Isodiametric inequality for vector spaces
A theorem of Kleitman states that a collection of binary vectors with diameter d has cardinality at most that of a Hamming ball of radius d/2. In this paper, we give a q-analog of it.

Mixed Dimer Models for Euler and Catalan Numbers
We study the enumeration of mixed dimer covers on skew Young diagrams of ribbon shape (also called border strips or snake graphs). For the two extreme cases of straight and zigzag shapes, we show that the number of mixed dimer covers are given by the Euler and Catalan numbers. We also give q-analogs by showing that the rank generating functions of the partial orders on mixed dimer covers agree with certain q-Euler and q-Catalan numbers. These q-analogs are a consequence of an isomorphism between the partial order on mixed dimer covers and the so-called middle order on certain classes of permutations.

Set-Valued Catalan Combinatorics
Set-valued standard Young tableaux are a generalization of standard Young tableaux due to Buch (2002) with applications in algebraic geometry. The enumeration of set-valued SYT is significantly more complicated than in the ordinary case, although product formulas are known in certain special cases. In this work we study the case of two-rowed set-valued SYT with a fixed number of entries. These tableaux are a new combinatorial model for the Catalan, Narayana, and Kreweras numbers, and can be shown to be in correspondence with both 321-avoiding permutations and a certain class of bicolored Motzkin paths. We also introduce a generalization of the set-valued comajor index studied by Hopkins, Lazar, and Linusson (2023), and use this statistic to find seemingly new q-analogs of the Catalan and Narayana numbers.

Designs in finite classical polar spaces
Published in Designs, Codes and Cryptography 93[4] (2025), 1143-1162 • View PublicationBIB
Combinatorial designs have been studied for nearly 200 years. Fifty years ago, Cameron, Delsarte, and Ray-Chaudhury started investigating their q-analogs, also known as subspace designs or designs over finite fields. Designs can be defined analogously in finite classical polar spaces, too. The definition includes the m-regular systems from projective geometry as the special case where the blocks are generators of the polar space. The first nontrivial such designs for t > 1 were found by De Bruyn and Vanhove in 2012, and some more designs appeared recently in the PhD thesis of Lansdown. In this article, we investigate the theory of classical and subspace designs for applicability to designs in polar spaces, explicitly allowing arbitrary block dimensions. In this way, we obtain divisibility conditions on the parameters, derived and residual designs, intersection numbers and an analog of Fisher's inequality. We classify the parameters of symmetric designs. Furthermore, we conduct a computer search to construct designs of strength t=2, resulting in designs for more than 140 previously unknown parameter sets in various classical polar spaces over GF(2) and GF(3).

Factorial Basis Method for q-Series Applications
The Factorial Basis method, initially designed for quasi-triangular, shift-compatible factorial bases, provides solutions to linear recurrence equations in the form of definite-sums. This paper extends the Factorial Basis method to its q-analog, enabling its application in q-calculus. We demonstrate the adaptation of the method to q-sequences and its utility in the realm of q-combinatorics. The extended technique is employed to automatically prove established identities and unveil novel ones, particularly some associated with the Rogers-Ramanujan identities.

A q-analog of certain symmetric functions and one of its specializations
Let the symmetric functions be defined for the pair of integers $\left( n,r\right) $, $n\geq r\geq 1$, by $p_{n}^{\left( r\right) }=\sum m_{λ}$ where $m_{λ}$ are the monomial symmetric functions, the sum being over the partitions $λ$ of the integer $n$ with length $r$. We introduce by a generating function, a $q$-analog of $p_{n}^{\left( r\right) }$ and give some of its properties. This $q$-analog is related to its the classical form using the $q$-Stirling numbers. We also start with the same procedure the study of a $p,q$-analog of $p_{n}^{\left( r\right) }$. By specialization of this $q$-analog in the series $\sum\nolimits_{n=0}^{ \infty }q^{\binom{n}{2}}t^{n}/n!$, we recover in a purely formal way$\ $a class of polynomials $J_{n}^{\left( r\right) }$ historically introduced as combinatorial enumerators, in particular of tree inversions. This also results in a new linear recurrence for those polynomials whose triangular table can be constructed, row by row, from the initial conditions $ J_{r}^{\left( r\right) }=1$. The form of this recurrence is also given for the reciprocal polynomials of $J_{n}^{\left( r\right) }$, known to be the sum enumerators of parking functions. Explicit formulas for $J_{n}^{\left( r\right) }$ and their reciprocals are deduced, leading inversely to new representations of these polynomials as forest statistics.

Algebraic identities on q-harmonic numbers and q-binomial coefficients
The aim of this paper is to present a general algebraic identity. Applying this identity, we provide several formulas involving the q-binomial coefficients and the q-harmonic numbers. We also recover some known identities including an algebraic identity of D. Y. Zheng on q-Apéry numbers and we establish the q-analog of Euler's formula. The proposed results may have important applications in the theory of q-supercongruences.

A q-analog of the adjacency matrix of the n-cube
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define a q-analog of the adjacency matrix of the n-cube, determine its eigenvalues and write down a canonical eigenbasis. We give a weighted count of the number of rooted spanning trees in the q-analog of the n-cube. Remarks on the previous version: The q-analog of the Kac matrix appears in Terwilliger's classification of Leonard pairs and as such its eigenvalues and eigenvectors were known. Reference added to Terwilliger's papers and also to a paper of Johnson. Title changed to reflect this.

Hankel determinants of middle binomial coefficients and conjectures for some polynomial extensions and modifications
The middle binomial coefficients can be interpreted as numbers of Motzkin paths which have no horizontal steps at positive heights. Assigning suitable weights gives some nice polynomial extensions. We determine the Hankel determinants and their generating functions for the middle binomial coefficients and derive many conjectures for their polynomial extensions. Finally, we explore experimentally some modifications of the middle binomial coefficients whose Hankel determinants show an interesting modular pattern and obtain some q-analogs.
Product Expansions of q-Character Polynomials

The ring of q-character polynomials is a q-analog of the classical ring of character polynomials for the symmetric groups. This ring consists of certain class functions defined simultaneously on the groups $Gl_n(F_q)$ for all n, which we also interpret as statistics on matrices. Here we evaluate these statistics on all matrices and work towards computing the structure constants of the product in this ring. We show that the statistics are periodically polynomial in q, and governed by universal polynomials $P_{λ,μ}(q)$ which we compute explicitly, indexed by pairs of integer partitions. The product structure is similarly polynomial in q in many cases, governed by polynomials $R_{λ,μ}^ν(q)$ indexed by triples of partitions, which we compute in some cases. Our calculations seem to exhibit several unexpected patterns. Mainly, we conjecture that certain indecomposable statistics generate the whole ring, and indeed prove this for statistics associated with matrices consisting of up to 2 Jordan blocks. Furthermore, the coefficients we compute exhibit surprising stability phenomena, which in turn reflect stabilizations of joint moments as well as multiplicities in the irreducible decomposition of tensor products of representations of $Gl_n(F_q)$ for $n\gg 1$. We use this stabilization to compute the correlation of the number of unipotent Jordan blocks of two sizes.

Cyclic Sieving of Matchings
The cyclic sieving phenomenon (CSP) was introduced by Reiner, Stanton, and White to study combinatorial structures with actions of cyclic groups. The crucial step is to find a polynomial, for example a q-analog, that satisfies the CSP conditions for an action. This polynomial will give us a lot of information about the symmetry and structure of the set under the action. In this paper, we study the cyclic sieving phenomenon of the cyclic group $C_{2n}$ acting on $P_{n,k}$, which is the set of matchings of $2n$ points on a circle with $k$ crossings. The noncrossing matchings ($k=0$) was recently studied as a Catalan object. In this paper, we study more general cases, the matchings with more number of crossings. We prove that there exists $q$-analog polynomials $f_{n,k}(q)$ such that $(P_{n,k},f_{n,k},C_{2n})$ exhibits the cyclic sieving phenomenon for $k=1,2,3$. In the proof, we also introduce an efficient representation of the elements in $P_{n,k}$, which helps us to understand the symmetrical structure of the set.

A q-analog of Schläfli and Gould identities on Stirling numbers
Published in Ramanujan Journal, 46 (2018), 483--507 • View PublicationBIB
Stirling numbers of both kinds are linked to each other via two combinatorial identities due to Schläfli and Gould. Using q-analogs of Stirling numbers defined as inversion generating functions, we provide q-analogs of the two identities. The proof is computational and we leave open the problem of finding a more combinatorial one.

Designs and codes in affine geometry
Classical designs and their (projective) q-analogs can both be viewed as designs in matroids, using the matroid of all subsets of a set and the matroid of linearly independent subsets of a vector space, respectively. Another natural matroid is given by the point sets in general position of an affine space, leading to the concept of an affine design. Accordingly, a t-(n, k, $λ$) affine design of order q is a collection B of (k-1)-dimensional spaces in the affine geometry A = AG(n-1, q) such that each (t-1)-dimensional space in A is contained in exactly $λ$ spaces of B. In the case $λ$ = 1, as usual, one also refers to an affine Steiner system S(t, k, n). In this work we examine the relationship between the affine and the projective q-analogs of designs. The existence of affine Steiner systems with various parameters is shown, including the affine q-analog S(2, 3, 7) of the Fano plane. Moreover, we consider various distances in matroids and geometries, and we discuss the application of codes in affine geometry for error-control in a random network coding scenario.

The number of direct-sum decompositions of a finite vector space
Published • View PublicationBIB
The theory of q-analogs develops many combinatorial formulas for finite vector spaces over a finite field with q elements--all in analogy with formulas for finite sets (which are the special case of q=1). A direct-sum decomposition of a finite vector space is the vector space analogue of a set partition. This paper develops the formulas for the number of direct-sum decompositions that are the q-analogs of the formulas for: (1) the number of set partitions with a given number partition signature; (2) the number of set partitions of an n-element set with m blocks (the Stirling numbers of the second kind); and (3) for the total number of set partitions of an n-element set (the Bell numbers).

A q-Analog of Foulke's conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
We propose a $q$-analog of classical plethystic conjectures due to Foulkes. In our conjectures, a divided difference of plethysms of Hall-Littlewood polynomials $H_n(\mathbf{x};q)$ replaces the analogous difference of plethysms of complete homogeneous symmetric functions $h_n(\mathbf{x})$ in Foulkes conjecture. At $q=0$, we get back the original statement of Foulkes, and we show that our version holds at $q=1$. We discuss further supporting evidence, as well as various generalizations.
