Pascal, Catalan, Motzkin triangles and tensor product multiplicities
The main purpose of this note is to provide an elementary discussion of some simple triangles of integer numbers in particular through their connections with representation theory of $sl_2$. The triangles under consideration are the Catalan triangle and the Motzkin triangle together with their generalisations that we introduce here. We advocate the point of view that these triangles are given by the well-known and classical Pascal rule starting from a well-chosen initial condition. We give an elementary derivation of the fact that the numbers in these triangles are multiplicities appearing in tensor products of $sl_2$-representations and that they are simply expressed as a difference of generalised binomial coefficients. We also take the opportunity to discuss the ``sum of squares'' phenomenon that happens in these triangles through the lense of representation theory.

Color rules for cyclic wreath products and semigroup algebras from projective toric varieties
We introduce the notion of "color rules" for computing class functions of $Z_k \wr S_n$, where $Z_k$ is the cyclic group of order $k$ and $S_n$ is the symmetric group on $n$ letters. Using a general sign-reversing involution and a map of order $k$, we give a combinatorial proof that the irreducible decomposition of these class functions is given by a weighted sum over semistandard tableaux in the colors. Since using two colors at once is also a color rule, we are consequently able to decompose arbitrary tensor products of representations whose characters can be computed via color rules. This method extends to class functions of $G \wr S_n$ where $G$ is a finite abelian group. We give a number of applications, including decomposing tensor powers of the defining representation, along with a combinatorial proof of the Murnaghan-Nakayama rule for $Z_k \wr S_n$. Our main application is to the study of the linear action of $Z_k \wr S_n$ on bigraded affine semigroup algebras arising from the product of projective toric varieties. In the case of the product of projective spaces, our methods give the decomposition of these bigraded characters into irreducible characters, thus deriving equivariant generalizations of Euler-Mahonian identities.
Matrix symmetric and quasi-symmetric functions and noncommutative representation theory

A fundamental result by L. Solomon in algebraic combinatorics and representation theory states that Mackey formulas for products of characters of a symmetric group, or equivalently the computation of tensor products of representations thereof, can be lifted to the corresponding Solomon's descent algebra, a subalgebra of the group algebra with a very rich structure. Motivated by the structure of the product formula in these algebras and by other results and ideas in the field, we introduce and investigate in the present article a two dimensional analogue of descent algebras based on packed integer matrices that inherits most of their fundamental properties. One of the various bialgebra structures we introduce on packed integer matrices identifies with a bialgebra recently introduced by J. Diehl and L. Schmitz to define a two dimensional generalisation of Chen's iterated integrals signatures.

Tableau evacuation and webs
Published in Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. Ser. B 10 (2023) 341-352 • View Publication • BIB
Webs are certain planar diagrams embedded in disks. They index and describe bases of tensor products of representations of $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ and $\mathfrak{sl}_3$. There are explicit bijections between webs and certain rectangular tableaux. Work of Petersen-Pylyavskyy-Rhoades (2009) and Russell (2013) shows that these bijections relate web rotation to tableau promotion. We describe the analogous relation between web reflection and tableau evacuation.
Product Expansions of q-Character Polynomials

The ring of q-character polynomials is a q-analog of the classical ring of character polynomials for the symmetric groups. This ring consists of certain class functions defined simultaneously on the groups $Gl_n(F_q)$ for all n, which we also interpret as statistics on matrices. Here we evaluate these statistics on all matrices and work towards computing the structure constants of the product in this ring. We show that the statistics are periodically polynomial in q, and governed by universal polynomials $P_{λ,μ}(q)$ which we compute explicitly, indexed by pairs of integer partitions. The product structure is similarly polynomial in q in many cases, governed by polynomials $R_{λ,μ}^ν(q)$ indexed by triples of partitions, which we compute in some cases. Our calculations seem to exhibit several unexpected patterns. Mainly, we conjecture that certain indecomposable statistics generate the whole ring, and indeed prove this for statistics associated with matrices consisting of up to 2 Jordan blocks. Furthermore, the coefficients we compute exhibit surprising stability phenomena, which in turn reflect stabilizations of joint moments as well as multiplicities in the irreducible decomposition of tensor products of representations of $Gl_n(F_q)$ for $n\gg 1$. We use this stabilization to compute the correlation of the number of unipotent Jordan blocks of two sizes.

Tensor diagrams and Chebyshev polynomials

In this paper, we describe a class of elements in the ring of $\mathrm{SL}(V)$-invariant polynomial functions on the space of configurations of vectors and linear forms of a 3-dimensional vector space $V.$ These elements are related to one another by an induction formula using Chebyshev polynomials. We also investigate the relation between these polynomials and G. Lusztig's dual canonical basis in tensor products of representations of $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_3(\mathbb C)).$

Fluctuations of particle systems determined by Schur generating functions
Published in Advances in Mathematics, 338 (2018), 702-781 • View Publication • BIB
We develop a new toolbox for the analysis of the global behavior of stochastic discrete particle systems. We introduce and study the notion of the Schur generating function of a random discrete configuration. Our main result provides a Central Limit Theorem (CLT) for such a configuration given certain conditions on the Schur generating function. As applications of this approach, we prove CLT's for several probabilistic models coming from asymptotic representation theory and statistical physics, including random lozenge and domino tilings, non-intersecting random walks, decompositions of tensor products of representations of unitary groups.

From Entanglement Witness to Generalized Catalan Numbers
Published in Scientific Reports 6, 30232 (2016) • View Publication • BIB
The problem of entanglement detection for arbitrary spin systems is analyzed. We demonstrate how a single measurement of the squared total spin can probabilistically discern separable from entangled many-particle states. For achieving this goal, we construct a tripartite analogy between the degeneracy of entanglement witness eigenstates, tensor products of $SO(3)$ representations and classical lattice walks with special constraints. Within this framework, degeneracies are naturally given by generalized Catalan numbers and determine the fraction of states that are decidedly entangled and also known to be somewhat protected against decoherence. In addition, we introduce the concept of a "sterile entanglement witness", which for large enough systems detects entanglement without affecting much the system's state. We discuss when our proposed entanglement witness can be regarded as a sterile one.

A simple bijection between standard (n,n,n) tableaux and irreducible webs for sl_3

Combinatorial spiders are a model for the invariant space of the tensor product of representations. The basic objects, webs, are certain directed planar graphs with boundary; algebraic operations on representations correspond to graph-theoretic operations on webs. Kuperberg developed spiders for rank 2 Lie algebras and sl_2. Building on a result of Kuperberg's, Khovanov-Kuperberg found a recursive algorithm giving a bijection between standard Young tableaux of shape (n,n,n) and irreducible webs for sl_3 whose boundary vertices are all sources. In this paper, we give a simple and explicit map from standard Young tableaux of shape (n,n,n) to irreducible webs for sl_3 whose boundary vertices are all sources, and show that it is the same as Khovanov-Kuperberg's map. Our construction generalizes to some webs with both sources and sinks on the boundary. Moreover, it allows us to extend the correspondence between webs and tableaux in two ways. First, we provide a short, geometric proof of Petersen-Pylyavskyy-Rhoades's recent result that rotation of webs corresponds to jeu-de-taquin promotion on (n,n,n) tableaux. Second, we define another natural operation on tableaux called a shuffle, and show that it corresponds to the join of two webs. Our main tool is an intermediary object between tableaux and webs that we call an m-diagram. The construction of m-diagrams, like many of our results, applies to shapes of tableaux other than (n,n,n).

Gaussian fluctuations of characters of symmetric groups and of Young diagrams
Published in Probab. Theory Related Fields 136 (2006), no. 2, 263-297 • View Publication • BIB
We study asymptotics of reducible representations of the symmetric groups S_q for large q. We decompose such a representation as a sum of irreducible components (or, alternatively, Young diagrams) and we ask what is the character of a randomly chosen component (or, what is the shape of a randomly chosen Young diagram). Our main result is that for a large class of representations the fluctuations of characters (and fluctuations of the shape of the Young diagrams) are asymptotically Gaussian; in this way we generalize Kerov's central limit theorem. The considered class consists of representations for which the characters almost factorize and this class includes, for example, left-regular representation (Plancherel measure), tensor representations. This class is also closed under induction, restriction, outer product and tensor product of representations. Our main tool in the proof is the method of genus expansion, well known from the random matrix theory.

Tensor invariants of SL(n), wave graphs and L-tris
The space of invariants of a tensor product of representations of SL(n) is provided with the basis parametrized by wave graphs introduced here especially for this purpose. The proof utilizes a game similar to Tetris, named here L-tris.

Tensor decompositions for SL(2) and outerplanar graphs
The main result of this article is the decomposition of tensor products of representations of SL(2) in the sum of irreducible representations parametrized by outerplanar graphs. An outerplanar graph is a graph with the vertices 0, 1, 2, ..., m, edges of which can be drawn in the upper half-plane without intersections. I allow for a graph to have multiple edges, but don't allow loops.
