Skew column RSK dynamics and the box-ball system
The Fomin local rules for Schensted column insertion can be seen as a two-lane box-ball system, in which a carrier moves particles forward or laterally. Running such two-lane dynamics in parallel on a periodic lattice gives rise to a two-dimensional generalization of the box-ball system, which we call the \emph{skew column RSK dynamics}. Equivalently, this is a deterministic dynamics on pairs of skew semistandard Young tableaux $(P_t,Q_t)_{t \in \mathbb{Z}}$. We prove that this dynamics exhibits solitonic behavior and construct an explicit bijection $(P,Q) \leftrightarrow (H_1,H_2,κ,ν)$ that linearizes the time evolution. The resulting coordinates consist of two horizontally weak tableaux $H_1,H_2$ recording the asymptotic soliton data, integer riggings $κ$, and a weakly decreasing sequence of integers $ν$. A key feature of the construction is an explicit projection from the skew column RSK dynamics to the classical box-ball system; under this projection, the rigging $κ$ is precisely the Kerov--Kirillov--Reshetikhin rigging of the associated box-ball configuration. Our proof uses two commuting affine crystal structures on pairs of skew tableaux and a novel connectivity theorem for distinguished subgraphs of tensor products of Kirillov--Reshetikhin crystals. We also derive Greene-type formulas for the soliton lengths in terms of last-passage percolation on the associated cylindrical environment. Finally, by taking generating functions in the linearizing coordinates, we obtain bijective proofs of Cauchy and Kawanaka--Littlewood-type identities for transformed Hall--Littlewood polynomials.

The slack data of the recording tableaux in the quantum Littlewood-Richardson map determine its inverse: some applications
We introduce the slack of a recording tableau in the quantum Littlewood-Richardson (LR) map and show that it inherits the needed data from LR-Sundaram tableaux to define the inverse of the quantum LR map. Notably this enriched slack information packs the suitable reverse Schensted column insertion routes to compute the inverse. The slack data is then applied to $\mathfrak{k}$-highest symplectic tableaux.

$qt$RSK${}^*$: A probabilistic dual RSK correspondence for Macdonald polynomials
We introduce a probabilistic generalization of the dual Robinson--Schensted--Knuth correspondence, called $qt$RSK${}^*$, depending on two parameters $q$ and $t$. This correspondence extends the $q$RS$t$ correspondence, recently introduced by the authors, and allows the first tableaux-theoretic proof of the dual Cauchy identity for Macdonald polynomials. By specializing $q$ and $t$, one recovers the row and column insertion version of the classical dual RSK correspondence as well as of $q$- and $t$-deformations thereof which are connected to $q$-Whittaker and Hall--Littlewood polynomials. When restricting to Jack polynomials and $\{0,1\}$-matrices corresponding to words, we prove that the insertion tableaux obtained by $qt$RSK${}^*$ are invariant under swapping letters in the input word. Our approach is based on Fomin's growth diagrams and the notion of probabilistic bijections.

A row analogue of Hecke column insertion
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a new row insertion algorithm on decreasing tableaux and increasing tableaux, generalizing Edelman-Greene (EG) row insertion. Our row insertion algorithm is a nontrivial variation of Hecke column insertion which generalizes EG column insertion. Similar to Hecke column insertion, our row insertion is bijective and respects Hecke equivalence, and therefore recovers the expansions of stable Grothendieck functions into Grassmannian stable Grothendieck functions.

Grammic monoids with three generators
Published • View Publication • BIB
Young tableaux are combinatorial objects whose construction can be achieved from words over a finite alphabet by row or column insertion as shown by Schensted sixty years ago. Recently Abram and Reutenauer studied the action the free monoid on the set of columns by slightly adapting the insertion algorithm. Since the number of columns is finite, this action yields a finite transformation monoid. Here we consider the action on the set of rows. We investigate this infinite monoid in the case of a 3 letter alphabet. In particular we show that it is the quotient of the free monoid relative to a congruence generated by the classical Knuth rules plus a unique extra rule.

Robinson-Schensted Algorithms Obtained from Tableau Recursions
The numbers $f_λ$ of standard tableaux of shape $λ\vdash n$ satisfy 2 fundamental recursions: $f_λ= \sum f_{λ^-}$ and $(n + 1)f_λ=\sum f_{λ^+}$, where $λ^-$ and $λ^+$ run over all shapes obtained from $λ$ by adding or removing a square respectively. The first of these recursions is trivial; the second can be proven algebraically from the first. These recursions together imply algebraically the dimension formula $n! =\sum f_λ^2$ for the irreducible representations of $S_n$. We show that a combinatorial analysis of this classical algebraic argument produces an infinite family of algorithms, among which are the classical Robinson-Schensted row and column insertion algorithms. Each of our algorithms yields a bijective proof of the dimension formula.

$q{\rm RS}t$: A probabilistic Robinson--Schensted correspondence for Macdonald polynomials (extended abstract)
We present a probabilistic generalization of the Robinson--Schensted correspondence in which a permutation maps to several different pairs of standard Young tableaux with nonzero probability. The probabilities depend on two parameters $q$ and $t$, and the correspondence gives a new proof of the squarefree part of the Cauchy identity for Macdonald polynomials. By specializing $q$ and $t$ in various ways, one recovers both the row and column insertion versions of the Robinson--Schensted correspondence, as well as several $q$- and $t$-deformations of row and column insertion which have been introduced in recent years in connection with integrable probability.

$q{\rm RS}t$: A probabilistic Robinson--Schensted correspondence for Macdonald polynomials

We present a probabilistic generalization of the Robinson--Schensted correspondence in which a permutation maps to several different pairs of standard Young tableaux with nonzero probability. The probabilities depend on two parameters $q$ and $t$, and the correspondence gives a new proof of the squarefree part of the Cauchy identity for Macdonald polynomials (i.e., the equality of the coefficients of $x_1 \cdots x_n y_1 \cdots y_n$ on either side, which are related to permutations and standard Young tableaux). By specializing $q$ and $t$ in various ways, one recovers the row and column insertion versions of the Robinson--Schensted correspondence, several $q$- and $t$-deformations of row and column insertion which have been introduced in recent years in connection with $q$-Whittaker and Hall--Littlewood processes, and the Plancherel measure on partitions. Our construction is based on Fomin's growth diagrams and the recently introduced notion of a probabilistic bijection between weighted sets.

A q-weighted version of the Robinson-Schensted algorithm
Published in Electron. J. Probab. 18, 1-25 (2013) • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a q-weighted version of the Robinson-Schensted (column insertion) algorithm which is closely connected to q-Whittaker functions (or Macdonald polynomials with t=0) and reduces to the usual Robinson-Schensted algorithm when q=0. The q-insertion algorithm is `randomised', or `quantum', in the sense that when inserting a positive integer into a tableau, the output is a distribution of weights on a particular set of tableaux which includes the output which would have been obtained via the usual column insertion algorithm. There is also a notion of recording tableau in this setting. We show that the distribution of weights of the pair of tableaux obtained when one applies the q-insertion algorithm to a random word or permutation takes a particularly simple form and is closely related to q-Whittaker functions. In the case $0\le q<1$, the q-insertion algorithm applied to a random word also provides a new framework for solving the q-TASEP interacting particle system introduced (in the language of q-bosons) by Sasamoto and Wadati (1998) and yields formulas which are equivalent to some of those recently obtained by Borodin and Corwin (2011) via a stochastic evolution on discrete Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns (or semistandard tableaux) which is coupled to the q-TASEP process. We show that the sequence of P-tableaux obtained when one applies the q-insertion algorithm to a random word defines another, quite different, evolution on semistandard tableaux which is also coupled to the q-TASEP process.

Complementary Algorithms For Tableaux
Published in J. Combin. Th. Ser. A, 96, No. 1, October 2001, 127-161. • View Publication • BIB
We study four operations defined on pairs of tableaux. Algorithms for the first three involve the familiar procedures of jeu de taquin, row insertion, and column insertion. The fourth operation, hopscotch, is new, although specialised versions have appeared previously. Like the other three operations, this new operation may be computed with a set of local rules in a growth diagram, and it preserves Knuth equivalence class. Each of these four operations gives rise to an a priori distinct theory of dual equivalence. We show that these four theories coincide. The four operations are linked via the involutive tableau operations of complementation and conjugation.

Flag varieties and interpretations of Young tableau algorithms
Published • View Publication • BIB
The conjugacy classes of nilpotent $n\times n$ matrices can be parametrised by partitions $λ$ of $n$, and for a nilpotent $η$ in the class parametrised by $λ$, the variety $F_η$ of $η$-stable flags has its irreducible components parametrised by the standard Young tableaux of shape $λ$. We indicate how several algorithmic constructions defined for Young tableaux have significance in this context, thus extending Steinberg's result that the relative position of flags generically chosen in the irreducible components of $F_η$ parametrised by tableaux $P$ and $Q$, is the permutation associated to $(P,Q)$ under the Robinson-Schensted correspondence. Other constructions for which we give interpretations are Schützenberger's involution of the set of Young tableaux, jeu de taquin (leading also to an interpretation of Littlewood-Richardson coefficients), and the transpose Robinson-Schensted correspondence (defined using column insertion). In each case we use a doubly indexed family of partitions, defined in terms of the flag (or pair of flags) determined by a point chosen in the variety under consideration. We show that for generic choices, the family satisfies certain combinatorial relations, whence the family describes the computation of the algorithmic operation being interpreted, as we described in a previous publication.
