Special Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals
We give a uniform realization of Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals $B^{r,s}$, in terms of PBW crystals, for all affine types, $s \geq 1$, and nodes $r$ in the orbit of the $0$ node in the Dynkin diagram. Our proof is almost uniform except we prove some technical lemmas by first proving the case when the $r$-th fundamental weight $Λ_r$ is minuscule by using properties of minuscule crystal and then extend this to the case when $Λ_r$ is cominuscule using virtual crystals.

Square root crystals and the square root of $B(\infty)$
We introduce a general monoidal category of $\mathbf{N}$-root crystals and then study the special case of square root $\mathfrak{gl}_n$-crystals. The latter objects include Yu's crystals on semistandard set-valued tableaux. Prior work of the first author, Tong, and Yu showed that regular square root $\mathfrak{gl}_n$-crystals can be a useful tool for proving Grothendieck positivity results. The objects studied here go beyond the regular case and allow us to construct a square root analog of the direct limit crystal $B(\infty)$. We give several descriptions of our square root of $B(\infty)$, using marginally large tableaux, the Lusztig or PBW parameterization, and the Nakashima--Zelevinsky polyhedral model. We show that this crystal has a simple character formula, exhibits a nontrivial Demazure filtration, and recovers Yu's semistandard set-valued tableau crystals after taking appropriate tensor products. We also investigate a number of differences between square root crystals and classical crystal constructions.
Skew column RSK dynamics and the box-ball system
The Fomin local rules for Schensted column insertion can be seen as a two-lane box-ball system, in which a carrier moves particles forward or laterally. Running such two-lane dynamics in parallel on a periodic lattice gives rise to a two-dimensional generalization of the box-ball system, which we call the \emph{skew column RSK dynamics}. Equivalently, this is a deterministic dynamics on pairs of skew semistandard Young tableaux $(P_t,Q_t)_{t \in \mathbb{Z}}$. We prove that this dynamics exhibits solitonic behavior and construct an explicit bijection $(P,Q) \leftrightarrow (H_1,H_2,κ,ν)$ that linearizes the time evolution. The resulting coordinates consist of two horizontally weak tableaux $H_1,H_2$ recording the asymptotic soliton data, integer riggings $κ$, and a weakly decreasing sequence of integers $ν$. A key feature of the construction is an explicit projection from the skew column RSK dynamics to the classical box-ball system; under this projection, the rigging $κ$ is precisely the Kerov--Kirillov--Reshetikhin rigging of the associated box-ball configuration. Our proof uses two commuting affine crystal structures on pairs of skew tableaux and a novel connectivity theorem for distinguished subgraphs of tensor products of Kirillov--Reshetikhin crystals. We also derive Greene-type formulas for the soliton lengths in terms of last-passage percolation on the associated cylindrical environment. Finally, by taking generating functions in the linearizing coordinates, we obtain bijective proofs of Cauchy and Kawanaka--Littlewood-type identities for transformed Hall--Littlewood polynomials.

On the Boson-Fermion Correspondence for Factorial Schur Functions
We give an algebraic (non-analytic) proof of the deformed boson-fermion Fock space construction of Molev's double supersymmetric Schur functions, among other results, from our previous paper. In other words, we make no assumptions on the variables and parameters. By specializing to a finite number of variables and shifting parameters, we recover the factorial Schur functions. Furthermore, we realize the bosonic construction through a representation of a completion of the infinite rank general linear Lie algebra.

Twisted multiline queues for the steady states of TASEP and TAZRP
Published in Electron. J. Probab., 30 (2025) pp. 1-31 • View PublicationBIB
We define an algorithm on fermionic and bosonic twisted multiline queues that projects to the multispecies totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP) and the totally asymmetric zero range process (TAZRP) on a ring, respectively. Our algorithm on fermionic multiline queues generalizes the Ferrari-Martin algorithm for TASEP, and we show it is equivalent to the algorithm of Arita-Ayyer-Mallick-Prolhac (2011). Our algorithm on bosonic multiline queues is novel and generalizes the corresponding algorithm of Kuniba-Maruyama-Okado (2016) for the TAZRP. We also define a Markov process on bosonic twisted multiline queues that projects to the TAZRP and intertwines with the symmetric group action on the rows of the multiline queues.

Factorial Fock free fermions
We use a double shifted power analog of free fermion fields to introduce current operators, Hamiltonians, and vertex operators which are deformed by two families of parameters and satisfy analogous formulas to the classical case. We show that the deformed half vertex operators correspond to the row transfer matrices of a solvable six vertex model recently given by Naprienko [arXiv:2301.12110], which under a specialization yields the factorial Schur functions (up to a reindexing of parameters). As a consequence, we show that under the boson-fermion correspondence using our deformed half vertex operators, the natural basis (under this specialization) maps to the double factorial Schur functions. Furthermore, the image of the natural basis vectors are tau function solutions to the 2D Toda lattice.

A strange five vertex model and multispecies ASEP on a ring
We revisit the problem of constructing the stationary states of the multispecies asymmetric simple exclusion process on a one-dimensional periodic lattice. Central to our approach is a quantum oscillator weighted five vertex model which features a strange weight conservation distinct from the conventional one. Our results clarify the interrelations among several known results and refine their derivations. For instance, the stationary probability derived from the multiline queue construction by Martin (2020) and Corteel--Mandelshtam--Williams (2022) is identified with the partition function of a three-dimensional system. The matrix product operators by Prolhac--Evans--Mallick (2009) acquire a natural diagrammatic interpretation as corner transfer matrices (CTM). The origin of their recursive tensor structure, as questioned by Aggarwal--Nicoletti--Petrov (2023), is revealed through the CTM diagrams. Finally, the derivation of the Zamolodchikov--Faddeev algebra by Cantini--de Gier--Wheeler (2015) is made intrinsic by elucidating its precise connection to a solution to the Yang--Baxter equation originating from quantum group representations.
Limit shapes and fluctuations for $(GL_n, GL_k)$ skew Howe duality
We consider the probability measures on Young diagrams in the $n \times k$ rectangle obtained by piecewise-continuously differentiable specializations of Schur polynomials in the dual Cauchy identity. We use a free fermionic representation of the correlation kernel to study its asymptotic behavior and derive the uniform convergence to a limit shape of Young diagrams in the limit $n,k \to \infty$. More specifically, we show the bulk is the discrete sine kernel with boundary fluctuations generically given by the Tracy-Widom distribution with the Airy kernel. When our limit shape touches the boundary corner of the rectangle, the fluctuations with a second order correction are given by the discrete Hermite kernel, and we recover the discrete distribution of Gravner-Tracy-Widom (2001) [arXiv:math/0005133] restricting to the leading order. Finally, we demonstrate our limit shapes can have sections with no or full density of particles, where the Pearcey kernel appears when such a section is infinitely small.

Free fermionic probability theory and K-theoretic Schubert calculus
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma 13 (2025) e197 • View PublicationBIB
For each of the four particle processes given by Dieker and Warren [arXiv:0707.1843], we show the $n$-step transition kernels are given by the (dual) (weak) refined symmetric Grothendieck functions up to a simple overall factor. We do so by encoding the particle dynamics as the basis of free fermions first introduced by the first author, which we translate into deformed Schur operators acting on partitions. We provide a direct combinatorial proof of this relationship in each case, where the defining tableaux naturally describe the particle motions.

Crystals for shifted key polynomials
Published in Algebras and Representation Theory 28 (2025), 921-979 • View PublicationBIB
This article continues our study of $P$- and $Q$-key polynomials, which are (non-symmetric) "partial" Schur $P$- and $Q$-functions as well as "shifted" versions of key polynomials. Our main results provide a crystal interpretation of $P$- and $Q$-key polynomials, namely, as the characters of certain connected subcrystals of normal crystals associated to the queer Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{q}_n$. In the $P$-key case, the ambient normal crystals are the $\mathfrak{q}_n$-crystals studied by Grantcharov et al., while in the $Q$-key case, these are replaced by the extended $\mathfrak{q}_n$-crystals recently introduced by the first author and Tong. Using these constructions, we propose a crystal-theoretic lift of several conjectures about the decomposition of involution Schubert polynomials into $P$- and $Q$-key polynomials. We verify these generalized conjectures in a few special cases. Along the way, we establish some miscellaneous results about normal $\mathfrak{q}_n$-crystals and Demazure $\mathfrak{gl}_n$-crystals.

Key and Lascoux polynomials for symmetric orbit closures
We introduce shifted analogues of key polynomials related to symplectic and orthogonal orbit closures in the complete flag variety. Our definitions are given by applying isobaric divided difference operators to the analogues of Schubert polynomials for orbit closures that correspond to dominant involutions. We show that our shifted key polynomials are linear combinations of key polynomials with nonnegative integer coefficients. We also prove that they are partial versions of the classical Schur $P$- and $Q$-polynomials. Finally, we examine $K$-theoretic generalizations of these functions, which give shifted forms of Lascoux polynomials. In the symplectic case, these generalizations are partial versions of the $GP$-polynomials introduced by Ikeda and Naruse. Besides developing basic properties, we identify a number of conjectures and open problems.

Limit shapes for skew Howe duality
We study large random partitions boxed into a rectangle and coming from skew Howe duality, or alternatively from dual Schur measures. As the sides of the rectangle go to infinity, we obtain: 1) limit shape results for the profiles generalizing the Vershik--Kerov--Logan--Shepp curve; and 2) universal edge asymptotic results for the first parts in the form of the Tracy--Widom distribution, as well as less-universal critical regime results introduced by Gravner, Tracy and Widom. We do this for a large class of Schur parameters going beyond the Plancherel or principal specializations previously studied in the literature, parametrized by two real valued functions $f$ and $g$. Connections to a Bernoulli model of (last passage) percolation are explored.

Cellular subalgebras of the partition algebra
Published in J. Combin. Algebra, online first (2023) • View PublicationBIB
We describe various diagram algebras and their representation theory using cellular algebras of Graham and Lehrer and the decomposition into half diagrams. In particular, we show the diagram algebras surveyed here are all cellular algebras and parameterize their cell modules. We give a new construction to build new cellular algebras from a general cellular algebra and subalgebras of the rook Brauer algebra that we call the cellular wreath product.

We give a presentation of refined (dual) canonical Grothendieck polynomials and their skew versions using free-fermions. Using this, we derive a number of identities, including the skew Cauchy identities, branching rules, expansion formulas, and integral formulas.
Crystal invariant theory II: Pseudo-energies
The geometric crystal operators and geometric $R$-matrices (or geometric Weyl group actions) give commuting actions on the field of rational functions in $mn$ variables. We study the invariants of various combinations of these actions, which we view as "crystal analogues" of the invariants of $S_m$, ${\rm SL}_m$, $S_n \times S_m$, ${\rm SL}_n \times \, S_m$, and ${\rm SL}_n \times {\rm SL}_m$ acting on the polynomial ring in an $m \times n$ matrix of variables. The polynomial invariants of the $S_m$-action generated by the ${\rm GL}_m$-geometric $R$-matrices were described by Lam and the third-named author as the ring of loop symmetric functions. In a previous paper of the authors, the polynomial invariants of the ${\rm GL}_m$-geometric crystal operators were described as a subring of the ring of loop symmetric functions. In this paper, we give conjectural generating sets for the fields of rational invariants in the remaining cases, and we give formulas expressing a large class of loop symmetric functions in terms of these conjectural generators. Our results include new positive formulas for the central charge and energy function of a product of single-row geometric crystals, and a new derivation of Kirillov and Berenstein's piecewise-linear formula for cocharge. The formulas manifest the symmetries possessed by these functions.

Integrable systems and crystals for edge labeled tableaux
Published in J. Algebra, 644 (2024), pp. 152-190 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the edge Schur functions $E^λ$ that are defined as a generating series over edge labeled tableaux. We formulate $E^λ$ as the partition function for a solvable lattice model, which we use to show they are symmetric polynomials and derive a Cauchy-type identity with factorial Schur polynomials. Finally, we give a crystal structure on edge labeled tableau to give a positive Schur polynomial expansion of $E^λ$ and show it intertwines with an uncrowding algorithm.
Crystal invariant theory I: Geometric RSK
Published • View PublicationBIB
Berenstein and Kazhdan's theory of geometric crystals gives rise to two commuting families of geometric crystal operators acting on the space of complex $m \times n$ matrices. These are birational actions, which we view as a crystal-theoretic analogue of the usual action of ${\rm SL}_m \times {\rm SL}_n$ on $m \times n$ matrices. We prove that the field of rational invariants (and ring of polynomial invariants) of each family of geometric crystal operators is generated by a set of algebraically independent polynomials, which are generalizations of the elementary symmetric polynomials in $m$ (or $n$) variables. We also give a set of algebraically independent generators for the intersection of these fields, and we explain how these fields are situated inside the larger fields of geometric $R$-matrix invariants, which were studied by Lam and the third-named author under the name loop symmetric functions. The key tool in our proof is the geometric RSK correspondence of Noumi and Yamada, which we show to be an isomorphism of geometric crystals. In an appendix jointly written with Thomas Lam, we prove the fundamental theorem of loop symmetric functions, which says that the polynomial invariants of the geometric $R$-matrix are generated by the loop elementary symmetric functions.

Skew Howe duality and limit shapes of Young diagrams
Published in J. Lond. Math. Soc., 2023 • View PublicationBIB
We consider the skew Howe duality for the action of certain dual pairs of Lie groups $(G_1, G_2)$ on the exterior algebra $\bigwedge(\mathbb{C}^{n} \otimes \mathbb{C}^{k})$ as a probability measure on Young diagrams by the decomposition into the sum of irreducible representations. We prove a combinatorial version of this skew Howe for the pairs $(\mathrm{GL}_{n}, \mathrm{GL}_{k})$, $(\mathrm{SO}_{2n+1}, \mathrm{Pin}_{2k})$, $(\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}, \mathrm{Sp}_{2k})$, and $(\mathrm{Or}_{2n}, \mathrm{SO}_{k})$ using crystal bases, which allows us to interpret the skew Howe duality as a natural consequence of lattice paths on lozenge tilings of certain partial hexagonal domains. The $G_1$-representation multiplicity is given as a determinant formula using the Lindström-Gessel-Viennot lemma and as a product formula using Dodgson condensation. These admit natural $q$-analogs that we show equals the $q$-dimension of a $G_2$-representation (up to an overall factor of $q$), giving a refined version of the combinatorial skew Howe duality. Using these product formulas (at $q =1$), we take the infinite rank limit and prove the diagrams converge uniformly to the limit shape.

Quasi-solvable lattice models for $\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}$ and $\mathrm{SO}_{2n+1}$ Demazure atoms and characters
Published in Forum Math. Sigma 10 (2022) e53 • View PublicationBIB
We construct colored lattice models whose partition functions represent symplectic and odd orthogonal Demazure characters and atoms. We show that our lattice models are not solvable, but we are able to show the existence of sufficiently many solutions of the Yang--Baxter equation that allows us to compute functional equations for the corresponding partition functions. From these functional equations, we determine that the partition function of our models are the Demazure atoms and characters for the symplectic and odd orthogonal Lie groups. We coin our lattice models as quasi-solvable. We use the natural bijection of admissible states in our models with Proctor patterns to give a right key algorithm for reverse King tableaux and Sundaram tableaux.

Refined dual Grothendieck polynomials, integrability, and the Schur measure
Published • View PublicationBIB
We construct a vertex model whose partition function is a refined dual Grothendieck polynomial, where the states are interpreted as nonintersecting lattice paths. Using this, we show refined dual Grothendieck polynomials are multi-Schur functions and give a number of identities, including a Littlewood and Cauchy(-Littlewood) identity. We then refine Yeliussizov's connection between dual Grothendieck polynomials and the last passage percolation (LPP) stochastic process discussed by Johansson. By refining algebraic techniques of Johansson, we show Jacobi-Trudi formulas for skew refined dual Grothendieck polynomials conjectured by Grinberg and recover a relation between LPP and the Schur process due to Baik and Rains. Lastly, we extend our vertex model techniques to show some identities for refined Grothendieck polynomials, including a Jacobi-Trudi formula.
