Mixed Dimer Models for Euler and Catalan Numbers
We study the enumeration of mixed dimer covers on skew Young diagrams of ribbon shape (also called border strips or snake graphs). For the two extreme cases of straight and zigzag shapes, we show that the number of mixed dimer covers are given by the Euler and Catalan numbers. We also give q-analogs by showing that the rank generating functions of the partial orders on mixed dimer covers agree with certain q-Euler and q-Catalan numbers. These q-analogs are a consequence of an isomorphism between the partial order on mixed dimer covers and the so-called middle order on certain classes of permutations.

Murnaghan--Nakayama rules for symplectic, orthogonal and orthosymplectic Schur functions
Published in Discrete Mathematics, Volume 349, Issue 2, February 2026, 114741 • View Publication • BIB
We establish new Murnaghan--Nakayama rules for symplectic, orthogonal and orthosymplectic Schur functions. The classical Murnaghan--Nakayama rule expresses the product of a power sum symmetric function with a Schur function as a linear combination of Schur functions. Symplectic and orthogonal Schur functions correspond to characters of irreducible representations of symplectic and orthogonal groups. Orthosymplectic Schur functions arise as characters of orthosymplectic Lie superalgebras and are hybrids of symplectic and ordinary Schur functions. We derive explicit formulas for the product of the relevant power-sum function with each of these functions, which can partly be described combinatorially using border strip manipulations. Our Murnaghan--Nakayama rules each include three distinct terms: a classical term corresponding to the addition of border strips to the relevant Young diagram, a term involving the removal of border strips, and a third term, which we describe both algebraically and combinatorially.

Minimal skew semistandard tableaux and the Hillman--Grassl correspondence
Published • View Publication • BIB
Standard tableaux of skew shape are fundamental objects in enumerative and algebraic combinatorics and no product formula for the number is known. In 2014, Naruse gave a formula (NHLF) as a positive sum over excited diagrams of products of hook-lengths. Subsequently, Morales, Pak, and Panova gave a $q$-analogue of this formula in terms of skew semistandard tableaux (SSYT). They also showed, partly algebraically, that the Hillman--Grassl map, restricted to skew semistandard tableaux, is behind their $q$-analogue. We study the problem of circumventing the algebraic part and proving the bijection completely combinatorially, which we do for border strips. For a skew shape, we define minimal semistandard Young tableaux, that are in correspondence with excited diagrams via a new description of the Hillman--Grassl bijection and have an analogue of excited moves. Lastly, we relate the minimal skew SSYT with the terms of the Okounkov-Olshanski formula (OOF) for counting standard tableaux of skew shape. Our construction immediately implies that the summands in the NHLF are less than the summands in the OOF and we characterize the shapes where both formulas have the same number of summands.

Poset modules of the $0$-Hecke algebras and related quasisymmetric power sum expansions
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics (2024) • View Publication • BIB
Duchamp--Hivert--Thibon introduced the construction of a right $H_n(0)$-module, denoted as $M_P$, for any partial order $P$ on the set $[n]$. This module is defined by specifying a suitable action of $H_n(0)$ on the set of linear extensions of $P$. In this paper, we refer to this module as the poset module associated with $P$. Firstly, we show that $\bigoplus_{n \ge 0} G_0(\mathscr{P}(n))$ has a Hopf algebra structure that is isomorphic to the Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric functions, where $\mathscr{P}(n)$ is the full subcategory of $\textbf{mod-}H_n(0)$ whose objects are direct sums of finitely many isomorphic copies of poset modules and $G_0(\mathscr{P}(n))$ is the Grothendieck group of $\mathscr{P}(n)$. We also demonstrate how (anti-)automorphism twists interact with these modules, the induction product and restrictions. Secondly, we investigate the (type 1) quasisymmetric power sum expansion of some quasi-analogues $Y_α$ of Schur functions, where $α$ is a composition. We show that they can be expressed as the sum of the $P$-partition generating functions of specific posets, which allows us to utilize the result established by Liu--Weselcouch. Additionally, we provide a new algorithm for obtaining these posets. Using these findings, for the dual immaculate function and the extended Schur function, we express the coefficients appearing in the quasisymmetric power sum expansions in terms of border strip tableaux.

A Refinement of the Murnaghan-Nakayama Rule by Descents for Border Strip Tableaux
Published • View Publication • BIB
Lusztig's fake degree is the generating polynomial for the major index of standard Young tableaux of a given shape. Results of Springer and James & Kerber imply that, mysteriously, its evaluation at a $k$-th primitive root of unity yields the number of border strip tableaux with all strips of size $k$, up to sign. This is essentially the special case of the Murnaghan-Nakayama rule for evaluating an irreducible character of the symmetric group at a rectangular partition. We refine this result to standard Young tableaux and border strip tableaux with a given number of descents. To do so, we introduce a new statistic for border strip tableaux, extending the classical definition of descents in standard Young tableaux. Curiously, it turns out that our new statistic is very closely related to a descent set for tuples of standard Young tableaux appearing in the quasisymmetric expansion of LLT polynomials given by Haglund, Haiman and Loehr.

A shifted Berenstein-Kirillov group and the cactus group
The Bender-Knuth involutions on semistandard Young tableaux are known to coincide with the tableau switching on horizontal border strips of two adjacent letters, together with the swapping of those letters. Motivated by this coincidence and using the shifted tableau switching due to Choi, Nam and Oh (2019), we consider a shifted version of the Bender-Knuth involutions and define a shifted version of the Berenstein-Kirillov group (1995). Similarly to the classical case, the shifted version of the Berenstein-Kirillov group also acts on the straight-shaped shifted tableau crystals introduced by Gillespie, Levinson and Purbhoo (2020), via partial Schützenberger involutions, thus coinciding with the action of the cactus group on the same crystal, due to the author. Following the works of Halacheva (2016, 2020), and Chmutov, Glick and Pylyavskyy (2020), on the relation between the actions of the Berenstein-Kirillov group and the cactus group on a crystal of straight-shaped Young tableaux, we also show that the shifted Berenstein-Kirillov group is isomorphic to a quotient of the cactus group. Not all the known relations that hold in the classic Berenstein-Kirillov group need to be satisfied by the shifted Bender-Knuth involutions, but the ones implying the relations of the cactus group are verified. Hence, we have an alternative presentation for the cactus group in terms of the shifted Bender-Knuth involutions. We also use the shifted growth diagrams due to Thomas and Yong (2016) to provide an alternative proof concerning the mentioned cactus group action.

Naruse hook formula for linear extensions of mobile posets
Published • View Publication • BIB
Linear extensions of posets are important objects in enumerative and algebraic combinatorics that are difficult to count in general. Families of posets like Young diagrams of straight shapes and $d$-complete posets have hook-length product formulas to count linear extensions, whereas families like Young diagrams of skew shapes have determinant or positive sum formulas like the Naruse hook-length formula from 2014. In 2020, Garver et. al. gave determinant formulas to count linear extensions of a family of posets called mobile posets that refine $d$-complete posets and border strip skew shapes. We give a Naruse type hook-length formula to count linear extensions of such posets by proving a major index $q$-analogue. We also a inversion index $q$-analogue of the Naruse formula for mobile tree posets.
Reverse plane partitions of skew staircase shapes and $q$-Euler numbers
Published • View Publication • BIB
Recently, Naruse discovered a hook length formula for the number of standard Young tableaux of a skew shape. Morales, Pak and Panova found two $q$-analogs of Naruse's hook length formula over semistandard Young tableaux (SSYTs) and reverse plane partitions (RPPs). As an application of their formula, they expressed certain $q$-Euler numbers, which are generating functions for SSYTs and RPPs of a zigzag border strip, in terms of weighted Dyck paths. They found a determinantal formula for the generating function for SSYTs of a skew staircase shape and proposed two conjectures related to RPPs of the same shape. One conjecture is a determinantal formula for the number of \emph{pleasant diagrams} in terms of Schröder paths and the other conjecture is a determinantal formula for the generating function for RPPs of a skew staircase shape in terms of $q$-Euler numbers. In this paper, we show that the results of Morales, Pak and Panova on the $q$-Euler numbers can be derived from previously known results due to Prodinger by manipulating continued fractions. These $q$-Euler numbers are naturally expressed as generating functions for alternating permutations with certain statistics involving \emph{maj}. It has been proved by Huber and Yee that these $q$-Euler numbers are generating functions for alternating permutations with certain statistics involving \emph{inv}. By modifying Foata's bijection we construct a bijection on alternating permutations which sends the statistics involving \emph{maj} to the statistic involving \emph{inv}. We also prove the aforementioned two conjectures of Morales, Pak and Panova.
Expansion of permutations as products of transpositions
We compute the number of ways a given permutation can be written as a product of exactly $k$ transpositions. We express this number as a linear combination of explicit geometric sequences, with coefficients which can be computed in many particular cases. Along the way we prove several symmetry properties for matrices associated with bipartite graphs, as well as some general (likely known) properties of Young diagrams. The methods involve linear algebra, enumeration of border strip tableau, and a differential operator on symmetric polynomials.

Hook formulas for skew shapes II. Combinatorial proofs and enumerative applications
Published in SIAM Journal of Discrete Math., 31 (2017), 1953--1989 • View Publication • BIB
The Naruse hook-length formula is a recent general formula for the number of standard Young tableaux of skew shapes, given as a positive sum over excited diagrams of products of hook-lengths. In 2015 we gave two different $q$-analogues of Naruse's formula: for the skew Schur functions, and for counting reverse plane partitions of skew shapes. In this paper we give an elementary proof of Naruse's formula based on the case of border strips. For special border strips, we obtain curious new formulas for the Euler and $q$-Euler numbers in terms of certain Dyck path summations.

Yangian-invariant spin models and Fibonacci numbers
Published in Ann. Phys.-New York 361 (2015) 520-547 • View Publication • BIB
We study a wide class of finite-dimensional su(m|n)-supersymmetric models closely related to the representations of the Yangian Y(sl(m|n)) labeled by border strips. We quantitatively analyze the degree of degeneracy of these models arising from their Yangian invariance, measured by the average degeneracy of the spectrum. We compute in closed form the minimum average degeneracy of any such model, and show that in the non-supersymmetric case it can be expressed in terms of generalized Fibonacci numbers. Using several properties of these numbers, we show that (except in the simpler su(1|1) case) the minimum average degeneracy grows exponentially with the number of spins. We apply our results to several well-known spin chains of Haldane-Shastry type, quantitatively showing that their degree of degeneracy is much higher than expected for a generic Yangian-invariant spin model. Finally, we show that the set of distinct levels of a Yangian-invariant spin model is described by an effective model of quasi-particles. We study this effective model, discussing its connections to one-dimensional anyons and properties of generalized Fibonacci numbers.

A Murnaghan-Nakayama Rule For Noncommutative Schur Functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove a Murnaghan-Nakayama rule for the noncommutative Schur functions introduced by Bessenrodt, Luoto and van Willigenburg. In other words, we give an explicit combinatorial formula for expanding the product of a noncommutative power sum symmetric function and a noncommutative Schur function in terms of noncommutative Schur functions. In direct analogy to the classical Murnaghan-Nakayama rule, the summands are computed using a noncommutative analogue of border strips, and have coefficients equal to 1 or -1 determined by the height of these border strips. The rule is proved by interpreting the noncommutative Pieri rules for noncommutative Schur functions in terms of box-adding operators on compositions.

The topology of restricted partition posets
Published in J. Algebraic Combin. 37 (2013), 643--666 • View Publication • BIB
For each composition $\vec{c}$ we show that the order complex of the poset of pointed set partitions $Π^{\bullet}_{\vec{c}}$ is a wedge of spheres of the same dimension with the multiplicity given by the number of permutations with descent composition $\vec{c}$. Furthermore, the action of the symmetric group on the top homology is isomorphic to the Specht module $S^{B}$ where $B$ is a border strip associated to the composition. We also study the filter of pointed set partitions generated by a knapsack integer partition and show the analogous results on homotopy type and action on the top homology.
Coincidences among skew Schur functions

New sufficient conditions and necessary conditions are developed for two skew diagrams to give rise to the same skew Schur function. The sufficient conditions come from a variety of new operations related to ribbons (also known as border strips or rim hooks). The necessary conditions relate to the extent of overlap among the rows or among the columns of the skew diagram.

The Zrank Conjecture and Restricted Cauchy Matrices
Published • View Publication • BIB
The rank of a skew partition $λ/μ$, denoted $rank(λ/μ)$, is the smallest number $r$ such that $λ/μ$ is a disjoint union of $r$ border strips. Let $s_{λ/μ}(1^t)$ denote the skew Schur function $s_{λ/μ}$ evaluated at $x_1=...=x_t=1, x_i=0$ for $i>t$. The zrank of $λ/μ$, denoted $zrank(λ/μ)$, is the exponent of the largest power of $t$ dividing $s_{λ/μ}(1^t)$. Stanley conjectured that $rank(λ/μ)=zrank(λ/μ)$. We show the equivalence between the validity of the zrank conjecture and the nonsingularity of restricted Cauchy matrices. In support of Stanley's conjecture we give affirmative answers for some special cases.
Transformations of Border Strips and Schur Function Determinants
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce the notion of the cutting strip of an outside decomposition of a skew shape, and show that cutting strips are in one-to-one correspondence with outside decompositions for a given skew shape. Outside decompositions are introduced by Hamel and Goulden and are used to give an identity for the skew Schur function that unifies the determinantal expressions for the skew Schur functions including the Jacobi-Trudi determinant, its dual, the Giambelli determinant and the rim ribbon determinant due to Lascoux and Pragacz. Using cutting strips, one obtains a formula for the number of outside decompositions of a given skew shape. Moreover, one can define the basic transformations which we call the twist transformation among cutting strips, and derive a transformation theorem for the determinantal formula of Hamel and Goulden. The special case of the transformation theorem for the Giambelli identity and the rim ribbon identity was obtained by Lascoux and Pragacz. Our transformation theorem also applies to the supersymmetric skew Schur function.

Bottom Schur functions

We give a basis for the space V spanned by the lowest degree part \hat{s}_λof the expansion of the Schur symmetric functions s_λin terms of power sums, where we define the degree of the power sum p_i to be 1. In particular, the dimension of the subspace V_n spanned by those \hat{s}_λfor which λis a partition of n is equal to the number of partitions of n whose parts differ by at least 2. We also show that a symmetric function closely related to \hat{s}_λhas the same coefficients when expanded in terms of power sums or augmented monomial symmetric functions. Proofs are based on the theory of minimal border strip decompositions of Young diagrams.

The Rank and Minimal Border Strip Decompositions of a Skew Partition
Published • View Publication • BIB
Nazarov and Tarasov recently generalized the notion of the rank of a partition to skew partitions. We give several characterizations of the rank of a skew partition and one possible characterization that remains open. One of the characterizations involves the decomposition of a skew shape into a minimal number of border strips, and we develop a theory of these MBSD's as well as of the closely related minimal border strip tableaux. An application is given to the value of a character of the symmetric group S_n indexed by a skew shape z at a permutation whose number of cycles is the rank of z.
