Moments for generalizations of a coin flip game
We derive a recursive formula for the moments of the number of flips using a possibly biased coin to produce a prescribed finite binary string $S$ when $S$ is either a run of heads or a run of heads followed by a tails. Our recursive formula involve certain sums, which we simplify by using a one-parameter extension of the well-studied Eulerian number, which belongs to the two-parameter family of numbers introduced by Graham, Knuth, and Patashnik. We also use the Goulden--Jackson cluster method and Faà di Bruno's formula to establish a closed formula for the moments in a more general situation where a die having an arbitrary number of faces with possibly different probabilities is rolled repeatedly until a prescribed finite word occurs.
Dimensions of compositions modulo a prime
The (ordinary) representation theory of the symmetric group is fascinating and has rich connections to combinatorics, including the Frobenius correspondence to the self-dual graded Hopf algebra of symmetric functions. The $0$-Hecke algebra (of type $A$) is a deformation of the group algebra of the symmetric group, and its representation theory has an analogous correspondence to the dual graded Hopf algebras of quasisymmetric functions and noncommutative symmetric functions. Macdonald used the hook length formula for the number of standard Young tableaux of a fixed shape to determine how many irreducible representations of the symmetric group have dimensions indivisible by a prime $p$. In this paper, we study the dimensions of the projective indecomposable modules of the $0$-Hecke algebra modulo $p$; such a module is indexed by a composition and its dimension is given by a ribbon number, i.e., the cardinality of a descent class. Applying a result of Dickson on the congruence of multinomial coefficients, we count how many ribbon numbers belong to each congruence class modulo $p$. We also extend the result to other finite Coxeter groups.
A coin flip game and generalizations of Fibonacci numbers
We study a game in which one keeps flipping a coin until a given finite string of heads and tails occurs. We find the expected number of coin flips to end the game when the ending string consists of at most four maximal runs of heads or tails or alternates between heads and tails. This leads to some summation identities involving certain generalizations of the Fibonacci numbers.
Even and odd compositions with restricted parts
A result of Legendre asserts that the difference between the numbers of (length) even and odd partitions of $n$ into distinct parts is $0$, $1$, or $-1$; this also follows from Euler's pentagonal number theorem. We establish an analogous result for compositions and obtain some generalizations that are related to various entries in the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences.

The associative spectrum of a groupoid (i.e., a set with a binary operation) measures its nonassociativity while the associative-commutative spectrum measures both nonassociativity and noncommutativity of the groupoid. The two spectra are also the coefficients of the Hilbert series of certain operads. We establish upper bounds for the two spectra of various varieties of groupoids defined by different sets of identities and provide examples (often groupoids with three elements) for which the upper bounds are achieved. Our results have connections to many interesting combinatorial objects and integer sequences and naturally lead to some questions for future studies.
Partially Palindromic Compositions
We generalize recent work of Andrews, Just, and Simay on modular palindromic compositions and anti-palindromic compositions by viewing all compositions partially (modular) palindromic or anti-palindromic. More precisely, we enumerate compositions by the extent to which they are (modular) palindromic or anti-palindromic. We obtain various closed formulas from generating functions and provide bijective proofs for many of them. We recover some known results of Andrews, Just, and Simay and discover new connections with numerous sequences in The On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (OEIS).

An integer distance digraph is the Cayley graph $Γ(\mathbb{Z},S)$ of the additive group $\mathbb{Z}$ of all integers with respect to a finite subset $S\subseteq\mathbb{Z}$. The domination ratio of $Γ(\mathbb{Z},S)$, defined as the minimum density of its dominating sets, is related to some number theory problems, such as tiling the integers and finding the maximum density of a set of integers with missing differences. We precisely determine the domination ratio of the integer distance graph $Γ(\mathbb{Z},\{1,2,\ldots,d-2,s\})$ for any integers $d$ and $s$ satisfying $d\ge2$ and $s\notin[0,d-2]$. Our result generalizes a previous result on the domination ratio of the graph $Γ(\mathbb{Z},\{1,s\})$ with $s\in\mathbb{Z}\setminus\{0,1\}$ and also implies the domination number of certain circulant graphs $Γ(\mathbb{Z}_n,S)$, where $\mathbb{Z}_n$ is the finite cyclic group of integers modulo $n$ and $S$ is a subset of $\mathbb{Z}_n$.

We initiate the study of a quantitative measure for the failure of a binary operation to be commutative and associative. We call this measure the associative-commutative spectrum as it extends the so-called associative spectrum (also known as the subassociativity type), which measures the nonassociativity of a binary operation. In fact, the associative-commutative spectrum (resp. associative spectrum) is the cardinality of the symmetric (resp. nonsymmetric) operad obtained naturally from a groupoid (a set with a binary operation). In this paper we provide some general results on the associative-commutative spectrum, precisely determine this measure for certain binary operations, and propose some problems for future study.

The Norton product is defined on each eigenspace of a distance regular graph by the orthogonal projection of the entry-wise product. The resulting algebra, known as the Norton algebra, is a commutative nonassociative algebra that is useful in group theory due to its interesting automorphism group. We provide a formula for the Norton product on each eigenspace of a Hamming graph using linear characters. We construct a large subgroup of automorphisms of the Norton algebra of a Hamming graph and completely describe the automorphism group in some cases. We also show that the Norton product on each eigenspace of a Hamming graph is as nonassociative as possible, except for some special cases in which it is either associative or equally as nonassociative as the so-called double minus operation previously studied by the author, Mickey, and Xu. Our results restrict to the hypercubes and extend to the halved and/or folded cubes, the bilinear forms graphs, and more generally, all Cayley graphs of finite abelian groups.
New upper bounds for the bondage number of a graph in terms of its maximum degree and Euler characteristic

The bondage number $b(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the smallest number of edges whose removal from $G$ results in a graph with larger domination number. Let $G$ be embeddable on a surface whose Euler characteristic $χ$ is as large as possible, and assume $χ\leq0$. Gagarin-Zverovich and Huang have recently found upper bounds of $b(G)$ in terms of the maximum degree $Δ(G)$ and the Euler characteristic $χ(G)=χ$. In this paper we prove a better upper bound $b(G)\leqΔ(G)+\lfloor t\rfloor$ where $t$ is the largest real root of the cubic equation $z^3 + z^2 + (3χ- 8)z + 9χ- 12=0$; this upper bound is asymptotically equivalent to $b(G)\leqΔ(G)+1+\lfloor \sqrt{4-3χ} \rfloor$. We also establish further improved upper bounds for $b(G)$ when the girth, order, or size of the graph $G$ is large compared with its Euler characteristic $χ$.

A Norton algebra is an eigenspace of a distance regular graph endowed with a commutative nonassociative product called the Norton product, which is defined as the projection of the entrywise product onto this eigenspace. The Norton algebras are useful in finite group theory as they have interesting automorphism groups. We provide a precise quantitative measurement for the nonassociativity of the Norton product on the eigenspace of the second largest eigenvalue of the Johnson graphs, Grassman graphs, Hamming graphs, and dual polar graphs, based on the formulas for this product established in previous work of Levstein, Maldonado and Penazzi. Our result shows that this product is as nonassociative as possible except for two cases, one being the trivial vanishing case while the other having connections with the integer sequence A000975 on OEIS and the so-called double minus operation studied recently by Huang, Mickey, and Xu.
Domination ratio of integer distance digraphs
An integer distance digraph is the Cayley graph $Γ(\mathbb{Z},S)$ of the additive group $\mathbb{Z}$ of all integers with respect to some finite subset $S \subseteq \mathbb{Z}$. The domination ratio of $Γ(\mathbb{Z},S)$ is the minimum density of a dominating set in $Γ(\mathbb{Z},S)$. We establish some basic results on the domination ratio of $Γ(\mathbb{Z},S)$ and precisely determine it when $S=\{s,t\}$ with $s$ dividing $t$.
Hecke algebras of simply-laced type with independent parameters
We study the (complex) Hecke algebra $\mathcal{H}_S(\mathbf{q})$ of a finite simply-laced Coxeter system $(W,S)$ with independent parameters $\mathbf{q} \in \left( \mathbb{C} \setminus\{\text{roots of unity}\} \right)^S$. We construct its irreducible representations and projective indecomposable representations. We obtain the quiver of this algebra and determine when it is of finite representation type. We provide decomposition formulas for induced and restricted representations between the algebra $\mathcal{H}_S(\mathbf{q})$ and the algebra $\mathcal{H}_R(\mathbf{q}|_R)$ with $R\subseteq S$. Our results demonstrate an interesting combination of the representation theory of finite Coxeter groups and their 0-Hecke algebras, including a two-sided duality between the induced and restricted representations.
Compositions with restricted parts
Euler showed that the number of partitions of $n$ into distinct parts equals the number of partitions of $n$ into odd parts. This theorem was generalized by Glaisher and further by Franklin. Recently, Beck made three conjectures on partitions with restricted parts, which were confirmed analytically by Andrews and Chern and combinatorially by Yang.
Analogous to Euler's partition theorem, it is known that the number of compositions of $n$ with odd parts equals the number of compositions of $n+1$ with parts greater than one, as both numbers equal the Fibonacci number $F_n$. Recently, Sills provided a bijective proof for this result using binary sequences, and Munagi proved a generalization similar to Glaisher's result using the zigzag graphs of compositions. Extending Sills' bijection, we obtain a further generalizaiton which is analogous to Franklin's result. We establish, both analytically and combinatorially, two closed formulas for the number of compositions with restricted parts appearing in our generalization. We also prove some composition analogues for the conjectures of Beck.

We investigate certain nonassociative binary operations that satisfy a four-parameter generalization of the associative law. From this we obtain variations of the ubiquitous Catalan numbers and connections to many interesting combinatorial objects such as binary trees, plane trees, lattice paths, and permutations.
The Nonassociativity of the Double Minus Operation
The sequence A000975 in OEIS can be defined by $A_1=1$, $A_{n+1}=2A_n$ if $n$ is odd, and $A_{n+1}=2A_n+1$ if $n$ is even. This sequence satisfies other recurrence relations, admits some closed formulas, and is known to enumerate several interesting families of objects. We provide a new interpretation of this sequence using a binary operation defined by $a\ominus b := -a -b$. We show that the number of distinct results obtained by inserting parentheses in the expression $x_0\ominus x_1\ominus \cdots\ominus x_n$ equals $A_n$, by investigating the leaf depth in binary trees. Our result can be viewed as a quantitative measurement for the nonassociativity of the binary operation $\ominus$.

We construct an action of the Hecke algebra $H_n(q)$ on a quotient of the polynomial ring $F[x_1, \dots, x_n]$, where $F = \mathbb{Q}(q)$. The dimension of our quotient ring is the number of $k$-block ordered set partitions of $\{1, 2, \dots, n \}$. This gives a quantum analog of a construction of Haglund-Rhoades-Shimozono and interpolates between their result at $q = 1$ and work of Huang-Rhoades at $q = 0$.

This paper considers an invariant of modules over a finite-dimensional Hopf algebra, called the critical group. This generalizes the critical groups of complex finite group representations studied by Benkart, Klivans, Reiner and Gaetz. A formula is given for the cardinality of the critical group generally, and the critical group for the regular representation is described completely. A key role in the formulas is played by the greatest common divisor of the dimensions of the indecomposable projective representations.

Let the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ act on the polynomial ring $\mathbb{Q}[\mathbf{x}_n] = \mathbb{Q}[x_1, \dots, x_n]$ by variable permutation. The coinvariant algebra is the graded $\mathfrak{S}_n$-module $R_n := {\mathbb{Q}[\mathbf{x}_n]} / {I_n}$, where $I_n$ is the ideal in $\mathbb{Q}[\mathbf{x}_n]$ generated by invariant polynomials with vanishing constant term. Haglund, Rhoades, and Shimozono introduced a new quotient $R_{n,k}$ of the polynomial ring $\mathbb{Q}[\mathbf{x}_n]$ depending on two positive integers $k \leq n$ which reduces to the classical coinvariant algebra of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ when $k = n$. The quotient $R_{n,k}$ carries the structure of a graded $\mathfrak{S}_n$-module; Haglund et. al. determine its graded isomorphism type and relate it to the Delta Conjecture in the theory of Macdonald polynomials. We introduce and study a related quotient $S_{n,k}$ of $\mathbb{F}[\mathbf{x}_n]$ which carries a graded action of the 0-Hecke algebra $H_n(0)$, where $\mathbb{F}$ is an arbitrary field. We prove 0-Hecke analogs of the results of Haglund, Rhoades, and Shimozono. In the classical case $k = n$, we recover earlier results of Huang concerning the 0-Hecke action on the coinvariant algebra.
Modular Catalan Numbers

The Catalan number $C_n$ enumerates parenthesizations of $x_0*\dotsb*x_n$ where $*$ is a binary operation. We introduce the modular Catalan number $C_{k,n}$ to count equivalence classes of parenthesizations of $x_0*\dotsb*x_n$ when $*$ satisfies a $k$-associative law generalizing the usual associativity. This leads to a study of restricted families of Catalan objects enumerated by $C_{k,n}$ with emphasis on binary trees, plane trees, and Dyck paths, each avoiding certain patterns. We give closed formulas for $C_{k,n}$ with two different proofs. For each $n\ge0$ we compute the largest size of $k$-associative equivalence classes and show that the number of classes with this size is a Catalan number.
