A Mixed Robinson--Schensted--Knuth Construction in the Representation Theory of $\mathrm{GL}_n$ over Local non-Archimedean Fields
We present a simple combinatorial method for computing the socle of representations of $\mathrm{GL}_n(F)$, where $F$ is a local non-Archimedean field, parabolically induced from two ladder representations. We adapt recent approaches to such problems using the classical Robinson--Schensted--Knuth correspondence (RSK) and introduce a new variant of RSK that we call mixed-RSK. Some combinatorial properties of this map are investigated and then used to resolve a conjecture of Erez Lapid.
Pipe Dream Rectification and Dual RSK Correspondence
We prove Dennin's conjecture (Conjecture 8.9 of arXiv:2506.21052) that his variant of dual RSK correspondence is symmetric when restricted to biGrassmannian permutations. For a binary matrix $A$, let $A^\dagger$ denote its transpose-complement, and let $\operatorname{ins}(A)$ and $\operatorname{rec}(A)$ denote its insertion and recording tableaux. We prove that $\operatorname{ins}(A^\dagger) = \overline{\operatorname{rec}(A)}$, where the bar denotes the natural complement of the recording tableau. Our proof uses rectification of super pipe dreams and a downward induction on suffixes of $A$.
A new characterization of right keys, and the $m$-symmetric Schur functions at $t=0$
The ring $R_m$ of $m$-symmetric functions consists of the formal power series that are symmetric in the variables $x_{m+1},x_{m+2},\dots$ but carry no symmetry in the first $m$ variables. We develop a combinatorial theory for the specialization at $t=0$ of the Schur functions of $R_m$. Our main tool is a new characterization of right key tableaux as suprema of the sets of decreasing subwords of the reading words of the subtableaux of $T$. Being invariant under elementary Knuth transformations, this characterization is compatible with the RSK correspondence. We obtain in this way a generating function over semistandard tableaux for the $m$-symmetric Schur functions at $t=0$, together with a combinatorial proof of a Cauchy identity in $R_m$. The $m$-symmetric Schur functions and their dual are then respectively identified with Demazure atoms and Demazure characters. Restricted to the last $m$ variables, our correspondence specializes to a proof, by ordinary RSK, of Lascoux's nonsymmetric Cauchy identity for Demazure characters and atoms. As further applications, we relate the $m$-symmetric Schur functions at $t=0$ to the almost symmetric Schur functions through a unitriangular change-of-basis matrix, obtain tableau generating functions and Cauchy identities for both families, and derive Jacobi-Trudi type determinantal formulas for three different bases.
Caged subsequences in permutations
Given a sequence $\mathfrak{a}:=(a_1,\ldots,a_n)$ of reals, a subsequence $\mathfrak{b}=(a_{i_1},\ldots,a_{i_k})$ is said to be "caged" if the largest and smallest among the members of $\mathfrak{b}$ are $a_{i_1}$ and $a_{i_k}$, though not necessarily in that order. In this paper, we consider the problem of maximal caged sequences in permutations $π\in S_n$. We also consider the same problem for a random permutation, both when the permutation is chosen uniformly at random and also when it is picked uniformly at random from among the permutations of rectangular shape, via the RSK correspondence.
Classical and vincular patterns of length three in generalized alternating permutations
Let k be an integer at least 2, and let D_{N,k} be the set of permutations of {1,...,N} whose descent set is exactly {k, 2k, ..., k*floor((N-1)/k)}. We enumerate the elements of D_{N,k} avoiding each classical and each vincular pattern of length three.
For classical patterns, we give recursive bijections from the 132- and 231-avoiding classes to ordered forests of complete k-ary trees, obtaining the Raney number. The 213- and 312-avoiding classes are obtained from these forest bijections by completing the last block and applying reverse-complement symmetry. The remaining classical case 321 is expressed by RSK.
For vincular patterns, we enumerate the six fully consecutive patterns and the twelve patterns with exactly one adjacency. The closed-form results are accompanied by bijective models: the Catalan, Raney, Fuss-Catalan, and RSK cases are natural k-ary or fixed-descent extensions of classical bijections, while the product and poset cases arise from block-insertion and record/tree-poset encodings forced by the adjacency conditions.
Jeu de taquin forests and the inverse infinite RSK correspondence
The Plancherel-random infinite Young tableau arises from applying the infinite Robinson-Schensted-Knuth (RSK) correspondence to a sequence of i.i.d. random variables distributed uniformly on the unit interval [0,1]. Building on the isomorphism of dynamical systems established in prior work, we provide an explicit geometric characterization of the inverse map. Our approach makes use of a previously unexplored structure, the jeu de taquin forest on the infinite tableau, where edges connect boxes according to local comparison rules. We prove that each tree in this forest almost surely extends toward infinity with a well-defined asymptotic direction, establishing a canonical bijection between trees and values in the i.i.d. input sequence. The ordering is recovered through tree lifetimes under iterated jeu de taquin transformations.
Skew column RSK dynamics and the box-ball system
The Fomin local rules for Schensted column insertion can be seen as a two-lane box-ball system, in which a carrier moves particles forward or laterally. Running such two-lane dynamics in parallel on a periodic lattice gives rise to a two-dimensional generalization of the box-ball system, which we call the \emph{skew column RSK dynamics}. Equivalently, this is a deterministic dynamics on pairs of skew semistandard Young tableaux $(P_t,Q_t)_{t \in \mathbb{Z}}$. We prove that this dynamics exhibits solitonic behavior and construct an explicit bijection $(P,Q) \leftrightarrow (H_1,H_2,κ,ν)$ that linearizes the time evolution. The resulting coordinates consist of two horizontally weak tableaux $H_1,H_2$ recording the asymptotic soliton data, integer riggings $κ$, and a weakly decreasing sequence of integers $ν$. A key feature of the construction is an explicit projection from the skew column RSK dynamics to the classical box-ball system; under this projection, the rigging $κ$ is precisely the Kerov--Kirillov--Reshetikhin rigging of the associated box-ball configuration. Our proof uses two commuting affine crystal structures on pairs of skew tableaux and a novel connectivity theorem for distinguished subgraphs of tensor products of Kirillov--Reshetikhin crystals. We also derive Greene-type formulas for the soliton lengths in terms of last-passage percolation on the associated cylindrical environment. Finally, by taking generating functions in the linearizing coordinates, we obtain bijective proofs of Cauchy and Kawanaka--Littlewood-type identities for transformed Hall--Littlewood polynomials.
Analysis of the asymmetric shelf shuffle
In an asymmetric shelf shuffle, a deck of $n$ cards is dealt sequentially from the bottom and assigned one of the $m$ shelves uniformly at random. The card is placed at the top of the assigned shelf with probability $p$, and at the bottom of the assigned shelf with probability $(1-p)$. Analysis of the shelf shuffle has gained much attention recently, and the case $p=1/2$ was first treated by Diaconis--Fulman--Holmes [Ann. Appl. Prob. 23 (2013), no. 4, 1692--1720]. In this paper, we extend the analysis of the shelf shuffle to general $p\in (0, 1)$. In particular, we study the distribution of cycles, cycle lengths, number of descents, number of valleys, number of inversions, and the RSK shape of a permutation obtained from an asymmetric shelf shuffle. Our results extend the analysis of Diaconis--Fulman--Holmes to arbitrary $p$. Furthermore, our analysis of the distribution of descents and inversions is new even for $p=1/2$.
Uncrowding the 5-Vertex Model: RSK and Crystal Structures
While the uncrowding algorithm on set-valued tableaux has long been instrumental in proving the Schur positivity of stable symmetric Grothendieck polynomials, lattice models have emerged as a modern framework for investigating symmetric functions, in particular symmetric Grothendieck polynomials. In this work, we synthesize these combinatorial and lattice-theoretic approaches by defining both the Robinson--Schensted--Knuth (RSK) correspondence and the uncrowding operation directly on a 5-vertex model of Motegi and Sakai and its subsequent reinterpretation by Buciumas, Scrimshaw, and Weber. Our lattice-based RSK formulation yields a powerful new result: the direct construction of the associated crystal structure on the states of the 5-vertex model.
AHA! RSK
We give a spectral realization of the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth (RSK) correspondence in terms of the representation theory of the symmetric group $S_n$ and the degenerate affine Hecke algebra (AHA) $H_n$. We view RSK, which builds a pair of standard Young tableaux from a permutation, as a special case of rectification, also known as Jeu de Taquin, which turns skew tableaux into straight ones. In this framing, the initial permutation corresponds to a skew tableau of staircase shape. To interpret this in terms of representation theory, take permutations to label weight vectors in a generic $H_n$-module $V(a_1, \ldots , a_n)$, which is isomorphic to $\mathbb{C}[S_n]$ as an $S_n$-module. Writing permutations as staircases amounts to placing these weight vectors inside the regular representation of a larger symmetric group containing $S_n$; more geometrically, we push $S_n$ to the right toward infinity so its Jucys-Murphy (JM) elements have enough room to represent the external translations of $H_n$. Then, rectification corresponds to squeezing out this extra room from the left, leaving only $S_n$ and its regular JM elements as the limit of the external translations. By expressing slides via sequences of exchanges of consecutive values inside the tableau, we can model rectification by an operator acting on the regular representation. This lets us explicitly write down the change of basis between $H_n$-weight vectors and $S_n$-weight vectors, where the latter are eigenvectors of the JM elements in $S_n$ acting both on the left and on the right, and hence labeled by pairs of standard tableaux. The resulting correspondence between the labels of the weight vectors is exactly RSK.
Counting 3-way contingency tables via quiver semi-invariants
Let $\mathbf{T}_{\mathbf{a},\mathbf{b}}$ be the number of $3$-way contingency tables of size $m \times n \times p$ with two of its three plane-sum margins fixed by $\mathbf{a}=(a_1, \ldots, a_m) \in \mathbb{N}^m$ and $\mathbf{b}=(b_1, \ldots, b_n) \in \mathbb{N}^n$. When $p=1$, this is the number of $m \times n$ non-negative integer matrices whose row and column sums are fixed by $\mathbf{a}$ and $\mathbf{b}$.
In this paper, we study the numbers $\mathbf{T}_{\mathbf{a},\mathbf{b}}$ through the lens of quiver invariant theory. Let $\mathcal{Q}^{p}_{m,n}$ be the $p$-complete bipartite quiver with $m$ source vertices, $n$ sink vertices, and $p$ arrows from each source to each sink. Let $\mathbf{1}$ denote the dimension vector of $\mathcal{Q}^{p}_{m,n}$ that takes value $1$ at every vertex of $\mathcal{Q}^{p}_{m,n}$, and let $θ_{\mathbf{a}, \mathbf{b}}$ denote the integral weight that assigns $a_i$ to the $i^{th}$ source vertex and $-b_j$ to the $j^{th}$ sink vertex of $\mathcal{Q}^{p}_{m,n}$.
We begin by realizing $\mathbf{T}_{\mathbf{a},\mathbf{b}}$ as the dimension of the space of semi-invariants associated to $(\mathcal{Q}^{p}_{m,n}, \mathbf{1}, θ_{\mathbf{a}, \mathbf{b}})$. Using this connection and methods from quiver invariant theory, we show that $\mathbf{T}_{\mathbf{a},\mathbf{b}}$ is a parabolic Kostka coefficient. In the case $p=1$, this recovers the formula for the number of the $m \times n$ contingency tables with row and column sums fixed by $\mathbf{a}$ and $\mathbf{b}$, which in the classical $2$-way setting can also be obtained via the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence.
Promotion and rowmotion in rational Catalan combinatorics
We study four bijections, which are promotion, evacuation, rowmotion, and rowvacuation, on generalized Dyck paths in rational Catalan combinatorics. We define the maps on generalized Dyck paths, which have their origins in maps on Dyck paths and non-crossing partitions. They include rotation, Kreweras complement map, Simion--Ullman involution on non-crossing partitions, and Lalanne--Kreweras involution on Dyck paths. These maps have an expression in terms of the four combinatorial bijections. By extending the bijection studied by D. Armstrong, C. Stump, and H. Thomas on one hand, and the correspondence of RSK type studied by B. Adenbaum and S. Elizalde on the other, we present the equivalence between the two bijections, promotion and rowmotion, on generalized Dyck paths through these bijection and correspondence. For this purpose, we provide an alternative description of the correspondence of RSK type in terms of Dyck tilings.
An RSK correspondence for cylindric tableaux
This paper establishes an analogue of the Robinson--Schensted correspondence for cylindric tableaux. In particular, for any pair of positive integers $(d,L)$, we construct a bijection between permutations that avoid the patterns $d\cdots 1 (d+1)$ and $1\cdots (L+1)$ and pairs of $(d,L)$-cylindric standard Young tableaux with a common shape. This arises as a special case of a Knuth-type generalization involving cylindric semistandard tableaux and a further generalization involving oscillating tableaux. Using these results, we construct several other bijections and derive enumerative consequences involving cylindric tableaux and pattern-avoiding permutations. For example, we give asymptotics for the number of permutations in $S_n$ that avoid the patterns $d\cdots 1 (d+1)$ and $1\cdots (L+1)$ as $n\to\infty$.
Kazhdan-Lusztig bases of parabolic Hecke algebras and applications to Schur-Weyl duality
With an eye to applications to type A and Schur-Weyl duality, we study Kazhdan-Lusztig bases for a general parabolic Hecke algebra. Parabolic Hecke algebras are idempotent subalgebras of Hecke algebras corresponding to parabolic subgroups, and for type A they coincide with the fused Hecke algebras appearing in a generalisation of the Schur-Weyl duality with the quantum group of GL(N). In this paper we investigate two different Kazhdan-Lusztig bases for parabolic Hecke algebras, together with the associated cells and the corresponding representations. We quickly specialise to type A, for which we describe the cells in terms of the RSK correspondence generalising thus the well-known description for the symmetric group. As a first application we recover the classification of irreducible representations of parabolic Hecke algebras of type A and provide a new construction of these representations. Next we turn to the Schur-Weyl duality and describe the kernel in terms of one the basis studied precedently. Moreover, we formulate some conjectures about a generator of these kernels in terms of Kazhdan-Lusztig basis elements, give some evidence and prove these conjectures in some special cases.
A note on a cyclotomic-friendly application of RSK
We give a combinatorial realization of a level-$\ell$ Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence conjectured to exist by Song and Wang for cyclotomic Schur categories. We show that cyclotomic basis elements can be canonically reorganized into flagged block composition matrices encoding families of biwords, so that the correspondence is obtained by applying the classical RSK correspondence componentwise. This perspective identifies the level-$\ell$ correspondence as an iteration of classical RSK, specializing to the usual correspondence when $\ell=1$ and behaving naturally under restriction to lower levels.
Mixed jeu de taquin and a problem of Soojin Cho
Serrano (2010) introduced the shifted plactic monoid, governing Haiman's (1989) mixed insertion algorithm, as a type B analogue of the classical plactic monoid that connects jeu de taquin of Young tableaux with the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth insertion algorithm. Serrano proposed a corresponding definition of skew shifted plactic Schur functions. Cho (2013) disproved Serrano's conjecture regarding this definition, by showing that the functions do not live in the desired ring and hence cannot provide an algebraic interpretation of tableau rectification or of the corresponding structure coefficients. Cho asked for a new definition with particular properties. We introduce such a definition and prove that it behaves as desired. We also introduce a new jeu de taquin theory that computes mixed insertion.
Minimal Inversions in Integer Matrices of Fixed RSK Shape
The Robinson-Schensted-Knuth (RSK) algorithm maps an integer matrix to a pair of semi-standard Young tableaux (SSYTs) whose underlying shape has the same integer partition. We study the set of matrices associated with a given partition $λ$ vis-a-vis the number of inversions of the matrix. In the case where the integer matrix is a permutation matrix, the resulting tableaux are standard Young tableaux or SYTs. Han (EJC, 2005) combinatorially studied the set of permutations that map to SYTs of shape $λ$ under the RSK algorithm and counted the permutations with the minimum number of inversions in that set, as well as formulated the minimal number of inversions. Han's work can be extended to a case where the matrix is a general integer matrix and the tableaux are semi-standard Young tableaux. We have conjectured a formula for the minimal number of inversions in the set of matrices with a fixed shape $λ$. We further provide a conjecture for the characterisation of the minimal generalised matrices.
Vertex operators, infinite wedge representations, and correlation functions of the t-Schur measure
We study the $t$-Schur measure on partitions, defined by $ \mathbb{P}(λ)=Z^{-1}S_λ(x;t)s_λ(y) $, where $S_λ(x;t)$ denotes the $t$-Schur symmetric functions and $s_λ(y)$ the ordinary Schur functions, and $Z$ is the normalising constant. Using vertex operator calculus, we realise $S_λ(x;t)$ in the charged free-fermion Fock space, yielding a $t$-deformation of the classical boson-fermion correspondence. These realisations give vertex-algebraic proofs of the $t$-Cauchy identities and $t$-Gessel identity. Building on this framework, we compute the correlation functions of the $t$-Schur measure and show that the associated point process is determinantal, with an explicit correlation kernel. The Poissonised $t$-Plancherel measure appears as a specialisation of our construction, so its correlation functions follow as a corollary. As an application, we derive the limiting distribution for the length of the longest ascent pair in a random permutation. Our results interpolate the Schur case at $t=0$, connect to the Schur-$Q$ theory at $t=-1$, and provide a probabilistic interpretation of a natural $t$-refinement of increasing subsequences via a generalised RSK correspondence.
Descent-restricted subsequences via RSK and evacuation
The length $\mathsf{is}(π)$ of a longest increasing subsequence in a permutation $π$ has been extensively studied. An increasing subsequence is one that has no descents. We study generalizations of this statistic by finding longest subsequences with other descent restrictions. We first consider the statistic which encodes the longest length of a subsequence with a given number of descents. We then generalize this to restrict the descent set of the subsequence. Extending the classical result for $\mathsf{is}(π)$, we show how these statistics can be obtained using the RSK correspondence and the Schützenberger involution. In particular, these statistics only depend on the recording tableau of the permutation.
Comparability in Bruhat orders
We determine the sharp asymptotic scale of the probability that two uniformly random permutations are comparable in weak Bruhat order, showing that $\mathbb{P}(σ_1 \preceq_W σ_2)=\exp\Bigl(\bigl(-\tfrac12+o(1)\bigr)\,n\log n\Bigr)$. This significantly improves both of the best known bounds, due to Hammett and Pittel, which placed this probability between $\exp((-1+o(1))n\log n)$ and $\exp(-Θ(n))$. We also improve the best known lower bound for strong Bruhat-order comparability, due to the same authors, by proving a subexponential lower bound. The Bruhat orders are natural partial orders on the symmetric group, appearing in wide-reaching settings including the geometry of flag manifolds, the representation theory of $\mathfrak{S}_{n}$, and the combinatorics of the permutohedron. To analyze weak Bruhat order, we combine classic analytic, tableau-theoretic, and poset-theoretic tools, including the Plancherel measure and the RSK bijection. For strong Bruhat order we construct large families where members are comparable with high probability. Our proof that members are comparable combines the tableau criterion with an associated random-walk-type deviation process.
