The Universe Fan
The wavefunction of the universe, as studied in perturbative quantum field theory, is a rational function whose singularities and factorization properties encode a rich underlying combinatorial structure. We define and study a broad generalization of such wavefunctions that can be associated to any lattice. We obtain these wavefunctions as the Laplace transform of a polyhedral fan, the universe fan, whose cones are defined by positivity conditions reflecting a notion of causality in the lattice, and we describe its face lattice. In the matroid case, the universe fan projects to the nested set fan, and the wavefunctions we define recover the matroid amplitudes introduced by Lam as residues. Moreover, in the case relevant for physics, the positivity conditions give a novel way to study the wavefunction, and we show how it is related to the cosmological polytopes of Arkani-Hamed, Benincasa, Postnikov. Finally, we study refinements of the universe fan induced by piecewise linear (tropical) functions. The resulting subdivisions project to refinements of the nested set fan and correspond dually to blow-ups of matroid polytopes, generalizing the cosmohedron polytope.
Polyhedral Aspects of Maxoids
The conditional independence (CI) relation of a distribution in a max-linear Bayesian network depends on its weight matrix through the $C^\ast$-separation criterion. These CI~models, which we call maxoids, are compositional graphoids which are in general not representable by Gaussian random variables. We prove that every maxoid can be obtained from a transitively closed weighted DAG and show that the stratification of generic weight matrices by their maxoids yields a polyhedral~fan. We also use this connection to polyhedral geometry to develop an algorithm for solving the conditional independence implication problem for maxoids.

Toric Amplitudes and Universal Adjoints
A toric amplitude is a rational function associated to a simplicial polyhedral fan. The definition is inspired by scattering amplitudes in particle physics. We prove algebraic properties of such amplitudes and study the geometry of their zero loci. These hypersurfaces play the role of Warren's adjoint via a dual volume interpretation. We investigate their Fano schemes and singular loci via the nef cone and toric irrelevant ideal of the fan.

The GroebnerWalk.jl package for OSCAR
Computing Gröbner bases is known to have a very high upper bound on computation time with respect to input length. Due to the connection between polyhedral geometry and Gröbner bases through the Gröbner fan, one can attempt an incremental approach to compute Gröbner bases. First computing a Gröbner basis with respect to an `easy' term order and transforming that result to a Gröbner basis with respect to the desired term order by using information about this polyhedral fan is done by a family of algorithms termed as Gröbner walk. We implemented two variants of the Gröbner walk in the computer algebra system OSCAR and compared their performance with classical Gröbner basis methods already found in OSCAR.

The Chirotropical Grassmannian
Published in Special volume on Positive Geometry, Le Matematiche 80 (1) (2025), 123-142 • View PublicationBIB
Recent developments in particle physics have revealed deep connections between scattering amplitudes and tropical geometry. From the heart of this relationship emerged the chirotropical Grassmannian $\text{Trop}^χ\text{G}(k,n)$ and the chirotropical Dressian $\text{Dr}^χ(k,n)$, polyhedral fans built from uniform realizable chirotopes that encode the combinatorial structure of Generalized Feynman Diagrams. We prove that $\text{Trop}^χ\text{G}(3,n) = \text{Dr}^χ(3,n)$ for $n = 6,7,8$, and develop algorithms to compute these objects from their rays modulo lineality. Using these algorithms, we compute all chirotropical Grassmannians $\text{Trop}^χ\text{G}(3,n)$ for $n = 6,7,8$ across all isomorphism classes of chirotopes. We prove that each chirotopal configuration space $X^χ(3,6)$ is diffeomorphic to a polytope and propose an associated canonical logarithmic differential form. Finally, we show that the equality between chirotropical Grassmannian and Dressian fails for $(k,n) = (4,8)$.
Higher-Categorical Associahedra
The second author introduced 2-associahedra as a tool for investigating functoriality properties of Fukaya categories, and he conjectured that they could be realized as face posets of convex polytopes. We introduce a family of posets called categorical $n$-associahedra, which naturally extend the second author's 2-associahedra and the classical associahedra. Categorical $n$-associahedra give a combinatorial model for the poset of strata of a compactified real moduli space of a tree arrangement of affine coordinate subspaces. We construct a family of complete polyhedral fans, called velocity fans, whose coordinates encode the relative velocities of pairs of colliding coordinate subspaces, and whose face posets are the categorical $n$-associahedra. In particular, this gives the first fan realization of 2-associahedra. In the case of the classical associahedron, the velocity fan specializes to the normal fan of Loday's realization of the associahedron. For proving that the velocity fan is a fan, we first construct a cone complex of metric $n$-bracketings and then exhibit a piecewise-linear isomorphism from this complex to the velocity fan. We demonstrate that the velocity fan, which is not simplicial, admits a canonical smooth flag triangulation on the same set of rays, and we describe a second, finer triangulation which provides a new extension of the braid arrangement. We describe piecewise-unimodular maps on the velocity fan such that the image of each cone is a union of cones in the braid arrangement, and we highlight a connection to the theory of building sets and nestohedra. We explore the local iterated fiber product structure of categorical $n$-associahedra and the extent to which this structure is realized by the velocity fan. For the class of concentrated $n$-associahedra we exhibit generalized permutahedra having velocity fans as their normal fans.
The Real Tropical Geometry of Neural Networks
We consider a binary classifier defined as the sign of a tropical rational function, that is, as the difference of two convex piecewise linear functions. The parameter space of ReLU neural networks is contained as a semialgebraic set inside the parameter space of tropical rational functions. We initiate the study of two different subdivisions of this parameter space: a subdivision into semialgebraic sets, on which the combinatorial type of the decision boundary is fixed, and a subdivision into a polyhedral fan, capturing the combinatorics of the partitions of the dataset. The sublevel sets of the 0/1-loss function arise as subfans of this classification fan, and we show that the level-sets are not necessarily connected. We describe the classification fan i) geometrically, as normal fan of the activation polytope, and ii) combinatorially through a list of properties of associated bipartite graphs, in analogy to covector axioms of oriented matroids and tropical oriented matroids. Our findings extend and refine the connection between neural networks and tropical geometry by observing structures established in real tropical geometry, such as positive tropicalizations of hypersurfaces and tropical semialgebraic sets.

Subdivisions of Hypersimplices: with a View Toward Finite Metric Spaces
The secondary fan $Σ(k,n)$ is a polyhedral fan which stratifies the regular subdivisions of the hypersimplices $Δ(k,n)$. We find new infinite families of rays of $Σ(k,n)$, and we compute the fans $Σ(2,7)$ and $Σ(3,6)$. In the special case $k=2$ the fan $Σ(2,n)$ is closely related to the metric fan $\mathop{MF}(n)$, which forms a natural parameter space for the metric spaces on $n$ points. So our results yield a classification of the finite metric spaces on seven points.

Polyhedral combinatorics of bisectors
For any polyhedral norm, the bisector of two points is a polyhedral complex. We study combinatorial aspects of this complex. We investigate the sensitivity of the presence of labelled maximal cells in the bisector relative to the position of the two points. We thereby extend work of Criado, Joswig and Santos (2022) who showed that for the tropical distance function the presence of maximal cells is encoded by a polyhedral fan, the bisection fan. We initiate the study of bisection cones and bisection fans with respect to arbitrary polyhedral norms. In particular, we show that the bisection fan always exists for polyhedral norms in two dimensions. Furthermore, we determine the bisection fan of the $\ell_{1}$-norm and the $\ell_{\infty}$-norm as well as the discrete Wasserstein distance in arbitrary dimensions. Intricate combinatorial structures, such as the resonance arrangement, make their appearance. We apply our results to obtain bounds on the combinatorial complexity of the bisectors.

Polyhedral Geometry in OSCAR
OSCAR is an innovative new computer algebra system which combines and extends the power of its four cornerstone systems - GAP (group theory), Singular (algebra and algebraic geometry), Polymake (polyhedral geometry), and Antic (number theory). Assuming little familiarity with the subject, we give an introduction to computations in polyhedral geometry using OSCAR, as a chapter of the upcoming OSCAR book. In particular, we define polytopes, polyhedra, and polyhedral fans, and we give a brief overview about computing convex hulls and solving linear programs. Three detailed case studies are left for experts in polyhedral geometry. These are concerned with face numbers of random polytopes, constructions and properties of Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes, and secondary polytopes.

An $E_\infty$ structure on the matroid grassmannian
In analogy with the origin of the additive structure of $K$-theory, we construct an $E_\infty$ structure on the matroid Grassmannian (the space of oriented matroids) for which the underlying binary operation is the direct sum of matroids. The proof involves lifting the polyhedral fan structure of the Dressian to a polyhedral model for the matroid Grassmannian, and introducing a novel $E_\infty$ operad made from the space of infinite subsets of $\mathbb{N}$.

Mixed volumes of normal complexes
Normal complexes are orthogonal truncations of polyhedral fans. In this paper, we develop the study of mixed volumes for normal complexes. Our main result is a sufficiency condition that ensures when the mixed volumes of normal complexes associated to a given fan satisfy the Alexandrov-Fenchel inequalities. By specializing to Bergman fans of matroids, we give a new proof of the Heron-Rota-Welsh Conjecture as a consequence of the Alexandrov-Fenchel inequalities for normal complexes.

On maximal rational poylhedral fans
In this paper we study the geometry and combinatorics of the possible rational polyhedral fans with a given set of rays. The main questions we consider are when such fans are projective, complete, or simplicial. To answer these questions we use techniques of invariant theory to characterize the quotients of maximal saturated open sets in torus representations.

Generalized metric tree arrangements and Dressians
Metric trees and metric tree arrangements index cones in the polyhedral fan structure in the Dressian $Dr(2,n)$ and $Dr(3,n)$ respectively. We introduce the notion of generalized metric tree arrangements which parameterize points in $Dr(k,n)$ and extend previously known results to $Dr(k,n)$ along with providing explicit examples of these generalized metric tree arrangements. We study the adjacency of cones in the positive Dressian $Dr_{>0}(3, n)$ and introduce generalized Whitehead moves which provide a condition for adjacency of maximal cones in $Dr_{>0}(3,n)$ in terms of the associated metric tree arrangements.

Hyperplane Arrangements and Compactifications of Vector Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Schubert varieties of hyperplane arrangements, also known as matroid Schubert varieties, play an essential role in the proof of the Dowling-Wilson conjecture and in Kazhdan-Lusztig theory for matroids. We study these varieties as equivariant compactifications of affine spaces, and give necessary and sufficient conditions to characterize them. We also generalize the theory to include partial compactifications and morphisms between them. Our results resemble the correspondence between toric varieties and polyhedral fans.

The MST-fan of a regular subdivision
The dual graph $Γ(h)$ of a regular triangulation $Σ(h)$ carries a natural metric structure. The minimum spanning trees of $Γ(h)$ recently proved to be conclusive for detecting significant data signal in the context of population genetics. In this paper we prove that the parameter space of such minimum spanning trees is organized as a polyhedral fan, called the MST-fan of $Σ(h)$, which subdivides the secondary cone of $Σ(h)$ into parameter cones. We partially describe its local face structure and examine the connection to tropical geometry in virtue of matroids and Bergman fans.

Tropical Poincaré duality spaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
The tropical fundamental class of a rational balanced polyhedral fan induces cap products between tropical cohomology and tropical Borel-Moore homology. When all these cap products are isomorphisms, the fan is said to be a tropical Poincaré duality space. If all the stars of faces also are such spaces, such as for fans of matroids, the fan is called a local tropical Poincaré duality space. In this article, we first give some necessary conditions for fans to be tropical Poincaré duality spaces and a classification in dimension one. Next, we prove that tropical Poincaré duality for the stars of all faces of dimension greater than zero and a vanishing condition implies tropical Poincaré duality of the fan. This leads to necessary and sufficient conditions for a fan to be a local tropical Poincaré duality space. Finally, we use such fans to show that certain abstract balanced polyhedral spaces satisfy tropical Poincaré duality.

Ambitropical geometry, hyperconvexity and zero-sum games
Shapley operators of undiscounted zero-sum two-player games are order-preserving maps that commute with the addition of a constant. We characterize the fixed point sets of Shapley operators, in finite dimension (i.e., for games with a finite state space). Some of these characterizations are of a lattice theoretical nature, whereas some other rely on metric or tropical geometry. More precisely, we show that fixed point sets of Shapley operators are special instances of hyperconvex spaces: they are sup-norm non-expansive retracts of $\R^n$, and also lattices in the induced partial order. Moreover, they retain properties of convex sets, with a notion of ``convex hull'' defined only up to isomorphism. This provides an effective construction of the injective hull or tight span, in the case of additive cones. For deterministic games with finite action spaces, these fixed point sets are supports of polyhedral complexes, with a cell decomposition attached to stationary strategies of the players, in which each cell is an alcoved polyhedron of $A_n$ type. We finally provide an explicit local representation of the latter fixed point sets, as polyhedral fans canonically associated to lattices included in the Boolean hypercube.

Real phase structures on matroid fans and matroid orientations
Published in J. Lond. Math. Soc. 106.4 (2022) pp. 3687-3710 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the notion of real phase structure on rational polyhedral fans in Euclidean space. Such a structure consists of an assignment of affine spaces over $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$ to each top dimensional face of the fan subject to two conditions. Given an oriented matroid we can construct a real phase structure on the fan of the underlying matroid. Conversely, we show that from a real phase structure on a matroid fan we can produce an orientation of the underlying matroid. Thus real phase structures are cryptomorphic to matroid orientations. The topes of the orientated matroid are recovered immediately from the real phase structure. We also provide a direct way to recover the signed circuits of the oriented matroid from the real phase structure.
