A memorial tribute: Adriano Garsia (1928--2024)
Adriano Mario Garsia was born in Tunis on August 20, 1928, to a Tunisian-Italian family. He lived on a farm there until the end of World War II, then moved to Rome. After finishing high school, he was sent to the United States to live with relatives in Woyming and eventually made his way to California, becoming a student of Charles Loewner at Stanford in the early 1950s. Following his Ph.D., Adriano held positions at MIT, the University of Minnesota, and Caltech before joining the nascent mathematics department at the University of California, San Diego, in 1966 where he spent the remainder of his career. He passed away in San Diego on October 6, 2024, at the age of 96.

Five-Term Relations for wreath Macdonald polynomials and tableau formulas for Pieri coefficients
We present a variety of new identities involving operators in the theory of wreath Macdonald polynomials. One such family of identities gives five-term relations, analogous to the one given by Garsia and Mellit for the modified Macdonald polynomials. As a consequence, we generate tableau formulas for wreath Macdonald Pieri coefficients, which give an incredibly quick way of computing their monomial expansions.

Tesler identities for wreath Macdonald polynomials
We give an explicit formula for an operator that sends a wreath Macdonald polynomial to the delta function at a character associated to its partition. This allows us to prove many new results for wreath Macdonald polynomials, especially pertaining to reciprocity: Macdonald--Koornwinder duality, evaluation formulas, etc. Additionally, we initiate the study of wreath interpolation Macdonald polynomials, derive a plethystic formula for wreath $(q,t)$-Kostka coefficients, and present series solutions to the bispectral problem involving wreath Macdonald operators. Our approach is to use the eigenoperators for wreath Macdonald polynomials that have been produced from quantum toroidal and shuffle algebras.

Color rules for cyclic wreath products and semigroup algebras from projective toric varieties
We introduce the notion of "color rules" for computing class functions of $Z_k \wr S_n$, where $Z_k$ is the cyclic group of order $k$ and $S_n$ is the symmetric group on $n$ letters. Using a general sign-reversing involution and a map of order $k$, we give a combinatorial proof that the irreducible decomposition of these class functions is given by a weighted sum over semistandard tableaux in the colors. Since using two colors at once is also a color rule, we are consequently able to decompose arbitrary tensor products of representations whose characters can be computed via color rules. This method extends to class functions of $G \wr S_n$ where $G$ is a finite abelian group. We give a number of applications, including decomposing tensor powers of the defining representation, along with a combinatorial proof of the Murnaghan-Nakayama rule for $Z_k \wr S_n$. Our main application is to the study of the linear action of $Z_k \wr S_n$ on bigraded affine semigroup algebras arising from the product of projective toric varieties. In the case of the product of projective spaces, our methods give the decomposition of these bigraded characters into irreducible characters, thus deriving equivariant generalizations of Euler-Mahonian identities.
On Macdonald expansions of $q$-chromatic symmetric functions and the Stanley-Stembridge Conjecture
The Stanley-Stembridge conjecture asserts that the chromatic symmetric function of a $(3+1)$-free graph is $e$-positive. Recently, Hikita proved this conjecture by giving an explicit $e$-expansion of the Shareshian-Wachs $q$-chromatic refinement for unit interval graphs. Using the $\mathbb{A}_{q,t}$ algebra, we give an expansion of these $q$-chromatic symmetric functions into Macdonald polynomials. Upon setting $t=1$, we obtain another proof of the Stanley-Stembridge conjecture and rederive Hikita's formula. Upon setting $t=0$, we obtain an expansion into Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions.
The super nabla operator
We consider here a new operator, called ``super nabla'', which is shown to be generic among operators for which the modified Macdonald polynomials are joint eigenfunctions. All previously known Macdonald eigenoperators can readily be obtained from super nabla, including the usual nabla operator, the Delta operators, and other operators that have appeared in the literature. Thus, the super nabla operator furnishes an overall unified viewpoint on this family of operators, as well as opening up new possibilities. We prove several new identities arising from specializations of the parameters $q$ and $t$ involved in the specification of these operators, as well as unifying combinatorial interpretations.

Delta and Theta Operator Expansions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give an elementary symmetric function expansion for $MΔ_{m_γe_1}Πe_λ^{\ast}$ and $MΔ_{m_γe_1}Πs_λ^{\ast}$ when $t=1$ in terms of what we call $γ$-parking functions and lattice $γ$-parking functions. Here, $Δ_F$ and $Π$ are certain eigenoperators of the modified Macdonald basis and $M=(1-q)(1-t)$. Our main results in turn give an elementary basis expansion at $t=1$ for symmetric functions of the form $M Δ_{Fe_1} Θ_{G} J$ whenever $F$ is expanded in terms of monomials, $G$ is expanded in terms of the elementary basis, and $J$ is expanded in terms of the modified elementary basis $\{Πe_λ^\ast\}_λ$. Even the most special cases of this general Delta and Theta operator expression are significant; we highlight a few of these special cases. We end by giving an $e$-positivity conjecture for when $t$ is not specialized, proposing that our objects can also give the elementary basis expansion in the unspecialized symmetric function.
Tiered trees and Theta operators

In [Dugan-Glennon-Gunnells-Steingrimsson-2019], the authors introduce tiered trees to define combinatorial objects counting absolutely indecomposable representations of certain quivers, and torus orbits on certain homogeneous varieties. In this paper, we use Theta operators, introduced in [D'Adderio-Iraci-VandenWyngaerd-Theta-2021], to give a symmetric function formula that enumerates these trees. We then formulate a general conjecture that extends this result, a special case of which might give some insight about how to formulate a unified Delta conjecture [Haglund-Remmel-Wilson-2018].
A proof of the fermionic Theta coinvariant conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $(x_1, \dots, x_n, y_1, \dots, y_n)$ be a list of $2n$ commuting variables, $(θ_1, \dots, θ_n, ξ_1, \dots, ξ_n)$ be a list of $2n$ anticommuting variables, and $\mathbb{C}[X_n, Y_n] \otimes \wedge \{Θ_n, Ξ_n\}$ be the algebra generated by these variables. D'Adderio, Iraci, and Vanden Wyngaerd introduced the {\em Theta operators} on the ring of symmetric functions and used them to conjecture a formula for the quadruply-graded $\mathfrak{S}_n$-isomorphism type of $\mathbb{C}[X_n,Y_n] \otimes \wedge \{Θ_n, Ξ_n\}/I$ where $I$ is the ideal generated by $\mathfrak{S}_n$-invariants with vanishing constant term. We prove their conjecture in the `purely fermionic setting' obtained by setting the commuting variables equal $x_i, y_i$ equal to zero.

Stability theorems for multiplicities in graded $S_n$-modules
In this paper, we prove several stability theorems for multiplicities of naturally defined representations of symmetric groups. The first such theorem states that if we consider the diagonal action of the symmetric group $S_{m+r}$ on $k$ sets of $m+r$ variables, then the dimension of the invariants of degree $m$ is the same as the dimension of the invariants of degree $m$ for $S_{m}$ acting on $k$ sets of $m$ variables. Building on this stability, the last section looks at the Hilbert series of coinvariants of the polynomial ring in $k$ sets of $m$ variables. We address a conjecture that the Hilbert series, in degrees no more than $m$, can be computed by a truncated power series expression. Using some auxiliary results and manipulations of power series, we show that if this holds for $k$ and $m$, then the truncation gives the correct Hilbert series up to degree $m$ for $k$ sets of $n \geq m$ variables. This shows the validity of the conjecture up to certain degrees. We also provide a new equivalent conjecture regarding Gröbner bases. The second type of stability result is for Weyl modules. We prove that the dimension of the $S_{m+r}$ invariants for a Weyl module ${}_{m+r}F^λ$ (the Schur-Weyl dual of the $S_{|λ|}$ module $V^λ$) with $\left\vert λ\right\vert \leq m$ is of the same dimension as the space of $S_{m}$ invariants for ${}_{m}F^λ$. Multigraded versions of the first type of result are given, as are multigraded generalizations to non-trivial modules of symmetric groups.

Kronecker powers of harmonics, polynomial rings, and generalized principal evaluations
Published • View PublicationBIB
Our main goal is to compute the decomposition of arbitrary Kronecker powers of the Harmonics of $S_n$. To do this, we give a new way of decomposing the character for the action of $S_n$ on polynomial rings with $k$ sets of $n$ variables. There are two aspects to this decomposition. The first is algebraic, in which formulas can be given for certain restrictions from $GL_n$ to $S_n$ occurring in Schur-Weyl duality. The second is combinatorial. We give a generalization of the $comaj$ statistic on permutations which includes the $comaj$ statistic on standard tableaux. This statistic allows us to write a generalized principal evaluation for Schur functions and Gessel Fundamental quasisymmetric functions.

New identities for Theta operators
In this article, we prove a new general identity involving the Theta operators introduced by the first author and his collaborators in [D'Adderio, Iraci, Vanden Wyngaerd 2020]. From this result, we can easily deduce several new identities that have combinatorial consequences in the study of Macdonald polynomials and diagonal coinvariants. In particular, we provide a unifying framework from which we recover many identities scattered in the literature, often resulting in drastically shorter proofs.

A proof of the Theta Operator Conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
In the context of the (generalized) Delta Conjecture and its compositional form, D'Adderio, Iraci, and Wyngaerd recently stated a conjecture relating two symmetric function operators, $D_k$ and $Θ_k$. We prove this Theta Operator Conjecture, finding it as a consequence of the five-term relation of Mellit and Garsia. As a result, we find surprising ways of writing the $D_k$ operators.
$e$-Positivity Results and Conjectures
In a 2016 ArXiv posting F. Bergeron listed a variety of symmetric functions $G[X;q]$ with the property that $G[X;1+q]$ is $e$-positive. A large subvariety of his examples could be explained by the conjecture that the Dyck path LLT polynomials exhibit the same phenomenon. In this paper we list the results of computer explorations which suggest that other examples exhibit the same phenomenon. We prove two of the resulting conjectures and propose algorithms that would prove several of our conjectures. In writing this paper we have learned that similar findings have been independently discovered by Per Alexandersson.

The Delta Conjecture at $q=1$
Published • View PublicationBIB
We use a weight-preserving, sign-reversing involution to find a combinatorial expansion of $Δ_{e_k} e_n$ at $q=1$ in terms of the elementary symmetric function basis. We then use a weight-preserving bijection to prove the Delta Conjecture at $q=1$. The method of proof provides a variety of structures which can compute the inner product of $Δ_{e_k} e_n|_{q=1}$ with any symmetric function.
