Newton-Okounkov bodies for nested Hilbert schemes
We study sections of line bundles on the nested Hilbert scheme of points on the affine plane. We describe the spaces of sections in terms of certain ideals introduced by Haiman, and find explicit bases for them by analyzing the trailing terms in some monomial order. As a consequence, we compute the Newton-Okounkov bodies for nested Hilbert schemes.

Positivity in the shadow of Hodge index theorem
Taking a compact Kähler manifold as playground, we explore the powerfulness of Hodge index theorem. A main object is the Lorentzian classes on a compact Kähler manifold, behind which the characterization via Lorentzian polynomials over the Kähler cone and hence the validity of Hodge index theorem. Along the exploration, we discover several applications in complex geometry that may be unexpected before. (1) For a Lefschetz type operator given by the complete intersection of nef classes, we give a complete characterization of its kernel face against the pseudo-effective cone. (2) We provide a new approach to Teissier's proportionality problem from the validity of hard Lefschetz property. This perspective enables us to establish the extremals for the Brunn-Minkowski inequality on a strictly Lorentzian class, and thus also characterize the most extremal case for a log-concavity sequence given by the intersection numbers of two nef classes. These Lorentzian classes include the fundamental classes of smooth projective varieties or compact Kähler manifolds as typical examples, hence our result extends Boucksom-Favre-Jonsson's and Fu-Xiao's results in respective settings to broader contexts, e.g. certain algebraic cycle classes given by reducible subvarieties. (3) Furthermore, we also strengthen the proportionality characterization by comparing various quantitative deficits and establishing stability estimates. Two quantitative sharper stability estimates with close relation with complex Monge--Ampère equations and Newton-Okounkov bodies are also discussed.

Newton-Okounkov bodies obtained from certain orbits of plabic graphs
We investigate the plabic graphs corresponding to the quadrilateral Postnikov arrangements used by J.Scott to equip the homogeneous coordinate rings of Grassmannians with a cluster structure. More precisely we describe their orbits under the natural action of the dihedral group and show that the associated Newton-Okounkov bodies are all unimodular equivalent to Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes.

Chevalley Polytopes and Newton-Okounkov Bodies
We construct a family of polytopes, which we call Chevalley polytopes, associated to homogeneous spaces $X=G/P$ in their projective embeddings $X\hookrightarrow \mathbb{P}(V_{\varpi})$ together with a choice of reduced expression for the minimal coset representative $w^P$ of $w_0$ in $W/W_P$. When $X$ is minuscule in its minimal embedding, we describe our construction in terms of order polytopes of minuscule posets and use the associated combinatorics to show that minuscule Chevalley polytopes are Newton-Okounkov bodies for $X$ and that the Plücker coordinates on $X$ form a Khovanskii basis for $\mathbb{C}[X]$. We conjecture similar properties for general $X$ and general embeddings $X\hookrightarrow\mathbb{P}(V_\varpi)$, along with a remarkable decomposition property which we consider as a polytopal shadow of the Littlewood-Richardson rule. We highlight a connection between Chevalley polytopes and string polytopes and give examples where Chevalley polytopes possess better combinatorial properties than string polytopes. We conclude with several examples further illustrating and supporting our conjectures.

A superpotential for Grassmannian Schubert varieties
While mirror symmetry for flag varieties and Grassmannians has been extensively studied, Schubert varieties in the Grassmannian are singular, and hence standard mirror symmetry statements are not well-defined. Nevertheless, in this article we introduce a ``superpotential'' $W^λ$ for each Grassmannian Schubert variety $X_λ$, generalizing the Marsh-Rietsch superpotential for Grassmannians, and we show that $W^λ$ governs many toric degenerations of $X_λ$. We also generalize the ``polytopal mirror theorem'' for Grassmannians from our previous work: namely, for any cluster seed $G$ for $X_λ$, we construct a corresponding Newton-Okounkov convex body $Δ_G^λ$, and show that it coincides with the superpotential polytope $Γ_G^λ$, that is, it is cut out by the inequalities obtained by tropicalizing an associated Laurent expansion of $W^λ$. This gives us a toric degeneration of the Schubert variety $X_λ$ to the (singular) toric variety $Y(\mathcal{N}_λ)$ of the Newton-Okounkov body. Finally, for a particular cluster seed $G=G^λ_{\mathrm{rec}}$ we show that the toric variety $Y(\mathcal{N}_λ)$ has a small toric desingularisation, and we describe an intermediate partial desingularisation $Y(\mathcal{F}_λ)$ that is Gorenstein Fano. Many of our results extend to more general varieties in the Grassmannian.

Toric degenerations and Newton-Okounkov bodies
In recent times, a wide variety of combinatorics has been introduced in order to solve problems from algebraic geometry. Newton-Okounkov bodies and tropical geometry are two such combinatorial theories. As shown by Kaveh and Manon, there is a certain correspondence between these two. Building on this correspondence, and exploiting the link of both theories to toric degenerations, Harada and Escobar obtained their wall-crossing result for prime cones. This result states that moving between two adjacent prime maximal cones in a tropical variety corresponds to a mutation between the associated Newton-Okounkov bodies of these cones. In this thesis, we provide a method for applying the wall-crossing result to non-prime cones. Our approach uses a procedure developed by Bossinger, Lamboglia, Mincheva and Mohammadi in order to compute an embedding which changes a tropical variety in such a way that a non-prime cone becomes prime. Assuming that adjacent cones stay adjacent, the wall-crossing result can then be applied in this new embedding. Building on computations by Clarke, Mohammadi and Zaffalon, we show that for Gr(3,6), this approach works. We compute the new embedding and its tropicalization in this case, and study the relation between cones in the new embedding and the original embedding.

Schubert valuations on Grassmann varieties
The goal of the paper is twofold: on one side it provides an order structure on the set of all maximal chains in the Bruhat poset of Schubert varieties in a Grassmann variety; on the other hand, using this order structure, it works out explicit formulae for the valuation and the Newton-Okounkov body associated to each maximal chain appearing in the framework of Seshadri stratification.

On combinatorics of string polytopes in types $B$ and $C$
A string polytope is a rational convex polytope whose lattice points parametrize a highest weight crystal basis, which is obtained from a string cone by explicit affine inequalities depending on a highest weight. It also inherits geometric information of a flag variety such as toric degenerations, Newton-Okounkov bodies, mirror symmetry, Schubert calculus, and so on. In this paper, we study combinatorial properties of string polytopes in types $B$ and $C$ by giving an explicit description of string cones in these types which is analogous to Gleizer-Postnikov's description of string cones in type $A$. As an application, we characterize string polytopes in type $C$ which are unimodularly equivalent to the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope in type $C$ for a specific highest weight.

Geometry of higher rank valuations
The aim of this paper is to introduce a certain number of tools and results suitable for the study of valuations of higher rank on function fields of algebraic varieties. This will be based on a study of higher rank quasi-monomial valuations taking values in the lexicographically ordered group R^k. We prove a duality theorem that gives a geometric realization of higher rank quasi-monomial valuations as tangent cones of dual cone complexes. Using this duality, we provide an analytic description of quasi-monomial valuations as multi-directional derivative operators on tropical functions. We consider moreover a refined notion of tropicalization in which we remember the initial terms of power series on each cone of a dual complex, and prove a tropical analogue of the weak approximation theorem in number theory by showing that any compatible collection of initial terms on cones of a dual cone complex is the refined tropicalization of a rational function in the function field of the variety. Endowing the value group R^k with its Euclidean topology, we study then a natural topology on spaces of higher rank valuations that we call the tropical topology. By using the approximation theorem we provide an explicit description of the tropical topology on tangent cones of dual cone complexes. Finally, we show that tangent cones of dual complexes provide a notion of skeleton in higher rank non-archimedean geometry. That is, generalizing the picture in rank one to higher rank, we construct retraction maps to tangent cones of dual cone complexes, and use them to obtain limit formulae in which we reconstruct higher rank non-archimedian spaces with their tropical topology as the projective limit of their higher rank skeleta. We conjecture that these higher rank skeleta provide appropriate bases for the study of variations of Newton-Okounkov bodies.
Combinatorial Mutations of Gelfand-Tsetlin Polytopes, Feigin-Fourier-Littelmann-Vinberg Polytopes, and Block Diagonal Matching Field Polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Gelfand-Tsetlin and the Feigin-Fourier-Littelmann-Vinberg polytopes for the Grassmannians are defined, from the perspective of representation theory, to parametrize certain bases for highest weight irreducible modules. These polytopes are Newton-Okounkov bodies for the Grassmannian and, in particular, the GT-polytope is an example of a string polytope. The polytopes admit a combinatorial description as the Stanley's order and chain polytopes of a certain poset, as shown by Ardila, Bliem and Salaza. We prove that these polytopes occur among matching field polytopes. Moreover, we show that they are related by a sequence of combinatorial mutations that passes only through matching field polytopes. As a result, we obtain a family of matching fields that give rise to toric degenerations for the Grassmannians. Moreover, all polytopes in the family are Newton-Okounkov bodies for the Grassmannians.
Toric degenerations of partial flag varieties and combinatorial mutations of matching field polytopes
Published in Journal of Algebra 2023 • View PublicationBIB
We study toric degenerations arising from Gröbner degenerations or the tropicalization of partial flag varieties. We produce a new family of toric degenerations of partial flag varieties whose combinatorics are governed by matching fields and combinatorial mutations of polytopes. We provide an explicit description of the polytopes associated with the resulting toric varieties in terms of matching field polytopes. These polytopes encode the combinatorial data of monomial degenerations of Plücker forms for the Grassmannians. We give a description of matching field polytopes of flag varieties as Minkowski sums and show that all such polytopes are normal. The polytopes we obtain are examples of Newton-Okounkov bodies for particular full-rank valuations for flag varieties. Furthermore, we study a certain explicitly-defined large family of matching field polytopes and prove that all polytopes in this family are connected by combinatorial mutations. Finally, we apply our methods to explicitly compute toric degenerations of small Grassmannians and flag varieties and obtain new families of toric degenerations.

LS Algebras, Valuations and Schubert Varieties

In this paper, we propose an algebraic approach via Lakshmibai-Seshadri (LS) algebras to establish a link between standard monomial theories, Newton-Okounkov bodies and valuations. This is applied to Schubert varieties, where this approach is compatible with the one using Seshadri stratifications by the same authors (arXiv:2112.03776), showing that LS paths encode vanishing multiplicities with respect to the web of Schubert varieties.

Effective divisors and Newton-Okounkov bodies of Hilbert schemes of points on toric surfaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
We compute the (unbounded) Newton-Okounkov body of the Hilbert scheme of points on $\mathbb C^2$. We obtain an upper bound for the Newton-Okounkov body of the Hilbert scheme of points on any smooth toric surface. We conjecture that this upper bound coincides with the exact Newton-Okounkov body for the Hilbert schemes of points on $\mathbb P^2$, $\mathbb P^1\times\mathbb P^1$, and Hirzebruch surfaces. These results imply upper bounds for the effective cones of these Hilbert schemes, which are also conjecturally sharp in the above cases.

Newton-Okounkov polytopes of flag varieties and marked chain-order polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Marked chain-order polytopes are convex polytopes constructed from a marked poset, which give a discrete family relating a marked order polytope with a marked chain polytope. In this paper, we consider the Gelfand-Tsetlin poset of type A, and realize the associated marked chain-order polytopes as Newton-Okounkov bodies of the flag variety. Our realization connects previous realizations of Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes and Feigin-Fourier-Littelmann-Vinberg polytopes as Newton-Okounkov bodies in a uniform way. As an application, we prove that the flag variety degenerates into the irreducible normal projective toric variety corresponding to a marked chain-order polytope. We also construct a specific basis of an irreducible highest weight representation which is naturally parametrized by the set of lattice points in a marked chain-order polytope.

Multigraded algebras and multigraded linear series
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper is devoted to the study of multigraded algebras and multigraded linear series. For an $\mathbb{N}^s$-graded algebra $A$, we define and study its volume function $F_A:\mathbb{N}_+^s\to \mathbb{R}$, which computes the asymptotics of the Hilbert function of $A$. We relate the volume function $F_A$ to the volume of the fibers of the global Newton-Okounkov body $Δ(A)$ of $A$. Unlike the classical case of standard multigraded algebras, the volume function $F_A$ is not a polynomial in general. However, in the case when the algebra $A$ has a decomposable grading, we show that the volume function $F_A$ is a polynomial with non-negative coefficients. We then define mixed multiplicities in this case and provide a full characterization for their positivity. Furthermore, we apply our results on multigraded algebras to multigraded linear series. Our work recovers and unifies recent developments on mixed multiplicities. In particular, we recover results on the existence of mixed multiplicities for (not necessarily Noetherian) graded families of ideals and on the positivity of the multidegrees of multiprojective varieties.

Cluster Duality for Lagrangian and Orthogonal Grassmannians
Published • View PublicationBIB
In [RW19] Rietsch and Williams relate cluster structures and mirror symmetry for type A Grassmannians Gr(k, n), and use this interaction to construct Newton-Okounkov bodies and associated toric degenerations. In this article we define a cluster seed for the Lagrangian Grassmannian, and prove that the associated Newton-Okounkov body agrees up to unimodular equivalence with a polytope obtained from the superpotential defined by Pech and Rietsch on the mirror Orthogonal Grassmannian in [PR13].
Combinatorial Mutations and Block Diagonal Polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Matching fields were introduced by Sturmfels and Zelevinsky to study certain Newton polytopes and more recently have been shown to give rise to toric degenerations of various families of varieties. Whenever a matching field gives rise to a toric degeneration, the associated polytope of the toric variety coincides with the matching field polytope. We study combinatorial mutations, which are analogues of cluster mutations for polytopes, of matching field polytopes and show that the property of giving rise to a toric degeneration of the Grassmannians, is preserved by mutation. Moreover the polytopes arising through mutations are Newton-Okounkov bodies for the Grassmannians with respect to certain full-rank valuations. We produce a large family of such polytopes, extending the family of so-called block diagonal matching fields.

Newton-Okounkov bodies of flag varieties and combinatorial mutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
A Newton-Okounkov body is a convex body constructed from a projective variety with a globally generated line bundle and with a higher rank valuation on the function field, which gives a systematic method of constructing toric degenerations of projective varieties. Its combinatorial properties heavily depend on the choice of a valuation, and it is a fundamental problem to relate Newton-Okounkov bodies associated with different kinds of valuations. In this paper, we address this problem for flag varieties using the framework of combinatorial mutations which was introduced in the context of mirror symmetry for Fano manifolds. By applying iterated combinatorial mutations, we connect specific Newton-Okounkov bodies of flag varieties including string polytopes, Nakashima-Zelevinsky polytopes, and FFLV polytopes.

Newton-Okounkov polytopes of Schubert varieties arising from cluster structures

The theory of Newton-Okounkov bodies is a generalization of that of Newton polytopes for toric varieties, and it gives a systematic method of constructing toric degenerations of projective varieties. In this paper, we study Newton-Okounkov bodies of Schubert varieties from the theory of cluster algebras. We construct Newton-Okounkov bodies using specific valuations which generalize extended g-vectors in cluster theory, and discuss how these bodies are related to string polytopes and Nakashima-Zelevinsky polytopes.

Wall-crossing for Newton-Okounkov bodies and the tropical Grassmannian
Published • View PublicationBIB
Tropical geometry and the theory of Newton-Okounkov bodies are two methods which produce toric degenerations of an irreducible complex projective variety. Kaveh-Manon showed that the two are related. We give geometric maps between the Newton-Okounkov bodies corresponding to two adjacent maximal-dimensional prime cones in the tropicalization of $X$. Under a technical condition, we produce a natural "algebraic wall-crossing" map on the underlying value semigroups (of the corresponding valuations). In the case of the tropical Grassmannian $Gr(2,m)$, we prove that the algebraic wall-crossing map is the restriction of a geometric map. In an Appendix by Nathan Ilten, he explains how the geometric wall-crossing phenomenon can also be derived from the perspective of complexity-one $T$-varieties; Ilten also explains the connection to the "combinatorial mutations" studied by Akhtar-Coates-Galkin-Kasprzyk.
