Half-open integer parallelepipeds and polytope Dedekind sums
We study the Ehrhart theory of half-open $d$-dimensional integer parallelepipeds $Π$. Although the lattice-point count $tΠ\cap \Z^d$ is known to be simply $\vol Πt^d$ for positive integer $t$, the corresponding counting function for arbitrary real dilations $t$ has subtle, nontrivial periodic structure. We give explicit formulas for this real Ehrhart quasi-polynomial, and more generally for all the discrete moments of the real dilates of $Π$: $\sum_{p\in tΠ\cap\mathbb Z^d}\langle p,z\rangle^m$. The formulas are expressed in terms of Barnes polynomials and polytope Dedekind sums, which encode the periodic lattice flow of translated integer lattices on the flat torus determined by $Π$. Our approach develops further the study of polytope Dedekind sums, introduced recently in \cite{Robins2026}. In particular, we obtain novel identities for polytope Dedekind sums by using iterated discrete derivatives. Moreover, we show that the Ehrhart quasi-coefficients of $L_Π(t)$ are precisely alternating sums of polytope Dedekind sums. Finally, we give an Ehrhart-type reciprocity law relating $L_Π(t)$ at negative arguments to the lattice-point count of the `opposite' half-open parallelepiped.

Ehrhart quasi-polynomials of rational polytopes by real dilations
This paper is to study the Ehrhart function $L(P,t)$ of a rational $n$-polytope $P$, defined as the number of lattice points of dilated polytopes $tP$ with real numbers $t\geq 0$. It turns out that $L(P,t)$ is a quasi-polynomial of real variable $t$ in the sense that \[ L(P,t)=\sum_{k=0}^{n} c_k(P,t)t^k, \quad t\geq 0, \] where $c_k(P,t)$ are periodic piecewise polynomials of degree $n-k$ if ${\rm aff}\,P$ contains the origin, and are periodic functions vanishing almost everywhere otherwise. When $P$ is a rational simplex $σ$, the coefficient functions $c_k(σ,t)$ are given explicitly in terms of vertex information of the simplex $σ$. Moreover, the reciprocity law still holds.
Periods of Ehrhart coefficients of rational polytopes

Let $\mathcal{P} \subseteq \mathbb{R}^{n}$ be a polytope whose vertices have rational coordinates. By a seminal result of E. Ehrhart, the number of integer lattice points in the $k$th dilate of $\mathcal{P}$ ($k$ a positive integer) is a quasi-polynomial function of $k$ -- that is, a "polynomial" in which the coefficients are themselves periodic functions of $k$. It is an open problem to determine which quasi-polynomials are the Ehrhart quasi-polynomials of rational polytopes. As partial progress on this problem, we construct families of polytopes in which the periods of the coefficient functions take on various prescribed values.

Ehrhart quasi-polynomials via Barnes polynomials and discrete moments of parallelepipeds
We give novel and explicit formulas for the Ehrhart quasi-polynomials of rational simple polytopes, in terms of Barnes polynomials and discrete moments of half-open parallelepipeds. These formulas also hold for all positive dilations of a rational polytope. There is an interesting appearance of an extra complex z-parameter, which seems to allow for more compact formulations. We also give similar formulas for discrete moments of rational polytopes, and their positive dilates, objects known in the literature as sums of polynomials over a polytope. The appearance of the Barnes polynomials and the Barnes numbers allow for explicit computations. From this work, it is clear that the complexity of computing Ehrhart quasi-polynomials lies mainly in the computation of various discrete moments of parallelepipeds. These discrete moments are in general summed over a particular lattice flow on a compact torus, defined in this paper. Some of the consequences involve novel vanishing identities for rational polytopes. As another consequence, we obtain a differential equation for discrete moments of rational polytopes, which extends the work of Eva Linke. For smooth polytopes, we obtain novel and much simpler formulations of Ehrhart polynomials, discrete moments, and vanishing identities that may be of independent interest from the perspective of Barnes polynomials and Barnes numbers. These formulations show the utility of Barnes polynomials in geometric combinatorics, due to their very rich structure that extends the 1-dimensional Bernoulli polynomials.

The characteristic quasi-polynomials of hyperplane arrangements with actions of finite groups
In this paper, we introduce an equivariant version of the characteristic quasi-polynomials as the permutation characters on the complement of mod $q$ hyperplane arrangements. We prove that the permutation character is a quasi-polynomial in $q$, and show that it can be expressed by the sum of the induced characters of an equivariant version of the Ehrhart quasi-polynomials. Furthermore, we consider the case of the Coxeter arrangements, and compute in detail for type $A_\ell$.
Classification and Ehrhart Theory of Denominator 2 Polygons
We present an algorithm for growing the denominator $r$ polygons containing a fixed number of lattice points and enumerate such polygons containing few lattice points for small $r$. We describe the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial of a rational polygon in terms of boundary and interior point counts. Using this, we bound the coefficients of Ehrhart quasi-polynomials of denominator 2 polygons. In particular, we completely classify such polynomials in the case of zero interior points.

A degenerate version of Brion's formula
Let $\mathfrak{p} \subset V$ be a polytope and $ξ\in V_{\mathbb{C}}^*$. We obtain an expression for $I(\mathfrak{p}; α) := \int_{\mathfrak{p}} e^{\langle α, x \rangle} dx$ as a sum of meromorphic functions in $α\in V^*_{\mathbb{C}}$ parametrized by the faces $\mathfrak{f}$ of $\mathfrak{p}$ on which $\langle ξ, x \rangle$ is constant. Each term only depends on the local geometry of $\mathfrak{p}$ near $\mathfrak{f}$ (and on $ξ$) and is holomorphic at $α= ξ$. When $\langle ξ, \cdot \rangle$ is only constant on the vertices of $\mathfrak{p}$ our formula reduces to Brion's formula. Suppose $\mathfrak{p}$ is a rational polytope with respect to a lattice $Λ$. We obtain an expression for $S(\mathfrak{p}; α) := \sum_{λ\in \mathfrak{p} \cap Λ} e^{\langle α, λ\rangle}$ as a sum of meromorphic functions parametrized by the faces $\mathfrak{f}$ on which $e^{\langle ξ, x \rangle} = 1$ on a finite index sublattice of $\text{lin}(\mathfrak{f}) \cap Λ$. Each term only depends on the local geometry of $\mathfrak{p}$ near $\mathfrak{f}$ (and on $ξ$ and $Λ$) and is holomorphic at $α= ξ$. When $e^{\langle ξ, \cdot \rangle} \neq 1$ at any non-zero lattice point on a line through the origin parallel to an edge of $\mathfrak{p}$, our formula reduces to Brion's formula, and when $ξ= 0$, it reduces to the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial. Our formulas are particularly useful for understanding how $I(\mathfrak{p}(h); ξ)$ and $S(\mathfrak{p}(h); ξ)$ vary in a family of polytopes $\mathfrak{p}(h)$ with the same normal fan. When considering dilates of a fixed polytope, our formulas may be viewed as polytopal analogues of Laplace's method and the method of stationary phase. Such expressions naturally show up in analysis on symmetric spaces and affine buildings.

The quasi-polynomiality of mod q permutation representation for a linear finite group action on a lattice
For given linear action of a finite group on a lattice and a positive integer q, we prove that the mod q permutation representation is a quasi-polynomial in q. Additionally, we establish several results that can be considered as mod q-analogues of results by Stapledon for equivariant Ehrhart quasi-polynomials. We also prove a reciprocity-type result for multiplicities of irreducible decompositions.

Worpitzky-compatible sets and the freeness of arrangements between Shi and Catalan
Given an irreducible root system, the Worpitzky-compatible subsets are defined by a geometric property of the alcoves inside the fundamental parallelepiped of the root system. This concept is motivated and mainly understood through a lattice point counting formula concerning the characteristic and Ehrhart quasi-polynomials. In this paper, we show that the Worpitzky-compatibility has a simple combinatorial characterization in terms of roots. As a byproduct, we obtain a complete characterization by means of Worpitzky-compatibility for the freeness of the arrangements interpolating between the extended Shi and Catalan arrangements. This is a completion of the earlier result by Yoshinaga in 2010 which was done for simply-laced root systems.
Sums of Weighted Lattice Points of Polytopes
We study the problem of counting lattice points of a polytope that are weighted by an Ehrhart quasi-polynomial of a family of parametric polytopes. As applications one can compute integrals and maximum values of such quasi-polynomials, as well as obtain new identities in representation theory. These topics have been of great interest to Michèle Vergne since the late 1980's. Our new contribution is a result that transforms weighted sums into unweighted sums, even when the weights are very general quasipolynomials. In some cases it leads to faster integration over a polytope. We can create new algebraic identities and conjectures in algebraic combinatorics and number theory.

The Barnes-Hurwitz zeta cocycle at $s=0$ and Ehrhart quasi-polynomials of triangles
Following a theorem of David R. Hayes, we give a geometric interpretation of the special value at $s=0$ of certain $1$-cocycle on $\mathrm{PGL}_2(\mathbb{Q})$ previously introduced by the author. This work yields three main results: an explicit formula for our cocycle at $s=0$, a generalization and a new proof of Hayes' theorem, and an elegant summation formula for the $0$th coefficient of the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial of certain triangles in $\mathbb{R}^2$.
Ehrhart quasi-polynomials and parallel translations
Given a rational polytope $P \subset \mathbb R^d$, the numerical function counting lattice points in the integral dilations of $P$ is known to become a quasi-polynomial, called the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial $\mathrm{ehr}_P$ of $P$. In this paper we study the following problem: Given a rational $d$-polytope $P \subset \mathbb R^d$, is there a nice way to know Ehrhart quasi-polynomials of translated polytopes $P+ \mathbf v$ for all $\mathbf v \in \mathbb Q^d$? We provide a way to compute such Ehrhart quasi-polynomials using a certain toric arrangement and lattice point counting functions of translated cones of $P$. This method allows us to visualize how constituent polynomials of $\mathrm{ehr}_{P+\mathbf v}$ change in the torus $\mathbb R^d/\mathbb Z^d$. We also prove that information of $\mathrm{ehr}_{P+\mathbf v}$ for all $\mathbf v \in \mathbb Q^d$ determines the rational $d$-polytope $P \subset \mathbb R^d$ up to translations by integer vectors, and characterize all rational $d$-polytopes $P \subset \mathbb R^d$ such that $\mathrm{ehr}_{P+\mathbf v}$ is symmetric for all $\mathbf v \in \mathbb Q^d$.
Chainlink Polytopes and Ehrhart-Equivalence
Published in Annals of Combinatorics (2024), Vol 28, pp 1141-1166 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a class of polytopes that we call chainlink polytopes and which allow us to construct infinite families of pairs of non isomorphic rational polytopes with the same Ehrhart quasi-polynomial. Our construction is based on circular fence posets, which admit a non-obvious and non-trivial symmetry in their rank sequences that turns out to be reflected in the polytope level. We introduce the related class of chainlink posets and show that they exhibit the same symmetry properties. We further prove an outstanding conjecture on the unimodality of circular rank polynomials.

Piecewise-linear promotion and RSK in rectangles and moon polyominoes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study piecewise-linear and birational lifts of Schützenberger promotion, evacuation, and the RSK correspondence defined in terms of toggles. Using this perspective, we prove that certain chain statistics in rectangles shift predictably under the action of these maps. We then use this to construct piecewise-linear and birational versions of Rubey's bijections between fillings of equivalent moon polyominoes that preserve these chain statistics, and we show that these maps form a commuting diagram. We also discuss how these results imply Ehrhart equivalence and Ehrhart quasi-polynomial period collapse of certain analogues of chain polytopes for moon polyominoes.

Restricted Birkhoff polytopes and Ehrhart period collapse
Published in Discrete & Computational Geometry, 2024 • View PublicationBIB
We show that the polytopes obtained from the Birkhoff polytope by imposing additional inequalities restricting the "longest increasing subsequence" have Ehrhart quasi-polynomials which are honest polynomials, even though they are just rational polytopes in general. We do this by defining a continuous, piecewise-linear bijection to a certain Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope. This bijection is not an integral equivalence but it respects lattice points in the appropriate way to imply that the two polytopes have the same Ehrhart (quasi-)polynomials. In fact, the bijection is essentially the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence.

Ehrhart quasi-polynomials of almost integral polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
A lattice polytope translated by a rational vector is called an almost integral polytope. In this paper we investigate Ehrhart quasi-polynomials of almost integral polytopes. We study the relationship between the shape of the polytopes and algebraic properties of the Ehrhart quasi-polynomials. In particular, we prove that lattice zonotopes and centrally symmetric lattice polytopes are characterized by Ehrhart quasi-polynomials of their rational translations.
Period collapse in characteristic quasi-polynomials of hyperplane arrangements
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given an integral hyperplane arrangement, Kamiya-Takemura-Terao (2008 & 2011) introduced the notion of characteristic quasi-polynomial, which enumerates the cardinality of the complement of the arrangement modulo a positive integer. The most popular candidate for period of the characteristic quasi-polynomials is the lcm period. In this paper, we initiate a study of period collapse in characteristic quasi-polynomials stemming from the concept of period collapse in the theory of Ehrhart quasi-polynomials. We say that period collapse occurs in a characteristic quasi-polynomial when the minimum period is strictly less than the lcm period. Our first main result is that in the non-central case, with regard to period collapse anything is possible: period collapse occurs in any dimension $\ge 1$, occurs for any value of the lcm period $\ge 2$, and the minimum period when it is not the lcm period can be any proper divisor of the lcm period. Our second main result states that in the central case, however, no period collapse is possible in any dimension, that is, the lcm period is always the minimum period.
On the period collapse of a family of Ehrhart quasi-polynomials
A graph whose nodes have degree 1 or 3 is called a $\{1,3\}$-graph. Liu and Osserman associated a polytope to each $\{1,3\}$-graph and studied the Ehrhart quasi-polynomials of these polytopes. They showed that the vertices of these polytopes have coordinates in the set $\{0,\frac14,\frac12,1\}$, which implies that the period of their Ehrhart quasi-polynomials is either 1, 2, or 4. We show that the period of the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial of these polytopes is at most 2 if the graph is a tree or a cubic graph, and it is equal to 4 otherwise. In the process of proving this theorem, several interesting combinatorial and geometric properties of these polytopes were uncovered, arising from the structure of their associated graphs. The tools developed here may find other applications in the study of Ehrhart quasi-polynomials and enumeration problems for other polytopes that arise from graphs. Additionally, we have identified some interesting connections with triangulations of 3-manifolds.

Stretched Newell-Littlewood coefficients
Published • View PublicationBIB
Newell-Littlewood coefficients $n_{μ,ν}^λ$ are the multiplicities occurring in the decomposition of products of universal characters of the orthogonal and symplectic groups. They may also be expressed, or even defined directly in terms of Littlewood-Richardson coefficients, $c_{μ,ν}^λ$. Both sets of coefficients have stretched forms $c_{tμ,tν}^{tλ}$ and $n_{tμ,tν}^{tλ}$, where $tκ$ is the partition obtained by multiplying each part of the partition $κ$ by the integer $t$. It is known that $c_{tμ,tν}^{tλ}$ is a polynomial in $t$ and here it is shown that $n_{tμ,tν}^{tλ}$ is an Ehrhart quasi-polynomial in $t$ with minimum quasi-period at most $2$. The evaluation of $n_{tμ,tν}^{tλ}$ is effected both by deriving their generating function and by establishing a hive model analogous to that used for the calculation of $c_{tμ,tν}^{tλ}$. These two approaches lead to a whole battery of conjectures about the nature of the quasi-polynomials $n_{tμ,tν}^{tλ}$. These include both positivity, stability and saturation conjectures that are supported by a significant amount of data from a range of examples.

Postnikov-Stanley Linial arrangement conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
A characteristic polynomial is an important invariant in the field of hyperplane arrangement. For the Linial arrangement of any irreducible root system, Postnikov and Stanley conjectured that all roots of the characteristic polynomial have the same real part. In relation to this conjecture, Yoshinaga obtained an explicit relationship between the characteristic quasi-polynomial and the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial for the fundamental alcove. In this paper, we calculate Yoshinaga's explicit formula through the decomposition of the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial into several quasi-polynomials and a modified shift operator, and obtain new formulas for the characteristic quasi-polynomial of the Linial arrangement. In particular, when the parameter of the Linial arrangement is relatively prime to the period of the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial, we prove the Postnikov-Stanley Linial arrangement conjecture. This generalizes some of the results for the root systems of classical types that have been proved by Postnikov-Stanley and Athanasiadis. For other cases, we verify this conjecture for exceptional root systems using a computational approach.
