On Macdonald expansions of $q$-chromatic symmetric functions and the Stanley-Stembridge Conjecture
The Stanley-Stembridge conjecture asserts that the chromatic symmetric function of a $(3+1)$-free graph is $e$-positive. Recently, Hikita proved this conjecture by giving an explicit $e$-expansion of the Shareshian-Wachs $q$-chromatic refinement for unit interval graphs. Using the $\mathbb{A}_{q,t}$ algebra, we give an expansion of these $q$-chromatic symmetric functions into Macdonald polynomials. Upon setting $t=1$, we obtain another proof of the Stanley-Stembridge conjecture and rederive Hikita's formula. Upon setting $t=0$, we obtain an expansion into Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions.
A geometric interpretation of the Delta Conjecture
We introduce a variety $Y_{n,k}$, which we call the \textit{affine $Δ$-Springer fiber}, generalizing the affine Springer fiber studied by Hikita, whose Borel-Moore homology has an $S_n$ action and a bigrading that corresponds to the Delta Conjecture symmetric function $\mathrm{rev}_q\,ωΔ'_{e_{k-1}}e_n$ under the Frobenius character map. We similarly provide a geometric interpretation for the Rational Shuffle Theorem in the integer slope case $(km,k)$. The variety $Y_{n,k}$ has a map to the affine Grassmannian whose fibers are the $Δ$-Springer fibers introduced by Levinson, Woo, and the third author. Part of our proof of our geometric realization relies on our previous work on a Schur skewing operator formula relating the Rational Shuffle Theorem to the Delta Conjecture.
Irreducible components of two-column $Δ$-Springer fibers
The $Δ$-Springer fibers $Y_{n,λ,s}$, introduced by Levinson, Woo, and the second author, generalize Springer fibers for $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{C})$ and give a geometric interpretation of the of the Delta Conjecture from algebraic combinatorics (at $t=0$). We prove that all irreducible components of the $Δ$-Springer fiber $Y_{n,n-1}=Y_{n,(1^{n-1}),n-1}$ are smooth. In fact, we prove that any intersection of irreducible components of $Y_{n,n-1}$ is a smooth Hessenberg variety which has the structure of an iterated Grassmannian fiber bundle. We then give a presentation of the singular cohomology ring of each irreducible component of $Y_{n,n-1}$ and a combinatorial formula for the Poincaré polynomial of an arbitrary union of intersections of irreducible components in terms of arm and leg statistics on Dyck paths.
A combinatorial skewing formula for the Rise Delta Theorem
We prove that the symmetric function $Δ'_{e_{k-1}}e_n$ appearing in the Delta Conjecture can be obtained from the symmetric function in the Rational Shuffle Theorem by applying a Schur skewing operator. This generalizes a formula by the first and third authors for the Delta Conjecture at $t=0$, and follows from work of Blasiak, Haiman, Morse, Pun, and Seelinger. Our main result is that we also provide a purely combinatorial proof of this skewing identity, giving a new proof of the Rise Delta Theorem from the Rational Shuffle Theorem.

Cocharge and skewing formulas for $Δ$-Springer modules and the Delta Conjecture
We prove that $ωΔ'_{e_{k}}e_n|_{t=0}$, the symmetric function in the Delta Conjecture at $t=0$, is a skewing operator applied to a Hall-Littlewood polynomial, and generalize this formula to the Frobenius series of all $Δ$-Springer modules. We use this to give an explicit Schur expansion in terms of the Lascoux-Schützenberger cocharge statistic on a new combinatorial object that we call a \textit{battery-powered tableau}. Our proof is geometric, and shows that the $Δ$-Springer varieties of Levinson, Woo, and the second author are generalized Springer fibers coming from the partial resolutions of the nilpotent cone due to Borho and MacPherson. We also give alternative combinatorial proofs of our Schur expansion for several special cases, and give conjectural skewing formulas for the $t$ and $t^2$ coefficients of $ωΔ'_{e_{k}}e_n$.

$Δ$-Springer varieties and Hall-Littlewood polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
The $Δ$-Springer varieties are a generalization of Springer fibers introduced by Levinson, Woo, and the author that have connections to the Delta Conjecture from algebraic combinatorics. We prove a positive Hall-Littlewood expansion formula for the graded Frobenius characteristic of the cohomology ring of a $Δ$-Springer variety. We do this by interpreting the Frobenius characteristic in terms of counting points over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ and partitioning the $Δ$-Springer variety into copies of Springer fibers crossed with affine spaces. As a special case, our proof method gives a geometric meaning to a formula of Haglund, Rhoades, and Shimozono for the Hall-Littlewood expansion of the symmetric function in the Delta Conjecture at $t=0$.

Orbit harmonics for the union of two orbits
Garsia and Procesi, in their study of Springer's representation, proved that the cohomology ring of a Springer fiber is isomorphic to the associated graded ring of the coordinate ring of the $S_n$ orbit of a single point in $\mathbb{C}^n$. This construction was an essential tool in their analysis of the Springer representation, and variations of it have reappeared recently in several other combinatorial and geometric contexts under the name orbit harmonics. In this article, we analyze the orbit harmonics of a union of two $S_n$ orbits. We prove that when the coordinate sums of the two orbits are different, the corresponding graded $S_n$ representation is a direct sum of two Springer representations, one of which is shifted in degree by 1.
Degenerations and multiplicity-free formulas for products of $ψ$ and $ω$ classes on $\overline{M}_{0,n}$

We consider products of $ψ$ classes and products of $ω$ classes on $\overline{M}_{0,n+3}$. For each product, we construct a flat family of subschemes of $\overline{M}_{0,n+3}$ whose general fiber is a complete intersection representing the product, and whose special fiber is a generically reduced union of boundary strata. Our construction is built up inductively as a sequence of one-parameter degenerations, using an explicit parametrized collection of hyperplane sections. Combinatorially, our construction expresses each product as a positive, multiplicity-free sum of classes of boundary strata. These are given by a combinatorial algorithm on trees we call 'slide labeling'. As a corollary, we obtain a combinatorial formula for the $κ$ classes in terms of boundary strata. For degree-$n$ products of $ω$ classes, the special fiber is a finite reduced union of (boundary) points, and its cardinality is one of the multidegrees of the corresponding embedding $Ω_n: \overline{M}_{0,n+3}\to \mathbb{P}^1\times \cdots \times \mathbb{P}^n$. In the case of the product $ω_1\cdots ω_n$, these points exhibit a connection to permutation pattern avoidance. Finally, we show that in certain cases, a prior interpretation of the multidegrees via tournaments can also be obtained by degenerations.

Springer fibers and the Delta Conjecture at $t=0$

We introduce a family of varieties $Y_{n,λ,s}$, which we call the \emph{$Δ$-Springer varieties}, that generalize the type A Springer fibers. We give an explicit presentation of the cohomology ring $H^*(Y_{n,λ,s})$ and show that there is a symmetric group action on this ring generalizing the Springer action on the cohomology of a Springer fiber. In particular, the top cohomology groups are induction products of Specht modules with trivial modules. The $λ=(1^k)$ case of this construction gives a compact geometric realization for the expression in the Delta Conjecture at $t=0$. Finally, we generalize results of De Concini and Procesi on the scheme of diagonal nilpotent matrices by constructing an ind-variety $Y_{n,λ}$ whose cohomology ring is isomorphic to the coordinate ring of the scheme-theoretic intersection of an Eisenbud--Saltman rank variety and diagonal matrices.
Lazy tournaments and multidegrees of a projective embedding of $\overline{M}_{0,n}$

We provide a new geometric interpretation of the multidegrees of the (iterated) Kapranov embedding $Φ_n:\overline{M}_{0,n+3}\hookrightarrow \mathbb{P}^1\times \mathbb{P}^2\times \cdots \times \mathbb{P}^n$, where $\overline{M}_{0,n+3}$ is the moduli space of stable genus $0$ curves with $n+3$ marked points. We enumerate the multidegrees by disjoint sets of boundary points of $\overline{M}_{0,n+3}$ via a combinatorial algorithm on trivalent trees that we call a lazy tournament. These sets are compatible with the forgetting maps used to derive the recursion for the multidegrees proven in 2020 by Gillespie, Cavalieri, and Monin. The lazy tournament points are easily seen to total $(2n-1)!!=(2n-1)\cdot (2n-3) \cdots 5 \cdot 3 \cdot 1$, giving a natural proof of the fact that the total degree of $Φ_n$ is the odd double factorial. This fact was first proven using an insertion algorithm on certain parking functions, and we additionally give a bijection to those parking functions.

Ordered set partitions, Garsia-Procesi modules, and rank varieties
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc., 374 (2021), pp. 2609-2660 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a family of ideals $I_{n,λ,s}$ in $\mathbb{Q}[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ for $λ$ a partition of $k\leq n$ and an integer $s \geq \ell(λ)$. This family contains both the Tanisaki ideals $I_λ$ and the ideals $I_{n,k}$ of Haglund-Rhoades-Shimozono as special cases. We study the corresponding quotient rings $R_{n,λ,s}$ as symmetric group modules. When $n=k$ and $s$ is arbitrary, we recover the Garsia-Procesi modules, and when $λ=(1^k)$ and $s=k$, we recover the generalized coinvariant algebras of Haglund-Rhoades-Shimozono. We give a monomial basis for $R_{n,λ,s}$, unifying the monomial bases studied by Garsia-Procesi and Haglund-Rhoades-Shimozono, and realize the $S_n$-module structure of $R_{n,λ,s}$ in terms of an action on $(n,λ,s)$-ordered set partitions. We also prove formulas for the Hilbert series and graded Frobenius characteristic of $R_{n,λ,s}$. We then connect our work with Eisenbud-Saltman rank varieties using results of Weyman. As an application of our work, we give a monomial basis, Hilbert series formula, and graded Frobenius characteristic formula for the coordinate ring of the scheme-theoretic intersection of a rank variety with diagonal matrices.

Labeled binary trees, subarrangements of the Catalan arrangements, and Schur positivity
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 1995, the first author introduced a multivariate generating function {$G$} that tracks the distribution of ascents and descents in labeled binary trees. In addition to proving that $G$ is symmetric, he conjectured that $G$ is Schur positive. We prove this conjecture by expanding $G$ positively in terms of ribbon Schur functions. We obtain this expansion using a weight-preserving bijection whose inverse is inspired by the Push-Glide algorithm of Préville-Ratelle and Viennot. In fact, this weight-preserving bijection allows us to establish a stronger version of the first author's conjecture showing that the generating function restricted to labeled binary trees with a fixed canopy is still Schur positive. We also discuss applications in the setting of hyperplane arrangements. We show that a certain specialization of $G$ equals the Frobenius characteristic of the natural $\mathfrak{S}_n$-action on regions of the semiorder arrangement, which we then expand in terms of {the Frobenius characteristics} of Foulkes characters. We also construct an $\mathfrak{S}_n$-action on regions of the Linial arrangement using a set of trees studied by Bernardi, and subsequently compute the character of this action by employing Lagrange inversion. The resulting expression generalizes Postnikov's formula for the number of regions in the Linial arrangement. As a final application, we prove $γ$-nonnegativity for the distribution of the number of right edges over local binary search trees.
