A 13-vertex counterexample to $e$-log-concavity for chromatic quasisymmetric functions
We exhibit a connected natural unit interval graph on $13$ vertices whose chromatic quasisymmetric function has an elementary-basis coefficient that is positive, palindromic, and unimodal, but not log-concave. For the Hessenberg function $h=(2,4,4,6,7,10,10,10,10,12,12,13,13)$ and $λ=(6,5,1,1)$, the coefficients of $q^5,q^6,q^7$ in $[e_λ]X_{G(h)}(\mathbf{x};q)$ are $1,6,38$; hence $6^2<1\cdot38$. This disproves Conjecture 5.3 of Abreu--Nigro and its later formulations by Tom and by Sagan--Tom. The calculation is certified by a standalone deterministic verifier using exact integer and rational arithmetic.

Enumerating matrices with prescribed entries in an adjoint orbit
We study intersections of conjugacy classes of square matrices over a finite field with affine coordinate subspaces, or equivalently matrices in a fixed adjoint orbit with prescribed entries. Our main result treats the case of prescribed columns: for a partially defined linear map we give a Hall scalar product formula for the number of extensions to an endomorphism with prescribed similarity invariants. This formula is expressed in terms of skew modified Hall--Littlewood functions and $q$-Whittaker functions. As applications, we count monic matrix polynomials over $\mathbb{F}_q$ with prescribed Smith normal form and with prescribed determinant, and recover the Gerstenhaber--Reiner formula for the number of square matrices with a fixed characteristic polynomial. We also note that known point-count formulas for Hessenberg varieties imply related formulas for Hessenberg supports involving chromatic quasisymmetric functions, motivating polynomiality questions for more general supports and prescribed affine slices.

Shuffle theorem for torus link homology
We prove that the symmetric function $e_{(1^k)}[-MX^{m,n}] \cdot 1$, arising from the elliptic Hall algebra, equals the generating function for $k$-tuples of cyclic $(m,n)$-parking functions. This result resolves a conjecture of Gorsky--Mazin--Vazirani and Wilson, establishing that the elliptic Hall algebra governs the Khovanov--Rozansky homology of torus links $T(km,kn)$. Consequently, this provides an affirmative answer to a question of Galashin and Lam in the torus link case. As a key step in the proof, we develop a rational analogue of the Shareshian--Wachs involution originally introduced to prove the symmetry property of the chromatic quasisymmetric functions.

The Total Chromatic Quasisymmetric Functions of a Graph
In this paper, we introduce and study two variants of the chromatic quasisymmetric function of a graph: the total chromatic quasisymmetric function via vertex labeling and via acyclic orientations. The original definition of the chromatic quasisymmetric function of a graph by Shareshian and Wachs depends on a labeling of the vertices of the graph, which directly affects the properties of the coefficients appearing in the decomposition of the chromatic quasisymmetric function of a graph into different bases. Motivated by this, we construct the first variant of the chromatic quasisymmetric function of a graph by normalizing it with respect to all the labelings of the vertices. The second variant is motivated by the \emph{tree isomorphism conjecture} and is constructed in terms of acyclic orientations. We investigate the properties of the coefficients in the expansion in the monomial quasisymmetric basis for both variants and provide a comparative analysis. Furthermore, we derive explicit formulas for the coefficients in the monomial decomposition of the two variants for the star graph. For the labeling-based variant, these coefficients arise from a binomial identity for which we provide a combinatorial proof.

Signed permutations and degree-one dot action representations for types B and C
A spline is an assignment of polynomials to the vertices of a graph, where the difference of two polynomials along an edge must belong to the ideal labeling that edge. We consider a ring of splines $\mathcal{M}_{H}$ constructed on a graph whose vertices are the Weyl group $\mathfrak{W}_n$ of signed permutations, and whose edges and edge-ideals are defined using an order ideal $H$ of positive roots. These splines are a module over the polynomial ring in two ways, and a $\mathfrak{W}_n$-module by the dot action. These structures on $\mathcal{M}_{H}$ give rise to the graded left and right dot action representations of $\mathfrak{W}_n$. The left representation is the type B/C generalization of the type A dot action for regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties (and thus, chromatic quasisymmetric functions), and the right representation is the same for corresponding manifolds of isospectral matrices (and thus, unicellular LLT polynomials). This paper gives explicit module generators for the degree-one graded piece of $\mathcal{M}_{H}$ and computes the degree-one piece of the both dot action representations for all $H$ using the combinatorial data of $H$.

Chromatic quasisymmetric functions for signed graphs
In 1995, Stanley introduced the chromatic symmetric function of a graph, which specializes to its chromatic polynomial, and which has been the focus of intense research. In 2017, Shareshian, Wachs, and Ellzey defined a refinement of this function for a directed graph, that appears to be in $QSym$, the algebra of quasisymmetric functions, which is of great interest in algebraic combinatorics. Our goal is to extend this work to signed graphs, taking into account the perspective of the hyperplane arrangement associated with a signed graph, developed by Zaslavsky. We introduce the signed chromatic quasisymmetric invariant, and obtain structural properties. As a consequence, we define and study $SQSym$, the algebra of signed quasisymmetric functions.

Divided difference operators for Hessenberg representations
The equivariant cohomology ring of a regular semisimple Hessenberg variety in type A is a free module over the equivariant cohomology ring of a point. When equipped with Tymoczko's dot action, it becomes a twisted representation of the symmetric group, and the character of this representation is given by the chromatic quasisymmetric function of an indifference graph. In this note, we use divided difference operators to decompose this representation as a direct sum of sub-representations in a way that categorifies the modular relation between chromatic quasisymmetric functions.

Hall--Littlewood expansions of chromatic quasisymmetric polynomials using linked rook placements
In this work, we obtain a Hall--Littlewood expansion of the chromatic quasisymmetric function arising from a natural unit interval order and describe the coefficients in terms of linked rook placements. Applying the Carlsson--Mellit relation between chromatic quasisymmetric functions and unicellular LLT polynomials, we also obtain a combinatorial description for the coefficients of the unicellular LLT polynomials expanded in terms of the modified transformed Hall--Littlewood polynomials.

$(q,t)$-chromatic symmetric functions
By using level one polynomial representations of affine Hecke algebras of type $A$, we obtain a $(q,t)$-analogue of the chromatic symmetric functions of unit interval graphs which generalizes Syu Kato's formula for the chromatic symmetric functions of unit interval graphs. We show that at $q=1$, the $(q,t)$-chromatic symmetric functions essentially reduce to the chromatic quasisymmetric functions defined by Shareshian-Wachs, which in particular gives an algebraic proof of Kato's formula. We also give an explicit formula of the $(q,t)$-chromatic symmetric functions at $q=\infty$, which leads to a probability theoretic interpretation of $e$-expansion coefficients of chromatic quasisymmetric functions used in our proof of the Stanley-Stembridge conjecture. Moreover, we observe that the $(q,t)$-chromatic symmetric functions are multiplicative with respect to certain deformed multiplication on the ring of symmetric functions. We give a simple description of such multiplication in terms of the affine Hecke algebras of type $A$. We also obtain a recipe to produce $(q,t)$-chromatic symmetric functions from chromatic quasisymmetric functions, which actually makes sense for any oriented graphs.
Counting $\mathbb F_q$-points of orbital varieties in ad-nilpotent ideals of type $A_n$
Let $\mathfrak b_n(\mathbb F_q)$ denote the Lie algebra of upper triangular $n \times n$ matrices over $\mathbb F_q$, and let $\mathfrak u_n(\mathbb F_q)$ be the subalgebra of strictly upper triangular matrices. For every $\mathfrak b_n(\mathbb F_q)$-stable ideal $\mathfrak a \subseteq \mathfrak u_n(\mathbb F_q)$ and partition $μ$ of $n$, we give an explicit formula for the number of elements in $\mathfrak a$ of Jordan type $μ$. Up to a power of $q$, the number of points is given by the Hall scalar product of a modified Hall-Littlewood function indexed by $μ$ and a chromatic quasisymmetric function associated to $\mathfrak a$. In the special case $\mathfrak a = \mathfrak u_Λ(\mathbb F_q)$, the nilradical of the standard parabolic subalgebra of $\mathfrak{gl}_n(\mathbb F_q)$ corresponding to a composition $Λ$ of $n$, our formula specializes to a result of Karp and Thomas: up to a polynomial in $q$, the number of elements in $\mathfrak u_Λ(\mathbb F_q)$ of Jordan type $μ$ equals the coefficient of $\mathbf x^Λ$ in the specialization of the dual Macdonald symmetric function $\mathrm Q_{μ'}(\mathbf x; q^{-1}, t)$ at $t = 0$. We give a new and shorter proof using a parabolic version of Borodin's division algorithm. We present four applications: (1) a formula for the number of points on a nilpotent Hessenberg variety; (2) a derivation of Kirillov's recurrence for counting nilpotent matrices of fixed Jordan type; (3) a formula for the number of $X \in \mathfrak u_Λ(\mathbb F_q)$ with $X^2 = 0$, yielding a new proof of the Kirillov-Melnikov-Ekhad-Zeilberger formula via two-row Macdonald polynomials; (4) a formula for the number of double cosets $\mathsf U_1 \backslash \mathsf{GL}_n(\mathbb F_q) / \mathsf U_2$, where $\mathsf U_1$ and $\mathsf U_2$ are unipotent subgroups from $\mathfrak b_n(\mathbb F_q)$-stable ideals.

When is the chromatic quasisymmetric function symmetric?
We investigate the problem of when a chromatic quasisymmetric function (CQF) $X_G(x;q)$ of a graph $G$ is in fact symmetric. We first prove the remarkable fact that if a product of two quasisymmetric functions $f$ and $g$ in countably infinitely many variables is symmetric, then in fact $f$ and $g$ must be symmetric. This allows the problem to be reduced to the case of connected graphs. We then show that any labeled graph having more than one source or sink has a nonsymmetric CQF. As a corollary, we find that all trees other than a directed path have a nonsymmetric CQF. We also show that a family of graphs we call ''mixed mountain graphs'' always have symmetric CQF.

Counting points on Hessenberg Varieties over finite fields
We give a counting formula in terms of modified Hall-Littlewood polynomials and the chromatic quasisymmetric function for the number of points on an arbitrary Hessenberg variety over a finite field. As a consequence, we express the Poincaré polynomials of complex Hessenberg varieties in terms of a Hall scalar product involving the symmetric functions above. We use these results to give a new proof of a combinatorial formula for the modified Hall-Littlewood polynomials.

A proof of the Stanley--Stembridge conjecture
We give a probabilistic interpretation of the coefficients of the elementary symmetric function expansion of the chromatic quasisymmetric function for any unit interval graph. As a corollary, we prove the Stanley--Stembridge conjecture.
Chromatic quasisymmetric functions of the path graph
We show that the chromatic quasisymmetric function (CQF) of a labeled path graph on $n$ vertices is not symmetric unless the labeling is the natural labeling $1, 2, ..., n$ or its reverse $n, ..., 2, 1$. We also show that the star graph $K_{1, n-1}$ with $n\geq 3$ has a nonsymmetric CQF for all labelings.
Chromatic functions, interval orders and increasing forests
The chromatic quasisymmetric functions (csf) of Shareshian and Wachs associated to unit interval orders have attracted a lot of interest since their introduction in 2016, both in combinatorics and geometry, because of their relation to the famous Stanley-Stembridge conjecture (1993) and to the topology of Hessenberg varieties, respectively. In the present work we study the csf associated to the larger class of interval orders with no restriction on the length of the intervals. Inspired by an article of Abreu and Nigro, we show that these csf are weighted sums of certain quasisymmetric functions associated to the increasing spanning forests of the associated incomparability graphs. Furthermore, we define quasisymmetric functions that include the unicellular LLT symmetric functions and generalize an identity due to Carlsson and Mellit. Finally we conjecture a formula giving their expansion in the type 1 power sum quasisymmetric functions which should extend a theorem of Athanasiadis.

A signed $e$-expansion of the chromatic quasisymmetric function
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove a new signed elementary symmetric function expansion of the chromatic quasisymmetric function of any natural unit interval graph. We then use a sign-reversing involution to prove a new combinatorial formula for K-chains, which are graphs formed by joining cliques at single vertices. This formula immediately implies $e$-positivity and $e$-unimodality for K-chains. We also prove a version of our signed $e$-expansion for arbitrary graphs.

Noncommutative symmetric functions and skewing operators
Published • View PublicationBIB
Skewing operators play a central role in the symmetric function theory because of the importance of the product structure of the symmetric function space. The theory of noncommutative symmetric functions is a useful tool for studying expansions of a given symmetric function in terms of various bases. In this paper, we establish a further development of the theory for studying skewing operators. Using this machinery, we are able to easily reproduce the Littlewood--Richardson rule, and provide recurrence relations for chromatic quasisymmetric functions, which generalizes Harada--Precup's recurrence.

A unipotent realization of the chromatic quasisymmetric function

This paper realizes of two families of combinatorial symmetric functions via the complex character theory of the finite general linear group $\mathrm{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{F}_{q})$: chromatic quasisymmetric functions and vertical strip LLT polynomials. The associated $\mathrm{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{F}_{q})$ characters are elementary in nature and can be obtained by induction from certain well-behaved characters of the unipotent upper triangular groups $\mathrm{UT}_{n}(\mathbb{F}_{q})$. The proof of these results also gives a general Hopf algebraic approach to computing the induction map. Additional results include a connection between the relevant $\mathrm{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{F}_{q})$ characters and Hessenberg varieties and a re-interpretation of known theorems and conjectures about the relevant symmetric functions in terms of $\mathrm{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{F}_{q})$.

A $\mathrm{GL}(\mathbb{F}_q)$-compatible Hopf algebra of unitriangular class functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper constructs a novel Hopf algebra $\mathsf{cf}(\mathrm{UT}_{\bullet})$ on the class functions of the unipotent upper triangular groups $\mathrm{UT}_{n}(\mathbb{F}_{q})$ over a finite field. This construction is representation theoretic in nature and uses the machinery of Hopf monoids in the category of vector species. In contrast with a similar known construction, this Hopf algebra has the property that induction to the finite general linear group induces a homomorphism to Zelevinsky's Hopf algebra of $\mathrm{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{F}_{q})$ class functions. Furthermore, $\mathsf{cf}(\mathrm{UT}_{\bullet})$ contains a Hopf subalgebra which is isomorphic to a known combiantorial Hopf algebra, previously used to prove a conjecture about chromatic quasisymmetric functions. Some additional Hopf algebraic properties are also established.

Chromatic quasisymmetric functions and noncommutative $P$-symmetric functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a natural unit interval order $P$, we describe proper colorings of the incomparability graph of $P$ in the language of heaps. We also introduce a combinatorial operation, called a \emph{local flip}, on the heaps. This operation defines an equivalence relation on the proper colorings, and the equivalence relation refines the ascent statistic introduced by Shareshian and Wachs. In addition, we define an analogue of noncommutative symmetric functions introduced by Fomin and Greene, with respect to $P$. We establish a duality between the chromatic quasisymmetric function of $P$ and these noncommutative symmetric functions. This duality leads us to positive expansions of the chromatic quasisymmetric functions into several symmetric function bases. In particular, we present some partial results for the $e$-positivity conjecture.
