Weighted bond posets and a new chromatic symmetric function
The classical bond lattice of a graph was used in a formula of Whitney to compute the chromatic polynomial. In this paper, we use weighted versions of the bond lattice, to introduce and study a new polynomial and a new symmetric function invariant of a graph. Examples of the new polynomial invariant include the classical Narayana polynomials (for the path graph), the tree-Eulerian polynomials (for the complete graph), and the binomial-Eulerian polynomials (for the star graph). These examples suggest an interesting connection to $h$-polynomials of general graph-associahedra. We prove that for any chordal graph, our polynomial graph invariant is $γ$-positive.
Multiweighted bond posets yield a symmetric function graph invariant that is an analog of the chromatic polynomial. The highest degree homogeneous component of this symmetric function is of particular interest. The parking function symmetric function introduced by Haiman arises as an example, as do symmetric functions studied by the first author in connection with multibracketed Lie algebras and with colored exterior algebras. The $γ$-positivity result mentioned above is a specialization of an $e$-positivity result for the highest degree homogeneous component, which we prove for any chordal graph using the theory of lexicographic shellability. We conjecture that this symmetric function is Schur-log-concave, which specializes to Huh's log-concavity theorem for the chromatic polynomial.
Permutation Flows I: Triangulations of Flow Polytopes (Research Announcement)
We introduce a new broadly unifying family of combinatorial objects, which we call permutation flows, associated to an acyclic directed graph $G$ together with a framing $F$. This new family is combinatorially rich and contains as special cases various families of combinatorial objects that are frequently studied in the literature, as is the case of permutations, circular permutations, multipermutations, Stirling permutations, Catalan objects and their generalizations. When permutation flows are decorated with compatible shuffles, they also include the combinatorics of parking functions and their generalizations.
This model is geometrically rich. We show that permutation flow shuffles define a family of unimodular triangulations of the flow polytope $F_G(a)$ on $G$ with an integer balanced netflow vector a where only the last entry is negative. As an application we provide a new proof of the Lidskii volume formula of Baldoni and Vergne for this family of polytopes and a reformulation of the same formula where every term is explained by the nature of the combinatorial objects involved. Permutation flow triangulations extend the Danilov, Karzanov, and Koshevoy triangulations that were defined for the case where a=e_0-e_n. We provide a formula for the h^*-polynomial of the flow polytope as the descent enumerating polynomial of permutation flows.
The model comes with an order structure induced by intuitive operators on permutation flows which we call the weak order. This order includes as special cases the weak order on permutations, the Tamari lattice, order ideals in Young's lattice, and their generalizations, among others. It was conjectured in 2020 by the three authors, together with Benedetti, Harris, and Morales, that this poset is in general a lattice. This conjecture has been recently established with independent proofs by Bell and Ceballos, and by Berggren and Serhiyenko.
Whitney Twins, Whitney Duals, and Operadic Partition Posets
We say that a pair of nonnegative integer sequences $(\{a_k\}_{k\geq 0},\{b_k\}_{k\geq 0})$ is Whitney-realizable if there exists a poset $P$ for which (the absolute values) of the Whitney numbers of the first and second kind are given by the numbers $a_k$ and $b_k$ respectively. The pair is said to be Whitney-dualizable if, in addition, there exists another poset $Q$ for which their Whitney numbers of the first and second kind are instead given by $b_k$ and $a_k$ respectively. In this case, we say that $P$ and $Q$ are Whitney duals. We use results on Whitney duality, recently developed by the first two authors, to exhibit a family of sequences which allows for multiple realizations and Whitney-dual realizations. More precisely, we study edge labelings for the families of posets of pointed partitions $Π_n^{\bullet}$ and weighted partitions $Π_n^{w}$ which are associated to the operads $\mathcal{P}erm$ and $\mathcal{C}om^2$ respectively. The first author and Wachs proved that these two families of posets share the same pair of Whitney numbers. We find EW-labelings for $Π_n^{\bullet}$ and $Π_n^{w}$ and use them to show that they also share multiple nonisomorphic Whitney dual posets.
In addition to EW-labelings, we also find two new EL-labelings for $Π_n^\bullet$ answering a question of Chapoton and Vallette. Using these EL-labelings of $Π_n^\bullet$, and an EL-labeling of $Π_n^w$ introduced by the first author and Wachs, we give combinatorial descriptions of bases for the operads $\mathcal{P}re\mathcal{L}ie, \mathcal{P}erm,$ and $\mathcal{C}om^2$. We also show that the bases for $\mathcal{P}erm$ and $\mathcal{C}om^2$ are PBW bases.
Realizing the $s$-permutahedron via flow polytopes
Ceballos and Pons introduced the $s$-weak order on $s$-decreasing trees, for any weak composition $s$. They proved that it has a lattice structure and further conjectured that it can be realized as the $1$-skeleton of a polyhedral subdivision of a polytope. We answer their conjecture in the case where $s$ is a strict composition by providing three geometric realizations of the $s$-permutahedron. The first one is the dual graph of a triangulation of a flow polytope of high dimension. The second one, obtained using the Cayley trick, is the dual graph of a fine mixed subdivision of a sum of hypercubes that has the conjectured dimension. The third one, obtained using tropical geometry, is the $1$-skeleton of a polyhedral complex for which we can provide explicit coordinates of the vertices and whose support is a permutahedron as conjectured.

We construct three new combinatorial Hopf algebras based on the Loday-Ronco operations on planar binary trees. The first and second algebras are defined on planar trees and labeled planar trees extending the Loday-Ronco and Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebras respectively. We show that the latter is bidendriform which implies that is also free, cofree, and self-dual. The third algebra involves a new visualization of parking functions as decorated binary trees; it is also bidendriform, free, cofree, and self-dual, and therefore abstractly isomorphic to the algebra PQSym of Novelli and Thibon.
We define partial orders on the objects indexing each of these three Hopf algebras, one of which, when restricting to (m+1)-ary trees, coarsens the m-Tamari order of Bergeron and Préville-Ratelle. We show that multiplication of dual fundamental basis elements are given by intervals in each of these orders.
Finally, we use an axiomatized version of the techniques of Aguiar and Sottile on the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra to define a monomial basis on each of our Hopf algebras, and to show that comultiplication is cofree on the monomial elements. This in particular, implies the cofreeness of the Hopf algebra on planar trees. We also find explicit positive formulas for the multiplication on monomial basis and a cancellation-free and grouping-free formula for the antipode of monomial elements.
Column convex matrices, $G$-cyclic orders, and flow polytopes
We study polytopes defined by inequalities of the form $\sum_{i\in I} z_{i}\leq 1$ for $I\subseteq [d]$ and nonnegative $z_i$ where the inequalities can be reordered into a matrix inequality involving a column-convex $\{0,1\}$-matrix. These generalize polytopes studied by Stanley, and the consecutive coordinate polytopes of Ayyer, Josuat-Vergès, and Ramassamy. We prove an integral equivalence between these polytopes and flow polytopes of directed acyclic graphs $G$ with a Hamiltonian path, which we call spinal graphs. We show that the volume of these flow polytopes is the number of extensions of a set of partial cyclic orders defined by the graph $G$. As a special case we recover results on volumes of consecutive coordinate polytopes.
We study the combinatorics of $k$-Euler numbers, which are generalizations of the classical Euler numbers, and which arise as volumes of flow polytopes of a special family of spinal graphs. We show that their refinements, Ramassamy's $k$-Entringer numbers, can be realized as values of a Kostant partition function, satisfy a family of generalized boustrophedon recurrences, and are log concave along root directions.
Finally, via our main integral equivalence and the known formula for the $h^*$-polynomial of consecutive coordinate polytopes, we give a combinatorial formula for the $h^*$-polynomial of flow polytopes of non-nested spinal graphs. For spinal graphs in general, we present a conjecture on upper and lower bounds for their $h^*$-polynomial.

We present a unifying framework in which both the $ν$-Tamari lattice, introduced by Préville-Ratelle and Viennot, and principal order ideals in Young's lattice indexed by lattice paths $ν$, are realized as the dual graphs of two combinatorially striking triangulations of a family of flow polytopes which we call the $ν$-caracol flow polytopes. The first triangulation gives a new geometric realization of the $ν$-Tamari complex introduced by Ceballos, Padrol and Sarmiento. We use the second triangulation to show that the $h^*$-vector of the $ν$-caracol flow polytope is given by the $ν$-Narayana numbers, extending a result of Mészáros when $ν$ is a staircase lattice path. Our work generalizes and unifies results on the dual structure of two subdivisions of a polytope studied by Pitman and Stanley.
Signature Catalan Combinatorics

The Catalan numbers constitute one of the most important sequences in combinatorics. Catalan objects have been generalized in various directions, including the classical Fuss-Catalan objects and the rational Catalan generalization of Armstrong-Rhoades-Williams. We propose a wider generalization of these families indexed by a composition $s$ which is motivated by the combinatorics of planar rooted trees; when $s=(2,...,2)$ and $s=(k+1,...,k+1)$ we recover the classical Catalan and Fuss-Catalan combinatorics, respectively. Furthermore, to each pair $(a,b)$ of relatively prime numbers we can associate a signature that recovers the combinatorics of rational Catalan objects. We present explicit bijections between the resulting $s$-Catalan objects, and a fundamental recurrence that generalizes the fundamental recurrence of the classical Catalan numbers. Our framework allows us to define signature generalizations of parking functions which coincide with the generalized parking functions studied by Pitman-Stanley and Yan, as well as generalizations of permutations which coincide with the notion of Stirling multipermutations introduced by Gessel-Stanley. Some of our constructions differ from the ones of Armstrong-Rhoades-Williams, however as a byproduct of our extension, we obtain the additional notions of rational permutations and rational trees.
The Whitney Duals of a Graded Poset
We introduce the notion of a \emph{Whitney dual} of a graded poset. Two posets are Whitney duals to each other if (the absolute value of) their Whitney numbers of the first and second kind are interchanged between the two posets. We define new types of edge and chain-edge labelings which we call \emph{Whitney labelings}. We prove that every graded poset with a Whitney labeling has a Whitney dual. Moreover, we show how to explicitly construct a Whitney dual using a technique involving quotient posets.
As applications of our main theorem, we show that geometric lattices, the lattice of noncrossing partitions, the poset of weighted partitions studied by González D'León-Wachs, and most of the R$^*$S-labelable posets studied by Simion-Stanley all have Whitney duals. Our technique gives a combinatorial description of a Whitney dual of the noncrossing partition lattice in terms of a family of noncrossing Dyck paths. Our method also provides an explanation of the Whitney duality between the poset of weighted partitions and a poset of rooted forests studied by Reiner and Sagan. An integral part of this explanation is a new chain-edge labeling for the poset of weighted partitions which we show is a Whitney labeling.
Finally, we show that a graded poset with a Whitney labeling admits a local action of the $0$-Hecke algebra of type $A$ on its set of maximal chains. The characteristic of the associated representation is Ehrenborg's flag quasisymmetric function. The existence of this action implies, using a result of McNamara, that when the maximal intervals of the constructed Whitney duals are bowtie-free, they are also snellable. In the case where these maximal intervals are lattices, they are supersolvable.

We introduce new families of combinatorial objects whose enumeration computes volumes of flow polytopes. These objects provide an interpretation, based on parking functions, of Baldoni and Vergne's generalization of a volume formula originally due to Lidskii. We recover known flow polytope volume formulas and prove new volume formulas for flow polytopes that were seemingly unapproachable. A highlight of our model is an elegant formula for the flow polytope of a graph we call the caracol graph.
As by-products of our work, we uncover a new triangle of numbers that interpolates between Catalan numbers and the number of parking functions, we prove the log-concavity of rows of this triangle along with other sequences derived from volume computations, and we introduce a new Ehrhart-like polynomial for flow polytope volume and conjecture product formulas for the polytopes we consider.
The colored symmetric and exterior algebras

We study colored generalizations of the symmetric algebra and its Koszul dual, the exterior algebra. The symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ acts on the multilinear components of these algebras. While $\mathfrak{S}_n$ acts trivially on the multilinear components of the colored symmetric algebra, we use poset topology techniques to understand the representation on its Koszul dual. We introduce an $\mathfrak{S}_n$-poset of weighted subsets that we call the weighted boolean algebra and we prove that the multilinear components of the colored exterior algebra are $\mathfrak{S}_n$-isomorphic to the top cohomology modules of its maximal intervals. We use a technique of Sundaram to compute group representations on Cohen-macaulay posets to give a generating formula for the Frobenius series of the colored exterior algebra. We exploit that formula to find an explicit expression for the expansion of the corresponding representations in terms of irreducible $\mathfrak{S}_n$-representations. We show that the two colored Koszul dual algebras are Koszul in the sense of Priddy.
A family of symmetric functions associated with Stirling permutations
We present exponential generating function analogues to two classical identities involving the ordinary generating function of the complete homogeneous symmetric functions. After a suitable specialization the new identities reduce to identities involving the first and second order Eulerian polynomials. The study of these identities led us to consider a family of symmetric functions associated with a class of permutations introduced by Gessel and Stanley, known in the literature as Stirling permutations. In particular, we define certain type statistics on Stirling permutations that refine the statistics of descents, ascents and plateaux and we show that their refined versions are equidistributed, generalizing a result of Bóna. The definition of this family of symmetric functions extends to the generality of $r$-Stirling permutations. We discuss some occurrences of these symmetric functions in the cases of $r=1$ and $r=2$.

We consider the generating polynomial of the number of rooted trees on the set $\{1,2,\dots,n\}$ counted by the number of descending edges (a parent with a greater label than a child). This polynomial is an extension of the descent generating polynomial of the set of permutations of a totally ordered $n$-set, known as the Eulerian polynomial. We show how this extension shares some of the properties of the classical one. B. Drake proved that this polynomial factors completely over the integers. From his product formula it can be concluded that this polynomial has positive coefficients in the $γ$-basis and we show that a formula for these coefficients can also be derived. We discuss various combinatorial interpretations of these positive coefficients in terms of leaf-labeled binary trees and in terms of the Stirling permutations introduced by Gessel and Stanley. These interpretations are derived from previous results of the author and Wachs related to the poset of weighted partitions and the free multibracketed Lie algebra.

It is a classical result that the multilinear component of the free Lie algebra is isomorphic (as a representation of the symmetric group) to the top (co)homology of the proper part of the poset of partitions $Π_n$ tensored with the sign representation. We generalize this result in order to study the multilinear component of the free Lie algebra with multiple compatible Lie brackets. We introduce a new poset of weighted partitions $Π_n^k$ that allows us to generalize the result. The new poset is a generalization of $Π_n$ and of the poset of weighted partitions $Π_n^w$ introduced by Dotsenko and Khoroshkin and studied by the author and Wachs for the case of two compatible brackets. We prove that the poset $Π_n^k$ with a top element added is EL-shellable and hence Cohen-Macaulay. This and other properties of $Π_n^k$ enable us to answer questions posed by Liu on free multibracketed Lie algebras. In particular, we obtain various dimension formulas and multicolored generalizations of the classical Lyndon and comb bases for the multilinear component of the free Lie algebra. We also obtain a plethystic formula for the Frobenius characteristic of the representation of the symmetric group on the multilinear component of the free multibracketed Lie algebra.

We consider the poset of weighted partitions $Π_n^w$, introduced by Dotsenko and Khoroshkin in their study of a certain pair of dual operads. The maximal intervals of $Π_n^w$ provide a generalization of the lattice $Π_n$ of partitions, which we show possesses many of the well-known properties of $Π_n$. In particular, we prove these intervals are EL-shellable, we show that the Möbius invariant of each maximal interval is given up to sign by the number of rooted trees on on node set $\{1,2,\dots,n\}$ having a fixed number of descents, we find combinatorial bases for homology and cohomology, and we give an explicit sign twisted $\mathfrak{S}_n$-module isomorphism from cohomology to the multilinear component of the free Lie algebra with two compatible brackets. We also show that the characteristic polynomial of $Π_n^w$ has a nice factorization analogous to that of $Π_n$.

A multivariate polynomial is stable if it is non-vanishing whenever all variables have positive imaginary parts. A matroid has the weak half-plane property (WHPP) if there exists a stable polynomial with support equal to the set of bases of the matroid. If the polynomial can be chosen with all of its nonzero coefficients equal to one then the matroid has the half-plane property (HPP). We describe a systematic method that allows us to reduce the WHPP to the HPP for large families of matroids. This method makes use of the Tutte group of a matroid. We prove that no projective geometry has the WHPP and that a binary matroid has the WHPP if and only if it is regular. We also prove that T_8 and R_9 fail to have the WHPP.
