $(0,0)$ to $(αk,βk)$, and enumerate them by their left and right bounces with respect to the line $y=\fracβα x$. We give the corresponding multivariate generating functions for all such paths as well as for subclasses of paths that start and end with a prescribed step. For illustration purposes, we discuss the case $β=1$ and express some of our functions in terms of the Fuss-Catalan generating function $c_α(x)$.

Set-Valued Tableaux & Generalized Catalan Numbers
Standard set-valued Young tableaux are a generalization of standard Young tableaux in which cells may contain more than one integer, with the added conditions that every integer at position $(i,j)$ must be smaller than every integer at positions $(i,j+1)$ and $(i+1,j)$. This paper explores the combinatorics of standard set-valued Young tableaux with two-rows, and how those tableaux may be used to provide new combinatorial interpretations of generalized Catalan numbers. New combinatorial interpretations are provided for the two-parameter Fuss-Catalan numbers (Raney numbers), the rational Catalan numbers, and the solution to the so-called "generalized tennis ball problem". Methodologies are then introduced for the enumeration of standard set-valued Young tableaux, prompting explicit formulas for the general two-row case. The paper closes by drawing a bijection between arbitrary classes of two-row standard set-valued Young tableaux and collections of two-dimensional lattice paths that lie weakly below a unique maximal path.
