Length-generating functions for twisted involutions of Coxeter groups
For a Coxeter system $(W,S)$ of finite rank and an involutive automorphism $\ast:W\to W$ which preserves $S$, we prove that the length-generating function $\sum_{z\in\mathbf{I}_{W,\ast}}q^{\ell(z)}$ of the set of $\ast$-twisted involutions is rational. We derive recurrence relations analogous to the well-known recurrence relations expressing the growth series $W(q):=\sum_{w\in W}q^{\ell(w)}$ in terms of the growth series $W_I(q)$ of the parabolic subgroups of $W$. Our result extends to any subset $\mathcal{C}$ of $\ast$-twisted involutions that is closed under $\ast$-twisted conjugation. We use these recurrence relations to give an alternative proof of a power-series identity for twisted involutions due to Lusztig.
Intertwining Operators for Siegel Parabolics over Finite Fields
We consider degenerate principal series representations $\operatorname{Ind}_P^Gχ$ over finite fields, where $G$ is a classical subgroup of $\operatorname{GL}_{2n}$, and $P$ is the Siegel parabolic subgroup. For example, we show that this representation is always multiplicity-free and irreducible for generic characters $χ$. We then discuss a particular intertwining operator $I$ on $\operatorname{Ind}_P^Gχ$ and its related combinatorics. Firstly, this operator $I$ produces families of diagonalizable antitriangular matrices with well-behaved eigenvalues. Secondly, applying $I$ to a special vector in $\operatorname{Ind}_P^Gχ$ leads us to various matrix Gauss sums, whose evaluations imply an explicit equidistribution result of the trace and determinant of symmetric and alternating invertible matrices.
Interval Garside groups arising from involutions in finite reflection groups
We identify and study the interval Garside groups arising from the restriction of the absolute order on a Coxeter group to a lattice $[1,w]_T$, where $w$ is an involution. Those involutions $w$ for which $[1,w]_T$ is a lattice were previously classified by the second author; every such involution lies in the center of the parabolic subgroup generated by $[1,w]_T$. Except in type $B_n$, the obtained groups are isomorphic to (decomposable) right-angled Artin groups. We also investigate the situation for some finite complex reflection groups, mostly in rank two, taking for $w$ a (not necessarily involutive) central element.
On Kazhdan--Lusztig basis elements having no reversal factorization
For $w$ in the symmetric group $S_n$, let $\widetilde C_w$ be the corresponding modified, signless Kazhdan--Lusztig basis element of the type-$A$ Hecke algebra $H_n(q)$. An extension [Ann. Comb. 25, no. 3 (2021) pp. 757--787] of a result of Deodhar [Geom. Dedicata 36, (1990) pp. 95--119] implies that any factorization of the form \begin{equation*}
\widetilde C_w = \frac1{f(q)} \widetilde C_{v^{(1)}} \cdots \widetilde C_{v^{(r)}},
\end{equation*} with $v^{(1)},\dotsc,v^{(r)}$ maximal elements of parabolic subgroups of $S_n$ and $f(q) \in \mathbb N[q]$ depending on these, provides cancellation-free combinatorial interpretations of the polynomials $\{P_{v,w}(q) \,|\, v \in S_n \}$ appearing in the expansion $\sum_v P_{v,w}(q) T_v$ of $\widetilde C_w$ in terms of the natural basis $\{ T_v \,|\, v \in S_n \}$ of $H_n(q)$. While the set of permutations $w \in S_n$ admitting such a factorization of $\widetilde C_w$ has not yet been characterized, we apply a result of Gaetz -- Gao [Adv. Math. 457 (2024) Paper No. 109941] to describe a set admitting no such factorization.
Cyclic sieving phenomena on parabolic classes of faces of the cluster complex
The cyclic sieving phenomenon was introduced by Reiner, Stanton and White in 2004 as a generalization of Stembridge's $q=-1$ phenomenon. In a paper from 2008, Eu and Fu studied many occurrences of this phenomenon on the faces of the generalized cluster complex with the action of the Fomin-Reading rotation in the classical types $A_n$, $B_n$, $D_n$ and $I_2(k)$. There was yet no known uniform $q$-analogue of the $k$-face numbers of these complexes. In a more recent paper from 2023, Douvropoulos and Josuat-Vergès provided a refinement of the enumeration of the faces of the generalized cluster complex using a uniform formula. For a parabolic subgroup $W_X \subset W$ of the associated Coxeter group $W$, their formula factorises nicely under the assumption that $N_W(W_X)/W_X$ acts as a reflection group on $X$, which is very often the case. Using this condition, we provide a uniform refinement of these cyclic sieving phenomena using a $q$-analogue of their main formula with a type by type proof based on the classification of finite irreducible Coxeter groups.
Kazhdan-Lusztig bases of parabolic Hecke algebras and applications to Schur-Weyl duality
With an eye to applications to type A and Schur-Weyl duality, we study Kazhdan-Lusztig bases for a general parabolic Hecke algebra. Parabolic Hecke algebras are idempotent subalgebras of Hecke algebras corresponding to parabolic subgroups, and for type A they coincide with the fused Hecke algebras appearing in a generalisation of the Schur-Weyl duality with the quantum group of GL(N). In this paper we investigate two different Kazhdan-Lusztig bases for parabolic Hecke algebras, together with the associated cells and the corresponding representations. We quickly specialise to type A, for which we describe the cells in terms of the RSK correspondence generalising thus the well-known description for the symmetric group. As a first application we recover the classification of irreducible representations of parabolic Hecke algebras of type A and provide a new construction of these representations. Next we turn to the Schur-Weyl duality and describe the kernel in terms of one the basis studied precedently. Moreover, we formulate some conjectures about a generator of these kernels in terms of Kazhdan-Lusztig basis elements, give some evidence and prove these conjectures in some special cases.
Total positivity in twisted flag varieties
Let $G$ be a Kac-Moody group, split over $\mathbb R$. The totally nonnegative part of $G$ and its (ordinary) flag variety $G/B^+$ was introduced by Lusztig. It is known that the totally nonnegative parts of $G$ and $G/B^+$ have remarkable combinatorial and topological properties.
In this paper, we consider the totally nonnegative part of the $J$-twisted flag variety $G/{}^J B^+$, where ${}^J B^+$ is the Borel subgroup opposite to $B^+$ in the standard parabolic subgroup $P_J^+$ of $G$. The $J$-twisted flag varieties include the ordinary flag variety $G/B^+$ as a special case. Our main result show that the totally nonnegative part of $G/{}^J B^+$ decomposes into cells, and the closure of each cell is a regular CW complex. This generalizes the work of Galashin-Karp-Lam \cite{GKL22} and the joint work of Bao with the first author \cite{BH24} for ordinary flag varieties.
As an application, we deduce that the totally nonnegative part of the double flag variety $G/B^+ \times G/B^-$ with respect to the diagonal $G$-action has similar nice properties. We also establish some connections between the totally nonnegative part of the double flag with the canonical basis of the tensor product of a lowest weight module with a highest weight module of $G$.
As another application, we show that the link of identity in a totally nonnegative reduced double Bruhat cell of $G$ is a regular CW complex. This generalizes the work of Hersh \cite{Her14} on the link of $U_{\geq0}^-$ and gives a positive answer to an open question of Fomin and Zelevinsky.
Weyl groups and the Kostant game
This paper establishes a novel combinatorial framework at the intersection of Lie theory and algebraic combinatorics, based on a generalization of the Kostant game. We begin by reviewing the foundations of root systems, the classification of Dynkin diagrams, and the structure of Weyl groups. Subsequently, we analyze the original Kostant game as a tool for generating positive roots, demonstrating its unique termination on simply-laced diagrams and its role in an alternative classification thereof.
The main contribution of this work -- which, to our knowledge, has not been studied before -- is a multi-vertex generalization of the game that allows for the simultaneous modification of multiple vertices of a Dynkin diagram. We prove that the resulting configurations of this new game establish a natural bijection with the elements of the quotient W/W_J of Weyl groups by parabolic subgroups. This formalism is applied to problems in algebraic geometry, specifically addressing cases of the Mukai conjecture via Hilbert polynomials, and is accompanied by a computational implementation in Java. These results offer new combinatorial perspectives for studying root counting problems, the regularity of reduced word languages, and the construction of Young Tableaux.
Testing chirality on hypertopes
In this paper we give group-theoretical conditions on the maximal parabolic subgroups of a coset geometry for it to be a chiral hypertope, bypassing the need to construct the incidence graph of the coset geometry to determine whether or not it is a chiral hypertope. This result permits to study much larger coset geometries with computers and gives hope on proving theoretical results about coset geometries that are chiral hypertopes.
Polynomial properties of unipotent radicals of parabolic subgroups in classical groups
Let $R_u^{X,d}$ denote the unipotent radical of a (proper) maximal standard parabolic subgroup of the classical group $\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}(q)$, $\mathrm{SO}_{2n}(q)$, or $\mathrm U_{2n}({q^2})$. This paper establishes explicit formulas for the number of irreducible characters of $R_u^{X,d}$ with degree $q^e$.

We study the restriction of the absolute order on a Coxeter group $W$ to an interval $[1,w]_T$, where $w\in W$ is an involution. We characterize and classify those involutions $w$ for which $[1,w]_T$ is a lattice, using the notion of involutive parabolic subgroups.
On the enumeration of double cosets and self-inverse double cosets
Double cosets appear in many contexts in combinatorics, for example in the enumeration of certain objects up to symmetries. Double cosets in a quotient of the form $H\backslash G / H$ have an inverse, and can be their own inverse. In this paper we present various formulas enumerating double cosets, and in particular self-inverse double cosets. We study double cosets in classical groups, especially the symmetric groups and the general linear groups, explaining how to obtain the informations on their conjugacy classes required to apply our formulas. We also consider double cosets of parabolic subgroups of Coxeter groups of type B.

Let $\mathrm{Int}(n)$ denote the set of nonempty left weak Bruhat intervals in the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$. We investigate the equivalence relation $\overset{D}{\simeq}$ on $\mathrm{Int}(n)$, where $I \overset{D}{\simeq} J$ if and only if there exists a descent-preserving poset isomorphism between $I$ and $J$. For each equivalence class $C$ of $(\mathrm{Int}(n), \overset{D}{\simeq})$, a partial order $\preceq$ is defined by $[σ, ρ]_L \preceq [σ', ρ']_L$ if and only if $σ\preceq_R σ'$. Kim-Lee-Oh (2023) showed that the poset $(C, \preceq)$ is isomorphic to a right weak Bruhat interval.
In this paper, we focus on lower and upper descent weak Bruhat intervals, specifically those of the form $[w_0(S), σ]_L$ or $[σ, w_1(S)]_L$, where $w_0(S)$ is the longest element in the parabolic subgroup $\mathfrak{S}_S$ of $\mathfrak{S}_n$, generated by $\{s_i \mid i \in S\}$ for a subset $S \subseteq [n-1]$, and $w_1(S)$ is the longest element among the minimal-length representatives of left $\mathfrak{S}_{[n-1] \setminus S}$-cosets in $\mathfrak{S}_n$. We begin by providing a poset-theoretic characterization of the equivalence relation $\overset{D}{\simeq}$. Using this characterization, the minimal and maximal elements within an equivalence class $C$ are identified when $C$ is a lower or upper descent interval. Under an additional condition, a detailed description of the structure of $(C, \preceq)$ is provided. Furthermore, for the equivalence class containing $[w_0(S), σ]_L$, an injective hull of ${\sf B}([w_0(S), σ]_L)$ is given, and for the equivalence class containing $[σ, w_1(S)]_L$, a projective cover of ${\sf B}([σ, w_1(S)]_L)$ is given.
On the Classification of Schubert Varieties in Partial Flag Varieties
We generalize the classification of isomorphism classes of Schubert varieties in complete flag varieties G/B to a class of partial flag varieties G/P. In particular, we classify all Schubert varieties in G/P where P is a minimal parabolic subgroup and all Schubert surfaces. We also obtain several pairs of isomorphisms of Schubert varieties from folding the root system. This allows us to find an upper bound of the cardinality of isomorphism classes of Schubert three-folds.
Relations between generalised Gelfand-Tsetlin and Kazhdan-Lusztig bases of $S_n$
We prove that the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis of Specht modules is upper triangular with respect to all generalized Gelfand-Tsetlin bases constructed from any multiplicity-free tower of standard parabolic subgroups.
On Modular Invariants of Truncated Polynomial Rings in low ranks
We verify the conjectures due to Lewis, Reiner and Stanton about the Hilbert series of the invariant ring of the truncated polynomial ring for all parabolic subgroups up to rank $3$. This is done by constructing an explicit set of generators for each invariant ring in question. We also propose a conjecture concerning the action of the Steenrod algebra and the Dickson algebra on a certain naturally occurring filtration of the invariant ring under the general linear group.
Almost Symmetric Schur Functions
We introduce and study a generalization $s_{(μ|λ)}$ of the Schur functions called the almost symmetric Schur functions. These functions simultaneously generalize the finite variable key polynomials and the infinite variable Schur functions. They form a homogeneous basis for the space of almost symmetric functions and are defined using a family of recurrences involving the isobaric divided difference operators and limits of Weyl symmetrization operators. The $s_{(μ|λ)}$ are the $q=t=0$ specialization of the stable limit non-symmetric Macdonald functions $\widetilde{E}_{(μ|λ)}$ defined by the author in previous work. We find a combinatorial formula for these functions simultaneously generalizing well known formulas for the Schur functions and the key polynomials. Further, we prove positivity results for the coefficients of the almost symmetric Schur functions expanded into the monomial basis and into the monomial-Schur basis of the space of almost symmetric functions. The latter positivity result follows after realizing the almost symmetric Schur functions $s_{(μ|λ)}$ as limits of characters of representations of parabolic subgroups in type $GL.$
Elements of minimal length and Bruhat order on fixed point cosets of Coxeter groups
We study the restriction of the strong Bruhat order on an arbitrary Coxeter group $W$ to cosets $x W_L^θ$, where $x$ is an element of $W$ and $W_L^θ$ the subgroup of fixed points of an automorphism $θ$ of order at most two of a standard parabolic subgroup $W_L$ of $W$. When $θ\neq\mathrm{id}$, there is in general more than one element of minimal length in a given coset, and we explain how to relate elements of minimal length. We also show that elements of minimal length in cosets are exactly those elements which are minimal for the restriction of the Bruhat order.
Torus quotients of Richardson varieties in $G_{r,qr+1}$
Let $r$ and $q$ be positive integers and $n=qr+1.$ Let $G = SL(n, \mathbb{C})$ and $T$ be a maximal torus of $G.$ Let $P^{α_r}$ be the maximal parabolic subgroup of $G$ corresponding to the simple root $α_r.$ Let $ω_r$ be the fundamental weight corresponding to $α_r.$ Let $W$ be the Weyl group of $G$ and $W_{P^{α_r}}$ be the Weyl group of $P^{α_r}.$ Let $W^{P^{α_r}}$ be the set of all minimal coset representatives of $W/W_{P^{α_r}}$ in $W.$ Let $w_{r,n}$ (respectively, $v_{r,n}$) be the minimal (respectively, maximal) element in $W^{P^{α_{r}}}$ such that $w_{r,n}(nω_r) \leq 0$ (respectively, $v_{r,n}(nω_r) \geq 0$). Let $v \leq v_{r,n}$ and $X^v_{w_{r,n}}$ be the Richardson variety in $G_{r,n}$ corresponding to $v$ and $w_{r,n}.$ In this article, we give a sufficient condition on $v$ such that the GIT quotient of $X^{v}_{w_{r,n}}$ for the action of $T$ is the product of projective spaces with respect to the descent of the line bundle $\mathcal{L}(nω_r).$
Overview on the theory of double flag varieties for symmetric pairs
Let $ G $ be a connected reductive algebraic group and its symmetric subgroup $ K $. The variety $ \dblFV = K/Q \times G/P $ is called a double flag variety, where $ Q $ and $ P $ are parabolic subgroups of $ K $ and $ G $ respectively.
In this article, we make a survey on the theory of double flag varieties for a symmetric pair $ (G, K) $ and report entirely new results and theorems on this theory.
Most important topic is the finiteness of $ K $-orbits on $ \dblFV $. We summarize the classification of $ \dblFV $ of finite type, which are scattered in the literatures. In some respects such classifications are complete, and in some cases not. In particular, we get a classification of double flag varieties of finite type when a symmetric pair is of type AIII, using the theorems of Homma who describes ``indecomposable'' objects of such double flag varieties. Together with these classifications, newly developed embedding theory provides double flag varieties of finite type, which are new. Other ingredients in this article are Steinberg theory, generalization of Robinson-Schensted correspondence, and orbit classification via quiver representations.
We hope this article is useful for those who want to study the theory of double flag varieties.
