The sl_3 spider is a diagrammatic category used to study the representation theory of the quantum group U_q(sl_3). The morphisms in this category are generated by a basis of non-elliptic webs. Khovanov- Kuperberg observed that non-elliptic webs are indexed by semistandard Young tableaux. They establish this bijection via a recursive growth algorithm. Recently, Tymoczko gave a simple version of this bijection in the case that the tableaux are standard and used it to study rotation and joins of webs. We build on Tymoczko's bijection to give a simple and explicit algorithm for constructing all non-elliptic sl_3 webs.
Sequences of labeled trees related to Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns

By rewriting the famous hook-content formula it easily follows that there are $\prod\limits_{1 \le i < j \le n} \frac{k_j - k_i + j -i}{j-i}$ semistandard tableaux of shape $(k_n,k_{n-1},...,k_1)$ with entries in $\{1,2,...,n\}$ or, equivalently, Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns with bottom row $(k_1,...,k_n)$. In this article we introduce certain sequences of labeled trees, the signed enumeration of which is also given by this formula. In these trees, vertices as well as edges are labeled, the crucial condition being that each edge label lies between the vertex labels of the two endpoints of the edge. This notion enables us to give combinatorial explanations of the shifted antisymmetry of the formula and its polynomiality. Furthermore, we propose to develop an analog approach of combinatorial reasoning for monotone triangles and explain how this may lead to a combinatorial understanding of the alternating sign matrix theorem.
Matching polytopes and Specht modules

We prove that the dimension of the Specht module of a forest $G$ is the same as the normalized volume of the matching polytope of $G$. We also associate to $G$ a symmetric function $s_G$ (analogous to the Schur symmetric function $s_λ$ for a partition $λ$) and investigate its combinatorial and representation-theoretic properties in relation to the Specht module and Schur module of $G$. We then use this to define notions of standard and semistandard tableaux for forests.

We define a set of operations called crystal operations on matrices with entries either in {0,1} or in N. There are horizontal and vertical crystal operations, giving rise to two commuting structures of a crystal graph on these matrices. They provide a new perspective on many aspects of the RSK correspondence and its dual, and related constructions. Under a straightforward encoding of semistandard tableaux by matrices, the operations correspond to crystal operations on tableaux, respectively to individual moves occurring during a jeu de taquin slide. We show that the (dual) RSK correspondence and the Burge correspondence arise as decompositions: a matrix M can be transformed by crystal operations into each of the matrices encoding P and Q symbol associated to M under these correspondences, and it can be reconstructed from P and Q.
These decomposition can also be interpreted as computing Robinson's correspondence, or as the Robinson-Schensted correspondence for pictures. From a particular way of applying crystal operations, the computation of these decompositions by growth diagrams can be deduced, as well as the local rules that are to be used. We show that that crystal operations leave a version of Greene's poset invariant defined for matrices unchanged, so that for such questions in the setting of matrices they can take the place of elementary Knuth transformations on words.

Let X,Y be finite sets and T a set of functions from X -> Y which we will call "tableaux". We define a simplicial complex whose facets, all of the same dimension, correspond to these tableaux. Such "tableau complexes" have many nice properties, and are frequently homeomorphic to balls, which we prove using vertex decompositions.
In our motivating example, the facets are labeled by semistandard Young tableaux, and the more general interior faces are labeled by Buch's set-valued semistandard tableaux. One vertex decomposition of this "Young tableau complex" parallels Lascoux's transition formula for vexillary double Grothendieck polynomials. Consequently, we obtain formulae (both old and new) for these polynomials. In particular, we present a common generalization of the formulae of Wachs and Buch, each of which implies the classical tableau formula for Schur polynomials.

Two conjectures of Zuber [``On the counting of fully packed loops configurations. Some new conjectures,'' preprint] on the enumeration of configurations in the fully packed loop model on the square grid with periodic boundary conditions, which have a prescribed linkage pattern, are proved. Following an idea of de Gier [``Loops, matchings and alternating-sign matrices,'' Discrete Math., to appear], the proofs are based on bijections between such fully packed loop configurations and rhombus tilings, and the hook-content formula for semistandard tableaux.
A method for proving polynomial enumeration formulas

We present an elementary method for proving enumeration formulas which are polynomials in certain parameters if others are fixed and factorize into distinct linear factors over Z. Roughly speaking the idea is to prove such formulas by ``explaining'' their zeros using an appropriate combinatorial extension of the objects under consideration to negative integer parameters. We apply this method to prove a new refinement of the Bender-Knuth (ex-)Conjecture, which easily implies the Bender-Knuth (ex-)Conjecture itself. This is probably the most elementary way to prove this result currently known. Furthermore we adapt our method to q-polynomials, which allows us to derive generating function results as well. Finally we use this method to give another proof for the enumeration of semistandard tableaux of a fixed shape, which is opposed to the Bender-Knuth (ex-)Conjecture refinement a multivariate application of our method.

We answer some questions related to multiplicity formulas by Rosenthal and Zelevinsky and by Lakshmibai and Weyman for points on Schubert varieties in Grassmannians. In particular, we give combinatorial interpretations in terms of nonintersecting lattice paths of these formulas, which makes the equality of the two formulas immediately obvious. Furthermore we provide an alternative determinantal formula for these multiplicities, and we show that they count semistandard tableaux of unusual shapes.
Some bijective correspondences involving domino tableaux

We define a number of new combinatorial operations on skew semistandard domino tableaux, which together with constructions introduced earlier by C. Carre and B. Leclerc, define an elegant structure on the set of these tableaux, that closely parallels the structure defined in [math.CO/9908099] for ordinary skew semistandard tableaux, that is related to the Littlewood-Richardson rule. These operations are: (1) a bijection between semistandard domino tableaux and certain pairs of ordinary tableaux of the same weight that together fill the same shape; (2) a weight preserving transformation of domino tableaux to ordinary tableaux of a related shape (the correspondence involves 2-quotients) with the property that Yamanouchi domino tableaux correspond precisely to Littlewood-Richardson tableaux; (3) a correspondence between Yamanouchi domino tableaux of shape $λ$ and weight $μ$ and Yamanouchi domino tableaux of shape $μ'$ and weight $λ$, where $μ'$ is $μ$ scaled by a factor 2. The property at the heart of the structure so defined is that operations (1) and (2) commute with the coplactic operations (implicitly) defined by Carre and Leclerc. (1) elucidates their bijection analogous to that of Robinson (a.k.a. the Robinson-Schensted correspondence), while the operation of moving chains in domino tableaux underlying (2) is very similar to jeu de taquin.
Another involution principle-free bijective proof of Stanley's hook-content formula

Another bijective proof of Stanley's hook-content formula for the generating function for semistandard tableaux of a given shape is given that does not involve the involution principle of Garsia and Milne. It is the result of a merge of the modified jeu de taquin idea from the author's previous bijective proof (``An involution principle-free bijective proof of Stanley's hook-content formula", Discrete Math. Theoret. Computer Science, to appear) and the Novelli-Pak-Stoyanovskii bijection (Discrete Math. Theoret. Computer Science 1 (1997), 53-67) for the hook formula for standard Young tableaux of a given shape. This new algorithm can also be used as an algorithm for the random generation of tableaux of a given shape with bounded entries. An appropriate deformation of this algorithm gives an algorithm for the random generation of plane partitions inside a given box.
