A new characterization of right keys, and the $m$-symmetric Schur functions at $t=0$
The ring $R_m$ of $m$-symmetric functions consists of the formal power series that are symmetric in the variables $x_{m+1},x_{m+2},\dots$ but carry no symmetry in the first $m$ variables. We develop a combinatorial theory for the specialization at $t=0$ of the Schur functions of $R_m$. Our main tool is a new characterization of right key tableaux as suprema of the sets of decreasing subwords of the reading words of the subtableaux of $T$. Being invariant under elementary Knuth transformations, this characterization is compatible with the RSK correspondence. We obtain in this way a generating function over semistandard tableaux for the $m$-symmetric Schur functions at $t=0$, together with a combinatorial proof of a Cauchy identity in $R_m$. The $m$-symmetric Schur functions and their dual are then respectively identified with Demazure atoms and Demazure characters. Restricted to the last $m$ variables, our correspondence specializes to a proof, by ordinary RSK, of Lascoux's nonsymmetric Cauchy identity for Demazure characters and atoms. As further applications, we relate the $m$-symmetric Schur functions at $t=0$ to the almost symmetric Schur functions through a unitriangular change-of-basis matrix, obtain tableau generating functions and Cauchy identities for both families, and derive Jacobi-Trudi type determinantal formulas for three different bases.
An RSK correspondence for cylindric tableaux
This paper establishes an analogue of the Robinson--Schensted correspondence for cylindric tableaux. In particular, for any pair of positive integers $(d,L)$, we construct a bijection between permutations that avoid the patterns $d\cdots 1 (d+1)$ and $1\cdots (L+1)$ and pairs of $(d,L)$-cylindric standard Young tableaux with a common shape. This arises as a special case of a Knuth-type generalization involving cylindric semistandard tableaux and a further generalization involving oscillating tableaux. Using these results, we construct several other bijections and derive enumerative consequences involving cylindric tableaux and pattern-avoiding permutations. For example, we give asymptotics for the number of permutations in $S_n$ that avoid the patterns $d\cdots 1 (d+1)$ and $1\cdots (L+1)$ as $n\to\infty$.
Staircase hook-length ratios and special values of Jacobi polynomials
We relate hook-length products for adjacent staircase partitions to special values of Jacobi polynomials. This connection expresses the number of semistandard tableaux in terms of Jacobi polynomials defined via Gauss hypergeometric functions. From this identity, we derive the special values of stable Grothendieck polynomials and $K$-theoretic Schur $P$-functions indexed by adjacent staircase partitions. These values provide ratios of the numbers of set-valued and shifted set-valued semistandard tableaux. This connection is further clarified by the theory of excited Young diagrams, which characterizes the coefficients in these specializations.
Positive expansions of permuted basement and quasisymmetric Macdonald polynomials at $t=0$
It is well known that the $q$-Whittaker polynomials, which are $t=0$ specializations of the Macdonald polynomials $P_λ(X;q,t)$, expand positively as the sum of Schur polynomials. Macdonald polynomials have a quasisymmetric refinement: the quasisymmetric Macdonald polynomials $G_γ(X;q,t)$, and a nonsymmetric refinement: the ASEP polynomials $f_α(X;q,t)$. We study the $t=0$ specializations of both these families of polynomials and show analogous properties: the quasisymmetric Macdonald polynomials expand positively as a sum of quasisymmetric Schur functions, $\text{QS}_γ(X)$, and the ASEP polynomials expand positively as a sum of Demazure atoms, $\mathcal{A}_α(X)$. As a corollary of the latter, we prove more generally that any permuted basement Macdonald polynomial has a positive expansion in the Demazure atoms at $t=0$. We give a description of the structure coefficients of $G_γ(X;q,0)$ and $f_α(X;q,0)$ in both cases in terms of the charge statistic on a restricted set of semistandard tableaux.
A non-iterative straightening algorithm and orthogonality for skew Schur modules
We generalize Fulton's determinantal construction of Schur modules to the skew setting, providing an explicit and functorial presentation using only elementary linear algebra and determinantal identities, in parallel with the partition case. Building on the non-iterative straightening formula of the first author for partition shapes, we develop a non-iterative straightening algorithm for skew Schur modules that expresses arbitrary elements in a new D-basis with an explicit closed coefficient formula. We then show that this D-basis is the result of applying Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization to the semistandard tableau basis, which identifies a natural inner product on the skew Schur module and recasts straightening as an orthogonal projection.
A local framework for proving combinatorial matrix inversion theorems
Combinatorial transition matrices arise frequently in the theory of symmetric functions and their generalizations. The entries of such matrices often count signed, weighted combinatorial structures such as semistandard tableaux, rim-hook tableaux, or brick tabloids. Bijective proofs that two such matrices are inverses of each other may be difficult to find. This paper presents a general framework for proving such inversion results in the case where the combinatorial objects are built up recursively by successively adding some incremental structure such as a single horizontal strip or rim-hook. In this setting, we show that a sequence of matrix inversion results $A_nB_n=I$ can be reduced to a certain ``local'' identity involving the incremental structures. Here, $A_n$ and $B_n$ are matrices that might be non-square, and the columns of $A_n$ and the rows of $B_n$ indexed by compositions of $n$. We illustrate the general theory with four classical applications involving the Kostka matrices, the character tables of the symmetric group, incidence matrices for composition posets, and matrices counting brick tabloids. We obtain a new, canonical bijective proof of an inversion result for rectangular Kostka matrices, which complements the proof for the square case due to Eğecioğlu and Remmel. We also give a new bijective proof of the orthogonality result for the irreducible $S_n$-characters that is shorter than the original version due to White.
Two stability theorems on plethysms of Schur functions
The plethysm product of Schur functions corresponds to composing polynomial representations of infinite general linear groups. Finding the plethysm coefficients $\langle s_ν\circ s_μ, s_λ\rangle$ that express an arbitrary plethysm $s_ν\circ s_μ$ as a sum $\sum_λ\langle s_ν\circ s_μ, s_λ\rangle s_λ$ of Schur functions is a fundamental open problem in algebraic combinatorics. We prove two stability theorems for plethysm coefficients under the operations of adding and/or joining an arbitrary partition to either $μ$ or $ν$. In both theorems $μ$ may be replaced with an arbitrary skew partition. As special cases we obtain all stability results on the plethysm product of two Schur functions in the literature to date. The proofs are entirely combinatorial using plethystic semistandard tableaux with positive and negative entries.
Color rules for cyclic wreath products and semigroup algebras from projective toric varieties
We introduce the notion of "color rules" for computing class functions of $Z_k \wr S_n$, where $Z_k$ is the cyclic group of order $k$ and $S_n$ is the symmetric group on $n$ letters. Using a general sign-reversing involution and a map of order $k$, we give a combinatorial proof that the irreducible decomposition of these class functions is given by a weighted sum over semistandard tableaux in the colors. Since using two colors at once is also a color rule, we are consequently able to decompose arbitrary tensor products of representations whose characters can be computed via color rules. This method extends to class functions of $G \wr S_n$ where $G$ is a finite abelian group. We give a number of applications, including decomposing tensor powers of the defining representation, along with a combinatorial proof of the Murnaghan-Nakayama rule for $Z_k \wr S_n$.
Our main application is to the study of the linear action of $Z_k \wr S_n$ on bigraded affine semigroup algebras arising from the product of projective toric varieties. In the case of the product of projective spaces, our methods give the decomposition of these bigraded characters into irreducible characters, thus deriving equivariant generalizations of Euler-Mahonian identities.
Hook-length Formulas for Skew Shapes via Contour Integrals and Vertex Models
The number of standard Young tableaux of a skew shape $λ/μ$ can be computed as a sum over excited diagrams inside $λ$. Excited diagrams are in bijection with certain lozenge tilings, with flagged semistandard tableaux and also nonintersecting lattice paths inside $λ$. We give two new proofs of a multivariate generalization of this formula, which allow us to extend the setup beyond standard Young tableaux and the underlying Schur symmetric polynomials. The first proof uses multiple contour integrals. The second one interprets excited diagrams as configurations of a six-vertex model at a free fermion point, and derives the formula for the number of standard Young tableaux of a skew shape from the Yang-Baxter equation.

Asvin G and Andrew O'Desky recently introduced the graded algebra P$Λ$ of polysymmetric functions as a generalization of the algebra $Λ$ of symmetric functions. This article develops combinatorial formulas for some multiplication rules and transition matrix entries for P$Λ$ that are analogous to well-known classical formulas for $Λ$. In more detail, we consider pure tensor bases $\{s^{\otimes}_τ\}$, $\{p^{\otimes}_τ\}$, and $\{m^{\otimes}_τ\}$ for P$Λ$ that arise as tensor products of the classical Schur basis, power-sum basis, and monomial basis for $Λ$. We find expansions in these bases of the non-pure bases $\{P_δ\}$, $\{H_δ\}$, $\{E^+_δ\}$, and $\{E_δ\}$ studied by Asvin G and O'Desky. The answers involve tableau-like structures generalizing semistandard tableaux, rim-hook tableaux, and the brick tabloids of Eğecioğlu and Remmel. These objects arise by iteration of new Pieri-type rules that give expansions of products such as $s^{\otimes}_σH_δ$, $p^{\otimes}_σE_δ$, etc.
A combinatorial interpretation of the Bernstein degree of unitary highest weight modules
Consider the $(\mathfrak{g}, K)$-modules $L_λ$ for unitary highest weight representations of the real reductive group $G_{\mathbb{R}} = \operatorname{U}(p,q)$, $\operatorname{Mp}(2n, \mathbb{R})$, or $\operatorname{O}^*(2n)$, where $\operatorname{Mp}(2n,\mathbb{R})$ denotes the metaplectic double cover of $\operatorname{Sp}(2n,\mathbb{R})$. Let $k$ be a positive integer. Corresponding to $G_{\mathbb{R}}$ via Howe duality is the compact group $\operatorname{U}(k)$, $\operatorname{O}(k)$, or $\operatorname{Sp}(k)$, respectively, for which every irreducible representation $σ$ corresponds to a unique $L_λ = L_{λ(σ)}$. Nishiyama-Ochiai-Taniguchi (2001) expressed the Bernstein degree $\operatorname{Deg} L_{λ(σ)}$ as the product of $\dim σ$ and the degree of the associated variety of $L_{λ(σ)}$; this result is valid when $k \leq r :=$ the real rank of $G_{\mathbb{R}}$. In this paper, for arbitrary $k$, we give a new combinatorial interpretation $\operatorname{Deg} L_{λ(σ)} = \#(\mathcal{Q}_k(σ) \times \mathcal{P}_k)$, where $\mathcal{Q}_k(σ)$ is a certain set of semistandard tableaux, whose cardinality (for $k \geq r$) interpolates between $\dim σ$ and the dimension of the simple $K$-module with highest weight $λ(σ)$. The set $\mathcal{P}_k$ consists of certain plane partitions that encode the Hilbert series of the associated variety. We exhibit analogous sets $\mathcal{P}_k$ of plane partitions for all real reductive groups of Hermitian type, including the exceptional groups.

Rado's theorem about permutahedra and dominance order on partitions reveals that each Schur polynomial is M-convex, or equivalently, it has a saturated Newton polytope and this polytope is a generalized permutahedron as well. In this paper we show that the support of each dual $k$-Schur polynomial indexed by a $k$-bounded partition coincides with that of the Schur polynomial indexed by the same partition, and hence the two polynomials share the same saturated Newton polytope. The main result is based on our recursive algorithm to generate a semistandard $k$-tableau for a given shape and $k$-weight. As consequences, we obtain the M-convexity of dual $k$-Schur polynomials, affine Stanley symmetric polynomials and cylindric skew Schur polynomials.
Minimal skew semistandard tableaux and the Hillman--Grassl correspondence
Standard tableaux of skew shape are fundamental objects in enumerative and algebraic combinatorics and no product formula for the number is known. In 2014, Naruse gave a formula (NHLF) as a positive sum over excited diagrams of products of hook-lengths. Subsequently, Morales, Pak, and Panova gave a $q$-analogue of this formula in terms of skew semistandard tableaux (SSYT). They also showed, partly algebraically, that the Hillman--Grassl map, restricted to skew semistandard tableaux, is behind their $q$-analogue. We study the problem of circumventing the algebraic part and proving the bijection completely combinatorially, which we do for border strips. For a skew shape, we define minimal semistandard Young tableaux, that are in correspondence with excited diagrams via a new description of the Hillman--Grassl bijection and have an analogue of excited moves. Lastly, we relate the minimal skew SSYT with the terms of the Okounkov-Olshanski formula (OOF) for counting standard tableaux of skew shape. Our construction immediately implies that the summands in the NHLF are less than the summands in the OOF and we characterize the shapes where both formulas have the same number of summands.
Diagonal operators, $q$-Whittaker functions and rook theory
We discuss the problem posed by Bender, Coley, Robbins and Rumsey of enumerating the number of subspaces which have a given profile with respect to a linear operator over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. We solve this problem in the case where the operator is diagonalizable. The solution leads us to a new class of polynomials $b_{μν}(q)$ indexed by pairs of integer partitions. These polynomials have several interesting specializations and can be expressed as positive sums over semistandard tableaux. We present a new correspondence between set partitions and semistandard tableaux. A close analysis of this correspondence reveals the existence of several new set partition statistics which generate the polynomials $b_{μν}(q)$; each such statistic arises from a Mahonian statistic on multiset permutations. The polynomials $b_{μν}(q)$ are also given a description in terms of coefficients in the monomial expansion of $q$-Whittaker symmetric functions which are specializations of Macdonald polynomials. We express the Touchard--Riordan generating polynomial for chord diagrams by number of crossings in terms of $q$-Whittaker functions. We also introduce a class of $q$-Stirling numbers defined in terms of the polynomials $b_{μν}(q)$ and present connections with $q$-rook theory in the spirit of Garsia and Remmel.
Symplectic tableaux and quantum symmetric pairs
We provide a new branching rule from the general linear group $GL_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$ to the symplectic group $Sp_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$ by establishing a simple algorithm which gives rise to a bijection from the set of semistandard tableaux of a fixed shape to a disjoint union of several copies of sets of symplectic tableaux of various shapes. The algorithm arises from representation theory of a quantum symmetric pair of type $A\mathrm{II}_{2n-1}$, which is a $q$-analogue of the classical symmetric pair $(\mathfrak{gl}_{2n}(\mathbb{C}), \mathfrak{sp}_{2n}(\mathbb{C}))$.
A recursive method for the oddness of the number of set-valued tableaux
Set-valued tableaux, introduced by Buch to express the tableaux-sum formula for stable Grothendieck polynomials, generalize semistandard tableaux. We provide a new recursive proof that the number of set-valued tableaux of a given shape is odd.
Cyclic Sieving for a Family of Semistandard Tableaux
We give a new cyclic sieving phenomenon for semistandard Young tableaux $SSYT(λ,μ)$ of shape $λ=(m,n^b)$ and content $μ$, a $(b+2)$-tuple. We prove that $(SSYT(λ,μ),\langle \partial^{b+2} \rangle, f(q))$ exhibits the cyclic sieving phenomenon, where $\partial$ is the jeu de taquin promotion operator and $f(q)$ is a modified Kostka-Foulkes polynomial $\widetilde{K}_{λ,μ}(q)$, up to a power of $q$.

The $q$-Whittaker function $W_λ(\mathbf{x};q)$ associated to a partition $λ$ is a $q$-analogue of the Schur function $s_λ(\mathbf{x})$, and is defined as the $t=0$ specialization of the Macdonald polynomial $P_λ(\mathbf{x};q,t)$. We show combinatorially how to expand $W_λ(\mathbf{x};q)$ in terms of partial flags compatible with a nilpotent endomorphism over the finite field of size $1/q$. This yields an expression analogous to a well-known formula for the Hall-Littlewood functions. We show that considering pairs of partial flags and taking Jordan forms leads to a probabilistic bijection between nonnegative-integer matrices and pairs of semistandard tableaux of the same shape, proving the Cauchy identity for $q$-Whittaker functions. We call our probabilistic bijection the $q$-Burge correspondence, and prove that in the limit as $q\to 0$, we recover a description of the classical Burge correspondence (also known as column RSK) due to Rosso (2012). A key step in the proof is the enumeration of an arbitrary double coset of $\text{GL}_n$ modulo two parabolic subgroups, which we find to be of independent interest. As an application, we use the $q$-Burge correspondence to count isomorphism classes of certain modules over the preprojective algebra of a type $A$ quiver (i.e. a path), refined according to their socle filtrations. This develops a connection between the combinatorics of symmetric functions and the representation theory of preprojective algebras.

Pipe dreams and bumpless pipe dreams for vexillary permutations are each known to be in bijection with certain semistandard tableaux via maps due to Lenart and Weigandt, respectively. Recently, Gao and Huang have defined a bijection between the former two sets. In this note we show for vexillary permutations that the Gao-Huang bijection preserves the associated tableaux, giving a new proof of Lenart's result. Our methods extend to give a recording tableau for any bumpless pipe dream.
A super Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence with symmetry and the super Littlewood-Richardson rule
Robinson-Schensted-Knuth (RSK) correspondence is a bijective correspondence between two-rowed arrays of non-negative integers and pairs of same-shape semistandard tableaux. This correspondence satisfies the symmetry property, that is, exchanging the rows of a two-rowed array is equivalent to exchanging the positions of the corresponding pair of semistandard tableaux. In this article, we introduce a super analogue of the RSK correspondence for super tableaux over a signed alphabet using a super version of Schensted's insertion algorithms. We give a geometrical interpretation of the super-RSK correspondence by a matrix-ball construction, showing the symmetry property in complete generality. We deduce a combinatorial version of the super Littlewood-Richardson rule on super Schur functions over a finite signed alphabet. Finally, we introduce the notion of super Littlewood-Richardson skew tableaux and we give another combinatorial interpretation of the super Littlewood-Richardson rule.
