Skew column RSK dynamics and the box-ball system
The Fomin local rules for Schensted column insertion can be seen as a two-lane box-ball system, in which a carrier moves particles forward or laterally. Running such two-lane dynamics in parallel on a periodic lattice gives rise to a two-dimensional generalization of the box-ball system, which we call the \emph{skew column RSK dynamics}. Equivalently, this is a deterministic dynamics on pairs of skew semistandard Young tableaux $(P_t,Q_t)_{t \in \mathbb{Z}}$. We prove that this dynamics exhibits solitonic behavior and construct an explicit bijection $(P,Q) \leftrightarrow (H_1,H_2,κ,ν)$ that linearizes the time evolution. The resulting coordinates consist of two horizontally weak tableaux $H_1,H_2$ recording the asymptotic soliton data, integer riggings $κ$, and a weakly decreasing sequence of integers $ν$. A key feature of the construction is an explicit projection from the skew column RSK dynamics to the classical box-ball system; under this projection, the rigging $κ$ is precisely the Kerov--Kirillov--Reshetikhin rigging of the associated box-ball configuration. Our proof uses two commuting affine crystal structures on pairs of skew tableaux and a novel connectivity theorem for distinguished subgraphs of tensor products of Kirillov--Reshetikhin crystals. We also derive Greene-type formulas for the soliton lengths in terms of last-passage percolation on the associated cylindrical environment. Finally, by taking generating functions in the linearizing coordinates, we obtain bijective proofs of Cauchy and Kawanaka--Littlewood-type identities for transformed Hall--Littlewood polynomials.
Kirillov-Reshetikhin Dual Equivalence Graphs
Let $U$ be a tensor product of highest weight modules of $GL_n(\mathbb C)$ corresponding to multiples of fundamental weights (i.e. rectangles). We consider three ways to stratify $U^{\otimes k}$ into components: using isotypic components of the cyclic action on tensor factors, using a generalization of the charge statistic, and using certain generalizations of Assaf's dual equivalence graphs. We conjecture that all three ways coincide, and we prove that the latter two ways coincide. The Kirillov-Reshetikhin dual equivalence graphs (KR DEGs) we introduce for this purpose are defined on $0$-weight spaces of tensor products of Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals. They generalize Kazhdan-Lusztig dual equivalence graphs (KL DEGs) that previously appeared in the study of Kazhdan-Lusztig cells in affine type A. While the tensor products of Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals are connected as affine crystals, the KR DEGs in general are not.

On the Polytope Model and Near End node Isomorphisms of Type $A$ Kirillov--Reshetikhin Crystals
We prove an inductive formula to construct a path from the highest weight element to any given vertex in the crystal graph of the polytope realization of the Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystal $KR^{i,m}$ of type $A$. For $i \leq 2$ or $i \geq n-1$, we provide explicit formulas of the same by only using the lowering crystal operators and in those cases, using these paths, we determine the explicit image of any element under the affine crystal isomorphisms between the polytope and the tableau realizations of the Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals.

Grounded partitions of type $A_1^{(1)}$ at levels 1 and 2: bijections, affine crystal graphs, and partition identities
Grounded partitions, introduced by Dousse and Konan, are coloured partitions satisfying difference conditions given by a matrix with nonnegative integer entries. For the matrices studied in this paper, the generating functions are known to be infinite products, corresponding to the principal specialisation of characters of highest weight modules of type $A_1^{(1)}$. We give the first bijective proof that the generating functions of grounded partitions at level $2$ are infinite products. We then give a new combinatorial model for affine crystal graphs of type $A_1^{(1)}$ at level $2$, where the vertices are grounded partitions and the arrows are given by explicit bracketing rules. The grounded partition model for affine crystal graphs of highest weights $Λ_0$, $Λ_1$ and $Λ_0 + Λ_1$ gives rise to new $q$-series identities obtained by decomposing the affine crystal graphs into the crystal graphs of finite type $A_1$ via the restricted representation.

On Combinatorial Models for Affine Crystals
The tableau model for Kirillov-Reshetikhin (KR) crystals, which are finite dimensional crystals corresponding to certain affine Lie algebras, is commonly used for its ease of crystal operator calculations. However, its simplicity makes quite complex the calculation of statistics such as: keys (used to express Demazure characters), the crystal energy function (an affine grading on tensor products of KR crystals), and the combinatorial R-matrix (an affine crystal isomorphism permuting factors in a tensor product of KR crystals). It has been shown that these calculations are much simpler with the added structure in the quantum alcove model for KR crystals. In this paper, we give an explicit description of the crystal isomorphism between the mentioned realizations of KR crystals in all classical Lie types.
Skew RSK dynamics: Greene invariants, affine crystals and applications to $q$-Whittaker polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
Iterating the skew RSK correspondence discovered by Sagan and Stanley in the late '80s, we define a deterministic dynamics on the space of pairs of skew Young tableaux $(P,Q)$. We find that this skew RSK dynamics displays conservation laws which, in the picture of Viennot's shadow line construction, identify generalizations of Greene invariants. The introduction of a novel realization of $0$-th Kashiwara operators reveals that the skew RSK dynamics possesses symmetries induced by an affine bicrystal structure, which, combined with connectedness properties of Demazure crystals, leads to its linearization. Studying asymptotic evolution of the dynamics started from a pair of skew tableaux $(P,Q)$, we discover a new bijection $Υ: (P,Q) \mapsto (V,W; κ, ν)$. Here $(V,W)$ is a pair of vertically strict tableaux, i.e., column strict filling of Young diagrams with no condition on rows, with shape prescribed by the Greene invariant, $κ$ is an array of non-negative weights and $ν$ is a partition. An application of this construction is the first bijective proof of Cauchy and Littlewood identities involving $q$-Whittaker polynomials. New identities relating sums of $q$-Whittaker and Schur polynomials are also presented.

A combinatorial realization of Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals for type E arising from translations
Published in Journal of Algebra, 595, (2022), 660-694 • View PublicationBIB
The main purpose of this paper is to give a combinatorial realization of Kirillov-Reshetikhin (KR simply) crystals $B^{r, s}$ for type $\text{E}_n^{(1)}$ with a minuscule node $r$ and $s \ge 1$. To do this, we describe explicitly the crystal of the quantum nilpotent subalgebra associated with the translation by the negative of the $r$-th fundamental weight. Then the crystal can be extended as an affine crystal, in which a certain subcrystal characterized by the $\varepsilon_r^*$-statistic is isomorphic to $B^{r,s}$ as an affine crystal, where $\varepsilon_r^*$ is also realized precisely in terms of triple and quadruple paths.

On Combinatorial Models for Affine Crystals
We biject two combinatorial models for tensor products of (single-column) Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals of any classical type $A-D$: the quantum alcove model and the tableau model. This allows us to translate calculations in the former model (of the energy function, the combinatorial $R$-matrix, etc.) to the latter, which is simpler.

Nakajima quiver varieties, affine crystals and combinatorics of Auslander-Reiten quivers
Published in Algebra Discrete Math. 34 (2022), no. 2, 244-272 • View PublicationBIB
We obtain an explicit crystal isomorphism between two realizations of crystal bases of finite dimensional irreducible representations of simple Lie algebras of type A and D. The first realization we consider is a geometric construction in terms of irreducible components of certain Nakajima quiver varieties established by Saito and the second is a realization in terms of isomorphism classes of quiver representations obtained by Reineke. We give a homological description of the irreducible components of Lusztig's quiver varieties which correspond to the crystal of a finite dimensional representation and describe the promotion operator in type A to obtain a geometric realization of Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals.

Quantum nilpotent subalgebras of classical quantum groups and affine crystals
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, 168, (2019), 219-254 • View PublicationBIB
We study the crystal of quantum nilpotent subalgebra of $U_q(D_n)$ associated to a maximal Levi subalgebra of type $A_{n-1}$. We show that it has an affine crystal structure of type $D_n^{(1)}$ isomorphic to a limit of perfect Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystal $B^{n,s}$ for $s\geq 1$, and give a new polytope realization of $B^{n,s}$. We show that an analogue of RSK correspondence for type $D$ due to Burge is an isomorphism of affine crystals and give a generalization of Greene's formula for type $D$.

The geometric $R$-matrix for affine crystals of type $A$
Published • View PublicationBIB
In [Frieden, arXiv:1706.02844], we constructed a geometric crystal on the variety $\mathbb{X}_{k} := {\rm Gr}(k,n) \times \mathbb{C}^\times$ which tropicalizes to the affine crystal structure on rectangular tableaux with $n-k$ rows. In this sequel, we define and study the geometric $R$-matrix, a birational map $R : \mathbb{X}_{k_1} \times \mathbb{X}_{k_2} \rightarrow \mathbb{X}_{k_2} \times \mathbb{X}_{k_1}$ which tropicalizes to the combinatorial $R$-matrix on pairs of rectangular tableaux. We show that $R$ is an isomorphism of geometric crystals, and that it satisfies the Yang--Baxter relation. In the case where both tableaux have one row, we recover a birational action of the symmetric group that has appeared in the literature in a number of contexts. We also define a rational function $E : \mathbb{X}_{k_1} \times \mathbb{X}_{k_2} \rightarrow \mathbb{C}$ which tropicalizes to the coenergy function from affine crystal theory. Most of the properties of the geometric $R$-matrix follow from the fact that it gives the unique solution to a certain equation of matrices in the loop group ${\rm GL}_n(\mathbb{C}(λ))$.

Weight multiplicities and Young tableaux through affine crystals
Published • View PublicationBIB
The weight multiplicities of finite dimensional simple Lie algebras can be computed individually using various methods. Still, it is hard to derive explicit closed formulas. Similarly, explicit closed formulas for the multiplicities of maximal weights of affine Kac--Moody algebras are not known in most cases. In this paper, we study weight multiplicities for both finite and affine cases of classical types for certain infinite families of highest weights modules. We introduce new classes of Young tableaux, called the {\em $($spin$)$ rigid tableaux}, and prove that they are equinumerous to the weight multiplicities of the highest weight modules under our consideration. These new classes of Young tableaux arise from crystal basis elements for dominant maximal weights of the integrable highest weight modules over affine Kac--Moody algebras. By applying combinatorics of tableaux such as the Robinson--Schensted algorithm and new insertion schemes, and using integrals over orthogonal groups, we reveal hidden structures in the sets of weight multiplicities and obtain explicit closed formulas for the weight multiplicities. In particular we show that some special families of weight multiplicities form the Pascal, Catalan, Motzkin, Riordan and Bessel triangles.

A crystal to rigged configuration bijection and the filling map for type $D_4^{(3)}$
Published in J. Algebra 448C (2016), pp. 294-349 • View PublicationBIB
We give a bijection $Φ$ from rigged configurations to a tensor product of Kirillov--Reshetikhin crystals of the form $B^{r,1}$ and $B^{1,s}$ in type $D_4^{(3)}$. We show that the cocharge statistic is sent to the energy statistic for tensor products $\bigotimes_{i=1}^N B^{r_i,1}$ and $\bigotimes_{i=1}^N B^{1,s_i}$. We extend this bijection to a single $B^{r,s}$, show that it preserves statistics, and obtain the so-called Kirillov--Reshetikhin tableaux model for $B^{r,s}$. Additionally, we show that $Φ$ commutes with the virtualization map and that $B^{1,s}$ is naturally a virtual crystal in type $D_4^{(1)}$, thus defining an affine crystal structure on rigged configurations corresponding to $B^{1,s}$.

A uniform realization of the combinatorial $R$-matrix
Published • View PublicationBIB
Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals are colored directed graphs encoding the structure of certain finite-dimensional representations of affine Lie algebras. A tensor products of column shape Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals has recently been realized in a uniform way, for all untwisted affine types, in terms of the quantum alcove model. We enhance this model by using it to give a uniform realization of the combinatorial $R$-matrix, i.e., the unique affine crystal isomorphism permuting factors in a tensor product of KR crystals. In other words, we are generalizing to all Lie types Schützenberger's sliding game (jeu de taquin) for Young tableaux, which realizes the combinatorial $R$-matrix in type $A$. Our construction is in terms of certain combinatorial moves, called quantum Yang-Baxter moves, which are explicitly described by reduction to the rank 2 root systems. We also show that the quantum alcove model does not depend on the choice of a sequence of alcoves joining the fundamental one to a translation of it.

A generalization of the alcove model and its applications
Published • View PublicationBIB
The alcove model of the first author and A. Postnikov uniformly describes highest weight crystals of semisimple Lie algebras. We construct a generalization, called the quantum alcove model. In joint work of the first author with S. Naito, D. Sagaki, A. Schilling, and M. Shimozono, this was shown to uniformly describe tensor products of column shape Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals in all untwisted affine types; moreover, an efficient formula for the corresponding energy function is available. In the second part of this paper, we specialize the quantum alcove model to types $A$ and $C$. We give explicit affine crystal isomorphisms from the specialized quantum alcove model to the corresponding tensor products of column shape Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals, which are realized in terms of Kashiwara-Nakashima columns.

We give a new combinatorial model of the Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals of type $A_n^{(1)}$ in terms of non-negative integral matrices based on the classical RSK algorithm, which has a simple description of the affine crystal structure without using a promotion operator. We also have a similar description of the Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals associated to exceptional nodes in the Dynkin diagrams of classical affine or non-exceptional type.

Affine crystal structure on rigged configurations of type D_n^(1)
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics 37 (2013) 571--599 • View PublicationBIB
Extending the work arXiv:math/0508107, we introduce the affine crystal action on rigged configurations which is isomorphic to the Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystal B^{r,s} of type D_n^(1) for any r,s. We also introduce a representation of B^{r,s} (r not equal to n-1,n) in terms of tableaux of rectangular shape r x s, which we coin Kirillov-Reshetikhin tableaux (using a non-trivial analogue of the type A column splitting procedure) to construct a bijection between elements of a tensor product of Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals and rigged configurations.

Excursions into Algebra and Combinatorics at $q=0$
We explore combinatorics associated with the degenerate Hecke algebra at $q=0$, obtaining a formula for a system of orthogonal idempotents, and also exploring various pattern avoidance results. Generalizing constructions for the 0-Hecke algebra, we explore the representation theory of $\JJ$-trivial monoids. We then discuss two-tensors of crystal bases for $U_q(\tilde{\mathfrak{sl}_2})$, establishing a complementary result to one of Bandlow, Schilling, and Thiéry on affine crystals arising from promotion operators. Finally, we give a computer implementation of Stembridge's local axioms for simply-laced crystal bases.

Crystal energy functions via the charge in types A and C
Published in Mathematische Zeitschrift 273(1) (2013) 401-426 • View PublicationBIB
The Ram-Yip formula for Macdonald polynomials (at t=0) provides a statistic which we call charge. In types A and C it can be defined on tensor products of Kashiwara-Nakashima single column crystals. In this paper we prove that the charge is equal to the (negative of the) energy function on affine crystals. The algorithm for computing charge is much simpler and can be more efficiently computed than the recursive definition of energy in terms of the combinatorial R-matrix.

From Macdonald Polynomials to a Charge Statistic beyond Type A
Published • View PublicationBIB
The charge is an intricate statistic on words, due to Lascoux and Schutzenberger, which gives positive combinatorial formulas for Lusztig's q-analogue of weight multiplicities and the energy function on affine crystals, both of type A. As these concepts are defined for all Lie types, it has been a long-standing problem to express them based on a generalization of charge. I present a method for addressing this problem in classical Lie types, based on the recent Ram-Yip formula for Macdonald polynomials and the quantum Bruhat order on the corresponding Weyl group. The details of the method are carried out in type A (where we recover the classical charge) and type C (where we define a new statistic).
