An axiomatic framework from splitting and merging in MAT-labeled graphs, vines, and single-peaked domains
In recent work (Forum Math.~Sigma, 2024), we established a correspondence between MAT-labeled graphs arising from hyperplane arrangements and regular vines from probability theory. In this paper, we extend this connection to Arrow's single-peaked domains in social choice theory. We show that MAT-labeled complete graphs, regular vines, and maximal Arrow's single-peaked domains arise from the same recursive combinatorial structure.
Our main result gives an axiomatic characterization of these objects using the language of combinatorial species. At the heart of this characterization are two fundamental operations, called splitting and merging, together with natural compatibility conditions that uniquely determine the structures. As consequences, we obtain explicit correspondences between maximal Arrow's single-peaked domains, MAT-labeled complete graphs, and regular vines, resolving an open problem in the economics literature concerning the combinatorial characterization of single-peaked domains.
We further show, by a direct proof, that regular vines are equivalent to $(n,3)$-extremal lattices from formal concept analysis. Consequently, these extremal lattices also fit naturally into the same splitting and merging framework, providing another example from a different area that satisfies our axiomatic characterization.
Signatures of Type $A$ Root Systems
Given a type $A$ root system $Φ$ of rank $n$, we introduce the concept of a signature for each subset $S$ of $Φ$ consisting of $n+1$ positive roots. For a subset $S$ represented by a tuple $(β_1, \ldots, β_{n+1})$, the signature of $S$ is defined as an unordered pair $\{a, b\}$, where $a$ and $b$ denote the numbers of $1$s and $-1$s, respectively, among the cofactors $(-1)^k \det(S \setminus \{β_k\})$ for $1 \le k \le n+1$. We prove that the number of tuples with a given signature can be expressed in terms of classical Eulerian numbers. The study of these signatures is motivated by their connections to the arithmetic and combinatorial properties of cones over deformed arrangements defined by $Φ$, including the Shi, Catalan, Linial, and Ish arrangements. We apply our main result to compute two important invariants of these arrangements: The minimum period of the characteristic quasi-polynomial, and the evaluation of the classical and arithmetic Tutte polynomials at $(1, 1)$.
Worpitzky-compatible sets and the freeness of arrangements between Shi and Catalan
Given an irreducible root system, the Worpitzky-compatible subsets are defined by a geometric property of the alcoves inside the fundamental parallelepiped of the root system. This concept is motivated and mainly understood through a lattice point counting formula concerning the characteristic and Ehrhart quasi-polynomials. In this paper, we show that the Worpitzky-compatibility has a simple combinatorial characterization in terms of roots. As a byproduct, we obtain a complete characterization by means of Worpitzky-compatibility for the freeness of the arrangements interpolating between the extended Shi and Catalan arrangements. This is a completion of the earlier result by Yoshinaga in 2010 which was done for simply-laced root systems.

The present paper explores a connection between two concepts arising from different fields of mathematics. The first concept, called vine, is a graphical model for dependent random variables. This concept first appeared in a work of Joe (1994), and the formal definition was given later by Cooke (1997). Vines have nowadays become an active research area whose applications can be found in probability theory and uncertainty analysis. The second concept, called MAT-freeness, is a combinatorial property in the theory of freeness of logarithmic derivation modules of hyperplane arrangements. This concept was first studied by Abe-Barakat-Cuntz-Hoge-Terao (2016), and soon afterwards investigated further by Cuntz-M{ü}cksch (2020).
In the particular case of graphic arrangements, the last two authors (2023) recently proved that the MAT-freeness is completely characterized by the existence of certain edge-labeled graphs, called MAT-labeled graphs. In this paper, we first introduce a poset characterization of a vine, the so-called vine. Then we show that, interestingly, there exists an explicit equivalence between the categories of locally regular vines and MAT-labeled graphs. In particular, we obtain an equivalence between the categories of regular vines and MAT-labeled complete graphs.
Several applications will be mentioned to illustrate the interaction between the two concepts. Notably, we give an affirmative answer to a question of Cuntz-M{ü}cksch that MAT-freeness can be characterized by a generalization of the root poset in the case of graphic arrangements.
A type $B$ analog of Ish arrangement
The Shi arrangement due to Shi (1986) and the Ish arrangement due to Armstrong (2013) are deformations of the type $A$ Coxeter arrangement that share many common properties. Motivated by a question of Armstrong and Rhoades since 2012 to seek for Ish arrangements of other types, in this paper we introduce an Ish arrangement of type $B$. We study this Ish arrangement through various aspects similar to as known in type $A$ with a main emphasis on freeness and supersolvability. Our method is based on the concept of $ψ$-digraphic arrangements recently introduced due to Abe and the authors with a type $B$ extension.

We call a poset factorable if its characteristic polynomial has all positive integer roots. Inspired by inductive and divisional freeness of a central hyperplane arrangement, we introduce and study the notion of inductive posets and their superclass of divisional posets. It then motivates us to define the so-called inductive and divisional abelian (Lie group) arrangements, whose posets of layers serve as the main examples of our posets. Our first main result is that every divisional poset is factorable. Our second main result shows that the class of inductive posets contains strictly supersolvable posets, the notion recently introduced due to Bibby and Delucchi (2022). This result can be regarded as an extension of a classical result due to Jambu and Terao (1984), which asserts that every supersolvable hyperplane arrangement is inductively free. Our third main result is an application to toric arrangements, which states that the toric arrangement defined by an arbitrary ideal of a root system of type $A$, $B$ or $C$ with respect to the root lattice is inductive.
Flag-accurate arrangements
In [MR21], the first two authors introduced the notion of an accurate arrangement, a particular notion of freeness. In this paper, we consider a special subclass, where the property of accuracy stems from a flag of flats in the intersection lattice of the underlying arrangement. Members of this family are called flag-accurate. One relevance of this new notion is that it entails divisional freeness. There are a number of important natural classes which are flag-accurate, the most prominent one among them is the one consisting of Coxeter arrangements. This warrants a systematic study which is put forward in the present paper. More specifically, let $\mathscr A$ be a free arrangement of rank $\ell$. Suppose that for every $1\leq d \leq \ell$, the first $d$ exponents of $\mathscr A$ -- when listed in increasing order -- are realized as the exponents of a free restriction of $\mathscr A$ to some intersection of reflecting hyperplanes of $\mathscr A$ of dimension $d$. Following [MR21], we call such an arrangement $\mathscr A$ with this natural property accurate. If in addition the flats involved can be chosen to form a flag, we call $\mathscr A$ flag-accurate. We investigate flag-accuracy among reflection arrangements, extended Shi and extended Catalan arrangements, and further for various families of graphic and digraphic arrangements. We pursue these both from theoretical and computational perspectives. Along the way we present examples of accurate arrangements that are not flag-accurate. The main result of [MR21] shows that MAT-free arrangements are accurate. We provide strong evidence for the conjecture that MAT-freeness actually entails flag-accuracy.

Ideal subarrangements of a Weyl arrangement are proved to be free by the multiple addition theorem (MAT) due to Abe-Barakat-Cuntz-Hoge-Terao (2016). They form a significant class among Weyl subarrangements that are known to be free so far. The concept of MAT-free arrangements was introduced recently by Cuntz-M{ü}cksch (2020) to capture a core of the MAT, which enlarges the ideal subarrangements from the perspective of freeness. The aim of this paper is to give a precise characterization of the MAT-freeness in the case of type $A$ Weyl subarrangements (or graphic arrangements). It is known that the ideal and free graphic arrangements correspond to the unit interval and chordal graphs respectively. We prove that a graphic arrangement is MAT-free if and only if the underlying graph is strongly chordal. In particular, it affirmatively answers a question of Cuntz-M{ü}cksch that MAT-freeness is closed under taking localization in the case of graphic arrangements.

We introduce and study a digraph analogue of Stanley's $ψ$-graphical arrangements from the perspectives of combinatorics and freeness. Our arrangements form a common generalization of various classes of arrangements in literature including the Catalan arrangement, the Shi arrangement, the Ish arrangement, and especially the arrangements interpolating between Shi and Ish recently introduced by Duarte and Guedes de Oliveira. The arrangements between Shi and Ish all are proved to have the same characteristic polynomial with all integer roots, thus raising the natural question of their freeness. We define two operations on digraphs, which we shall call king and coking elimination operations and prove that subject to certain conditions on the weight $ψ$, the operations preserve the characteristic polynomials and freeness of the associated arrangements. As an application, we affirmatively prove that the arrangements between Shi and Ish all are free, and among them only the Ish arrangement has supersolvable cone.

Given an integral hyperplane arrangement, Kamiya-Takemura-Terao (2008 & 2011) introduced the notion of characteristic quasi-polynomial, which enumerates the cardinality of the complement of the arrangement modulo a positive integer. The most popular candidate for period of the characteristic quasi-polynomials is the lcm period. In this paper, we initiate a study of period collapse in characteristic quasi-polynomials stemming from the concept of period collapse in the theory of Ehrhart quasi-polynomials. We say that period collapse occurs in a characteristic quasi-polynomial when the minimum period is strictly less than the lcm period. Our first main result is that in the non-central case, with regard to period collapse anything is possible: period collapse occurs in any dimension $\ge 1$, occurs for any value of the lcm period $\ge 2$, and the minimum period when it is not the lcm period can be any proper divisor of the lcm period. Our second main result states that in the central case, however, no period collapse is possible in any dimension, that is, the lcm period is always the minimum period.

The class of Worpitzky-compatible subarrangements of a Weyl arrangement together with an associated Eulerian polynomial was recently introduced by Ashraf, Yoshinaga and the first author, which brings the characteristic and Ehrhart quasi-polynomials into one formula. The subarrangements of the braid arrangement, the Weyl arrangement of type $A$, are known as the graphic arrangements. We prove that the Worpitzky-compatible graphic arrangements are characterized by cocomparability graphs. Our main result yields new formulas for the chromatic and graphic Eulerian polynomials of cocomparability graphs.
Expectations of Tutte-related functions of random ranked sets with multiplicities

Employing two models, we show that various counting functions of a random variable defined by restriction or contraction of a ranked set with multiplicity (e.g., classical and arithmetic matroids) have expectations given by the corresponding multivariate Tutte polynomial. The first model is based on a generalization of a convolution formula of Kung (2010), extending from matroids to ranked sets with multiplicities. This model enables us to compute the expectations of many familiar polynomials, such as the chromatic, flow and Ehrhart polynomials, generalizing the classical results of Welsh (1996) on random graphs. The second model is designed to compute the expectations of invariants that are generally not evaluations of the polynomials mentioned above, such as the number of connected components of an intersection of hypersurfaces in an abelian Lie group arrangement, and the number of lattice points in a half-open zonotope. In particular, both models yield new probabilistic interpretations of the arithmetic Tutte polynomial and $G$-Tutte polynomial. A simple, but seems to be new convolution-like formula for the Ehrhart polynomials of lattice zonotopes will also be given.

Let $\mathcal{A}$ be a Weyl arrangement. We introduce and study the notion of $\mathcal{A}$-Eulerian polynomial producing an Eulerian-like polynomial for any subarrangement of $\mathcal{A}$. This polynomial together with shift operator describe how the characteristic quasi-polynomial of a new class of arrangements containing ideal subarrangements of $\mathcal{A}$ can be expressed in terms of the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial of the fundamental alcove. The method can also be extended to define two types of deformed Weyl subarrangements containing the families of the extended Shi, Catalan, Linial arrangements and to compute their characteristic quasi-polynomials. We obtain several known results in the literature as specializations, including the formula of the characteristic polynomial of $\mathcal{A}$ via Ehrhart theory due to Athanasiadis (1996), Blass-Sagan (1998), Suter (1998) and Kamiya-Takemura-Terao (2010); and the formula relating the number of coweight lattice points in the fundamental parallelepiped with the Lam-Postnikov Eulerian polynomial due to the third author.

Let $\mathcal{A}$ be a Weyl arrangement in an $\ell$-dimensional Euclidean space. The freeness of restrictions of $\mathcal{A}$ was first settled by a case-by-case method by Orlik and the second author (1993), and later by a uniform argument by Douglass (1999). Prior to this, Orlik and Solomon (1983) had completely determined the exponents of these arrangements by exhaustion. A classical result due to Orlik, Solomon and the second author (1986), asserts that the exponents of any $A_1$ restriction, i.e., the restriction of $\mathcal{A}$ to a hyperplane, are given by $\{m_1,\ldots, m_{\ell-1}\}$, where $\exp(\mathcal{A})=\{m_1,\ldots, m_{\ell}\}$ with $m_1 \le \cdots\le m_{\ell}$. As a next step towards conceptual understanding of the restriction exponents we will investigate the $A_1^2$ restrictions, i.e., the restrictions of $\mathcal{A}$ to the subspaces of type $A_1^2$. In this paper, we give a combinatorial description of the exponents and describe bases for the modules of derivations of the $A_1^2$ restrictions in terms of the classical notion of related roots by Kostant (1955).

The purpose of this paper is twofold. Firstly, we generalize the notion of characteristic polynomials of hyperplane and toric arrangements to those of certain abelian Lie group arrangements. Secondly, we give two interpretations for the chromatic quasi-polynomials and their constituents through subspace and toric viewpoints.

With a main tool is signed graphs, we give a full description of the characteristic quasi-polynomials of ideals of classical root systems ($ABCD$) with respect to the integer and root lattices. As a result, we obtain a full description of the characteristic polynomials of the toric arrangements defined by these ideals. As an application, we provide a combinatorial verification to the fact that the characteristic polynomial of every ideal subarrangement factors over the dual partition of the ideal in the classical cases.

Given a central integral arrangement, the reduction of the arrangement modulo positive integers $q$ gives rise to a subgroup arrangement in $(\mathbb{Z}/q\mathbb{Z})^\ell$. Kamiya-Takemura-Terao (2008) introduced the notion of characteristic quasi-polynomials, which uses to evaluate the cardinality of the complement of the subgroup arrangement. Chen-Wang (2012) found a similar but more general setting that replacing the integral arrangement by its restriction to a subspace of $\mathbb{R}^\ell$, and evaluating the cardinality of the $q$-reduction complement will also lead to a quasi-polynomial in $q$. On an independent study, Brändén-Moci (2014) defined the so-called chromatic quasi-polynomial, and initiated the study of $q$-colorings on a finite list of elements in a finitely generated abelian group. The main purpose of this paper is to verify that the Chen-Wang's quasi-polynomial and the Brändén-Moci's chromatic quasi-polynomial are equivalent in the sense that the quasi-polynomials enumerate the cardinalities of isomorphic sets.

We introduce and study the notion of the $G$-Tutte polynomial for a list $\mathcal{A}$ of elements in a finitely generated abelian group $Γ$ and an abelian group $G$, which is defined by counting the number of homomorphisms from associated finite abelian groups to $G$.
The $G$-Tutte polynomial is a common generalization of the (arithmetic) Tutte polynomial for realizable (arithmetic) matroids, the characteristic quasi-polynomial for integral arrangements, Brändén-Moci's arithmetic version of the partition function of an abelian group-valued Potts model, and the modified Tutte-Krushkal-Renhardy polynomial for a finite CW-complex.
As in the classical case, $G$-Tutte polynomials carry topological and enumerative information (e.g., the Euler characteristic, point counting and the Poincaré polynomial) of abelian Lie group arrangements.
We also discuss differences between the arithmetic Tutte and the $G$-Tutte polynomials related to the axioms for arithmetic matroids and the (non-)positivity of coefficients.
The largest coefficient of the highest root and the second smallest exponent

There are many different ways that the exponents of Weyl groups of irreducible root systems have been defined and put into practice. One of the most classical and algebraic definitions of the exponents is related to the eigenvalues of Coxeter elements. While the coefficients of the height root when expressed as a linear combination of simple roots are combinatorial objects in nature, there are several results asserting relations between these exponents and coefficients. This study was conducted to give a uniform and fairly elementary proof of the fact that the second smallest exponent of the Weyl group is one or two plus the largest coefficient of the highest root of the root system depending upon a simple condition on the root lengths. As a consequence, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for a root system to be of type $G_2$ in terms of these numbers.
