Nef Cones of Hilbert Schemes of Orthogonal Grassmannians
We show the number of connected components of the Hilbert scheme of orthogonal Grassmannians under certain condition, and use this result to describe the geometry of the Hilbert scheme. Subsequently, we determine the Nef cone of the Hilbert scheme by identifying curves dual to the generators of its Neron-Severi group. Our results generalize those of ordinary Grassmannians by Seong, and our approach adapts his proof technique alongside relevant Schubert calculus.

Formulas for Koornwinder polynomials
This paper provides formulas for Koornwinder polynomials in analogy with the creation formula, the alcove walk formula and the non-attacking fillings formula for the type $GL_n$ Macdonald polynomials. We state the creation formula in terms of the divided-difference operators used in Schubert calculus, and we use a box-greedy reduced word to reformulate the alcove walk formula in terms of uncompressed set-valued tableaux. Then two types of compression, ``around-the-end compression'' and ``across-the-$0$-gap compression'', are used to derive a formula for Koornwinder polynomials in terms of compressed set-valued tableaux. Throughout we work in the full generality of relative Koornwinder polynomials, which are the analogues of the permuted basement Macdonald polynomials used in the type $GL_n$ case.

Equivariant Schubert Calculus for Inverse Grassmannian Permutations
We give a Graham-positive expansion for the product of two double Schubert polynomials indexed by two inverse Grassmannian permutations. Surprisingly, the nonzero structure constants are double Schubert polynomials in two disjoint sets of equivariant variables. We also give a positive expansion for the product of two single Schubert polynomials indexed by a $321$-avoiding permutation (e.g., a Grassmannian permutation) and an inverse Grassmannian permutation. Unexpectedly, the nonzero structure constants are Edelman--Greene coefficients.
On Two Algebraic Realizations of Schubert Calculus
Schubert calculus on complex Grassmannians can be played by means of differential operators acting on Schur polynomials or Vertex Operators acting on exterior algebras. In this paper we develop this point of view systematically and complement it with a parallel exterior-algebra formalism, leading to what we call, respectively, the \emph{bosonic} and the \emph{fermionic} Schubert calculus. The two alluded realizations are related by (a finite type version of) the boson--fermion correspondence, thereby providing a unified framework connecting Schubert calculus and integrals on the Grassmannian, symmetric functions, exterior algebras and the representation theory of symmetric groups.

Equivariant Quantum Cohomology of Grassmannians via the Clifford algebra
We construct an explicit equivariant quantum Satake map for Grassmannians, which enables us to express their torus-equivariant quantum cohomology in terms of that of projective space. We then consider the exterior algebra of the latter, which admits a canonical identification with a Clifford algebra. We describe the resulting action in several complementary ways: first, from a geometric perspective via push-pull maps, and second, in terms of the shuffle product, which also arises in the simplest cohomological Hall algebra associated with the $A_1$-quiver. Exploiting the Clifford algebra structure, we derive new recurrence relations among equivariant Gromov-Witten invariants, yielding a new method for their computation in terms of Wick's Theorem. As an application, we provide combinatorial proofs of Graham positivity for both equivariant quantum Pieri rules, and in one case extend these results to quantum triple Schubert calculus.

Formalizing $A_1^{(1)}$ Curve Neighborhoods in Lean 4
Combinatorial curve neighborhoods are somewhat foundational when setting up the quantum Schubert calculus for affine flag manifolds. In the specific case of type $A_1^{(1)}$, you can encode these neighborhoods entirely within the moment graph of the infinite dihedral group $D_\infty$. Building on the framework developed by Mihalcea and Norton, this paper presents a complete, axiom-free formalization of these combinatorial curve neighborhoods in Lean 4. Rather than just wrapping mathematical statements, we formalized $D_\infty$ directly as a Coxeter system to explicitly compute length functions and degree maps. Reachable sets are defined through edge chains bounded by specific degrees, and we ultimately characterize the curve neighborhood by the maximal vertices inside these sets. The core effort here lies in formally verifying the explicit combinatorial formulas for curve neighborhoods of arbitrary elements. Interestingly, by restricting our search space to finite sets, we also managed to extract a fully computable version of these neighborhoods.

Tilted Richardson Varieties
The study of the flag variety $\mathrm{Fl}_n$ and its subvarieties, including Schubert and Richardson varieties, plays a fundamental role in algebraic geometry and algebraic combinatorics. In this paper, we introduce and develop the theory of tilted Richardson varieties $\mathrm{T}_{u,v}$, a new family of subvarieties of the flag variety that provides a geometric framework for the quantum Bruhat graphs. These varieties are defined for all pairs of permutations $u$ and $v$, extending the classical Richardson varieties in the case where $u\leq v$ in the Bruhat order. We establish their fundamental geometric properties, proving irreducibility and providing explicit dimension formulas. Moreover, we show that they have a well-defined stratification indexed by tilted Bruhat intervals, a generalization of classical Bruhat intervals previously introduced by Brenti, Fomin, and Postnikov. Additionally, we introduce a tilted generalization of the classical Deodhar decomposition of Richardson varieties, which leads to a combinatorial formula for tilted Kazhdan--Lusztig R-polynomials, a notion that arises naturally in our framework. We further develop a theory of total positivity for tilted Richardson varieties. In particular, we define and study the totally nonnegative parts of tilted Richardson varieties, proving they form a CW complex. This generalizes earlier results on the totally nonnegative flag variety and answers Björner's questions regarding geometric realizations of tilted Bruhat intervals. Finally, we establish explicit connections between tilted Richardson varieties and quantum Schubert calculus. Specifically, we prove that $\mathrm{T}_{u,v}$ coincides with minimal-degree two-point curve neighborhoods. As a result, we compute their cohomology classes and derive new relationships among Gromov--Witten invariants of the flag variety.

Colored interlacing triangles and Genocchi medians
Colored interlacing triangles, introduced by Aggarwal-Borodin-Wheeler (2024), provide the combinatorial framework for the Central Limit Theorem for probability measures arising from the Lascoux-Leclerc-Thibon (LLT) polynomials. Colored interlacing triangles depend on two key parameters: the number of colors $n$ and the depth of the triangle $N$. Recent work of Gaetz-Gao (2025) connects these objects to Schubert calculus and resolves the enumeration for $n=3$ and arbitrary depth $N$. However, the enumerative behavior for general $n$ has remained open. In this paper, we analyze the complementary regime: fixed depth $N=2$ and arbitrary number of colors $n$. We prove that in this setting, colored interlacing triangles are in bijection with Dumont derangements, identifying their enumeration with the Genocchi medians. This connects the probabilistic model to a rich hierarchy of classical combinatorial objects. Furthermore, we introduce a $q$-deformation of this enumeration arising naturally from the LLT transition energy. This yields new $q$-analogs of the Genocchi medians. Finally, we present computational results and sampling algorithms for colored interlacing triangles with higher $N$ or $n$, which suggests the limits of combinatorial tractability in the $(N,n)$ parameter space.

Equivariant homology of the symplectic affine Grassmannian and dual affine Schur $P$-functions
We study the torus-equivariant homology $H_*^T(\mathrm{Gr}_G)$ of the affine Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}_G$, where $G=\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$ is the symplectic group. This homology admits a natural ring structure and a Schubert basis, giving rise to a well-defined Schubert calculus. We realize $H_*^T(\mathrm{Gr}_G)$ in terms of symmetric functions. Our first main result introduces a new family of symmetric functions, called the \emph{dual affine Schur $P$-functions}, which represent the Schubert classes. These functions are defined through the action of the affine nil-Hecke algebra, and specialize, in the stable limit as $n\to \infty$, to the dual factorial $P$-functions of Nakagawa and Naruse. Our second main result gives a precise comparison between this symmetric function model and the geometric construction of $H_*^T (\mathrm{Gr}_G)$ due to Ginzburg and Peterson, which identifies it with a coordinate ring of a centralizer family in the Langlands dual group.

Combinatorial Aspects of Elliptic Schubert Calculus
The main goal of this paper is to extend two fundamental combinatorial results in Schubert calculus on flag manifolds from equivariant cohomology and $K$-theory to equivariant elliptic cohomology. The foundations of elliptic Schubert calculus were laid in a few relatively recent papers by Rimányi, Weber, and Kumar. They include the recursive construction of elliptic Schubert classes via generalizations of the cohomology and $K$-theory push-pull operators and the study of the corresponding Demazure algebra. We derive a Billey-type formula for the localization of elliptic Schubert classes (for partial flag manifolds of arbitrary type) and a pipe dream model for their polynomial representatives in the case of type $A$ flag manifolds. The latter extends the pipe dream model for double Schubert and Grothendieck polynomials. We also study the degeneration of elliptic Schubert classes to $K$-theory, which recovers the corresponding classical formulas.

Curves in projective space and RSK
The geometric Tevelev degrees of projective space enumerate general, pointed algebraic curves interpolating through the maximal possible number of points. Previous work expresses these invariants in terms of Schubert calculus. Extending ideas of Gillespie--Reimer-Berg, we use the RSK correspondence to give a positive interpretation of these counts in terms of the combinatorics of words.

Zero-free sector of the Wronski map on the totally nonnegative Grassmannian
A classical result states that if $f(z)$ is a polynomial of degree at most $n$ with nonnegative coefficients, then $f(z)$ has no zeros in the sector $|\arg(z)| < \fracπ{n}$ of the complex plane, and the bound $\fracπ{n}$ is tight. Motivated by the Shapiro--Shapiro conjecture and related problems in real Schubert calculus, we generalize this result to Wronskians of polynomials. Namely, let $f_1(z), \dots, f_k(z)$ be linearly independent polynomials of degree at most $n$ whose coefficient matrix has all nonnegative $k\times k$ minors (that is, the polynomials span an element of the totally nonnegative Grassmannian in the sense of Lusztig and Postnikov). We show that the Wronskian polynomial $\operatorname{Wr}(f_1, \dots, f_k)$ has no complex zeros in the sector $|\arg(z)| < \fracπ{n}$ (independent of $k$), and the bound $\fracπ{n}$ is tight. Our proof uses classical results of Gantmakher and Krein (1950) and Obreschkoff (1923) on sign variation.

Structure constants of Peterson Schubert calculus
We give an explicit, positive, and type-uniform formula for all equivariant structure constants of the Peterson Schubert calculus in arbitrary Lie types, using only the Cartan matrix of the corresponding root system $Φ$. As an application, we derive a type-uniform formula for the mixed $Φ$-Eulerian numbers.

Introduction to the Cohomology of the Flag Variety
One hundred years ago, Hilbert gave a list of important open problems in mathematics. His 15th problem asked for the development of a rigorous calculus explaining Schubert's enumerative results for intersecting varieties defined by rank conditions on vector spaces. Today by way of many contributions in algebraic topology, geometry, and combinatorics, we consider this solved. Yet, deep questions remain about the subtleties of actually carrying out the process. In this chapter, we hope to summarize the rigorous development of what has become known as Schubert calculus, with an eye toward computation. We discuss Grassmannians and flag varieties and their cohomology rings, following Monk's constructive algebraic approach. We derive formulas for Schur and Schubert polynomials, which represent cohomology classes of Schubert varieties. We hint at the vast literature in this area and point to the other references in the Handbook for more information. Finally, we identify open problems that remain a challenge even with modern tools at our fingertips in hopes of inspiring further contributions in this fascinating field. This is intended as the first chapter of a book entitled "Handbook of Combinatorial Algebraic Geometry: Subvarieties of the Flag Variety", a compendium of topics in the area. The book is being edited by Erik Insko, Martha Precup, and Ed Richmond. In addition to this introductory chapter, others will cover more advanced topics such as Kazhdan-Lusztig varieties, generalized smooth Schubert varieties, Richardson varieties and positroid varieties, spherical and torus orbit closures, spanning line configurations, different types of Hessenberg varieties, and generalizations to Kac-Moody flag varieties, each written by experts in those areas. We hope you enjoy this chapter enough to seek out the others, and that you send us any comments or corrections you find as you read this article!

Richardson tableaux and components of Springer fibers equal to Richardson varieties
Motivated by the study of Springer fibers and their totally nonnegative counterparts, we define a new subset of standard tableaux called Richardson tableaux. We characterize Richardson tableaux combinatorially using evacuation as well as in terms of a pair of associated reading words. We also characterize Richardson tableaux geometrically, proving that a tableau is Richardson if and only if the corresponding component of a Springer fiber is a Richardson variety, which in turn holds if and only if its positive part is a top-dimensional cell of the totally nonnegative Springer fiber studied by Lusztig (2021). We prove that each such component is smooth by leveraging a combinatorial description of the corresponding pair of reading words, generalizing a result of Graham-Zierau (2011). Another application is that the cohomology classes of these components can be computed in the Schubert basis using Schubert calculus. Finally, we show that the enumeration of Richardson tableaux is surprisingly elegant: the number of Richardson tableaux of fixed partition shape is a product of binomial coefficients, and the number of Richardson tableaux of size $n$ is the $n$th Motzkin number. As a result, we obtain a novel refinement for the Motzkin numbers, as well as a formula for the number of top-dimensional cells in the totally nonnegative Springer fiber.

Maximal transitivity of the cactus group on standard Young tableaux
The action of the cactus group $C_n$ on Young tableaux of a given shape $λ$ goes back to Berenstein and Kirillov and arises naturally in the study of crystal bases and quantum integrable systems. We show that this action is $2$-transitive on standard Young tableaux of the shape $λ$ if and only if $λ$ is not self-transpose and not a single hook. Moreover, we show that in these cases, the image of the cactus group in the permutation group of standard Young tableaux is either the whole permutation group or the alternating group, and prove that both cases are possible for infinitely many $λ$ (though the alternating group is more frequent). As an application, this implies that the Galois group of solutions to the Bethe ansatz in the Gaudin model attached to the Lie group $GL_d$ is, in many cases, at least the alternating group. This also extends the results of Sottile and White on the multiple transitivity of the Galois group of Schubert calculus problems in Grassmannians to many new cases.

Graham positivity of triple Schubert calculus
We prove Samuel's conjecture on certain Graham positivity of the expansion coefficient of two double Schubert polynomials in three sets of variables by establishing a refined version of Graham's positivity theorem. As a corollary, we prove Kirillov's conjecture on the positivity of skew divided difference operators applied to Schubert polynomials.
Some algebraic properties of ASM varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
Fulton's matrix Schubert varieties are affine varieties that arise in the study of Schubert calculus in the complete flag variety. Weigandt showed that arbitrary intersections of matrix Schubert varieties, now called ASM varieties, are indexed by alternating sign matrices (ASMs), objects with a long history in enumerative combinatorics. It is very difficult to assess Cohen-Macaulayness of ASM varieties or to compute their codimension, though these properties are well understood for matrix Schubert varieties due to work of Fulton. In this paper we study these properties of ASM varieties with a focus on the relationship between a pair of ASMs and their direct sum. We also consider ASM pattern avoidance from an algebro-geometric perspective.

Vanishing of Schubert coefficients is in ${\sf AM}\cap {\sf coAM}$ assuming the GRH
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Schubert vanishing problem is a central decision problem in algebraic combinatorics and Schubert calculus, with applications to representation theory and enumerative algebraic geometry. The problem has been studied for over 50 years in different settings, with much progress given in the last two decades. We prove that the Schubert vanishing problem is in ${\sf AM}$ assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis (GRH). This complements our earlier result in arXiv:2412.02064, that the problem is in ${\sf coAM}$ assuming the GRH. In particular, this implies that the Schubert vanishing problem is unlikely to be ${\sf coNP}$-hard, as we previously conjectured in arXiv:2412.02064. The proof is of independent interest as we formalize and expand the notion of a lifted formulation partly inspired by algebraic computations of Schubert problems, and extended formulations of linear programs. We use a result by Mahajan--Vinay to show that the determinant has a lifted formulation of polynomial size. We combine this with Purbhoo's algebraic criterion to derive the result.

Skew shapes, Ehrhart positivity and beyond
A classical result by Kreweras (1965) allows one to compute the number of plane partitions of a given skew shape and bounded parts as certain determinants. We prove that these determinants expand as polynomials with nonnegative coefficients. This result can be reformulated in terms of order polynomials of cell posets of skew shapes, and explains important positivity phenomena about the Ehrhart polynomials of shard polytopes, matroids, and order polytopes. Among other applications, we generalize a positivity statement from Schubert calculus by Fomin and Kirillov (1997) from straight shapes to skew shapes. We show that all shard polytopes are Ehrhart positive and, stronger, that all fence posets, including the zig-zag poset, and all circular fence posets have order polynomials with nonnegative coefficients. We discuss a general method for proving positivity which reduces to showing positivity of the linear terms of the order polynomials. We propose positivity conjectures on other relevant classes of posets.
