Cyclically Compatible Deformations of the Braid Arrangement
We prove a characteristic-polynomial shift formula for two-sided extensions of cyclically compatible deformations of the braid arrangement. For a nonnegative integer matrix $M=(m_{ij})$ with zero diagonal, let $\mathcal{A}_M$ be the arrangement \[ x_i-x_j=s,\qquad 1\le i<j\le n,\quad s\in[-m_{ij},m_{ji}]_{\mathbb{Z}}. \] Given $α,β\in\mathbb{N}^n$, define its two-sided extension $\mathcal{A}_M(α,β)$ by replacing this interval with \[ [-m_{ij}-α_i-β_j,\, m_{ji}+α_j+β_i]_{\mathbb{Z}}. \] Call $M$ cyclically compatible if all pairwise distinct $a,b,c$ with $1\le a,b,c\le n$ satisfy \[ m_{ac}\le m_{ab}+m_{bc}+1. \] Under this condition, for the reduced characteristic polynomial $\widetildeχ(\mathcal{A},t) =\dfrac{χ(\mathcal{A},t)}{t}$, we have \[ \widetildeχ(\mathcal{A}_M(α,β),t) = \widetildeχ(\mathcal{A}_M,t-|α|-|β|). \] The proof uses the finite-field method and a cyclic-gap enumeration formula. We also establish redistribution invariance, study weak-sum perturbations, and give applications to Shi, uniform interval, graphical, and Ferrers-type deformations.

Polytopal bases for barycentric subdivisions
Several important fans studied at the interface of combinatorics and algebraic geometry arise from barycentric subdivisions of other fans; the central example is the braid arrangement. The collection of faces of the standard simplex forms a basis for the deformation cone of the braid arrangement, i.e. the cone of generalized permutahedra. We reinterpret this simplicial basis as the collection of deep truncations of the standard simplex, and systematically abstract this perspective to produce polytopal bases for the deformation cones of barycentric subdivisions of simplicial projective fans. We further demonstrate that these bases restrict to bases for deformation cones of fans obtained by a sequence of stellar subdivisions induced by a building set. When the starting polytope is smooth with all edge lengths equal to 1, we show that we can upgrade our basis to a collection of flat truncations. We then investigate two extensions of the braid arrangement where we are able to further upgrade our flat truncation basis to an indecomposable polytopal basis: 1.the barycentric subdivision of the normal fan of a product of standard simplices and 2.the barycentric subdivision of the braid arrangement. We discuss connections to, and implications for, Archimedean solids and regular polytopes, permutahedral plates, root polytopes, permutoassociahedra, simple permutonestohedra, cosmohedra, omnitruncations of Coxeter permutahedra, bipermutahedra, $π$-colored fans, and tropical $α$ and $β$ classes.

Non-vanishing of homotopy groups of Manin--Schechtman arrangements
One of the central problems in the topology of hyperplane arrangements is determining whether the complement is a $K(π,1)$-space. In this paper, we study Manin--Schechtman arrangements, introduced as higher-dimensional analogs of the braid arrangement, and prove that their complements have non-vanishing higher homotopy groups. Consequently, these arrangements fail to be $K(π,1)$ in a broad range of cases.

Bijectivity of a generalized Pak-Stanley labeling
The Pak-Stanley labeling is a bijection between the regions of the $m$-Shi arrangement and the $m$-parking functions. Mazin generalized this labeling to every deformation of the braid arrangement and proved that this labeling is always surjective onto a set of directed multigraph parking functions. We provide a right inverse to the generalized Pak-Stanley labeling, and identify a class $\mathcal{C}$ of arrangements for which this labeling is bijective. The class $\mathcal{C}$ includes the multi-Shi arrangements and the multi-Catalan arrangements. We also show that the arrangements in $\mathcal{C}$ are the only transitive arrangements for which the generalized Pak-Stanley labeling is bijective.

The geometry of a counting formula for deformations of the braid arrangement
We consider real hyperplane arrangements whose hyperplanes are of the form $\{x_i - x_j = s\}$ for some integer $s$, which we call deformations of the braid arrangement. In 2018, Bernardi gave a counting formula for the number of regions of any deformation of the braid arrangement $\mathcal{A}$ as a signed sum over some decorated trees. He further showed that each of these decorated trees can be associated to a region $R$ of the arrangement $\mathcal{A}$, and hence we can consider the contribution of each region to the signed sum. Bernardi also implicitly showed that for transitive arrangements, the contribution of any region of the arrangement is $1$. We remove the transitivity condition, showing that for any deformation of the braid arrangement the contribution of a region to the signed sum is $1$. This provides an alternative proof of the original counting formula, and sheds light on the geometry underlying the formula. We further use this new geometric understanding to better understand the contribution of a tree.

Region level via centralization for hyperplane arrangements and beyond
In "Faces of a Hyperplane Arrangement Enumerated by Ideal Dimension, with Applications to Plane, Plaids, and Shi," Zaslavsky showed how to compute the number $r_\ell(\mathcal{A})$ of regions of a real hyperplane arrangement $\mathcal{A}$ with a given level, refining his well known enumeration of regions and relatively bounded regions. We restate this theorem in terms of a construction called the centralization of $\mathcal{A}$, give a bijective proof, and then apply it in two ways to answer questions concerning the concept of level. Firstly, a consequence of this enumeration is that $r_\ell(\mathcal{A})$ depends only on the intersection poset $\mathcal{L}(\mathcal{A})$, such that both $r_\ell$ and centralization can be defined in the more general setting of geometric semilattices. In this context we derive a very general expression for the characteristic polynomial of a geometric semilattice with several interesting corollaries. Secondly, recent investigations into the phenomenon of level have made little use of Zaslavsky's level-counting theorem, but it can be applied to obtain or generalize many of their results. In particular we show how exponential generating function identities (arXiv:2410.10198, arXiv:2411.02971) and an expression giving the characteristic polynomial in terms of $r_\ell$ (arXiv:2411.03756) can be derived for deformations of the braid arrangement.
Moduli Theory of the $r$-Braid Arrangement
We describe a family of hyperplane arrangements depending on a positive integer parameter $r$, which we refer to as the $r$-braid arrangements, and which can be viewed as a generalization of the classical braid arrangement. The wonderful compactification of the braid arrangement (with respect to its minimal building set) is well-known to yield the moduli space $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$, and, in this work, we generalize this result, constructing a moduli space $\overline{\mathcal{M}}^r_{n}$ of certain genus-zero curves with an order-$r$ involution that we identify with the corresponding wonderful compactification of the $r$-braid arrangement. The resulting space is a variant of the previously studied moduli space $\overline{\mathcal{L}}^r_n$ [arXiv:2104.06526], related via a change of weights on the markings.

Matroid complexes and Orlik-Solomon algebras
In this article we construct a combinatorial quasi-free differential graded model for the Orlik-Solomon algebra of supersolvable matroids, which generalizes in a matroidal setting the cdga of admissible graphs introduced by M. Kontsevich for the braid arrangements. Our construction draws on well-known concepts from matroid theory, including modularity, single-element extensions, and generalized parallel connections. We also show that this model carries a cooperadic structure in a suitably generalized sense. As an application, we use this model to give a new proof that the Orlik-Solomon algebras of supersolvable matroids are Koszul.

Interpreting the (signed) chromatic polynomial coefficients via hyperplane arrangements
A recent result of Lofano and Paolini expresses the characteristic polynomial of a real hyperplane arrangement in terms of a projection statistic on the regions of the arrangement. We use this result to give an alternative proof for Greene and Zaslavsky's interpretation for the coefficients of the chromatic polynomial of a graph and further generalize this interpretation to signed graphs. We also show that this projection statistic has a nice combinatorial interpretation in the case of the braid arrangement, which generalizes to graphical arrangements of natural unit interval graphs.

Separator-based derivations of graphic arrangements
The class of subarrangements of the well-studied braid arrangement, so-called graphic hyperplane arrangements, is important for analysing new concepts and properties in hyperplane arrangement theory. While there is a nice characterization of free graphic arrangements, many interesting questions beyond the free case remain open. This paper introduces an explicit set of generators for the module of logarithmic derivations of a general graphic arrangement based on graph separators. We obtain new insights in the derivation degree sequence in the non-free case and give bounds on the highest degree in the sequence. Moreover, this can broadly be used for future research in this area.

Depth-Bounds for Neural Networks via the Braid Arrangement
We contribute towards resolving the open question of how many hidden layers are required in ReLU networks for exactly representing all continuous and piecewise linear functions on $\mathbb{R}^d$. While the question has been resolved in special cases, the best known lower bound in general is still 2. We focus on neural networks that are compatible with certain polyhedral complexes, more precisely with the braid fan. For such neural networks, we prove a non-constant lower bound of $Ω(\log\log d)$ hidden layers required to exactly represent the maximum of $d$ numbers. Additionally, under our assumption, we provide a combinatorial proof that 3 hidden layers are necessary to compute the maximum of 5 numbers; this had only been verified with an excessive computation so far. Finally, we show that a natural generalization of the best known upper bound to maxout networks is not tight, by demonstrating that a rank-3 maxout layer followed by a rank-2 maxout layer is sufficient to represent the maximum of 7 numbers.
$q$-deformation of chromatic polynomials and graphical arrangements
We first observe a mysterious similarity between the braid arrangement and the arrangement of all hyperplanes in a vector space over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. These two arrangements are defined by the determinants of the Vandermonde and the Moore matrix, respectively. These two matrices are transformed to each other by replacing a natural number $n$ with $q^n$ ($q$-deformation). In this paper, we introduce the notion of ``$q$-deformation of graphical arrangements'' as certain subarrangements of the arrangement of all hyperplanes over $\mathbb{F}_q$. This new class of arrangements extends the relationship between the Vandermonde and Moore matrices to graphical arrangements. We show that many invariants of the ``$q$-deformation'' behave as ``$q$-deformation'' of invariants of the graphical arrangements. Such invariants include the characteristic (chromatic) polynomial, the Stirling number of the second kind, freeness, exponents, basis of logarithmic vector fields, etc.

Characteristic Polynomials of Deformations of Coxeter Arrangements via levels of regions
We obtain a novel formula for characteristic polynomials of deformations of the Braid arrangement using the notion of levels of regions. As an application, we recover and strengthen results of Chen et al. on the characteristic polynomial of several specific types of hyperplane arrangements via much simpler arguments. Our theorem also generalizes to type B.

Level of Regions for Deformed Braid Arrangements
This paper primarily investigates a specific type of deformation of the braid arrangement $\mathcal{B}_n$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$, denoted by $\mathcal{B}_n^A$ and defined in (1.2). Let $r_l(\mathcal{B}_n^A)$ be the number of regions of level $l$ in $\mathcal{B}_n^A$ with the corresponding exponential generating function $R_l(A;x)$. Using the weighted digraph model introduced by Hetyei [11], we establish a bijection between regions of level $l$ in $\mathcal{B}_n^A$ and valid $m$-acyclic weighted digraphs on the vertex set $[n]$ with exactly $l$ strong components. Based on this bijection, we obtain a property analogous to a polynomial sequence of binomial type, that is, $R_l(A;x)$ satisfies the relation \[ R_l(A;x)=\big(R_1(A;x)\big)^l=R_k(A;x)R_{l-k}(A;x). \] Furthermore, the values $r_l(\mathcal{B}_n^A)$ yield a combinatorial interpretation for the coefficients in the expansion of the characteristic polynomial $χ_{\mathcal{B}_n^A}(t)$ in the basis elements $\binom{t}{l}$, that is, \[χ_{\mathcal{B}_n^A}(t)=\sum_{l=0}^n(-1)^{n-l}r_l(\mathcal{B}_n^A)\binom{t}{l}.\] If $n$, $a$ and $b$ are non-negative integers with $n\ge 2$ and $b-a\ge n-1$, for the deformation $\mathcal{B}_n^{[-a,b]}$ defined in (1.3), its characteristic polynomial has a single real root $0$ of multiplicity one when $n$ is odd, and has one more real root $\frac{n(a+b+1)}{2}$ of multiplicity one when $n$ is even.
Higher-Categorical Associahedra
The second author introduced 2-associahedra as a tool for investigating functoriality properties of Fukaya categories, and he conjectured that they could be realized as face posets of convex polytopes. We introduce a family of posets called categorical $n$-associahedra, which naturally extend the second author's 2-associahedra and the classical associahedra. Categorical $n$-associahedra give a combinatorial model for the poset of strata of a compactified real moduli space of a tree arrangement of affine coordinate subspaces. We construct a family of complete polyhedral fans, called velocity fans, whose coordinates encode the relative velocities of pairs of colliding coordinate subspaces, and whose face posets are the categorical $n$-associahedra. In particular, this gives the first fan realization of 2-associahedra. In the case of the classical associahedron, the velocity fan specializes to the normal fan of Loday's realization of the associahedron. For proving that the velocity fan is a fan, we first construct a cone complex of metric $n$-bracketings and then exhibit a piecewise-linear isomorphism from this complex to the velocity fan. We demonstrate that the velocity fan, which is not simplicial, admits a canonical smooth flag triangulation on the same set of rays, and we describe a second, finer triangulation which provides a new extension of the braid arrangement. We describe piecewise-unimodular maps on the velocity fan such that the image of each cone is a union of cones in the braid arrangement, and we highlight a connection to the theory of building sets and nestohedra. We explore the local iterated fiber product structure of categorical $n$-associahedra and the extent to which this structure is realized by the velocity fan. For the class of concentrated $n$-associahedra we exhibit generalized permutahedra having velocity fans as their normal fans.

Chow and augmented Chow polynomials as evaluations of Poincaré-extended ab-indices
We show that Chow polynomials and augmented Chow polynomials of matroids, and more generally of finite graded posets admitting R-labelings, are obtained as evaluations of their Poincaré-extended ab-indices. This implies in particular explicit combinatorial $γ$-positive expansions for both, providing the first proof of the $γ$-positivity not relying on the Kähler package for the Chow ring. We then evaluate this expansion to obtain an explicit closed formula for the braid arrangement.

Representation stability in the intrinsic hyperplane arrangements associated to irreducible representations of the symmetric-groups
Some of the most classically relevant Hyperplane arrangements are the Braid Arrangements $B_n$ and their associated compliment spaces $\mathcal{F}_n$. In their recent work, Tsilevich, Vershik, and Yuzvinsky construct what they refer to as the intrinsic hyperplane arrangement within any irreducible representation of the symmetric group that generalize the classical braid arrangements. Through examples it is also shown that the associated compliment spaces to these intrinsic arrangements display behaviors far removed from $\mathcal{F}_n$. In this work we study the intrinsic hyperplane arrangements of irreducible representations of the symmetric group from the perspective of representation stability. This work is both theoretical, proving representation stability theorems for hyperplane complements, as well as statistical, examining the outputs of a number of simulations designed to enumerate flats.

Koszulity, supersolvability, and Stirling representations
Published in Ann. Represent. Theory 2, No. 2, 173-247 (2025) • View PublicationBIB
Supersolvable hyperplane arrangements and matroids are known to give rise to certain Koszul algebras, namely their Orlik-Solomon algebras and graded Varchenko-Gel'fand algebras. We explore how this interacts with group actions, particularly for the braid arrangement and the action of the symmetric group, where the Hilbert functions of the algebras and their Koszul duals are given by Stirling numbers of the first and second kinds, respectively. The corresponding symmetric group representations exhibit branching rules that interpret Stirling number recurrences, which are shown to apply to all supersolvable arrangements. They also enjoy representation stability properties that follow from Koszul duality.

Invariant theory for the face algebra of the braid arrangement
The faces of the braid arrangement form a monoid. The associated monoid algebra -- the face algebra -- is well-studied, especially in relation to card shuffling and other Markov chains. In this paper, we explore the action of the symmetric group on the face algebra from the perspective of invariant theory. Bidigare proved the invariant subalgebra of the face algebra is (anti)isomorphic to Solomon's descent algebra. We answer the more general question: what is the structure of the face algebra as a simultaneous representation of the symmetric group and Solomon's descent algebra? Special cases of our main theorem recover the Cartan invariants of Solomon's descent algebra discovered by Garsia-Reutenauer and work of Uyemura-Reyes on certain shuffling representations. Our proof techniques involve the homology of intervals in the lattice of set partitions.

Freeness of hyperplane arrangements associated with gain graphs
Athanasiadis studied arrangements obtained by adding shifted hyperplanes to the braid arrangement. Similarly, Bailey studied arrangements obtained by adding tilted hyperplanes to the braid arrangement. These two kinds of arrangements are associated with directed graphs and their freeness was characterized in terms of the associated graphs. In addition, there is coincidence of freeness. Namely, if Athanasiadis' arrangement is free, then the corresponding Bailey's arrangement is free, and vice versa. In this paper, we generalize this phenomenon by using gain graphs.
