Topology and Euler characteristics of tropical varieties
We study Euler characteristics of tropical subvarieties of tropical abelian varieties. We prove that every H-regular subvariety, locally modeled on tropicalizations of sufficiently well-behaved very affine varieties, has nonnegative signed Euler characteristic. This gives a tropical analogue of a theorem of Green-Lazarsfeld for subvarieties of complex abelian varieties. The main input is a local vanishing theorem for H-regular tropical fans, which also yields a Lefschetz-type theorem for affine H-regular tropical varieties. We further show that the signed Euler characteristic inequality fails for general tropical subvarieties of tropical abelian varieties, and we construct a 3-dimensional tropical fan whose link is not homotopy equivalent to a bouquet of 2-spheres.
Non-affine Families of 8 x 8 Complex Hadamard Matrices
Six non-affine 3-parameter families of complex Hadamard matrices of order 8 are presented. These families contain Hadamard matrices that are not equivalent to any previously known Hadamard matrices in the literature. Each family arises from unimodular points of an affine variety defined by palindromic polynomials. The families are given as an image of a function that solves the corresponding system of polynomials on a domain that guarantees unimodularity of the solutions
Some algebraic properties of ASM varieties

Fulton's matrix Schubert varieties are affine varieties that arise in the study of Schubert calculus in the complete flag variety. Weigandt showed that arbitrary intersections of matrix Schubert varieties, now called ASM varieties, are indexed by alternating sign matrices (ASMs), objects with a long history in enumerative combinatorics. It is very difficult to assess Cohen-Macaulayness of ASM varieties or to compute their codimension, though these properties are well understood for matrix Schubert varieties due to work of Fulton. In this paper we study these properties of ASM varieties with a focus on the relationship between a pair of ASMs and their direct sum. We also consider ASM pattern avoidance from an algebro-geometric perspective.
A positive Siegel theorem: Dynkin friezes and positive Mordell-Schinzel
We determine the number of positive integral points on $n$-dimensional affine varieties associated to arbitrary $n \times n$ generalized Cartan matrices. An application to the theory of cluster algebras and combinatorics is the resolution of the Fontaine-Plamondon conjecture, which says that there are exactly $4400$ and $26952$ positive integral friezes of type $E_7$ and $E_8$ respectively. An application to number theory refines and generalizes theorems of Mohanty, Mordell, and Schinzel to the positive integers and higher dimensions by exhibiting examples of Diophantine equations $xyz = G(x, y)$ and $xyzw = G(x, y, z)$ of every degree greater than $3$ with infinitely many positive integral solutions.
Algebra and geometry of ASM weak order
Much of modern Schubert calculus is centered on Schubert varieties in the complete flag variety and on their classes in its integral cohomology ring. Under the Borel isomorphism, these classes are represented by distinguished polynomials called Schubert polynomials, introduced by Lascoux and Schützenberger.
Knutson and Miller showed that Schubert polynomials are multidegrees of matrix Schubert varieties, affine varieties introduced by Fulton, which are closely related to Schubert varieties. Many roads to studying Schubert polynomials pass through unions and intersections of matrix Schubert varieties. The third author showed that the natural indexing objects of arbitrary intersections of matrix Schubert varieties are alternating sign matrices (ASMs). Every ASM variety is expressible as a union of matrix Schubert varieties.
Many fundamental algebro-geometric invariants (e.g., codimension, degree, and Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity) are well understood combinatorially for matrix Schubert varieties, substantially via the combinatorics of strong Bruhat order on $S_n$. The extension of strong order to ASM(n), the set of $n \times n$ ASMs, has so far not borne as much algebro-geometric fruit for ASM varieties.
Hamaker and Reiner proposed an extension of weak Bruhat order from $S_n$ to ASM(n), which they studied from a combinatorial perspective. In the present paper, we place this work on algebro-geometric footing. We use weak order on ASMs to give a characterization of codimension of ASM varieties. We also show that weak order operators commute with K-theoretic divided difference operators and that they satisfy the same derivative formula that facilitated the first general combinatorial computation of Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity of matrix Schubert varieties. Finally, we build from these results to generalizations that apply to arbitrary unions of matrix Schubert varieties.
Fine multidegrees, universal Grobner bases, and matrix Schubert varieties
We give a criterion for a collection of polynomials to be a universal Gröbner basis for an ideal in terms of the multidegree of the closure of the corresponding affine variety in $(\mathbb{P}^1)^N$. This criterion can be used to give simple proofs of several existing results on universal Gröbner bases. We introduce fine Schubert polynomials, which record the multidegrees of the closures of matrix Schubert varieties in $(\mathbb{P}^1)^{n^2}$. We compute the fine Schubert polynomials of permutations $w$ where the coefficients of the Schubert polynomials of $w$ and $w^{-1}$ are all either 0 or 1, and we use this to give a universal Gröbner basis for the ideal of the matrix Schubert variety of such a permutation.
Hyperplane Arrangements in the Grassmannian
The Euler characteristic of a very affine variety encodes the algebraic complexity of solving likelihood (or scattering) equations on this variety. We study this quantity for the Grassmannian with $d$ hyperplane sections removed. We provide a combinatorial formula, and explain how to compute this Euler characteristic in practice, both symbolically and numerically. Our particular focus is on generic hyperplane sections and on Schubert divisors. We also consider special Schubert arrangements relevant for physics. We study both the complex and the real case.
The Two Lives of the Grassmannian
The real Grassmannian is both a projective variety (via Plücker coordinates) and an affine variety (via orthogonal projections). We connect these two representations, and we develop the commutative algebra of the latter variety. We introduce the squared Grassmannian, and we study applications to determinantal point processes in statistics.
Towards the classification of finite-dimensional diagonally graded commutative algebras
Any finite-dimensional commutative (associative) graded algebra with all nonzero homogeneous subspaces one-dimensional is defined by a symmetric coefficient matrix. This algebraic structure gives a basic kind of $A$-graded algebras originally studied by Arnold. In this paper, we call them diagonally graded commutative algebras (DGCAs) and verify that the isomorphism classes of DGCAs of dimension $\leq 7$ over an arbitrary field are in bijection with the equivalence classes consisting of coefficient matrices with the same distribution of nonzero entries, while dramatically there may be infinitely many isomorphism classes of dimension $n$ corresponding to one equivalence class of coefficient matrices when $n\geq 8$.
Furthermore, we adopt the Skjelbred-Sund method of central extensions to study the isomorphism classes of DGCAs, and associate any DGCA with a undirected simple graph to explicitly describe its corresponding second (graded) commutative cohomology group as an affine variety.
Positive del Pezzo Geometry
Real, complex, and tropical algebraic geometry join forces in a new branch of mathematical physics called positive geometry. We develop the positive geometry of del Pezzo surfaces and their moduli spaces, viewed as very affine varieties. Their connected components are derived from polyhedral spaces with Weyl group symmetries. We study their canonical forms and scattering amplitudes, and we solve the likelihood equations.

For several classical nonnegative integer functions, we investigate if they are members of the counting complexity class #P or not. We prove #P membership in surprising cases, and in other cases we prove non-membership, relying on standard complexity assumptions or on oracle separations.
We initiate the study of the polynomial closure properties of #P on affine varieties, i.e., if all problem instances satisfy algebraic constraints. This is directly linked to classical combinatorial proofs of algebraic identities and inequalities. We investigate #TFNP and obtain oracle separations that prove the strict inclusion of #P in all standard syntactic subclasses of #TFNP-1.
Orientation of alcoves in affine Weyl groups
Let $W$ be an irreducible Weyl group and $W_a$ its affine Weyl group. In a previous work the author introduced an affine variety $\widehat{X}_{W_a}$, called the Shi variety of $W_a$, whose integral points are in bijection with $W_a$. The set of irreducible components of $\widehat{X}_{W_a}$ provided results at the intersection of group theory, combinatorics and geometry. In this article we express the notion of orientation of alcoves in terms of the first group of cohomogoly of $W$ and in terms of the irreducible components of the Shi variety. We also provide modular equations in terms of Shi coefficients that describe efficiently the property of having the same orientation.

Matrix Schubert varieties are affine varieties arising in the Schubert calculus of the complete flag variety. We give a formula for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of matrix Schubert varieties, answering a question of Jenna Rajchgot. We follow her proposed strategy of studying the highest-degree homogeneous parts of Grothendieck polynomials, which we call Castelnuovo-Mumford polynomials. In addition to the regularity formula, we obtain formulas for the degrees of all Castelnuovo-Mumford polynomials and for their leading terms, as well as a complete description of when two Castelnuovo-Mumford polynomials agree up to scalar multiple. The degree of the Grothendieck polynomial is a new permutation statistic which we call the Rajchgot index; we develop the properties of Rajchgot index and relate it to major index and to weak order.

Computing all critical points of a monomial on a very affine variety is a fundamental task in algebraic statistics, particle physics and other fields. The number of critical points is known as the maximum likelihood (ML) degree. When the variety is smooth, it coincides with the Euler characteristic. We introduce degeneration techniques that are inspired by the soft limits in CEGM theory, and we answer several questions raised in the physics literature. These pertain to bounded regions in discriminantal arrangements and to moduli spaces of point configurations. We present theory and practise, connecting complex geometry, tropical combinatorics, and numerical nonlinear algebra.

Let $W$ be a irreducible Weyl group and $W_a$ its affine Weyl group. In a previous article the author defined an affine variety $\widehat{X}_{W_a}$, called the Shi variety of $W_a$, whose integral points are in bijection with $W_a$. The set of irreducible components of $\widehat{X}_{W_a}$, denoted $H^0(\widehat{X}_{W_a})$, is of some interest and we show in this article that $H^0(\widehat{X}_{W_a})$ has a structure of semidistributive lattice.
Relative Rank and Regularization

We introduce a new concept of rank - relative rank associated to a filtered collection of polynomials. When the filtration is trivial our relative rank coincides with Schmidt rank (also called strength). We also introduce the notion of relative bias. The main result of the paper is a relation between these two quantities over finite fields (as a special case we obtain a new proof of the results in arXiv:1902.09830). This relation allows us to get an accurate estimate for the number of points on an affine variety given by a collection of polynomials which is high relative rank (Lemma 3.2). The key advantage of relative rank is that it allows one to perform an efficient regularization procedure which is polynomial in the initial number of polynomials (the regularization process with Schmidt rank is far worse than tower exponential). The main result allows us to replace Schmidt rank with relative rank in many key applications in combinatorics, algebraic geometry and algebra. For example, we prove that any collection of polynomials $\mathcal{P}=(P_i)_{i=1}^c$ of degrees $\le d$ in a polynomial ring over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $>d$ is contained in an ideal $\mathcal{I}(\mathcal{Q})$, generated by a collection $\mathcal{Q}$ of polynomials of degrees $\le d$ which form a regular sequence, and $\mathcal{Q}$ is of size $\le A c^{A}$, where $A=A(d)$ is independent of the number of variables.

Let $W_a$ be an affine Weyl group with corresponding finite root system $Φ$. In \cite{JYS1} Jian-Yi Shi characterized each element $w \in W_a$ by a $ Φ^+$-tuple of integers $(k(w,α))_{α\in Φ^+}$ subject to certain conditions. In \cite{NC1} a new interpretation of the coefficients $k(w,α)$ is given. This description led us to define an affine variety $\widehat{X}_{W_a}$, called the Shi variety of $W_a$, whose integral points are in bijection with $W_a$. It turns out that this variety has more than one irreducible component, and the set of these components, denoted $H^0(\widehat{X}_{W_a})$, admits many interesting properties. In particular the group $W_a$ acts on it. In this article we show that the set of irreducible components of $\widehat{X}_{W(\widetilde{A}_n)}$ is in bijection with the conjugacy class of $(1~2~\cdots~n+1) \in W(A_n) = S_{n+1}$. We also compute the action of $W(A_n)$ on $H^0(\widehat{X}_{W(\widetilde{A}_n)})$.

Let $W$ be an irreducible Weyl group and $W_a$ its affine Weyl group. In this article we show that there exists a bijection between $W_a$ and the integral points of an affine variety, denoted $\widehat{X}_{W_a}$, which we call the Shi variety of $W_a$. In order to do so, we use Jian-Yi Shi's characterization of alcoves in affine Weyl groups. We then study this variety further. We highlight combinatorial properties of the irreducible components of $\widehat{X}_{W_a}$ and we show how they are related to a fundamental parallelepiped $P_{\mathcal{H}}$.
Semi-inverted linear spaces and an analogue of the broken circuit complex

The image of a linear space under inversion of some coordinates is an affine variety whose structure is governed by an underlying hyperplane arrangement. In this paper, we generalize work by Proudfoot and Speyer to show that circuit polynomials form a universal Groebner basis for the ideal of polynomials vanishing on this variety. The proof relies on degenerations to the Stanley-Reisner ideal of a simplicial complex determined by the underlying matroid. If the linear space is real, then the semi-inverted linear space is also an example of a hyperbolic variety, meaning that all of its intersection points with a large family of linear spaces are real.

A general vanishing result for the first cohomology group of affine smooth complex varieties with values in rank one local systems is established. This is applied to the determination of the monodromy action on the first cohomology group of the Milnor fiber of some line arrangements, including the monomial arrangement and the exceptional reflection arrangement of type $G_{31}$.
