Borsuk-Ulam type theorem for the orthogonal group and orthogonal four-partitions
Given a finite Borel measure $μ$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$, when can one find $d$ mutually orthogonal hyperplanes such that \emph{every pair} of them cuts $μ$ into four equal parts? Makeev [2] stated this result and outlined a proof strategy, but the key steps were left incomplete. We give the first complete proof. The key step is a Borsuk--Ulam-type theorem for the orthogonal group~$O(k)$: every continuous equivariant map from~$O(k)$ to a certain representation of the hyperoctahedral group~$B_k$ must vanish somewhere. We construct an explicit model map whose zero set consists of exactly one free $B_k$-orbit --- the set of all signed eigenbases of a fixed generic self-adjoint operator~$A$ --- verify nondegeneracy by an explicit derivative calculation, and conclude by the equivariant degree principle. The proof requires only linear algebra and elementary topology. The four-partition theorem follows immediately: the orthogonal hyperplanes are encoded as a frame in $O(d)$, and the equivariant map records the imbalance of $μ$ across each pair of hyperplanes. A zero of this map is the desired configuration. The result is a special case of a general zero theorem for Stiefel manifolds proved in [5] by different methods.

Schur polynomials twisted by roots of unity and reciprocal pairs: torsion filters, fusion quotients, and an equal-rank reduction at odd order
Write $μ_t$ for all $t$-th roots of unity and $z^{\pm1}$ for $r$ free reciprocal pairs. We study $Φ_{t,r}(β)=s_λ(μ_t,z^{\pm1})$, $β=λ+δ$, and the question the companion paper left open after $r=1$: when does it vanish? We factor the evaluation into classical branching followed by a torsion filter, and the shape depends on the parity of $t$: the point lies in the orthogonal group with determinant $(-1)^{t+1}$. For odd $t$ it sits in the identity component: an ordinary restriction $SO_{2R'+1}\downarrow SO_{2m'+1}\times SO_{2r}$, the filter an odd orthogonal character at a principal element of order $h+1$. For even $t$ in the other: a twining, a virtual expansion, and a torsion element regular but not principal; there we prove the filter, with its sign. One description covers both: the filter is nonzero exactly when the shifted torsion point is regular semisimple in the group. Both are minimal-level fusion projections: the even of type $C$, the tensor sector of the odd of type $B$. Affine folding accounts for the values $0,\pm1$; what it does not survives as conjectures. The highest surviving weight is the dominant vertex of the numerator's Newton polytope minus the denominator's, the latter proved here, the former conditional on a single-orbit property; and the class there --- virtual for even $t$, a genuine multiplicity space for odd --- is conjecturally primitive, $\pm$ the generator of the rank-one quotient. For odd $t$ and one $Λ$ that numerator is a signed transversal count in $\{0,\pm1\}$ by the equal-rank character formula, leaving one division. We invert it in closed form, as a sum along an arithmetic progression of step $2t$; the quotient is $\pmε_t\det M$ for an explicit $0/{\pm}1$ matrix, so total unimodularity of $M$ would settle it. Two extremal statements remain. Everything unproved here is measured, in both parities.

On the proportion of derangements in affine classical groups
We derive explicit formulas for the proportion of derangements and of derangements of $p$-power order in the affine unitary group $AU_m(q)$ over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$ of characteristic $p$. Both formulas rely on a result of independent interest concerning integer partitions: we obtain a generating function for partitions $λ=(λ_1, \dots, λ_m)$ into $m$ parts, for which $λ_1=1$ or there exists $k \in \{2, \dots,m\}$ such that $λ_{k-1}>λ_k=k$. Moreover, when $p$ is odd, we conjecture remarkably simple formulas for the proportions of derangements in the finite affine symplectic group $ASp_{2m}(q)$, and in the affine orthogonal groups $AO_{2m+1}(q)$ and $AO^{\pm}_{2m}(q)$, and we also propose conjectures for the proportions of derangements of $p$-power order. We further reduce the proofs of these conjectures to establishing three $q$-polynomial identities.

Orbits and equivariant local systems combinatorics in graded Lie algebras
In this paper, we will describe a combinatorial object to list the orbits in the ${\mathbb Z}$-graded Lie algebra, their Jordan bloc decomposition, their dimension, their dimension, the partial order and the equivariant local system (up to isomorphism) for four infinite families: two are for the symplectic groups and two are for the special orthogonal groups. These orbits and equivariant local systems appear in the study of perverse sheaves arising from graded Lie algebras.

Character factorisations, $z$-asymmetric partitions and plethysm
The Verschiebung operators $\varphi_t $ are a family of endomorphisms on the ring of symmetric functions, one for each integer $t\geq2$. Their action on the Schur basis has its origins in work of Littlewood and Richardson, and is intimately related with the decomposition of a partition into its $t$-core and $t$-quotient. Namely, they showed that the action on $s_λ$ is zero if the $t$-core of the indexing partition is nonempty, and otherwise it factors as a product of Schur functions indexed by the $t$-quotient. Much more recently, Lecouvey and, independently, Ayyer and Kumari have provided similar formulae for the characters of the symplectic and orthogonal groups, where again the combinatorics of cores and quotients plays a fundamental role. We embed all of these character factorisations in an infinite family involving an integer $z$ and parameter $q$ using a very general symmetric function defined by Hamel and King. The proof hinges on a new characterisation of the $t$-cores and $t$-quotients of $z$-asymmetric partitions which generalise the well-known classifications for self-conjugate and doubled distinct partitions. We also explain the connection between these results, plethysms of symmetric functions and characters of the symmetric group.

On some Grothendieck expansions
The complete flag variety admits a natural action by both the orthogonal group and the symplectic group. Wyser and Yong defined orthogonal Grothendieck polynomials $\mathfrak{G}^{\mathsf{O}}_z$ and symplectic Grothendieck polynomials $\mathfrak{G}^{\mathsf{Sp}}_z$ as the $K$-theory classes of the corresponding orbit closures. There is an explicit formula to expand $\mathfrak{G}^{\mathsf{Sp}}_z$ as a nonnegative sum of Grothendieck polynomials $\mathfrak{G}^{(β)}_w$, which represent the $K$-theory classes of Schubert varieties. Although the constructions of $\mathfrak{G}^{\mathsf{Sp}}_z$ and $\mathfrak{G}^{\mathsf{O}}_z$ are similar, finding the $\mathfrak{G}^{(β)}$-expansion of $\mathfrak{G}^{\mathsf{O}}_z$ or even computing $\mathfrak{G}^{\mathsf{O}}_z$ is much harder. If $z$ is vexillary then $\mathfrak{G}^{\mathsf{O}}_z$ has a nonnegative $\mathfrak{G}^{(β)}$-expansion, but the associated coefficients are mostly unknown. This paper derives several new formulas for $\mathfrak{G}^{\mathsf{O}}_z$ and its $\mathfrak{G}^{(β)}$-expansion when $z$ is vexillary. Among other applications, we prove that the latter expansion has a nontrivial stability property.

Murnaghan--Nakayama rules for symplectic, orthogonal and orthosymplectic Schur functions
Published in Discrete Mathematics, Volume 349, Issue 2, February 2026, 114741 • Search Publication
We establish new Murnaghan--Nakayama rules for symplectic, orthogonal and orthosymplectic Schur functions. The classical Murnaghan--Nakayama rule expresses the product of a power sum symmetric function with a Schur function as a linear combination of Schur functions. Symplectic and orthogonal Schur functions correspond to characters of irreducible representations of symplectic and orthogonal groups. Orthosymplectic Schur functions arise as characters of orthosymplectic Lie superalgebras and are hybrids of symplectic and ordinary Schur functions. We derive explicit formulas for the product of the relevant power-sum function with each of these functions, which can partly be described combinatorially using border strip manipulations. Our Murnaghan--Nakayama rules each include three distinct terms: a classical term corresponding to the addition of border strips to the relevant Young diagram, a term involving the removal of border strips, and a third term, which we describe both algebraically and combinatorially.

Orthogonal and symplectic orbits in the affine flag variety of type A
It is a classical result that the set $K\backslash G /B$ is finite, where $G$ is a reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field with characteristic not equal to two, $B$ is a Borel subgroup of $G$, and $K = G^θ$ is the fixed point subgroup of an involution of $G$. In this paper, we investigate the affine counterpart of the aforementioned set, where $G$ is the general linear group over formal Laurent series, $B$ is an Iwahori subgroup of $G$, and $K$ is either the orthogonal group or the symplectic group over formal Laurent series. We construct explicit bijections between the double cosets $K \backslash G/B$ and certain twisted affine involutions. This is the first combinatorial description of $K$-orbits in the affine flag variety of type A.

Symmetrizations of quadratic and hermitian forms
The paper develops elementary linear algebra methods to compute the determinants of the tensor symmetrizations of quadratic and hermitian forms over fields of good characteristic. Explicit results are given for the partitions $(n)$, $(1^n)$, $(2,1^{n-2})$ and $(3,1^{n-3})$ as well as for all partitions of $n\leq 7$. For orthogonal groups these symmetrizations are not irreducible and we continue to find the determinants of their irreducible constituents, the refined symmetrizations, over fields of characteristic 0.

Orbits of the hyperoctahedral group as Euclidean designs
Published in J. Algebraic Combinatorics, v. 2 (2007), pp. 375--397 • Search Publication
The hyperoctahedral group $H$ in $n$ dimensions (the Weyl group of Lie type $B_n$) is the subgroup of the orthogonal group generated by all transpositions of coordinates and reflections with respect to coordinate hyperplanes. A finite set ${\cal X} \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ with a weight function $w: {\cal X} \rightarrow \mathbb{R}^+$ is called a Euclidean $t$-design, if $$\sum_{r \in R} W_r \overline{f}_{S_{r}} = \sum_{{\bf x} \in {\cal X}} w({\bf x}) f({\bf x})$$ holds for every polynomial $f$ of total degree at most $t$; here $R$ is the set of norms of the points in ${\cal X}$, $W_r$ is the total weight of all elements of ${\cal X}$ with norm $r$, $S_r$ is the $n$-dimensional sphere of radius $r$ centered at the origin, and $\overline{f}_{S_{r}}$ is the average of $f$ over $S_{r}$. Here we consider Euclidean designs which are supported by orbits of the hyperoctahedral group. Namely, we prove that any Euclidean design on a union of generalized hyperoctahedra has strength (maximum $t$ for which it is a Euclidean design) equal to 3, 5, or 7. We find explicit necessary and sufficient conditions for when this strength is 5 and for when it is 7. In order to establish our classification, we translate the above definition of Euclidean designs to a single equation for $t=5$, a set of three equations for $t=7$, and a set of seven equations for $t=9$. Neumaier and Seidel (1988), as well as Delsarte and Seidel (1989), proved a Fisher-type inequality $|{\cal X}| \geq N(n,p,t)$ for the minimum size of a Euclidean $t$-design in $\mathbb{R}^n$ on $p=|R|$ concentric spheres (assuming that the design is antipodal if $t$ is odd). A Euclidean design with exactly $N(n,p,t)$ points is called tight. We exhibit new examples of antipodal tight Euclidean designs, supported by orbits of the hyperoctahedral group, for $N(n,p,t)=$(3,2,5), (3,3,7), and (4,2,7).

The distance function on Coxeter-like graphs and self-dual codes
Let $SGL_n(\mathbb{F}_2)$ be the set of all invertible $n\times n$ symmetric matrices over the binary field $\mathbb{F}_2$. Let $Γ_n$ be the graph with the vertex set $SGL_n(\mathbb{F}_2)$ where a pair of matrices $\{A,B\}$ form an edge if and only if $\textrm{rank}(A-B)=1$. In particular, $Γ_3$ is the well-known Coxeter graph. The distance function $d(A,B)$ in $Γ_n$ is described for all matrices $A,B\in SGL_n(\mathbb{F}_2)$. The diameter of $Γ_n$ is computed. For odd $n\geq 3$, it is shown that each matrix $A\in SGL_n(\mathbb{F}_2)$ such that $d(A,I)=\frac{n+5}{2}$ and $\textrm{rank}(A-I)=\frac{n+1}{2}$ where $I$ is the identity matrix induces a self-dual code in $\mathbb{F}_2^{n+1}$. Conversely, each self-dual code $C$ induces a family ${\cal F}_C$ of such matrices $A$. The families given by distinct self-dual codes are disjoint. The identification $C\leftrightarrow {\cal F}_C$ provides a graph theoretical description of self-dual codes. A result of Janusz (2007) is reproved and strengthened by showing that the orthogonal group ${\cal O}_n(\mathbb{F}_2)$ acts transitively on the set of all self-dual codes in $\mathbb{F}_2^{n+1}$.

Hook-Lengths, Symplectic/Orthogonal Contents and Amdeberhan's Conjectures
Published • View PublicationBIB
The symplectic/orthogonal contents of partitions are related to the dimensions of irreducible representations of symplectic/orthogonal groups. In 2012, motivated by Nekrasov--Okounkov's hook-length formula and Stanley's hook-content formula, Amdeberhan proposed several conjectures about infinite product formulas for certain generating functions of hook-lengths and symplectic/orthogonal contents. Some special cases of his conjectures were recently proved by Amdeberhan, Andrews and Ballantine. In this paper, we prove the general cases of Amdeberhan's conjectures.

Connection Heat Kernel On Connection Lattices And Connection Discrete Torus
By the connection graph we mean an underlying weighted graph with a connection which associates edge set with an orthogonal group. This paper centers its investigation on the connection heat kernels on connection lattices and connection discrete torus. For one dimensional connection lattice, we derive the connection heat kernel expression by doing the Taylor expansion on the exponential function involving normalized connection Laplacian. We introduce a novel connection called product connection and prove that the connection heat kernel on arbitrary high dimensional lattice with product connection equals the Kronecker sum of one dimensional connection lattices' connection heat kernels. Furthermore, if the connection graph is consistent, we substantiate the interrelation between its connection heat kernel and its underlying graph's heat kernel. We define a connection called quotient connection such that discrete torus with quotient connection can be considered as a quotient graph of connection lattice, whose connection heat kernel is demonstrated to be the sum of connection lattices' connection heat kernels. In addition, we derive an alternative expression of connection heat kernel on discrete torus whenever its quotient connection is a constant connection, yielding an equation as a connection graph's trace formula.

Planar networks and simple Lie groups beyond type A
The general linear group $GL_{n}$, along with its adjoint simple group $PGL_n$, can be described by means of weighted planar networks. In this paper we give a network description for simple Lie groups of types $B$ and $C$. The corresponding networks are axially symmetric modulo a sequence of cluster mutations along the axis of symmetry. We extend to this setting the result of Gekhtman, Shapiro, and Vainshtein on the Poisson property of Postnikov's boundary measurement map. We also show that $B$ and $C$ type networks with positive weights parametrize the totally nonnegative part of the respective group. Finally, we construct network parametrizations of double Bruhat cells in symplectic and odd-dimensional orthogonal groups, and identify the corresponding face weights with Fock-Goncharov cluster coordinates.
Skew symplectic and orthogonal characters through lattice paths
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 122 (2024), 104000 • View PublicationBIB
The skew Schur functions admit many determinantal expressions. Chief among them are the (dual) Jacobi-Trudi formula and the Lascoux-Pragacz formula, which is a skew analogue of the Giambelli identity. Comparatively, the skew characters of the symplectic and orthogonal groups, also known as the skew symplectic and orthogonal Schur functions, have received less attention in this direction. We establish analogues of the dual Jacobi-Trudi and Lascoux-Pragacz formulae for these characters. Our approach is entirely combinatorial, being based on lattice path descriptions of the tableaux models of Koike and Terada. Ordinary Jacobi-Trudi formulae are then derived in an algebraic manner from their duals.

An Algorithm for Computing with Brauer's Group Equivariant Neural Network Layers
The learnable, linear neural network layers between tensor power spaces of $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ that are equivariant to the orthogonal group, $O(n)$, the special orthogonal group, $SO(n)$, and the symplectic group, $Sp(n)$, were characterised in arXiv:2212.08630. We present an algorithm for multiplying a vector by any weight matrix for each of these groups, using category theoretic constructions to implement the procedure. We achieve a significant reduction in computational cost compared with a naive implementation by making use of Kronecker product matrices to perform the multiplication. We show that our approach extends to the symmetric group, $S_n$, recovering the algorithm of arXiv:2303.06208 in the process.

Generating functions for some series of characters of classical Lie groups
There exist a number of well known multiplicative generating functions for series of Schur functions. Amongst these are some related to the dual Cauchy identity whose expansion coefficients are rather simple, and in some cases periodic in parameters specifying the Schur functions. More recently similar identities have been found involving expansions in terms of characters of the symplectic group. Here these results are extended and generalised to all classical Lie groups. This is done through the derivation of explicit recurrence relations for the expansion coefficients based on the action of the Weyl groups of both the symplectic and orthogonal groups. Copious results are tabulated in the form of explicit values of the expansion coefficients as functions of highest weight parameters. An alternative approach is then based on dual pairs of symplectic and/or orthogonal groups. A byproduct of this approach is that expansions in terms of spin orthogonal group characters can always be recovered from non-spin cases.

Brauer's Group Equivariant Neural Networks
We provide a full characterisation of all of the possible group equivariant neural networks whose layers are some tensor power of $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ for three symmetry groups that are missing from the machine learning literature: $O(n)$, the orthogonal group; $SO(n)$, the special orthogonal group; and $Sp(n)$, the symplectic group. In particular, we find a spanning set of matrices for the learnable, linear, equivariant layer functions between such tensor power spaces in the standard basis of $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ when the group is $O(n)$ or $SO(n)$, and in the symplectic basis of $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ when the group is $Sp(n)$.
The Lasserre hierarchy for equiangular lines with a fixed angle
We compute the second and third levels of the Lasserre hierarchy for the spherical finite distance problem. A connection is used between invariants in representations of the orthogonal group and representations of the general linear group, which allows computations in high dimensions. We give new linear bounds on the maximum number of equiangular lines in dimension $n$ with common angle $\arccos α$. These are obtained through asymptotic analysis in $n$ of the semidefinite programming bound given by the second level.
