When are tropical multidegrees positive?
We study the positivity of the tropical multidegrees of a tropical variety contained in a product of real vector spaces. These multidegrees are obtained by stably intersecting the tropical variety with pullbacks of positive tropical divisors. We introduce projection-purity and facet-selectability, two conditions under which positivity is determined by the dimensions of the natural projections, and the support of the tropical multidegrees is precisely the set of lattice points of a polymatroid base polytope. This extends He's theorem for translation-admissible tropical varieties. We also show that these conditions alone do not force the corresponding tropical volume polynomial to be Lorentzian. By contrast, for the augmented Bergman fan of any polymatroid, the positive multidegrees are supported precisely on the lattice points of the polymatroid base polytope, and the tropical volume polynomial is Lorentzian for every sequence of positive tropical divisors.
Varieties of Lines in 3-Space
We consider configurations of lines in 3-space with incidences prescribed by a graph. This defines a subvariety in a product of Grassmannians. Leveraging a connection with rigidity theory in the plane, for any graph, we determine the dimension of the incidence variety and characterize when it is irreducible or a complete intersection. We study its multidegree and the family of Schubert problems it encodes. Our spanning-tree coordinates enable efficient symbolic computations. We also provide numerical irreducible decompositions for incidence varieties with up to eight lines. These constructions with lines play a key role in the Landau analysis of scattering amplitudes in particle physics.
Standard multigraded Hibi rings and Cartwright-Sturmfels ideals
In this paper, we introduce standard multigradings on Hibi rings, which are algebras arising from posets. We show that any standard multigrading on a Hibi ring that makes its defining ideal (called the Hibi ideal) homogeneous is induced by a chain of the underlying poset. After that, we calculate the multigraded Hilbert series of Hibi rings by generalizing the theory of $P$-partition and we compute the multidegree polynomials of Hibi rings. Furthermore, we characterize Hibi ideals that are Cartwright-Sturmfels ideals.
Algebra and geometry of ASM weak order
Much of modern Schubert calculus is centered on Schubert varieties in the complete flag variety and on their classes in its integral cohomology ring. Under the Borel isomorphism, these classes are represented by distinguished polynomials called Schubert polynomials, introduced by Lascoux and Schützenberger.
Knutson and Miller showed that Schubert polynomials are multidegrees of matrix Schubert varieties, affine varieties introduced by Fulton, which are closely related to Schubert varieties. Many roads to studying Schubert polynomials pass through unions and intersections of matrix Schubert varieties. The third author showed that the natural indexing objects of arbitrary intersections of matrix Schubert varieties are alternating sign matrices (ASMs). Every ASM variety is expressible as a union of matrix Schubert varieties.
Many fundamental algebro-geometric invariants (e.g., codimension, degree, and Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity) are well understood combinatorially for matrix Schubert varieties, substantially via the combinatorics of strong Bruhat order on $S_n$. The extension of strong order to ASM(n), the set of $n \times n$ ASMs, has so far not borne as much algebro-geometric fruit for ASM varieties.
Hamaker and Reiner proposed an extension of weak Bruhat order from $S_n$ to ASM(n), which they studied from a combinatorial perspective. In the present paper, we place this work on algebro-geometric footing. We use weak order on ASMs to give a characterization of codimension of ASM varieties. We also show that weak order operators commute with K-theoretic divided difference operators and that they satisfy the same derivative formula that facilitated the first general combinatorial computation of Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity of matrix Schubert varieties. Finally, we build from these results to generalizations that apply to arbitrary unions of matrix Schubert varieties.
Hyperplane arrangements and the Gauss map of a pencil
We show that the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of a central hyperplane arrangement $\mathcal A$, coincide with the multidegrees of the Gauss map of a pencil of hypersurfaces naturally associated to $\mathcal A$. As a consequence, we obtain a proof of the Heron-Rota-Welsh conjecture for matroids representable over a field of characteristic zero.
Fine multidegrees, universal Grobner bases, and matrix Schubert varieties
We give a criterion for a collection of polynomials to be a universal Gröbner basis for an ideal in terms of the multidegree of the closure of the corresponding affine variety in $(\mathbb{P}^1)^N$. This criterion can be used to give simple proofs of several existing results on universal Gröbner bases. We introduce fine Schubert polynomials, which record the multidegrees of the closures of matrix Schubert varieties in $(\mathbb{P}^1)^{n^2}$. We compute the fine Schubert polynomials of permutations $w$ where the coefficients of the Schubert polynomials of $w$ and $w^{-1}$ are all either 0 or 1, and we use this to give a universal Gröbner basis for the ideal of the matrix Schubert variety of such a permutation.
Multidegrees of binomial edge ideals
Let $G$ be a simple graph with binomial edge ideal $J_G$. We prove how to calculate the multidegree of $J_G$ based on combinatorial properties of $G$. In particular, we study the set $S_{\min}(G)$ defined as the collection of subsets of vertices whose prime ideals have minimum codimension. We provide results which assist in determining $S_{\min}(G)$, then calculate $S_{\min}(G)$ for star, horned complete, barbell, cycle, wheel, and friendship graphs, and use the main result of the paper to obtain the multidegrees of their binomial edge ideals.
Scarf complexes of graphs and their powers
Every multigraded free resolution of a monomial ideal I contains the Scarf multidegrees of I. We say I has a Scarf resolution if the Scarf multidegrees are sufficient to describe a minimal free resolution of I. The main question of this paper is which graphs G have edge ideal I(G) with a Scarf resolution? We show that I(G) has a Scarf resolution if and only if G is a gap-free forest. We also classify connected graphs for which all powers of I(G) have Scarf resolutions. Along the way, we give a concrete description of the Scarf complex of any forest. For a general graph, we give a recursive construction for its Scarf complex based on Scarf complexes of induced subgraphs.
Dao numbers and the asymptotic behaviour of fullness
In the present paper, we study the Dao numbers $\mathfrak{d}_1(I),\mathfrak{d}_2(I)$ and $\mathfrak{d}_3(I)$ of an ideal $I$ of a Noetherian local ring $(R,\mathfrak{m},K)$ or a standard graded Noetherian $K$-algebra. They are defined as the smallest $\ell\ge0$ such that $I\mathfrak{m}^k$ is $\mathfrak{m}$-full, full, weakly $\mathfrak{m}$-full, respectively, for all $k\ge\ell$. We provide general bounds for the Dao numbers in terms of the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of certain modules over the Rees algebra $\mathcal{R}(\mathfrak{m})$. If $R$ is a Koszul algebra, we prove that the Dao numbers are less or equal to $\text{reg}_{\text{gr}_\mathfrak{m}(R)}\text{gr}_\mathfrak{m}(I)$, where $\text{gr}_\mathfrak{m}(I)$ is the associated graded module of $I$. Finally, for monomial ideals, we combinatorially bound the Dao numbers in terms of asymptotic linear quotients and bounding multidegrees.
Kapranov degrees
The moduli space of stable rational curves with marked points has two distinguished families of maps: the forgetful maps, given by forgetting some of the markings, and the Kapranov maps, given by complete linear series of $ψ$-classes. The collection of all these maps embeds the moduli space into a product of projective spaces. We call the multidegrees of this embedding ``Kapranov degrees,'' which include as special cases the work of Witten, Silversmith, Gallet--Grasegger--Schicho, Castravet--Tevelev, Postnikov, Cavalieri--Gillespie--Monin, and Gillespie--Griffins--Levinson. We establish, in terms of a combinatorial matching condition, upper bounds for Kapranov degrees and a characterization of their positivity. The positivity characterization answers a question of Silversmith and gives a new proof of Laman's theorem characterizing generically rigid graphs in the plane. We achieve this by proving a recursive formula for Kapranov degrees and by using tools from the theory of error correcting codes.

We consider products of $ψ$ classes and products of $ω$ classes on $\overline{M}_{0,n+3}$. For each product, we construct a flat family of subschemes of $\overline{M}_{0,n+3}$ whose general fiber is a complete intersection representing the product, and whose special fiber is a generically reduced union of boundary strata. Our construction is built up inductively as a sequence of one-parameter degenerations, using an explicit parametrized collection of hyperplane sections. Combinatorially, our construction expresses each product as a positive, multiplicity-free sum of classes of boundary strata. These are given by a combinatorial algorithm on trees we call 'slide labeling'. As a corollary, we obtain a combinatorial formula for the $κ$ classes in terms of boundary strata.
For degree-$n$ products of $ω$ classes, the special fiber is a finite reduced union of (boundary) points, and its cardinality is one of the multidegrees of the corresponding embedding $Ω_n: \overline{M}_{0,n+3}\to \mathbb{P}^1\times \cdots \times \mathbb{P}^n$. In the case of the product $ω_1\cdots ω_n$, these points exhibit a connection to permutation pattern avoidance. Finally, we show that in certain cases, a prior interpretation of the multidegrees via tournaments can also be obtained by degenerations.

We prove that double Schubert polynomials have the Saturated Newton Polytope property. This settles a conjecture by Monical, Tokcan and Yong. Our ideas are motivated by the theory of multidegrees. We introduce a notion of standardization of ideals that enables us to study non-standard multigradings. This allows us to show that the support of the multidegree polynomial of each Cohen-Macaulay prime ideal, and in particular, that of each Schubert determinantal ideal is a discrete polymatroid.

We provide a new geometric interpretation of the multidegrees of the (iterated) Kapranov embedding $Φ_n:\overline{M}_{0,n+3}\hookrightarrow \mathbb{P}^1\times \mathbb{P}^2\times \cdots \times \mathbb{P}^n$, where $\overline{M}_{0,n+3}$ is the moduli space of stable genus $0$ curves with $n+3$ marked points. We enumerate the multidegrees by disjoint sets of boundary points of $\overline{M}_{0,n+3}$ via a combinatorial algorithm on trivalent trees that we call a lazy tournament. These sets are compatible with the forgetting maps used to derive the recursion for the multidegrees proven in 2020 by Gillespie, Cavalieri, and Monin.
The lazy tournament points are easily seen to total $(2n-1)!!=(2n-1)\cdot (2n-3) \cdots 5 \cdot 3 \cdot 1$, giving a natural proof of the fact that the total degree of $Φ_n$ is the odd double factorial. This fact was first proven using an insertion algorithm on certain parking functions, and we additionally give a bijection to those parking functions.

This paper is devoted to the study of multigraded algebras and multigraded linear series. For an $\mathbb{N}^s$-graded algebra $A$, we define and study its volume function $F_A:\mathbb{N}_+^s\to \mathbb{R}$, which computes the asymptotics of the Hilbert function of $A$. We relate the volume function $F_A$ to the volume of the fibers of the global Newton-Okounkov body $Δ(A)$ of $A$. Unlike the classical case of standard multigraded algebras, the volume function $F_A$ is not a polynomial in general. However, in the case when the algebra $A$ has a decomposable grading, we show that the volume function $F_A$ is a polynomial with non-negative coefficients. We then define mixed multiplicities in this case and provide a full characterization for their positivity. Furthermore, we apply our results on multigraded algebras to multigraded linear series.
Our work recovers and unifies recent developments on mixed multiplicities. In particular, we recover results on the existence of mixed multiplicities for (not necessarily Noetherian) graded families of ideals and on the positivity of the multidegrees of multiprojective varieties.

Let $k$ be an arbitrary field, $P = P_k^{m_1} \times_k \cdots \times_k P_k^{m_p}$ be a multiprojective space over $k$, and $X \subseteq P$ be a closed subscheme of $P$. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the positivity of the multidegrees of $X$. As a consequence of our methods, we show that when $X$ is irreducible, the support of multidegrees forms a discrete algebraic polymatroid. In algebraic terms, we characterize the positivity of the mixed multiplicities of a standard multigraded algebra over an Artinian local ring, and we apply this to the positivity of mixed multiplicities of ideals. Furthermore, we use our results to recover several results in the literature in the context of combinatorial algebraic geometry.
Projective Embeddings of $\overline{M}_{0,n}$ and Parking Functions
The moduli space $\overline{M}_{0,n}$ may be embedded into the product of projective spaces $\mathbb{P}^1\times \mathbb{P}^2\times \cdots \times \mathbb{P}^{n-3}$, using a combination of the Kapranov map $|ψ_n|:\overline{M}_{0,n}\to \mathbb{P}^{n-3}$ and the forgetful maps $π_i:\overline{M}_{0,i}\to \overline{M}_{0,i-1}$. We give an explicit combinatorial formula for the multidegree of this embedding in terms of certain parking functions of height $n-3$. We use this combinatorial interpretation to show that the total degree of the embedding (thought of as the projectivization of its cone in $\mathbb{A}^2\times \mathbb{A}^3\cdots \times \mathbb{A}^{n-2}$) is equal to $(2(n-3)-1)!!=(2n-7)(2n-9) \cdots(5)(3)(1)$. As a consequence, we also obtain a new combinatorial interpretation for the odd double factorial.
Prism tableaux for alternating sign matrix varieties
A prism tableau is a set of reverse semistandard tableaux, each positioned within an ambient grid. Prism tableaux were introduced to provide a formula for the Schubert polynomials of A. Lascoux and M.P. Schützenberger. This formula directly generalizes the well known expression for Schur polynomials as a sum over semistandard tableaux. Alternating sign matrix varieties generalize the matrix Schubert varieties of W. Fulton. We use prism tableaux to give a formula for the multidegree of an alternating sign matrix variety.

We study the partially ordered set $P(a_1,\ldots, a_n)$ of all multidegrees $(b_1,\dots,b_n)$ of monomials $x_1^{b_1}\cdots x_n^{b_n}$ which properly divide $x_1^{a_1}\cdots x_n^{a_n}$. We prove that the order complex $Δ(P(a_1,\dots,a_n))$ of $P(a_1,\ldots a_n)$ is (non-pure) shellable, by showing that the order dual of $P(a_1,\ldots,a_n)$ is $\mathrm{CL}$-shellable. Along the way, we exhibit the poset $P(4,4)$ as a new example of a poset with $\mathrm{CL}$-shellable order dual that is not $\mathrm{CL}$-shellable itself. For $n = 2$ we provide the rank of all homology groups of the order complex $Δ\left( P(a_1,a_2) \right)$. Furthermore, we give a succinct formula for the Euler characteristic of $Δ\left( P(a_1,a_2) \right)$.

We provide combinatorial formulas for the multidegree and K-polynomial of an arbitrarily oriented type A quiver locus. These formulas are generalizations of three of Knutson-Miller-Shimozono's formulas from the equioriented setting; in particular, we prove the K-theoretic component formula conjectured by Buch and Rimányi.
A distributed prime sieving algorithm based on Scheduling by Multiple Edge Reversal
This paper presents a new distributed approach for generating all prime numbers in a given interval of integers. From Eratosthenes, who elaborated the first prime sieve (more than 2000 years ago), to the current generation of parallel computers, which have permitted to reach larger bounds on the interval or to obtain previous results in a shorter time, prime numbers generation still represents an attractive domain of research and plays a central role in cryptography. We propose a fully distributed algorithm for finding all primes in the interval $[2\ldots, n]$, based on the \emph{wheel sieve} and the SMER (\emph{Scheduling by Multiple Edge Reversal}) multigraph dynamics. Given a multigraph $\mathcal{M}$ of arbitrary topology, having $N$ nodes, a SMER-driven system is defined by the number of directed edges (arcs) between any two nodes of $\mathcal{M}$, and by the global period length of all "arc reversals" in $\mathcal{M}$. The new prime number generation method inherits the distributed and parallel nature of SMER and requires at most $n + \lfloor \sqrt{n}\rfloor$ time steps. The message complexity achieves at most $nΔ_N + \lfloor \sqrt{n}\rfloor Δ_N$, where $1\le Δ_N\le N - 1$ is the maximal multidegree of $\mathcal{M}$, and the maximal amount of memory space required per process is $\mathcal{O}(n)$ bits.
