A new antisymmetrizer-to-determinant formula and a conjecture of Colomo and Pronko
Identities asserting that an antisymmetrizer admits a determinantal expression are central to several proofs of counting formulas for alternating sign matrices. Antisymmetrizers appear also frequently in symmetric function theory as, for instance, the Hall-Littlewood polynomials can be realized via antisymmetrizers. In this paper, we establish a new identity of this type, thereby proving a conjecture of Lukas Riegler and one of the authors. We also elaborate on a related antisymmetrizer that may be pivotal in resolving a beautiful conjecture of Colomo and Pronko, and we formulate a version of their conjecture tailored to the suggested approach.

Motivic quasimap wall-crossing for Grassmannians
We prove a wall-crossing formula for the Euler characteristics, considered as virtual mixed Hodge structures, of moduli spaces of $\varepsilon$-stable quasimaps to the Grassmannian $\mathbb{G}(r, N)$. For each $\varepsilon > 0$, we define a $\mathbb{Q}$-algebra automorphism of the ring of symmetric functions which takes the generating function for the $\mathbb{S}_n$-equivariant Euler characteristics of the moduli spaces of stable maps $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g, n}(\mathbb{G}(r, N), d)$ to the corresponding generating function for Toda's moduli spaces of $\varepsilon$-stable quasimaps $\overline{\mathcal{Q}}_{g, n}^{\varepsilon}(\mathbb{G}(r, N), d)$. The automorphism is given by explicit $q$-deformations of the power sum symmetric functions. The $\varepsilon \to 0$ limit of our formula exchanges the spaces of stable maps and the Marian--Oprea--Pandharipande moduli spaces of stable quotients. Our proof uses the geometry of relative Quot schemes to relate the quasimap spaces to moduli spaces of weighted stable maps, for which we obtain wall-crossing formulas via symmetric function theory.

Decomposition of Polysymmetric Functions and Stack Partitions
Polysymmetric functions, introduced by Asvin G and Andrew O'Desky as a generalization of symmetric functions, have natural connections to algebraic geometry and provide a foundation for further developments. In this paper, we study polysymmetric functions using stack partitions and develop combinatorial descriptions of several polysymmetric bases. We introduce two new signed polysymmetric bases and give explicit transition formulas among the monomial, homogeneous, elementary, power, and signed polysymmetric bases. These results extend many familiar identities from symmetric function theory to the polysymmetric setting.
Inversions in parking functions
In this paper, we obtain a q-exponential generating function for inversions on parking functions via symmetric function theory and also through a direct bijection to rooted labeled forests. We then apply these techniques to unit interval parking functions to give analogous results. We conclude by introducing a probabilistic approach through which we obtain formulas for the total number of inversions and several other statistics across all parking functions and other sets of words closed under rearrangement.

Monomial stability of Frobenius images
We study representation stability in the sense of Church, Ellenberg, and Farb \cite{FI-module} through the lens of symmetric function theory and the different symmetric function bases. We show that a sequence, $(F_n)_n$, where $F_n$ is a homogeneous symmetric function of degree $n$, has stabilizing Schur coefficients if and only if it has stabilizing monomial coefficients. More generally, we develop a framework for checking when stabilizing coefficients transfer from one symmetric function basis to another. We also see how one may compute representation stable ranges from the monomial expansions of the $F_n$.\parspace As applications, we reprove and refine the representation stability of diagonal coinvariant algebras, $DR_n$. We also observe new representation stability phenomena of the Garsia-Haiman modules. This establishes certain stability properties of the modified Macdonald polynomials, $\tilde{H}_{μ^{(n)}}[X;q,t]$ and the modified $q,t$-Kostka numbers, $\tilde{K}_{μ^{(n)},ν[n]}(q,t)$, for arbitrary sequences of partitions with $μ^{(n)}\vdash n$ and $μ^{(n)}\subseteq μ^{(n+1)}$.

Noncommutative symmetric functions and skewing operators
Published • View PublicationBIB
Skewing operators play a central role in the symmetric function theory because of the importance of the product structure of the symmetric function space. The theory of noncommutative symmetric functions is a useful tool for studying expansions of a given symmetric function in terms of various bases. In this paper, we establish a further development of the theory for studying skewing operators. Using this machinery, we are able to easily reproduce the Littlewood--Richardson rule, and provide recurrence relations for chromatic quasisymmetric functions, which generalizes Harada--Precup's recurrence.

James reduced product schemes and double quasisymmetric functions
Symmetric function theory is a key ingredient in the Schubert calculus of Grassmannians. Quasisymmetric functions are analogues that are similarly central to algebraic combinatorics, but for which the associated geometry is poorly developed. Baker and Richter (2008) showed that $\textrm{QSym}$ manifests topologically as the cohomology ring of the loop suspension of infinite projective space or equivalently of its combinatorial homotopy model, the James reduced product $J\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^\infty$. In recent work, we used this viewpoint to develop topologically-motivated bases of $\textrm{QSym}$ and initiate a Schubert calculus for $J\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^\infty$ in both cohomology and $K$-theory. Here, we study the torus-equivariant cohomology of $J\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^\infty$. We identify a cellular basis and introduce double monomial quasisymmetric functions as combinatorial representatives, analogous to the factorial Schur functions and double Schubert polynomials of classical Schubert calculus. We also provide a combinatorial Littlewood--Richardson rule for the structure coefficients of this basis. Furthermore, we introduce an algebro-geometric analogue of the James reduced product construction. In particular, we prove that the James reduced product of a complex projective variety also carries the structure of a projective variety.

From Cauchy's determinant formula to bosonic and fermionic immanant identities
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 110 (2023), art. # 103683, 16 pp • View PublicationBIB
Cauchy's determinant formula (1841) involving $\det ((1-u_i v_j)^{-1})$ is a fundamental result in symmetric function theory. It has been extended in several directions, including a determinantal extension by Frobenius [J. reine angew. Math. 1882] involving a sum of two geometric series in $u_i v_j$. This theme also resurfaced in a matrix analysis setting in a paper by Horn [Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 1969] - where the computations are attributed to Loewner - and in recent works by Belton-Guillot-Khare-Putinar [Adv. Math. 2016] and Khare-Tao [Amer. J. Math. 2021]. These formulas were recently unified and extended in [Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 2022] to arbitrary power series, with commuting/bosonic variables $u_i, v_j$. In this note we formulate analogous permanent identities, and in fact, explain how all of these results are a special case of a more general identity, for any character - in fact, any complex class function - of any finite group that acts on the bosonic variables $u_i$ and on the $v_j$ via signed permutations. (We explain why larger linear groups do not work, via a - perhaps novel - "symmetric function" characterization of signed permutation matrices that holds over any integral domain.) We then provide fermionic analogues of these formulas, as well as of the closely related Cauchy product identities.

Plethysms of Chromatic and Tutte Symmetric Functions
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics (2022), P3.28 • View PublicationBIB
Plethysm is a fundamental operation in symmetric function theory, derived directly from its connection with representation theory. However, it does not admit a simple combinatorial interpretation, and finding coefficients of Schur function plethysms is a major open question. In this paper, we introduce a graph-theoretic interpretation for any plethysm based on the chromatic symmetric function. We use this interpretation to give simple proofs of new and previously known plethystic identities, as well as chromatic symmetric function identities.

Product Matrix Processes with Symplectic and Orthogonal Invariance via Symmetric Functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We apply symmetric function theory to study random processes formed by singular values of products of truncations of Haar distributed symplectic and orthogonal matrices. These product matrix processes are degenerations of Macdonald processes introduced by Borodin and Corwin. Through this connection, we obtain explicit formulae for the distribution of singular values of a deterministic matrix multiplied by a truncated Haar orthogonal or symplectic matrix under conditions where the latter factor acts as a rank $1$ perturbation. Consequently, we generalize the recent Kieburg-Kuijlaars-Stivigny formula for the joint singular value density of a product of truncated unitary matrices to symplectic and orthogonal symmetry classes. Specializing to products of two symplectic matrices with a rank $1$ perturbative factor, we show that the squared singular values form a Pfaffian point process.

Spanning subspace configurations
A {\em spanning configuration} in the complex vector space $\mathbb{C}^k$ is a sequence $(W_1, \dots, W_r)$ of linear subspaces of $\mathbb{C}^k$ such that $W_1 + \cdots + W_r = \mathbb{C}^k$. We present the integral cohomology of the moduli space of spanning configurations in $\mathbb{C}^k$ corresponding to a given sequence of subspace dimensions. This simultaneously generalizes the classical presentation of the cohomology of partial flag varieties and the more recent presentation of a variety of spanning line configurations defined by the author and Pawlowski. This latter variety of spanning line configurations plays the role of the flag variety for the Haglund-Remmel-Wilson Delta Conjecture of symmetric function theory.

Recent Trends in Quasisymmetric Functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
This article serves as an introduction to several recent developments in the study of quasisymmetric functions. The focus of this survey is on connections between quasisymmetric functions and the combinatorial Hopf algebra of noncommutative symmetric functions, appearances of quasisymmetric functions within the theory of Macdonald polynomials, and analogues of symmetric functions. Topics include the significance of quasisymmetric functions in representation theory (such as representations of the 0-Hecke algebra), recently discovered bases (including analogues of well-studied symmetric function bases), and applications to open problems in symmetric function theory.

Smooth entrywise positivity preservers, a Horn-Loewner master theorem, and symmetric function identities
Published in Transactions of the American Mathematical Society 375 (2022), no. 3, 2217-2236 • View PublicationBIB
A special case of a fundamental result of Loewner and Horn [Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 1969] says that given an integer $n \geq 1$, if the entrywise application of a smooth function $f : (0,\infty) \to \mathbb{R}$ preserves the set of $n \times n$ positive semidefinite matrices with positive entries, then $f$ and its first $n-1$ derivatives are non-negative on $(0,\infty)$. In a recent joint work with Belton-Guillot-Putinar [J. Eur. Math. Soc., in press], we proved a stronger version, and used it to strengthen the Schoenberg-Rudin characterization of dimension-free positivity preservers [Duke Math. J. 1942, 1959]. In recent works with Belton-Guillot-Putinar [Adv. Math. 2016] and with Tao [Amer. J. Math., in press] we used local, real-analytic versions at the origin of the Horn-Loewner condition, and discovered unexpected connections between entrywise polynomials preserving positivity and Schur polynomials. In this paper, we unify these two stories via a Master Theorem (Theorem A) which (i) simultaneously unifies and extends all of the aforementioned variants; and (ii) proves the positivity of the first $n$ nonzero Taylor coefficients at individual points rather than on all of $(0,\infty)$. A key step in the proof is a new determinantal / symmetric function calculation (Theorem B), which shows that Schur polynomials arise naturally from considering arbitrary entrywise maps that are sufficiently differentiable. Of independent interest may be the following application to symmetric function theory: we extend the Schur function expansion of Cauchy's (1841) determinant (whose matrix entries are geometric series $1 / (1 - u_j v_k)$), as well as of a determinant of Frobenius [J. reine angew. Math. 1882] (whose matrix entries are a sum of two geometric series), to arbitrary power series, and over all commutative rings.

Axioms for shifted tableau crystals
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give local axioms that uniquely characterize the crystal-like structure on shifted tableaux developed in a previous paper by Gillespie, Levinson, and Purbhoo. These axioms closely resemble those developed by Stembridge for type A tableau crystals. This axiomatic characterization gives rise to a new method for proving and understanding Schur $Q$-positive expansions in symmetric function theory, just as the Stembridge axiomatic structure provides for ordinary Schur positivity.
Chromatic symmetric functions and H-free graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Two celebrated conjectures in chromatic symmetric function theory concern the positivity chromatics symmetric functions of claw-free graphs. Here we extend the claw-free idea to general graphs and consider the e-positivity question for H-free graphs where H = {claw, F} and H={claw, F, co-F}, where F is a four-vertex graph. We settle the question for all cases except H={claw, co-diamond}, and we provide some partial results in that case.

Dual equivalence graphs II: Transformations on locally Schur positive graphs
Dual equivalence graphs are a powerful tool in symmetric function theory that provide a general framework for proving that a given quasisymmetric function is symmetric and Schur positive. In this paper, we study a larger family of graphs that includes dual equivalence graphs and define maps that, in certain cases, transform graphs in this larger family into dual equivalence graphs. This allows us to broaden the applications of dual equivalence graphs and points the way toward a broader theory that could solve many important, long-standing Schur positivity problems.
Generating functions and statistics on spaces of maximal tori in classical Lie groups
Published in New York J. Math. 23 (2017) 165-191 • Search Publication
In this paper we use generating function methods to obtain new asymptotic results about spaces of $F$-stable maximal tori in $GL_n(\overline{F_q})$, $Sp_{2n}(\overline{F_q})$, and $SO_{2n+1}(\overline{F_q})$. We recover stability results of Church--Ellenberg--Farb and Jiménez Rolland--Wilson for "polynomial" statistics on these spaces, and we compute explicit formulas for their stable values. We derive a double generating function for the characters of the cohomology of flag varieties in type B/C, which we use to obtain analogs in type B/C of results of Chen: we recover "twisted homological stability" for the spaces of maximal tori in $Sp_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$ and $SO_{2n+1}(\mathbb{C})$, and we compute a generating function for their "stable twisted Betti numbers". We also give a new proof of a result of Lehrer using symmetric function theory.
Some remarkable new Plethystic Operators in the Theory of Macdonald Polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
In the 90's a collection of Plethystic operators were introduced in [3], [7] and [8] to solve some Representation Theoretical problems arising from the Theory of Macdonald polynomials. This collection was enriched in the research that led to the results which appeared in [5], [6] and [9]. However since some of the identities resulting from these efforts were eventually not needed, this additional work remained unpublished. As a consequence of very recent publications [4], [11], [19], [20], [21], a truly remarkable expansion of this theory has taken place. However most of this work has appeared in a language that is virtually inaccessible to practitioners of Algebraic Combinatorics. Yet, these developments have led to a variety of new conjectures in [2] in the Combinatorics and Symmetric function Theory of Macdonald Polynomials. The present work results from an effort to obtain in an elementary and accessible manner all the background necessary to construct the symmetric function side of some of these new conjectures. It turns out that the above mentioned unpublished results provide precisely the tools needed to carry out this project to its completion.

Hall-Littlewood polynomials and Cohen-Lenstra heuristics for Jacobians of random graphs

Cohen-Lenstra heuristics for Jacobians of random graphs give rise to random partitions. We connect these random partitions to the Hall-Littlewood polynomials of symmetric function theory, and use this connection to give combinatorial proofs of properties of these random partitions. In addition, we use Markov chains to give an algorithm for generating these partitions.

A product formula for multivariate Rogers-Szegö polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $H_n(t)$ denote the classical Rogers-Szegö polynomial, and let $\tH_n(t_1, \ldots, t_l)$ denote the homogeneous Rogers-Szegö polynomial in $l$ variables, with indeterminate $q$. There is a classical product formula for $H_k(t)H_n(t)$ as a sum of Rogers-Szegö polynomials with coefficients being polynomials in $q$. We generalize this to a product formula for the multivariate homogeneous polynomials $\tH_n(t_1, \ldots, t_l)$. The coefficients given in the product formula are polynomials in $q$ which are defined recursively, and we find closed formulas for several interesting cases. We then reinterpret the product formula in terms of symmetric function theory, where these coefficients become structure constants.
