Congruences of shifted Jack Littlewood-Richardson coefficients
The shifted Jack Littlewood-Richardson coefficients $g^λ_{μν}(α)$, first studied by Alexandersson-Féray, are Laurent polynomials in the Jack parameter $α$ attached to triples of partitions, which generalize the classical Jack Littlewood-Richardson coefficients investigated by Stanley, et al. In a previous work of the author's, it was conjectured that the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients for two triples, in which one of the partitions differ by a single box move, are congruent modulo the $α$-hook length of the pivot box for that move. In this note we prove that conjecture. We also investigate the extension of that conjecture to shifted Macdonald functions, which remains open pending two properies of Lassalle's shift map in that case.

Hidden Structure of Jack Littlewood-Richardson Coefficients
We argue that Jack Littlewood-Richardson coefficients $g_{μν}^λ(α)$ are specialisations of certain novel polynomials. For the triple of partitions $(μ,ν,λ)=(21,21,321)$, we prove the corresponding polynomial is invariant under $S_6 \times \mathbb{Z}_2$, which is identified as the automorphism group of the Johnson graph $J(6,3)$. We conjecture that these polynomials exhibit a factorization property on certain hyperplanes, which is a consequence of compatibility relations between polynomials associated to adjacent triples in the Young graph. As a consequence of this, we conjecture that the difference of adjacent Jack Littlewood-Richardson coefficients is divisible by the shared hook length.

A note on irreducible representations of symmetric groups and Sergeev superalgebras
We provide an explicit construction and a closed dimension formula in terms of hook lengths for the irreducible representations for the symmetric groups $\mathfrak{S}_p$ and the Sergeev superalgebras $\mathcal{Y}_p$ over an algebraically closed field $\mathbb{F}$ of characteristic $p>0$.
Hook Length Biases in $t$-Core Partitions
Recently, the theory of hook length biases has emerged as a prominent research topic. Led by Ballantine, Burson, Craig, Folsom, and Wen [\textit{Res. Math. Sci.}, 2023], hook length biases are being explored for ordinary partitions, odd versus distinct partitions, self-conjugate versus distinct odd partitions. Lately, Singh and Barman [\textit{J. Number Theory}, 2024] opened the door to hook length biases in $\ell$-regular partitions. In this work, we extend the theory of hook length biases to $t$-core partitions. For example, let $a_{t,k}(n)$ denote the number of hooks of length $k$ in all $t$-core partitions of $n$, then we find that $a_{3,1}(n)\ge a_{3,2}(n) \ge a_{3,4}(n)$ and $a_{4,1}(n)\ge a_{4,3}(n)$ for all $n$. The methods employed in this work are mainly combinatorial.
A Geometric Characterization of Maximal Unrefinable Partitions via the Keith-Nath Transformation and Young Diagrams
We investigate the combinatorial structure of unrefinable partitions through their correspondence with numerical sets and Young diagrams. Building on the bijection introduced by Keith and Nath, we apply a general geometric criterion that links the unrefinability of a partition directly to the hook lengths of its associated Young diagram. This criterion provides a structural method for the characterization of any unrefinable partition. Using this general framework, we revisit the correspondence results between maximal unrefinable partitions and partitions into distinct parts, previously established using enumerative methods. We provide alternative and purely combinatorial proofs of these bijections, focusing on the rigid symmetry structures of the Young diagrams. In the triangular weight case, we show that the corresponding diagrams are quasi-symmetric, i.e. symmetric up to a single extra column. We extend this analysis to the nontriangular case, showing that the diagrams either exhibit this same quasi-symmetric structure or are perfectly self-conjugate, depending on the maximal part.

Staircase hook-length ratios and special values of Jacobi polynomials
We relate hook-length products for adjacent staircase partitions to special values of Jacobi polynomials. This connection expresses the number of semistandard tableaux in terms of Jacobi polynomials defined via Gauss hypergeometric functions. From this identity, we derive the special values of stable Grothendieck polynomials and $K$-theoretic Schur $P$-functions indexed by adjacent staircase partitions. These values provide ratios of the numbers of set-valued and shifted set-valued semistandard tableaux. This connection is further clarified by the theory of excited Young diagrams, which characterizes the coefficients in these specializations.

Hook-Length Biases in $t$-regular partitions
Recently, there has been a lot of work on combinatorial inequalities related to hook-lengths in $t$-regular partitions. In this short note, we give a proof using generating functions for a result proved by Singh and Barman (2026) using combinatorial methods. In addition, we give an alternate proof of another result of Singh \& Barman (2024) which yields as a corollary a previously unobserved connection of hook-lengths in $t$-regular partitions with certain distinct parts partitions.

Proof of Singh and Barman's conjecture on hook length biases
Let $b_{t,i}(n)$ denote the total number of $i$-hooks in $t$-regular partitions of $n$. Singh and Barman conjectured that $b_{t+1,2}(n) \geq b_{t,2}(n)$ holds for all $t\ge 3$ and $n\ge 0$. This conjecture was known to hold for $t=3$ due to work of Barman Mahanta and Singh. In this paper, we prove this conjecture.

Asymptotics of the Longest Increasing Subsequence in Random Permutations
In this paper, we examine the asymptotic behavior of the longest increasing subsequence (LIS) in a uniformly random permutation of $n$ elements. We rely on the Robinson--Schensted--Knuth correspondence, Young tableaux, and key classical results -- including the Erdős--Szekeres theorem and the Hook Length Formula -- to demonstrate that the expected LIS length grows as $2\sqrt{n}$. We review the essential variational principles of Logan--Shepp and Vershik--Kerov, which determine the limiting shape of the associated random Young diagrams, and summarize the Baik--Deift--Johansson theorem that links fluctuations of the LIS length to the Tracy--Widom distribution. Our approach focuses on providing conceptual and intuitive explanations of these results, unifying classical proofs into a single narrative and supplying fresh visual examples, while referring the reader to the original literature for detailed proofs and rigorous arguments.

A generalization of RSK to $d$-complete posets
The hook length formula for $d$-complete posets expresses the number of linear extensions of a $d$-complete poset $P$ in terms of hooks of $P$. It generalizes the usual hook length formula for standard Young tableaux, as well as hook length formulas for shifted Young tableaux and trees. We give a new proof of the hook length formula for $d$-complete posets which is elementary and purely combinatorial. Our approach is to define a generalization of the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth bijection for $d$-complete posets, which may be of independent interest.

Bounds on skew dimensions and characters of symmetric groups via thick hook decompositions
We bound the number of standard tableaux of skew shapes via thick hook decompositions in the Naruse hook length formula. Combining this with elementary counting arguments in the Murnaghan--Nakayama rule, we establish a uniform bound on characters of symmetric groups $\mathfrak{S}_n$. In the case of balanced representations, this improves on the character bounds of Féray and Śniady for permutations with support size at least $n^{2/3}$, and is sharp for permutations with support size of order $n$.

An introduction to the symmetric group algebra
This is an introduction to the group algebras of the symmetric groups, written for a quarter-long graduate course. After recalling the definition of group algebras (and monoid algebras) in general, as well as basic properties of permutations, we introduce several families of elements in the symmetric group algebras $\mathbf{k}[S_n]$ such as the Young--Jucys--Murphy elements, the (sign-)integrals and the conjugacy class sums. Then comes a chapter on group actions and representations in general, followed by the core of this text: a study of the representations of symmetric groups (i.e., of left $\mathbf{k}[S_n]$-modules), including the classical theory of Young tableaux and Young symmetrizers. We prove in detail the main facts including the characterization of irreducible representations (in characteristic $0$), the Garnir relations, the standard basis theorem, the description of duals of Specht modules, and the hook length formula, as well as a number of less known results. Finally, we describe several bases of $\mathbf{k}[S_n]$ that arise from the study of Specht modules, including the Murphy cellular bases. The methods used are elementary and computational. We aim to assume as little as possible of the base ring $\mathbf{k}$, and to use as little as possible from representation theory (nothing more advanced than Maschke and Jordan--Hölder). Over 100 exercises (without solutions) are scattered through the text.
On the smallest partition associated to a numerical semigroup
The set of hook lengths of an integer partition $λ$ is the complement of some numerical semigroup $S$. There has been recent interest in studying the number of partitions with a given set of hook lengths. Very little is known about the distribution of sizes of this finite set of partitions. We focus on the problem of determining the size of the smallest partition with its set of hook lengths equal to $\mathbb{N}\setminus S$.

Dimensions of compositions modulo a prime
The (ordinary) representation theory of the symmetric group is fascinating and has rich connections to combinatorics, including the Frobenius correspondence to the self-dual graded Hopf algebra of symmetric functions. The $0$-Hecke algebra (of type $A$) is a deformation of the group algebra of the symmetric group, and its representation theory has an analogous correspondence to the dual graded Hopf algebras of quasisymmetric functions and noncommutative symmetric functions. Macdonald used the hook length formula for the number of standard Young tableaux of a fixed shape to determine how many irreducible representations of the symmetric group have dimensions indivisible by a prime $p$. In this paper, we study the dimensions of the projective indecomposable modules of the $0$-Hecke algebra modulo $p$; such a module is indexed by a composition and its dimension is given by a ribbon number, i.e., the cardinality of a descent class. Applying a result of Dickson on the congruence of multinomial coefficients, we count how many ribbon numbers belong to each congruence class modulo $p$. We also extend the result to other finite Coxeter groups.

Finite analogs of partition bias related to hook length two and a variant of Sylvester's map
In this paper, we count the total number of hooks of length two in all odd partitions of $n$ and all distinct partitions of $n$ with a bound on the largest part of the partitions. We generalize inequalities of Ballantine, Burson, Craig, Folsom and Wen by showing there is a bias in the number of hooks of length two in all odd partitions over all distinct partitions of $n$ in presence of a bound on the largest part. To establish such a bias, we use a variant of Sylvester's map. Then, we conjecture a similar finite bias for a weighted count of hooks of length two and prove it when we remove the bound on the largest part.

Sharp character bounds and cutoff for symmetric groups
We develop a flexible technique to bound the characters of symmetric groups, via the Naruse hook length formula, the Larsen--Shalev character bounds, and appropriate diagram slicings. It allows us to prove a uniform exponential character bound with optimal constant $1/2$. We furthermore prove sharp character bounds for conjugacy classes having a macroscopic number of fixed points, and deduce that the random walks on the associated Cayley graphs exhibit a total variation and $L^2$ cutoff.

Maximal entropy random walks and central Markov chains
We introduce and develop the concept of Maximal Entropy Random Walks (MERWs) on Weighted Bratteli Diagrams (WBDs), maximizing entropy production along paths as a natural criterion for choosing random walks on networks. Initially defined for irreducible finite graphs, MERWs were recently extended to the infinite setting in [1]. Bratteli Diagrams model various growth processes, such as the Young Lattice, where the Plancherel growth process emerges as a MERW. We show that MERWs are special cases of central Markov chains, which, in general, provide a powerful framework for deriving combinatorial identities. Regarding growing trees, in particular, we retrieve and extend Han's hook-length formula for binary trees and demonstrate that the Binary Search Tree (BST) process is a MERW, recovering its asymptotic behavior. We also introduce preferential attachment to generalize BSTs. For comb models, significant central measures appear, including the Chinese restaurant process, providing an alternative proof of the Poisson-Dirichlet limit distribution. Finally, we propose a Monte Carlo method, based on Knuth's algorithm, to approximate MERWs. We apply it to a pyramidal growth model, drawing connections with the limit shape of Young diagrams under the Plancherel measure.

Congruences for hook lengths of partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently, Amdeberhan et al. proved congruences for the number of hooks of fixed even length among the set of self-conjugate partitions of an integer $n$, therefore answering positively a conjecture raised by Ballantine et al.. In this paper, we show how these congruences can be immediately derived and generalized from an addition theorem for self-conjugate partitions proved by the second author. We also recall how the addition theorem proved before by Han and Ji can be used to derive similar congruences for the whole set of partitions, which are originally due to Bessenrodt, and Bacher and Manivel. Finally, we extend such congruences to the set of $z$-asymmetric partitions defined by Ayyer and Kumari, by proving an addition-multiplication theorem for these partitions. Among other things, this contains as special cases the congruences for the number of hook lengths for the self-conjugate and the so-called doubled distinct partitions.

On the hook length biases of the $2$- and $3$-regular partitions
Let $b_{t,i}(n)$ denote the total number of the $i$ hooks in the $t$-regular partitions of $n$. Singh and Barman (J. Number Theory { 264} (2024), 41--58) raised two conjectures on $b_{t,i}(n)$. The first conjecture is on the positivity of $b_{3,2}(n)-b_{3,1}(n)$ for $n\ge 28$. The second conjecture states that when $k\ge 3$, $b_{2,k}(n)\ge b_{2,k+1}(n)$ for all $n$ except for $n= k+1$. In this paper, we confirm the first conjecture. {Moreover, we show that for any odd $k\ge 3$, the second conjecture fails for infinitely many $n$.} {Furthermore, we verify that the second conjecture holds for $k=4$ and $6$.} We also propose a conjecture on the even case $k$, which is a modification of Singh and Barman's second conjecture.

Inequalities and asymptotics for hook lengths in $\ell$-regular partitions and $\ell$-distinct partitions
In this article, we study hook lengths in $\ell$-regular partitions and $\ell$-distinct partitions. More precisely, we establish hook length inequalities between $\ell$-regular partitions and $\ell$-distinct partitions for hook lengths $2$ and $3$, by deriving asymptotic formulas for the total number of hooks of length $t$ in both partition classes, for $t = 1, 2, 3$. From these asymptotics, we show that the ratio of the total number of hooks of length $t$ in $\ell$-regular partitions to those in $\ell$-distinct partitions tends to a constant that depends on $\ell$ and $t$. We also provide hook length inequalities within $\ell$-regular partitions and within $\ell$-distinct partitions.
