Classification of Collisions of Twisted Foulkes Character Polynomials
The twisted Foulkes character polynomial is an algebraically defined polynomial attached to an integer partition. We determine precisely how much combinatorial information this polynomial encodes by completely classifying all pairs of partitions that give rise to the same polynomial. Our main result shows that equality of twisted Foulkes character polynomials admits a purely combinatorial characterization in terms of two explicit local operations on partitions.
Hook restriction coefficients
The permutation matrices form a subgroup of $\text{GL}_n(\mathbb{C})$ that is isomorphic to the symmetric group $S_n$. Let $r_{μλ}$ denote the multiplicity of the irreducible representation $V_μ$ of $S_n$, corresponding to a partition $μ$ of $n$, in the restriction of an irreducible polynomial representation $W_λ(\mathbb{C})$ of $\text{GL}_n(\mathbb{C})$, corresponding to a partition $λ$ with at most $n$ parts. Finding a combinatorial interpretation for $r_{μλ}$ remains an open problem in algebraic combinatorics, called the \emph{restriction problem}.
We derive a new nonrecursive expression for a character polynomial called the \emph{Specht polynomial} and use it to find a combinatorial interpretation of $r_{μλ}$ when $λ$ is a hook-shaped partition.
Explicit formulas for permutation pattern character polynomials
Given permutations $π\in S_n$ and $σ\in S_k$, let $N_σ(π)$ denote the number of occurrences of $σ$ in $π$. While pattern avoidance and the distribution of pattern occurrences in permutations have been extensively studied, their interactions with the group structure on $S_n$ are still poorly understood. Gaetz and Ryba showed that the expected value of $χ^{λ[n]}(π)N_σ(π)$ for $π\in S_n$ is given by a polynomial $a_σ^λ(n)$. More recently, Gaetz and Pierson derived explicit formulas for $a_{\mathrm{id}_k}^λ(n)$ when $\lvertλ\rvert \le 2$, which led them to conjecture that the polynomials $a_{\mathrm{id}_k}^λ(n)$ are real-rooted and nonnegative for $n \ge k$. We show that for all partitions $λ$, the polynomials $a_{\mathrm{id}_k}^λ(n)$ admit explicit closed forms in $n$ and $k$. These formulas allow us to exhibit counterexamples to Gaetz and Pierson's real-rootedness conjecture as well as to prove special cases of their nonnegativity conjecture. Lastly, we note that our results imply that the expected value of $f \cdot N_{\mathrm{id}_k}$ on $S_n$ admits a closed form whenever $f$ is a permutation statistic expressible as a polynomial in the functions $m_j \colon \bigsqcup_{n \ge 0} S_n \to \mathbb{Z}$ which count $j$-cycles in their inputs.

We use character polynomials to obtain a positive combinatorial interpretation of the multiplicity of the sign representation in irreducible polynomial representations of $GL_n(\mathbb{C})$ indexed by two-column and hook partitions. Our method also yields a positive combinatorial interpretation for the multiplicity of the trivial representation of $S_n$ in an irreducible polynomial representation indexed by a hook partition.

Stanley and Féray gave a formula for the irreducible character of the symmetric group related to a multi-rectangular Young diagram. This formula shows that the character is a polynomial in the multi-rectangular coordinates and gives an explicit combinatorial interpretation for its coefficients in terms of counting certain decorated maps (i.e., graphs drawn on surfaces). In the current paper we concentrate on the coefficients of the top-degree monomials in the Stanley character polynomial, which corresponds to counting certain decorated plane trees. We give an explicit bijection between such trees and minimal factorizations of a cycle.
Characters of local and regular permutation statistics
The goal of this monograph is to study the indicator function for a set of permutations mapping one finite sequence of positive integers to another from a representation theoretic, combinatorial and probabilistic perspective. The degree of a function of permutations is the size of the largest pair of sequences required when expressing it as a linear combination of these indicators. This notion of degree, implicit in work of Diaconis, is critical for many applications of representation theory to extremal combinatorics, machine learning, probability and statistics. We use the term local to indicate bounded degree and initiate the study of low degree class functions, which encode probabilistic data for permutation statistics on each cycle type simultaneously.
We begin with a self contained treatment of for functions of permutations, developing its theory using language familiar to enumerative and algebraic combinatorialists. This leads naturally to a novel basis for symmetric functions we call the path power sum symmetric functions. The most technically challenging part of our work is the path Murnaghan-Nakayama formula, which expands path power sums into Schur functions. By combining the the path Murnaghan-Nakayam formula with the classical theory of character polynomials, one obtains a structural characterization for moments for permutation statistics conditioning on cycle type. We then analyze asymptotic properties of these moments. In doing so, we introduce the novel family of regular permutation statistics, which include almost all reasonable weighted pattern counting statistics. We show a large family of regular statistics satisfy a law of large numbers on a given cycle type depending only on the proportion of fixed points and a have variances depending only on fixed points and two cycles.

Let $N_σ(π)$ denote the number of occurrences of a permutation pattern $σ\in S_k$ in a permutation $π\in S_n$. Gaetz and Ryba (2021) showed using partition algebras that the $d$-th moment $M_{σ,d,n}(π)$ of $N_σ$ on the conjugacy class of $π$ is given by a polynomial in $n,m_1,\dots,m_{dk}$, where $m_i$ denotes the number of $i$-cycles of $π$. They also showed that the coefficient $\langle χ^{λ[n]}, M_{σ,d,n}\rangle$ agrees with a polynomial $a_{σ,d}^λ(n)$ in $n$. This work is motivated by the conjecture that when $σ=\text{id}_k$ is the identity permutation, all of these coefficients are nonnegative. We directly compute closed forms for the polynomials $a_{\text{id}_k}^λ(n)$ in the cases $λ=(1),(1,1),$ and $(2)$, and use this to verify the positivity conjecture for those cases by showing that the polynomials are real-rooted with all roots less than $k$. We also study the case $a_σ^{(1)}(n)$, for which we give a formula for the polynomials and their leading coefficients.

The ring of q-character polynomials is a q-analog of the classical ring of character polynomials for the symmetric groups. This ring consists of certain class functions defined simultaneously on the groups $Gl_n(F_q)$ for all n, which we also interpret as statistics on matrices. Here we evaluate these statistics on all matrices and work towards computing the structure constants of the product in this ring. We show that the statistics are periodically polynomial in q, and governed by universal polynomials $P_{λ,μ}(q)$ which we compute explicitly, indexed by pairs of integer partitions. The product structure is similarly polynomial in q in many cases, governed by polynomials $R_{λ,μ}^ν(q)$ indexed by triples of partitions, which we compute in some cases.
Our calculations seem to exhibit several unexpected patterns. Mainly, we conjecture that certain indecomposable statistics generate the whole ring, and indeed prove this for statistics associated with matrices consisting of up to 2 Jordan blocks. Furthermore, the coefficients we compute exhibit surprising stability phenomena, which in turn reflect stabilizations of joint moments as well as multiplicities in the irreducible decomposition of tensor products of representations of $Gl_n(F_q)$ for $n\gg 1$. We use this stabilization to compute the correlation of the number of unipotent Jordan blocks of two sizes.

Goulden-Rattan polynomials give the exact value of the subdominant part of the normalized characters of the symmetric groups in terms of certain quantities ($C_i$) which describe the macroscopic shape of the Young diagram. The Goulden-Rattan positivity conjecture states that the coefficients of these polynomials are positive rational numbers with small denominators. We prove a special case of this conjecture for the coefficient of the quadratic term $C_2^2$ by applying certain bijections involving maps (i.e., graphs drawn on surfaces).

Character polynomials are used to study the restriction of a polynomial representation of a general linear group to its subgroup of permutation matrices. A simple formula is obtained for computing inner products of class functions given by character polynomials. Character polynomials for symmetric and alternating tensors are computed using generating functions with Eulerian factorizations. These are used to compute character polynomials for Weyl modules, which exhibit a duality. By taking inner products of character polynomials for Weyl modules and character polynomials for Specht modules, stable restriction coefficients are easily computed. Generating functions of dimensions of symmetric group invariants in Weyl modules are obtained. Partitions with two rows, two columns, and hook partitions whose Weyl modules have non-zero vectors invariant under the symmetric group are characterized. A reformulation of the restriction problem in terms of a restriction functor from the category of strict polynomial functors to the category of finitely generated FI-modules is obtained.
Character polynomials for two rows and hook partitions
Representation theory of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ has a very distinctive combinatorial flavor. The conjugacy classes as well as the irreducible characters are indexed by integer partitions $λ\vdash n$. We introduce class functions on $\mathfrak{S}_n$ that count the number of certain tilings of Young diagrams. The counting interpretation gives a uniform expression of these class functions in the ring of character polynomials, as defined by \cite{murnaghanfirst}. A modern treatment of character polynomials is given in \cite{orellana-zabrocki}. We prove a relation between these combinatorial class functions in the (virtual) character ring. From this relation, we were able to prove Goupil's generating function identity \cite{goupil}, which can then be used to derive Rosas' formula \cite{rosas} for Kronecker coefficients of hook shape partitions and two row partitions.

Picking permutations at random, the expected number of k-cycles is known to be 1/k and is, in particular, independent of the size of the permuted set. This short note gives similar size-independent statistics of finite general linear groups: ones that depend only on small minors. The proof technique uses combinatorics of categories, motivated by representation stability, and applies simultaneously to symmetric groups, finite linear groups and many other settings.
A random walk on the symmetric group generated by random involutions

The involution walk is the random walk on $S_n$ generated by involutions with a binomially distributed with parameter $1-p$ number of $2$-cycles. This is a parallelization of the transposition walk. The involution walk is shown in this paper to mix for $\frac{1}{2} \leq p \leq 1$ fixed, $n$ sufficiently large in between $\log_{1/p}(n)$ steps and $\log_{2/(1+p)}(n)$ steps. The paper introduces a new technique for finding eigenvalues of random walks on the symmetric group generated by many conjugacy classes using the character polynomial for the characters of the representations of the symmetric group. Monotonicity relations used in the bound also give after sufficient time the likelihood order, the asymptotic order from most likely to least likely permutation. The walk was introduced to study a conjecture about a random walk on the unitary group from the information theory of black holes.
Twisted cohomology of configuration spaces and spaces of maximal tori via point-counting
We consider two families of algebraic varieties $Y_n$ indexed by natural numbers $n$: the configuration space of unordered $n$-tuples of distinct points on $\mathbb{C}$, and the space of unordered $n$-tuples of linearly independent lines in $\mathbb{C}^n$. Let $W_n$ be any sequence of virtual $S_n$-representations given by a character polynomial, we compute $H^i(Y_n; W_n)$ for all $i$ and all $n$ in terms of double generating functions. One consequence of the computation is a new recurrence phenomenon: the stable twisted Betti numbers $\lim_{n\to\infty}\dim H^i(Y_n; W_n)$ are linearly recurrent in $i$. Our method is to compute twisted point-counts on the $F_q$-points of certain algebraic varieties, and then pass through the Grothendieck-Lefschetz fixed point formula to prove results in topology. We also generalize a result of Church-Ellenberg-Farb about the configuration spaces of the affine line to those of a general smooth variety.
Symmetric group characters as symmetric functions (extended abstract)
The irreducible characters of the symmetric group are a symmetric polynomial in the eigenvalues of a permutation matrix. They can therefore be realized as a symmetric function that can be evaluated at a set of variables and form a basis of the symmetric functions. This basis of the symmetric functions is of non-homogeneous degree and the (outer) product structure coefficients are the stable Kronecker coefficients.
We introduce the irreducible character basis by defining it in terms of the induced trivial characters of the symmetric group which also form a basis of the symmetric functions. The irreducible character basis is closely related to character polynomials and we obtain some of the change of basis coefficients by making this connection explicit. Other change of basis coefficients come from a representation theoretic connection with the partition algebra, and still others are derived by developing combinatorial expressions.
This document is an extended abstract which can be used as a review reference so that this basis can be implemented in Sage. A more complete version of the results in this abstract can be found in {\tt arXiv:1605.06672}.
FI_W-modules and constraints on classical Weyl group characters

In this paper we study the characters of sequences of representations of any of the three families of classical Weyl groups W_n: the symmetric groups, the signed permutation groups (hyperoctahedral groups), or the even-signed permutation groups. Our results extend work of Church, Ellenberg, Farb, and Nagpal on the symmetric groups. We use the concept of an FI_W-module, an algebraic object that encodes the data of a sequence of W_n-representations with maps between them, defined in the author's recent work ArXiv:1309.3817.
We show that if a sequence {V_n} of W_n-representations has the structure of a finitely generated FI_W-module, then there are substantial constraints on the growth of the sequence and the structure of the characters: for n large, the dimension of V_n is equal to a polynomial in n, and the characters of V_n are given by a character polynomial in signed-cycle-counting class functions, independent of n. We determine bounds the degrees of these polynomials.
We continue to develop the theory of FI_W-modules, and we apply this theory to obtain new results about a number of sequences associated to the classical Weyl groups: the cohomology of complements of classical Coxeter hyperplane arrangements, and the cohomology of the pure string motion groups (the groups of symmetric automorphisms of the free group).

Following the lead of Stanley and Gessel, we consider a morphism which associates to an acyclic directed graph (or a poset) a quasi-symmetric function. The latter is naturally defined as multivariate generating series of non-decreasing functions on the graph. We describe the kernel of this morphism, using a simple combinatorial operation that we call cyclic inclusion-exclusion. Our result also holds for the natural noncommutative analog and for the commutative and noncommutative restrictions to bipartite graphs. An application to the theory of Kerov character polynomials is given.

Stanley considered suitably normalized characters of the symmetric groups on Young diagrams having a special geometric form, namely multirectangular Young diagrams. He proved that the character is a polynomial in the lengths of the sides of the rectangles forming the Young diagram and he conjectured an explicit form of this polynomial. This Stanley character polynomial and this way of parametrizing the set of Young diagrams turned out to be a powerful tool for several problems of the dual combinatorics of the characters of the symmetric groups and asymptotic representation theory, in particular to Kerov polynomials.

Tittmann, Averbouch and Makowsky [P. Tittmann, I. Averbouch, J.A. Makowsky, The enumeration of vertex induced subgraphs with respect to the number of components, European Journal of Combinatorics, 32 (2011) 954-974], introduced the subgraph component polynomial $Q(G;x,y)$ which counts the number of connected components in vertex induced subgraphs. It contains much of the underlying graph's structural information, e.g. the order, the size, the independence number. We show that there are several other graph invariants, like the connectivity, the number of cycles of length four in a regular bipartite graph, are determined by the subgraph component polynomial. Using the obtained results, we find several well-known families of graphs are determined by $Q(G;x,y)$: paths, cycles, tadpole graphs, complete bipartite graphs, friendship graphs, book graphs and hypercubes. Moreover, we study the distinguish power and find some simple graphs which are not distinguished by the subgraph component polynomial but distinguished by the Tutte polynomial and the character polynomial. These are answers to three questions concerning the subgraph component polynomial proposed by Tittmann et al.
An edge-weighted hook formula for labelled trees

A number of hook formulas and hook summation formulas have previously appeared, involving various classes of trees. One of these classes of trees is rooted trees with labelled vertices, in which the labels increase along every chain from the root vertex to a leaf. In this paper we give a new hook summation formula for these (unordered increasing) trees, by introducing a new set of indeterminates indexed by pairs of vertices, that we call edge weights. This new result generalizes a previous result by Féray and Goulden, that arose in the context of representations of the symmetric group via the study of Kerov's character polynomials. Our proof is by means of a combinatorial bijection that is a generalization of the Prüfer code for labelled trees.
