Explicit characterization of $\widehat{\mathfrak{g}}$-dominant tableaux for $n\le 4$ via $1$-$0$-slack recording tableaux in the quantum Littlewood-Richardson rule and other bijections
Previously we have explicitly characterized by certain linear inequalities the ${\mathfrak{k}}$-highest weight tableaux in the quantum Littlewood-Richardson (LR) rule produced by $1$-$0$-slack recording tableaux. Using the composition of promotion operators to defining the Naito-Suzuki-Watanabe bijection between ${\mathfrak{k}}$-highest weight tableaux and $\widehat{\mathfrak{g}}$-dominant tableaux, we now explicitly characterize by certain linear inequalities the $\widehat{\mathfrak{g}}$-dominant tableaux for $n\le 4$ produced by $1$-$0$-slack recording tableaux in the quantum Littlewood-Richardson rule. Since recording tableaux in the quantum Littlewood-Richardson rule are in natural bijection with Littlewood-Richardson-Sundaram tableaux, we relate our results with other bijections for the Naito-Sagaki conjecture.

A Littlewood-Richardson Rule for Forest Polynomials via the Schubert Bialgebra
The forest polynomials $\mathfrak{P}_a$ of Nadeau-Tewari form a $\mathbb{Z}$-basis of $\mathbb{Z}[x_1, x_2, \dots]$ whose role for the cohomology of the quasisymmetric flag variety parallels that of Schubert polynomials for the classical flag variety. Nonnegativity of the structure constants $β^c_{a,b}$ in $\mathfrak{P}_a \mathfrak{P}_b = \sum_c β^c_{a,b} \mathfrak{P}_c$ is known, but no Littlewood-Richardson-style enumerative rule has been available. We give such a rule: $β^c_{a,b}$ counts pairs of forest RC graphs of forest-codes $a$ and $b$ whose lift product lands on a forest RC graph of forest-code and weight both equal to $c$. The same rule descends to the cup product on $H^\bullet(QFl_n)$. The proof introduces a Schubert bialgebra $\mathcal{A}$ and lifts the multiplication on its graded dual $\mathcal{D}$ to a product on a free abelian group $\mathcal{B}RC$ of bounded RC graphs; the same machinery yields enumerative LR rules for the dual Schubert, dual key, dual forest, and dual slide bases of $\mathcal{D}$.

Hall-Littlewood functions in noncommuting variables
In 2022 Aliniaeifard, Li, and van Willigenburg defined Schur functions in the algebra of symmetric functions in noncommuting variables (NCSym), answering an open question posed by Rosas and Sagan in 2004. These Schur functions are not monomial positive, since they are defined via a noncommutative analogue of the Jacobi-Trudi determinant. We introduce Hall-Littlewood functions ${\bf P}_π({\bf x};t)$ indexed by set partitions $π$ in noncommuting variables ${\bf x}=({\bf x}_1,{\bf x}_2,\ldots)$, and define Schur functions in noncommuting variables to be ${\bf s}_π({\bf x})={\bf P}_π({\bf x};0)$. We prove that the set of Hall-Littlewood functions $\{{\bf P}_π({\bf x};t)\}$ for all set partitions $π$ of $[n]$ forms a $\mathbb{Q}[t]$-basis of NCSym of homogeneous degree $n$, and that this basis is invariant under any permutation acting on set partitions. These Hall-Littlewood functions in NCSym map to classical Hall-Littlewood functions under commutation, up to a scalar factor. We also show that the Hall-Littlewood functions ${\bf P}_π({\bf x};t)$ naturally refine the lifted Hall-Littlewood functions in NCSym. Specifically, the Schur functions ${\bf s}_π({\bf x})$ are monomial positive and refine the lifted Schur function introduced by Rosas and Sagan. Moreover, we introduce a star product of two polynomials in NCSym and develop the star-multiplication rule for a lifted and a non-lifted Hall-Littlewood functions in NCSym. This rule is a noncommutative analogue of the product rule for two Hall-Littlewood functions and, in particular, of the Littlewood-Richardson rule. Finally, our approach extends to the algebra of quasisymmetric functions in noncommuting variables (NCQSym) indexed by set compositions.

Partition division maps, symmetric functions and positivity
We introduce a linear map on symmetric functions that 'divides' a partition by a positive integer $k$, sending a Schur function indexed by a partition of $kn$ to a symmetric function indexed by partitions of $n$. We prove that the image of this map is always Schur-positive, meaning it expands in the Schur basis with nonnegative integer coefficients. These coefficients are enumerated by a new family of combinatorial objects, called $k$-Yamanouchi tableaux, which generalize the classical ballot (Yamanouchi) tableaux appearing in the Littlewood-Richardson rule. We also obtain expansions in the power-sum basis and establish power-sum positivity. A further application establishes a connection to work of Tewodros Amdeberhan, John Shareshian, and Richard Stanley on alternating permutations and Euler numbers.

The Littlewood-Richardson rule for Schur multiple zeta functions
The Schur multiple zeta function was defined as a multivariable function by Nakasuji-Phuksuwan-Yamasaki. Inspired by the product formula of Schur functions, the products of Schur multiple zeta functions have been studied. While the product of two Schur functions expands as a linear combination of Schur functions, it is known that a similar expansion for the product of Schur multiple zeta functions can be obtained by symmetrizing, i.e., by taking the summation over all permutations of the variables. In this paper, we present a more refined formula by restricting the summation from the full symmetric group to its specific subgroup.

Gröbner crystal structures
We develop a theory of bicrystalline ideals, synthesizing Gröbner basis techniques and Kashiwara's crystal theory. This provides a unified algebraic, combinatorial, and computational approach that applies to ideals of interest, old and new. The theory concerns ideals in the coordinate ring of matrices, stable under the action of some Levi group, whose quotients admit standard bases equipped with a crystal structure. We construct an effective algorithm to decide if an ideal is bicrystalline. When the answer is affirmative, we provide a uniform, generalized Littlewood-Richardson rule for computing the multiplicity of irreducible representations either for the quotient or the ideal itself.

A contratableau model for K-theoretic Littlewood-Richardson rule
The K-theoretic Littlewood-Richardson rule, established by A. Buch, is a combinatorial method for counting the structure constants involved in the product of two Grothendieck polynomials of Grassmannian type. In this paper, we provide an explicit combinatorial formula in terms of set-valued contratableau for the K-theoretic Littlewood-Richardson rule generalizing contratableau model for the classical Littlewood-Richardson rule given by Carré.
Constructed tableaux and a new shifted Littlewood-Richardson rule
We give a new Littlewood-Richardson rule for the Schubert structure coefficients of isotropic Grassmannians, equivalently for the multiplication of $P$-Schur functions. Serrano (2010) previously gave a formula in terms of classes in his shifted plactic monoid. However, this formula is challenging to use because of the difficulty of characterizing shifted plactic classes. We give the first algebraic proof of this formula. We then use it to obtain a new rule that is easy to implement. Our rule is based on identifying a subtle analogue of Yamanouchi tableaux, which we characterize. We show that for some families of structure coefficients, our rule leads to an algorithm with exponentially better time complexity than the original rule of Stembridge (1989).

Machine Checked Proofs and Programs in Algebraic Combinatorics
Published in CPP 2025, Proceedings of the 14th ACM SIGPLAN International Conference on Certified Programs and Proofs • View PublicationBIB
We present a library of formalized results around symmetric functions and the character theory of symmetric groups. Written in Coq/Rocq and based on the Mathematical Components library, it covers a large part of the contents of a graduate level textbook in the field. The flagship result is a proof of the Littlewood-Richardson rule, which computes the structure constants of the algebra of symmetric function in the schur basis which are integer numbers appearing in various fields of mathematics, and which has a long history of wrong proofs. A specific feature of algebraic combinatorics is the constant interplay between algorithms and algebraic constructions: algorithms are not only in computations, but also are key ingredients in definitions and proofs. As such, the proof of the Littlewood-Richardson rule deeply relies on the understanding of the execution of the Robinson-Schensted algorithm. Many results in this library are effective and actually used in computer algebra systems, and we discuss their certified implementation.
A universal characterization of the shifted plactic monoid
The plactic monoid $\mathbf{P}$ of Lascoux and Schützenberger (1981) plays an important role in proofs of the Littlewood-Richardson rule for computing multiplicities in the linear representation theory of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ and the cohomology of Grassmannians. Commonly, $\mathbf{P}$ is defined as a quotient of a free monoid by relations derived from a careful analysis of Schensted's insertion algorithm and the jeu de taquin algorithm on semistandard Young tableaux. However, Lascoux and Schützenberger also gave an intrinsic characterization of $\mathbf{P}$ via a universal property. Serrano's (2010) shifted plactic monoid $\mathbf{S}$ is an analogue of $\mathbf{P}$ that governs instead the projective representation theory of $\mathfrak{S}_n$ and the cohomology of isotropic Grassmannians. We provide a universal property for $\mathbf{S}$, analogous to the Lascoux-Schützenberger characterization of $\mathbf{P}$.

Chevalley Polytopes and Newton-Okounkov Bodies
We construct a family of polytopes, which we call Chevalley polytopes, associated to homogeneous spaces $X=G/P$ in their projective embeddings $X\hookrightarrow \mathbb{P}(V_{\varpi})$ together with a choice of reduced expression for the minimal coset representative $w^P$ of $w_0$ in $W/W_P$. When $X$ is minuscule in its minimal embedding, we describe our construction in terms of order polytopes of minuscule posets and use the associated combinatorics to show that minuscule Chevalley polytopes are Newton-Okounkov bodies for $X$ and that the Plücker coordinates on $X$ form a Khovanskii basis for $\mathbb{C}[X]$. We conjecture similar properties for general $X$ and general embeddings $X\hookrightarrow\mathbb{P}(V_\varpi)$, along with a remarkable decomposition property which we consider as a polytopal shadow of the Littlewood-Richardson rule. We highlight a connection between Chevalley polytopes and string polytopes and give examples where Chevalley polytopes possess better combinatorial properties than string polytopes. We conclude with several examples further illustrating and supporting our conjectures.

Representations from matrix varieties, and filtered RSK
Matrix Schubert varieties (Fulton '92) carry natural actions of Levi groups. Their coordinate rings are thereby Levi-representations; what is a combinatorial counting rule for the multiplicities of their irreducibles? When the Levi group is a torus, (Knutson-Miller '04) answers the question. We present a general solution, a common refinement of the multigraded Hilbert series, the Cauchy identity, and the Littlewood-Richardson rule. Our result applies to any ``bicrystalline'' algebraic variety; we define these using the operators of (Kashiwara '95) and of (Danilov-Koshevoi '05, van Leeuwen '06). The proof introduces a ``filtered'' generalization of the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence.

Temperley-Lieb Crystals
Elements of Lusztig's dual canonical bases are Schur-positive when evaluated on (generalized) Jacobi-Trudi matrices. This deep property was proved by Rhoades and Skandera, relying on a result of Haiman, and ultimately on the (proof of) Kazhdan-Lusztig conjecture. For a particularly tractable part of the dual canonical basis - called Temperley-Lieb immanants - we give a generalization of Littlewood-Richardson rule: we provide a combinatorial interpretation for the coefficient of a particular Schur function in the evaluation of a particular Temperley-Lieb immanant on a particular Jacobi-Trudi matrix. For this we introduce shuffle tableaux, and apply Stembridge's axioms to show that certain graphs on shuffle tableaux are type $A$ Kashiwara crystals.

A Molev-Sagan type formula for double Schubert polynomials
Published in Journal of Pure and Applied Algebra, Volume 228, Issue 7 (2024) • View PublicationBIB
We give a Molev-Sagan type formula for computing the product $\mathfrak{S}_u(x;y)\mathfrak{S}_v(x;z)$ of two double Schubert polynomials in different sets of coefficient variables where the descents of $u$ and $v$ satisfy certain conditions that encompass Molev and Sagan's original case and conjecture positivity in the general case. Additionally, we provide a Pieri formula for multiplying an arbitrary double Schubert polynomial $\mathfrak{S}_u(x;y)$ by a factorial elementary symmetric polynomial $E_{p,k}(x;z)$. Both formulas remain positive in terms of the negative roots when we set $y=z$, so in particular this gives a new equivariant Littlewood-Richardson rule for the Grassmannian, and more generally a positive formula for multiplying a factorial Schur polynomial $s_λ(x_1,\ldots,x_m;y)$ by a double Schubert polynomial $\mathfrak{S}_v(x_1,\ldots,x_p;y)$ such that $m\geq p$. An additional new result we present is a combinatorial proof of a conjecture of Kirillov of nonnegativity of the coefficients of skew Schubert polynomials, and we conjecture a weight-preserving bijection between a modification of certain diagrams used in our formulas and RC-graphs/pipe dreams arising in formulas for double Schubert polynomials.

Lascoux expansion of the product of a Lascoux and a stable Grothendieck
This paper gives a tableau formula for expanding the product of a Lascoux polynomial and a stable Grothendieck polynomial into Lascoux polynomials. Lascoux and stable Grothendieck polynomials are inhomogeneous analogues of key polynomials and Stanley symmetric functions, respectively. Our formula refines the K-theoretic Littlewood-Richardson rule of Buch and extends the key expansion of key times Schur established by Haglund, Luoto, Mason, and van Willigenburg. Our proof is combinatorial, relying heavily on a novel row insertion algorithm of Huang, Shimozono and Yu.

Computational Complexity in Algebraic Combinatorics
Algebraic Combinatorics originated in Algebra and Representation Theory, studying their discrete objects and integral quantities via combinatorial methods which have since developed independent and self-contained lives and brought us some beautiful formulas and combinatorial interpretations. The flagship hook-length formula counts the number of Standard Young Tableaux, which also gives the dimension of the irreducible Specht modules of the Symmetric group. The elegant Littlewood-Richardson rule gives the multiplicities of irreducible GL-modules in the tensor products of GL-modules. Such formulas and rules have inspired large areas of study and development beyond Algebra and Combinatorics, becoming applicable to Integrable Probability and Statistical Mechanics, and Computational Complexity Theory. We will see what lies beyond the reach of such nice product formulas and combinatorial interpretations and enter the realm of Computational Complexity Theory, that could formally explain the beauty we see and the difficulties we encounter in finding further formulas and ``combinatorial interpretations''. A 85-year-old such problem asks for a positive combinatorial formula for the Kronecker coefficients of the Symmetric group, another one pertains to the plethysm coefficients of the General Linear group. In the opposite direction, the study of Kronecker and plethysm coefficients leads to the disproof of the wishful approach of Geometric Complexity Theory (GCT) towards the resolution of the algebraic P vs NP Millennium problem, the VP vs VNP problem. In order to make GCT work and establish computational complexity lower bounds, we need to understand representation theoretic multiplicities in further detail, possibly asymptotically.

The Pieri formulas and the Littlewood-Richardson rule for Schur multiple zeta functions
We prove the Pieri formulas for Schur multiple zeta functions, which are generalizations of the Pieri formulas proved by Nakasuji and Takeda for hook type Schur multiple zeta functions. Moreover, we also prove the Littlewood-Richardson rule for Schur multiple zeta functions. In the course of their proofs, we regard the `truncated' version of Schur multiple zeta functions as series over $\mathrm{GL}(N)$ crystals to arrive at the Littlewood-Richardson rule for the Schur multiple zeta functions.

Pieri rules for skew dual immaculate functions

In this paper we give Pieri rules for skew dual immaculate functions and their recently discovered row-strict counterparts. We establish our rules using a right-action analogue of the skew Littlewood-Richardson rule for Hopf algebras of Lam-Lauve-Sottile. We also obtain Pieri rules for row-strict (dual) immaculate functions.

On Seidel representation in quantum K-theory of Grassmannians
Published • View PublicationBIB
We provide a direct proof of Seidel representation in the quantum K-theory QK(Gr(k, n)) by studying projected Gromov-Witten varieties concretely. As applications, we give an alternative proof of the K-theoretic quantum Pieri rule by Buch and Mihalcea, reduce certain quantum Schubert structure constants of higher degree to classical Littlewood-Richardson coefficients for K(Gr(k, n)), and provide a quantum Littlewood-Richardson rule for QK(Gr(3, n)).
