Twisted primitive group association schemes
We give results on the question of whether the intersection numbers of a primitive group association scheme determine it up to combinatorial isomorphism. For $G=\operatorname{PSL}(2,q)$, where $q$ is an odd prime power with $q=11$ or $q\ge 17$, or $q=2^f$ with $f\ge3$, we construct a Schur partition that is algebraically isomorphic to the partition of $G$ into conjugacy classes but not combinatorially isomorphic to it. Consequently, the corresponding primitive group association schemes are not determined up to combinatorial isomorphism by their intersection numbers; in particular, they are non-separable.
For $\mathfrak A_6$ and $\mathfrak A_8$, we also explicitly construct Schur partitions that are algebraically isomorphic to the corresponding partitions into conjugacy classes but not combinatorially isomorphic to them.
Minkowski decomposability of symmetric edge polytopes
In this paper, we study the Minkowski decomposability of symmetric edge polytopes $P_G^\pm$ of a finite simple graph $G$ on vertex set $[n]$. More precisely, we give a complete characterization of graphs whose symmetric edge polytopes are Minkowski decomposable. We prove that $P_G^\pm$ is Minkowski decomposable if and only if $G$ is one of the three complete multipartite graphs: $K_n$, $K_{2,n-2}$, or $K_{1,1,n-2}$. In other words, if $G$ does not belong to these three families, then $P_G^\pm$ is Minkowski indecomposable.
A matroidal criterion for flow polytopes to be order polytopes
Flow polytopes of directed acyclic graphs form a central class of lattice polytopes in algebraic, geometric, and enumerative combinatorics. Order polytopes are one of the best understood families of lattice polytopes; their Ehrhart theory, triangulations, volumes, and face structures are closely controlled by the combinatorics of the underlying posets. Mészáros--Morales--Striker proved that the flow polytope of an $st$-planar directed acyclic graph is unimodularly equivalent to an order polytope. In this paper, we prove a converse after contracting idle edges. More precisely, for a directed acyclic graph $G$ with a unique source and a unique sink, let $\widetilde G$ be the graph obtained from $G$ by successively contracting idle edges until none remain. We prove that $\mathcal{F}(G)$ is unimodularly equivalent to an order polytope if and only if $\widetilde G$ is $st$-planar. In addition, under a local three-good-neighbor condition, we prove that for a directed acyclic graph with a unique source, a unique sink, and no idle edges, the graph is $st$-planar if and only if it avoids an explicit list of forbidden butterfly minors.
Characterization and chromatic number of triangle-free graphs with diameter 2
In this paper, we consider triangle-free graphs with diameter 2. If a triangle-free graph $G$ with diameter 2 is not isomorphic to a star, then the radius of $G$ is also 2, where such a graph is also called a $2$-self-centered graph. Shekarriz et al. [A characterization for 2-self-centered graphs, Discuss. Math. Graph Theory 38 (2018), 27--37.] gave a characterization of 2-self-centered graphs. However, there is a slight flaw in their characterization. Thus, in this paper, we modify it and prove an accurate characterization of those graphs. Furthermore, by using our characterization, we prove some results concerning the chromatic number of triangle-free graphs with diameter 2.
Indecomposability of 0/1-polytopes
We prove that every 0/1-polytope has a unique Minkowski decomposition into indecomposable polytopes, up to translation of summands. The summands lie in pairwise orthogonal subspaces. Thus, every 0/1-polytope is the Cartesian product of indecomposable 0/1-polytopes.
As applications, we obtain uniform combinatorial indecomposability criteria for order and chain polytopes, matroid polytopes, stable set and clique polytopes, edge polytopes, flow polytopes, and 2-level/compressed polytopes. We also show that every nontrivial factorization of a multi-affine polynomial is a product of multi-affine polynomials in disjoint sets of variables.
Polyptych lattices and marked chain-order polytopes
The theory of polyptych lattices is a framework to obtain a family of toric degenerations whose polytopes are related by piecewise-linear transformations. It can be regarded as a generalization of toric degenerations arising from cluster algebras. In this paper, we study polyptych lattices consisting of transfer maps for marked chain-order polytopes, and obtain a family of toric degenerations of a projective variety to marked chain-order polytopes for the Gelfand-Tsetlin poset. We also compute the Cox ring of this projective variety.
Imprimitive association schemes and elimination theory
We prove that a commutative association scheme is imprimitive if and only if it admits a multivariate $P$- or $Q$-polynomial structure with respect to an elimination-type monomial order. This provides a direct bridge between the classical theory of block and quotient schemes for imprimitive association schemes and elimination theory in computational commutative algebra. For an imprimitive multivariate $P$- or $Q$-polynomial association scheme, we determine the induced multivariate polynomial structures on the quotient and block schemes and describe their associated polynomials via explicit specializations, variable deletions, and rescalings of the original associated polynomials. At the level of zero-dimensional ideals, we show that the ideal of the block scheme is exactly an elimination ideal, whereas the ideal of the quotient scheme is obtained by adjoining the valency relations for the eliminated variables and then eliminating. As applications, we study direct products and crested products from the viewpoint of multivariate polynomiality, and we characterize the schemes that are multivariate $P$- or $Q$-polynomial with respect to every monomial order as precisely the direct products of univariate $P$- or $Q$-polynomial schemes. We also discuss formal duality, composition series, and several related open problems.
On the $h$-polynomials of cyclotomic standard graded commutative algebras
We call a standard graded commutative $\Bbbk$-algebra cyclotomic if its $h$-polynomial has all its roots on the unit circle in the complex plane. Complete intersections provide typical examples of cyclotomic algebras, since the $h$-polynomial of any standard graded complete intersection is a product of polynomials of the form $1 + t + \cdots + t^{m-1}$. We refer to such polynomials as being of type CI. A natural question is whether there exists a cyclotomic standard graded $\Bbbk$-algebra whose $h$-polynomial is not of type CI. In this paper, we give a partial answer to this question. We show that the $h$-polynomial $h_R(t)$ of a cyclotomic standard graded $\Bbbk$-algebra $R$ is of type CI whenever $h_R(1) \in \{1, 4, 6\}$ or $h_R(1)$ is prime. On the other hand, if $n \ge 8$ and $n$ is not prime, then there exists a cyclotomic standard graded $\Bbbk$-algebra $R$ whose $h$-polynomial $h_R(t)$ is not of type CI and satisfies $h_R(1) = n$.
Characteristic quasi-polynomials of deletions of Shi arrangements of type C and type D
Characteristic quasi-polynomials enumerate the number of points in the complement of hyperplane arrangements modulo positive integers. In this paper, we compute the characteristic quasi-polynomials of the restrictions of the Shi arrangements of type C and type D by one given hyperplane, respectively. The case of type C is established by extending the method developed in our previous work on type B (\cite{HN2024}), while the case of type D is deduced through a direct connection with the results on type B. As a corollary, we determine whether period collapse occurs in the characteristic quasi-polynomials of the deletions of the Shi arrangements of type C and type D.
Fans and polytopes in tilting theory III: Classification of convex $g$-fans of rank 3
The $g$-fan $Σ(A)$ of a finite dimensional algebra $A$ is a non-singular fan in its real Grothendieck group, defined by tilting theory. If the union ${\rm P}(A)$ of the simplices associated with the cones of $Σ(A)$ is convex, we call $A$ $g$-convex. In this case, the $g$-polytope ${\rm P}(A)$ of $A$ is a reflexive polytope. Thus, in each dimension, there are only finitely many isomorphism classes of fans that can be realized as $g$-fans of $g$-convex algebras. An important problem is to classify such fans for a fixed dimension $d$. In this paper, we give a complete answer for the case $d=3$: we prove that there are precisely 61 convex $g$-fans of dimension 3 up to isomorphism. Our method is based on the decomposition of fans into the $2^3$ orthants in the real Grothendieck group of $A$, together with a detailed analysis of possible sequences of $g$-vectors arising from iterated mutations.
Order polytopes of graded posets are gamma-effective
Order polytopes of posets have been a very rich topic at the crossroads between combinatorics and discrete geometry since their definition by Stanley in 1986. Among other notable results, order polytopes of graded posets are known to be $γ$-nonnegative by work of Brändén, who introduced the concept of sign-graded poset in the process.
In the present paper we are interested in proving an equivariant version of Brändén's result, using the tools of equivariant Ehrhart theory (introduced by Stapledon in 2011). Namely, we prove that order polytopes of graded posets are always $γ$-effective, i.e., that the $γ$-polynomial associated with the equivariant $h^*$-polynomial of the order polytope of any graded poset has coefficients consisting of actual characters. To reach this goal, we develop a theory of order polytopes of sign-graded posets, and find a formula to express the numerator of the equivariant Ehrhart series of such an object in terms of the saturations (à la Brändén) of the given sign-graded poset.
New kinds of block diagonal matching fields and toric degenerations of Grassmannians
Block diagonal matching field has many previous works. In general, a coherent matching field induces a monomial order to Plücker algebra, and block diagonal matching fields are a kind of coherent matching fields. In the present paper, we introduce a new kind of block diagonal matching fields and study the problem when they give a SAGBI basis. As a corollary, we provide a new family of toric degenerations of Grassmannians by using SAGBI bases.
Khovanskii bases of subalgebras arising from finite distributive lattices
The notion of Khovanskii bases was introduced by Kaveh and Manon. It is a generalization of the notion of SAGBI bases for a subalgebra of polynomials. The notion of SAGBI bases was introduced by Robbiano and Sweedler as an analogue of Gröbner bases in the context of subalgebras. A Hibi ideal is an ideal of a polynomial ring that arises from a distributive lattice. For the development of an analogy of the theory of Hibi ideals and Gröbner bases within the framework of subalgebras, in this paper, we investigate when the set of the polynomials associated with a distributive lattice forms a Khovanskii basis of the subalgebras it generates. We characterize such distributive lattices and their underlying posets. In particular, generalized snake posets and $\{(2+2),(1+1+1)\}$-free posets appear as the characterization.
Combinatorics of graded module categories over skew polynomial algebras at roots of unity
We introduce an operation on skew-symmetric matrices over $\mathbb{Z}/\ell\mathbb{Z}$ called switching, and also define a class of skew-symmetric matrices over $\mathbb{Z}/\ell\mathbb{Z}$ referred to as modular Eulerian matrices. We then show that these are closely related to the graded module categories over skew polynomial algebras at $\ell$-th roots of unity. As an application, we study the point simplicial complexes of skew polynomial algebras at cube roots of unity.
Characteristic quasi-polynomials of deletions of Shi arrangements of type B and their period collapse
Characteristic quasi-polynomials are the enumerative functions counting the number of elements in the complement of hyperplane arrangements modulo positive integers. A notable phenomenon in this context is period collapse, where the quasi-polynomial reduces to a polynomial or has a smaller period than the lcm period. In this paper, we compute the characteristic quasi-polynomials of the restriction of the Shi arrangement of type B by one given hyperplane. As a corollary, we completely determine whether period collapse occurs in the characteristic quasi-polynomial of the deletion of the Shi arrangement of type B. This implies the solution for the conjecture posed by Higashitani, Tran and Yoshinaga in this case.
On the Ehrhart Theory of Generalized Symmetric Edge Polytopes
The symmetric edge polytope (SEP) of a (finite, undirected) graph is a centrally symmetric lattice polytope whose vertices are defined by the edges of the graph. SEPs have been studied extensively in the past twenty years. Recently, Tóthmérész and, independently, D'Alí, Juhnke-Kubitzke, and Koch generalized the definition of an SEP to regular matroids, which are the matroids that can be represented by totally unimodular matrices. Generalized SEPs are known to have symmetric Ehrhart $h^*$-polynomials, and Ohsugi and Tsuchiya conjectured that (ordinary) SEPs have nonnegative $γ$-vectors.
In this article, we use combinatorial and Gröbner basis techniques to extend additional known properties of SEPs to generalized SEPs. Along the way, we show that generalized SEPs are not necessarily $γ$-nonnegative by providing explicit examples. We prove that the polytopes we construct are ``nearly'' $γ$-nonnegative in the sense that, by deleting exactly two elements from the matroid, one obtains SEPs for graphs that are $γ$-nonnegative. This provides further evidence that Ohsugi and Tsuchiya's conjecture holds in the ordinary case.
$h$-vectors of edge rings of odd-cycle compositions
Let $\mathbb{K}[G]$ be the edge ring of a finite simple graph $G$. Investigating properties of the $h$-vector of $\mathbb{K}[G]$ is of great interest in combinatorial commutative algebra. However, there are few families of graphs for which the $h$-vector has been explicitly determined. In this paper, we compute the $h$-vectors of a certain family of graphs that satisfy the odd-cycle condition, generalizing a result of the second and third named authors. As a corollary, we obtain a characterization of the graphs in this family whose edge rings are almost Gorenstein.
Newton-Okounkov polytopes of type $A$ flag varieties of small ranks arising from cluster structures
A flag variety is a smooth projective homogeneous variety. In this paper, we study Newton-Okounkov polytopes of the flag variety $Fl(\mathbb{C}^4)$ arising from its cluster structure. More precisely, we present defining inequalities of such Newton-Okounkov polytopes of $Fl(\mathbb{C}^4)$. Moreover, we classify these polytopes, establishing their equivalence under unimodular transformations.
Examples and counterexamples in Ehrhart theory
This article provides a comprehensive exposition about inequalities that the coefficients of Ehrhart polynomials and $h^*$-polynomials satisfy under various assumptions. We pay particular attention to the properties of Ehrhart positivity as well as unimodality, log-concavity and real-rootedness for $h^*$-polynomials.
We survey inequalities that arise when the polytope has different normality properties. We include statements previously unknown in the Ehrhart theory setting, as well as some original contributions in this topic. We address numerous variations of the conjecture asserting that IDP polytopes have a unimodal $h^*$-polynomial, and construct concrete examples that show that these variations of the conjecture are false. Explicit emphasis is put on polytopes arising within algebraic combinatorics.
Furthermore, we describe and construct polytopes having pathological properties on their Ehrhart coefficients and roots, and we indicate for the first time a connection between the notions of Ehrhart positivity and $h^*$-real-rootedness. We investigate the log-concavity of the sequence of evaluations of an Ehrhart polynomial at the non-negative integers. We conjecture that IDP polytopes have a log-concave Ehrhart series. Many additional problems and challenges are proposed.
Ehrhart quasi-polynomials and parallel translations
Given a rational polytope $P \subset \mathbb R^d$, the numerical function counting lattice points in the integral dilations of $P$ is known to become a quasi-polynomial, called the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial $\mathrm{ehr}_P$ of $P$. In this paper we study the following problem: Given a rational $d$-polytope $P \subset \mathbb R^d$, is there a nice way to know Ehrhart quasi-polynomials of translated polytopes $P+ \mathbf v$ for all $\mathbf v \in \mathbb Q^d$? We provide a way to compute such Ehrhart quasi-polynomials using a certain toric arrangement and lattice point counting functions of translated cones of $P$. This method allows us to visualize how constituent polynomials of $\mathrm{ehr}_{P+\mathbf v}$ change in the torus $\mathbb R^d/\mathbb Z^d$. We also prove that information of $\mathrm{ehr}_{P+\mathbf v}$ for all $\mathbf v \in \mathbb Q^d$ determines the rational $d$-polytope $P \subset \mathbb R^d$ up to translations by integer vectors, and characterize all rational $d$-polytopes $P \subset \mathbb R^d$ such that $\mathrm{ehr}_{P+\mathbf v}$ is symmetric for all $\mathbf v \in \mathbb Q^d$.
