Noncrossing Combinatorics, the Full Twist, and Decategorification of Knot Invariants
Much work in knot theory has consisted of categorifying, and thereby strengthening, knot invariants. We take the opposite approach: decategorification, more commonly called combinatorics. We introduce a technique that relates the dual braid group generators, the Hecke images of pure braids, and factorization problems in reflection groups to knot invariants. We prove that the $(a,z{=}0)$-HOMFLYPT polynomial can be computed as a solution to such a problem. This technique was motivated by Coxeter--Catalan combinatorics. For example, we give a new proof of EL-shellability of the noncrossing partition lattice using the image of the full twist in the Hecke algebra; in a surprising sort of combinatorial reciprocity, its inverse computes the homotopy type. Similarly, noncrossing partitions naturally arise from our construction applied to positive powers of the full twist, while cluster complexes come from the same construction applied to negative powers. In crystallographic type, we exploit the conjugacy of all Coxeter elements to give the first reflection subword models for rational noncrossing Catalan objects. Our reciprocity gives two models: one generalizing noncrossing partitions, and one generalizing clusters. Applying the same method produces two (rational) noncrossing parking models.
Mirror Variations on Catalan Multijections
A Catalan multijection is a way to partition a set of $\binom{2n}{n}$ objects into equivalence classes of size $n+1$, where each equivalence class has exactly one distinct Catalan object. Isaak and Langley investigated when two multijections produced the same partitions in an unpublished manuscript. We propose some new multijections for which we get different partitions from previously discovered multijections.
Permutation Flows I: Triangulations of Flow Polytopes (Research Announcement)
We introduce a new broadly unifying family of combinatorial objects, which we call permutation flows, associated to an acyclic directed graph $G$ together with a framing $F$. This new family is combinatorially rich and contains as special cases various families of combinatorial objects that are frequently studied in the literature, as is the case of permutations, circular permutations, multipermutations, Stirling permutations, Catalan objects and their generalizations. When permutation flows are decorated with compatible shuffles, they also include the combinatorics of parking functions and their generalizations.
This model is geometrically rich. We show that permutation flow shuffles define a family of unimodular triangulations of the flow polytope $F_G(a)$ on $G$ with an integer balanced netflow vector a where only the last entry is negative. As an application we provide a new proof of the Lidskii volume formula of Baldoni and Vergne for this family of polytopes and a reformulation of the same formula where every term is explained by the nature of the combinatorial objects involved. Permutation flow triangulations extend the Danilov, Karzanov, and Koshevoy triangulations that were defined for the case where a=e_0-e_n. We provide a formula for the h^*-polynomial of the flow polytope as the descent enumerating polynomial of permutation flows.
The model comes with an order structure induced by intuitive operators on permutation flows which we call the weak order. This order includes as special cases the weak order on permutations, the Tamari lattice, order ideals in Young's lattice, and their generalizations, among others. It was conjectured in 2020 by the three authors, together with Benedetti, Harris, and Morales, that this poset is in general a lattice. This conjecture has been recently established with independent proofs by Bell and Ceballos, and by Berggren and Serhiyenko.
Cyclic sieving on noncrossing (1,2)-configurations

Verifying a suspicion of Propp and Reiner concerning the cyclic sieving phenomenon (CSP), M. Thiel introduced a Catalan object called noncrossing $(1,2)$-configurations (denoted by $X_n$), which is a class of set partitions of $[n-1]$. More precisely, Thiel proved that, with a natural action of the cyclic group $C_{n-1}$ on $X_n$, the triple $\left(X_n,C_{n-1},\text{Cat}_n(q)\right)$ exhibits the CSP, where $\text{Cat}_n(q):=\frac{1}{[n+1]_q}\begin{bmatrix}
2n\\ n
\end{bmatrix}_q$ is MacMahon's $q$-Catalan number. Recently, in a study of the fermionic diagonal coinvariant ring $FDR_n$, J. Kim found a combinatorial basis for $FDR_n$ indexed by $X_n$. In this paper, we continue to study $X_n$ and obtain the following results:
(1) We define a statistic $cwt$ on $X_n$ whose generating function is $\text{Cat}_n(q)$, which answers a problem of Thiel.
(2) We show that $\text{Cat}_n(q)$ is equivalent to $$\sum_{\substack{k,x,y\\2k+x+y=n-1}}\begin{bmatrix}
n-1
2k,x,y
\end{bmatrix}_q\text{Cat}_k
(q)q^{k+\binom{x}{2}+\binom{y}{2}+\binom{n}{2}}$$
modulo $q^{n-1}-1$, which answers a problem of Kim. As mentioned by Kim, this result leads to a representation theoretic proof of the above cyclic sieving result of Thiel.
(3) We consider the dihedral sieving, a generalization of the CSP, which was recently introduced by Rao and Suk. Under a natural action of the dihedral group $I_2(n-1)$ (for even $n$), we prove a dihedral sieving result on $X_n$.
Combinatorics of the Permutahedra, Associahedra, and Friends
I present an overview of the research I have conducted for the past ten years in algebraic, bijective, enumerative, and geometric combinatorics. The two main objects I have studied are the permutahedron and the associahedron as well as the two partial orders they are related to: the weak order on permutations and the Tamari lattice. This document contains a general introduction (Chapters 1 and 2) on those objects which requires very little previous knowledge and should be accessible to non-specialist such as master students. Chapters 3 to 8 present the research I have conducted and its general context. You will find:
* a presentation of the current knowledge on Tamari interval and a precise description of the family of Tamari interval-posets which I have introduced along with the rise-contact involution to prove the symmetry of the rises and the contacts in Tamari intervals;
* my most recent results concerning q, t-enumeration of Catalan objects and Tamari intervals in relation with triangular partitions;
* the descriptions of the integer poset lattice and integer poset Hopf algebra and their relations to well known structures in algebraic combinatorics;
* the construction of the permutree lattice, the permutree Hopf algebra and permutreehedron;
* the construction of the s-weak order and s-permutahedron along with the s-Tamari lattice and s-associahedron.
Chapter 9 is dedicated to the experimental method in combinatorics research especially related to the SageMath software. Chapter 10 describes the outreach efforts I have participated in and some of my approach towards mathematical knowledge and inclusion.
Rational Catalan Numbers for Complex Reflection Groups
Assuming standard conjectures, we show that the canonical symmetrizing trace evaluated at powers of a Coxeter element produces rational Catalan numbers for irreducible spetsial complex reflection groups. This extends a technique used by Galashin, Lam, Trinh, and Williams to uniformly prove the enumeration of their noncrossing Catalan objects for finite Coxeter groups.

In the study of a tantalizing symmetry on Catalan objects, Bóna et al. introduced a family of polynomials $\{W_{n,k}(x)\}_{n\geq k\geq 0}$ defined by \begin{align*} W_{n,k}(x)=\sum_{m=0}^{k}w_{n,k,m}x^{m}, \end{align*} where $w_{n,k,m}$ counts the number of Dyck paths of semilength $n$ with $k$ occurrences of $UD$ and $m$ occurrences of $UUD$. They proposed two conjectures on the interlacing property of these polynomials, one of which states that $\{W_{n,k}(x)\}_{n\geq k}$ is a Sturm sequence for any fixed $k\geq 1$, and the other states that $\{W_{n,k}(x)\}_{1\leq k\leq n}$ is a Sturm-unimodal sequence for any fixed $n\geq 1$. In this paper, we obtain certain recurrence relations for $W_{n,k}(x)$, and further confirm their conjectures.

We solve two open problems in Coxeter-Catalan combinatorics. First, we introduce a family of rational noncrossing objects for any finite Coxeter group, using the combinatorics of distinguished subwords. Second, we give a type-uniform proof that these noncrossing Catalan objects are counted by the rational Coxeter-Catalan number, using the character theory of the associated Hecke algebra and the properties of Lusztig's exotic Fourier transform. We solve the same problems for rational noncrossing parking objects.
Enumerating $k$-Naples Parking Functions Through Catalan Objects
This paper studies a generalization of parking functions named $k$-Naples parking functions, where backward movement is allowed. One consequence of backward movement is that the number of ascending $k$-Naples is not the same as the number of descending $k$-Naples. This paper focuses on generalizing the bijections of ascending parking functions with combinatorial objects enumerated by the Catalan numbers in the setting of both ascending and descending $k$-Naples parking functions. These combinatorial objects include Dyck paths, binary trees, triangulations of polygons, and non-crossing partitions. Using these bijections, we enumerate both ascending and descending $k$-Naples parking functions.
A Bijection Between Weighted Dyck Paths and 1234-avoiding Up-Down Permutations
Three-dimensional Catalan numbers are a variant of the classical (bidimensional) Catalan numbers, that count, among other interesting objects, the standard Young tableaux of shape (n,n,n). In this paper, we present a structural bijection between two three-dimensional Catalan objects: 1234-avoiding up-down permutations, and a class of weighted Dyck paths.

We prove several new instances of the cyclic sieving phenomenon (CSP) on Catalan objects of type A and type B. Moreover, we refine many of the known instances of the CSP on Catalan objects. For example, we consider triangulations refined by the number of "ears", non-crossing matchings with a fixed number of short edges, and non-crossing configurations with a fixed number of loops and edges.

The Catalan numbers form a sequence that counts over 200 combinatorial objects. A remarkable property of the Catalan numbers, which extends to these objects, is its recursive definition; that is, we can determine the $n^{th}$ object from previous ones. Matroids are combinatorial objects that generalize the notion of linear independence and have connections with other fields of mathematics. A family of matroids, called unit interval positroids (UIP), are Catalan objects induced by the antiadjacency matrices of unit interval orders. Associated to each UIP is the set of externally ordered bases, which due to Las Vergnas, produces a lattice after adjoining a bottom element. We study the poset of externally ordered UIP bases and the implied Catalan-induced recursion. Explicitly, we describe an algorithm for constructing the lattice of a rank $n$ UIP from the lattice of lower ranks. Using their inherent combinatorial structure, we define a simple formula to enumerate the bases for a given UIP.

This paper presents a geometric model of the Auslander-Reiten quiver of a type A quiver together with a stability function for which all indecomposable modules are stable. We also introduce a new Catalan object which we call a maximal almost rigid representation. We show that its endomorphism algebra is a tilted algebra of type A. We define a partial order on the set of maximal almost rigid representations and use our new geometric model to show that this partial order is a Cambrian lattice.

As a classical object, the Tamari lattice has many generalizations, including $ν$-Tamari lattices and parabolic Tamari lattices. In this article, we unify these generalizations in a bijective fashion. We first prove that parabolic Tamari lattices are isomorphic to $ν$-Tamari lattices for bounce paths $ν$. We then introduce a new combinatorial object called `left-aligned colorable tree', and show that it provides a bijective bridge between various parabolic Catalan objects and certain nested pairs of Dyck paths. As a consequence, we prove the Steep-Bounce Conjecture using a generalization of the famous zeta map in $q,t$-Catalan combinatorics. A generalization of the zeta map on parking functions, which arises in the theory of diagonal harmonics, is also obtained as a labeled version of our bijection.
A Universal Bijection for Catalan Structures
A Catalan magma is a unique factorisation normed magma with only one irreducible element. The \val partitions the base set into subsets enumerated by Catalan numbers. The primary theorem characterises the conditions which a set a with product map must satisfy in order to be a free magma generated by the irreducible elements. This theorem can be used to prove a set of objects (with a product map) is a Catalan magma. The isomorphism between Catalan magmas gives a "universal" bijection -- essentially one bijection algorithm for all pairs of families. The morphism property ensures the bijection is recursive. The universal bijection allows us to give some rigour to the idea of an "embedding" bijection between Catalan objects which, in many cases, shows how to embed an element of one Catalan family into one of a different family. Multiplication on the right (respectively left) by the generator gives rise to the right (respectively left) Narayana statistic. The statistic is invariant under the universal bijection and hence allows us to determine what structures of any Catalan family are associated with this refinement. We discuss the relation between the symbolic method for Catalan families and the magma structure on the base set defined by the symbolic method. This shows which "atomic" elements are also irreducible. The appendix gives the magma structure for 14 Catalan families.
Signature Catalan Combinatorics

The Catalan numbers constitute one of the most important sequences in combinatorics. Catalan objects have been generalized in various directions, including the classical Fuss-Catalan objects and the rational Catalan generalization of Armstrong-Rhoades-Williams. We propose a wider generalization of these families indexed by a composition $s$ which is motivated by the combinatorics of planar rooted trees; when $s=(2,...,2)$ and $s=(k+1,...,k+1)$ we recover the classical Catalan and Fuss-Catalan combinatorics, respectively. Furthermore, to each pair $(a,b)$ of relatively prime numbers we can associate a signature that recovers the combinatorics of rational Catalan objects. We present explicit bijections between the resulting $s$-Catalan objects, and a fundamental recurrence that generalizes the fundamental recurrence of the classical Catalan numbers. Our framework allows us to define signature generalizations of parking functions which coincide with the generalized parking functions studied by Pitman-Stanley and Yan, as well as generalizations of permutations which coincide with the notion of Stirling multipermutations introduced by Gessel-Stanley. Some of our constructions differ from the ones of Armstrong-Rhoades-Williams, however as a byproduct of our extension, we obtain the additional notions of rational permutations and rational trees.

This article introduces and investigates a refinement of alternating sign trapezoids by means of Catalan objects and Motzkin paths. Alternating sign trapezoids are a generalisation of alternating sign triangles, which were recently introduced by Ayyer, Behrend and Fischer. We show that the number of alternating sign trapezoids associated with a Catalan object (resp. Motzkin path) is a polynomial function in the length of the shorter base of the trapezoid. We also study the rational roots of the polynomials and formulate several conjectures and derive some partial results. Lastly, we deduce a constant term identity for the refined counting of alternating sign trapezoids.

The Tamari lattice, defined on Catalan objects such as binary trees and Dyck paths, is a well-studied poset in combinatorics. It is thus natural to try to extend it to other families of lattice paths. In this article, we fathom such a possibility by defining and studying an analogy of the Tamari lattice on Motzkin paths. While our generalization is not a lattice, each of its connected components is isomorphic to an interval in the classical Tamari lattice. With this structural result, we proceed to the enumeration of components and intervals in the poset of Motzkin paths we defined. We also extend the structural and enumerative results to Schröder paths. We conclude by a discussion on the relation between our work and that of Baril and Pallo (2014).
Cyclic Sieving of Matchings
The cyclic sieving phenomenon (CSP) was introduced by Reiner, Stanton, and White to study combinatorial structures with actions of cyclic groups. The crucial step is to find a polynomial, for example a q-analog, that satisfies the CSP conditions for an action. This polynomial will give us a lot of information about the symmetry and structure of the set under the action. In this paper, we study the cyclic sieving phenomenon of the cyclic group $C_{2n}$ acting on $P_{n,k}$, which is the set of matchings of $2n$ points on a circle with $k$ crossings. The noncrossing matchings ($k=0$) was recently studied as a Catalan object. In this paper, we study more general cases, the matchings with more number of crossings. We prove that there exists $q$-analog polynomials $f_{n,k}(q)$ such that $(P_{n,k},f_{n,k},C_{2n})$ exhibits the cyclic sieving phenomenon for $k=1,2,3$. In the proof, we also introduce an efficient representation of the elements in $P_{n,k}$, which helps us to understand the symmetrical structure of the set.

In this paper, we exploit the combinatorics and geometry of triangulations of products of simplices to derive new results in the context of Catalan combinatorics of $ν$-Tamari lattices. In our framework, the main role of "Catalan objects" is played by $(I,\overline{J})$-trees: bipartite trees associated to a pair $(I,\overline{J})$ of finite index sets that stand in simple bijection with lattice paths weakly above a lattice path $ν=ν(I,\overline{J})$. Such trees label the maximal simplices of a triangulation whose dual polyhedral complex gives a geometric realization of the $ν$-Tamari lattice introduced by Prévile-Ratelle and Viennot. In particular, we obtain geometric realizations of $m$-Tamari lattices as polyhedral subdivisions of associahedra induced by an arrangement of tropical hyperplanes, giving a positive answer to an open question of F.~Bergeron.
The simplicial complex underlying our triangulation endows the $ν$-Tamari lattice with a full simplicial complex structure. It is a natural generalization of the classical simplicial associahedron, alternative to the rational associahedron of Armstrong, Rhoades and Williams, whose $h$-vector entries are given by a suitable generalization of the Narayana numbers.
Our methods are amenable to cyclic symmetry, which we use to present type $B$ analogues of our constructions. Notably, we define a partial order that generalizes the type $B$ Tamari lattice, introduced independently by Thomas and Reading, along with corresponding geometric realizations.
