When are tropical multidegrees positive?
We study the positivity of the tropical multidegrees of a tropical variety contained in a product of real vector spaces. These multidegrees are obtained by stably intersecting the tropical variety with pullbacks of positive tropical divisors. We introduce projection-purity and facet-selectability, two conditions under which positivity is determined by the dimensions of the natural projections, and the support of the tropical multidegrees is precisely the set of lattice points of a polymatroid base polytope. This extends He's theorem for translation-admissible tropical varieties. We also show that these conditions alone do not force the corresponding tropical volume polynomial to be Lorentzian. By contrast, for the augmented Bergman fan of any polymatroid, the positive multidegrees are supported precisely on the lattice points of the polymatroid base polytope, and the tropical volume polynomial is Lorentzian for every sequence of positive tropical divisors.

Toward a classification of tropical complete intersection number one
By bridging two classification results -- the Esterov--Gusev classification of tuples of lattice polytopes of mixed volume one, and Fink's characterization of Bergman fans -- we formulate a classification conjecture describing when the stable intersection of a tropical fan F with the tropicalization Trop(X) of a subvariety of T^n is a reduced point. Our main results establish this conjecture in three fundamental cases -- unmixed sequences, hypersurface complete-intersection cycles, and tropical 2-cycles -- and develop several tools intended for the general case.

Algebraic cobordism rings of wonderful varieties and matroids
We give two combinatorial presentations for the algebraic cobordism ring $Ω^*(M)$ of the toric variety of the Bergman fan of any loopless matroid $M$. As a consequence of our presentations, we obtain an $Ω^*(\mathrm{pt})$-algebra isomorphism $Ω^*(M) \simeq CH^*(M) \otimes_{\mathbb{Z}} Ω^*(\mathrm{pt})$, where $CH^*(M)$ is the Chow ring of $M$ and $Ω^*(\mathrm{pt})$ is the algebraic cobordism ring of the point. This isomorphism generalizes, in part, the exceptional integral isomorphism between the Chow ring and $K$-ring of a matroid, studied in the recent works of Berget--Eur--Spink--Tseng and Larson--Li--Payne--Proudfoot. For a complex hyperplane arrangement $\mathcal{H}$, we prove that the algebraic cobordism ring of the wonderful variety $W_\mathcal{H}$ of $\mathcal{H}$ and the algebraic cobordism ring of the toric variety of the matroid underlying $\mathcal{H}$ are isomorphic, and that both rings coincide with the complex cobordism ring of $W_\mathcal{H}$.

Tropical $k$-means clustering for phylogenetic trees
The asymmetric tropical distance is a distance measure on the tropical torus $\mathbb{R}^n/\mathbb{R}\mathbf{1}$ and in particular on the Bergman fan $B(K_N) \subseteq \mathbb{R}^{\binom{N}{2}}/\mathbb{R}\mathbf{1}$ of the complete graphical matroid. In this paper, we define and analyse a clustering algorithm for equidistant phylogenetic trees based on this distance, using the correspondence between $B(K_N)$ and the space of equidistant trees with $N$ leaves.
Line Shellings of Geometric Lattices
Inspired by Bruggesser-Mani's line shellings of polytopes, we introduce line shellings for the lattice of flats of a matroid: given a normal complex for a Bergman fan of a matroid induced by a building set, we show that the lexicographic order of the coordinates of its vertices is a shelling order. This gives a new proof of Björner's classical result that the order complex of the lattice of flats of a matroid is shellable, and demonstrates shellability for all nested set complexes for matroids.
Counting fibres of the Hadamard product using Bergman fans
We study the generic fibre of the Hadamard product of linear spaces via matroid theory and tropical geometry. To do so, we introduce the flip product, a numerical invariant associated to a pair of matroids defined via the stable intersection of their (flipped) Bergman fans. Our first main result is that the cardinality of a generic fibre for the Hadamard product of linear spaces is exactly the flip product of their matroids. We also provide a recursive algorithm for computing the flip product of any pair of matroids. As an application of our techniques, we extend the notion of realisation numbers from rigidity theory to rotational-symmetric and periodic realisation numbers and we provide combinatorial algorithms to compute them. Finally, we show a number of existing matroid invariants are specialisations of the flip product, including the beta invariant.

Chow polynomials of rank-uniform labeled posets
We introduce and develop the theory of UMEL-shellable posets. These are posets equipped with an edge-lexicographical labeling satisfying certain uniformity and monotonicity properties. This framework encompasses classical families of combinatorial geometries, including uniform matroids, projective and affine geometries, braid matroids of type A and B, and all Dowling geometries. It also comprises all rank-uniform supersolvable lattices, and therefore also all rank-uniform distributive lattices. Our main result establishes real-rootedness phenomena for the Chow polynomials, the augmented Chow polynomials, and the chain polynomials associated with those posets, thus making simultaneous progress towards conjectures by Ferroni--Schröter, Huh--Stevens, and Athanasiadis--Kalampogia-Evangelinou. In the special case of lattices of flats of matroids, the (augmented) Chow polynomials coincide with the Hilbert--Poincaré series of the Chow ring associated to the smooth and generally noncompact toric varieties of the (augmented) Bergman fan of the matroid, whereas the chain polynomial encodes the Hilbert--Poincaré series of the Stanley--Reisner ring of the Bergman complex of the matroid. Therefore, these real-rootedness results are tightly linked to the study of these algebro-geometric structures in matroid theory.
The tropical galaxy of a Laman graph
A Laman graph $G$ is a minimally rigid graph in dimension two, and its realization number is its number of distinct embeddings with fixed generic edge lengths. While conjectured to grow exponentially in the number of vertices of $G$, the best proven lower bound is merely $2$. Motivated by the fact that the realization number can be expressed as a tropical intersection product involving $\mathrm{Trop}(G)$, the Bergman fan of the graphic matroid of $G$, and the fact that stars of $\mathrm{Trop}(G)$ naturally lead to lower bounds thereof, we introduce the tropical galaxy of $G$ together with a galactic pairing thereon. We study structural properties of this pairing, such as under which conditions it is non-trivially subadditive, and connect it being non-zero to arboreal pairs. We also present a software package for working with tropical galaxies.
Tropical linear series and matroids
We study a notion of tropical linear series on metric graphs that combines two essential properties of tropicalizations of linear series on algebraic curves: the Baker-Norine rank and the independence rank. Our main results relate the local and global geometry of these tropical linear series to the combinatorial geometry of matroids and valuated matroids, respectively. As an application, we characterize exactly when the tropicalization of the canonical linear series on a single curve is equal to the locus of realizable tropical canonical divisors determined by Möller, Ulirsch, and Werner. We also illustrate our results with a wealth of examples; in particular, we show that the Bergman fan of every matroid appears as the local fan of a tropical linear series on a metric graph. The paper concludes with a list of ten open questions for future investigation.

Tropical fans supporting a reduced 0-dimensional complete intersection
An affine tropical fan is called regular if it supports a reduced 0-dimensional complete intersection. For some cases the classification of regular fans is already complete. It was proved by Fink that tropical varieties of degree 1 are exactly Bergman fans, and later Esterov and Gusev classified all lattice polytopes whose mixed volume equals 1. We introduce the notion of a gallery for tropical fans and use it to classify all one-dimensional regular fans, thereby obtaining a minimal model programme for such fans. In dimension 2 we prove a finiteness theorem: every regular fan that satisfies the given upper bound condition is precisely the support of a finite covering by two-dimensional galleries, and only finitely many such fans exist.
Piecewise-exponential functions and Ehrhart fans
This paper studies rings of integral piecewise-exponential functions on rational fans. Motivated by lattice-point counting in polytopes, we introduce a special class of unimodular fans called Ehrhart fans, whose rings of integral piecewise-exponential functions admit a canonical linear functional that behaves like a lattice-point count. In particular, we verify that all complete unimodular fans are Ehrhart and that the Ehrhart functional agrees with lattice-point counting in corresponding polytopes, which can otherwise be interpreted as holomorphic Euler characteristics of vector bundles on smooth toric varieties. We also prove that all Bergman fans of matroids are Ehrhart and that the Ehrhart functional in this case agrees with the Euler characteristic of matroids, introduced recently by Larson, Li, Payne, and Proudfoot. A key property that we prove about the Ehrharticity of fans is that it only depends on the support of the fan, not on the fan structure, thus providing a uniform framework for studying K-rings and Euler characteristics of complete fans and Bergman fans simultaneously.
A tropical approach to rigidity: counting realisations of frameworks
A realisation of a graph in the plane as a bar-joint framework is rigid if there are finitely many other realisations, up to isometries, with the same edge lengths. Each of these finitely-many realisations can be seen as a solution to a system of quadratic equations prescribing the distances between pairs of points. For generic realisations, the size of the solution set depends only on the underlying graph so long as we allow for complex solutions. We provide a characterisation of the realisation number - that is the cardinality of this complex solution set - of a minimally rigid graph. Our characterisation uses tropical geometry to express the realisation number as an intersection of Bergman fans of the graphic matroid. As a consequence, we derive a combinatorial upper bound on the realisation number involving the Tutte polynomial. Moreover, we provide computational evidence that our upper bound is usually an improvement on the mixed volume bound.

Matroids and amplitudes
In the 1990s, Kita--Yoshida and Cho--Matsumoto introduced intersection forms on the twisted (co)homologies of hyperplane arrangement complements. We give a closed combinatorial formula for these intersection pairings. We show that these intersection pairings are obtained from (continuous and discrete) Laplace transforms of subfans of the Bergman fan of the associated matroid. We compute inverses of these intersection pairings, allowing us to identify (variants of) these intersection forms with the contravariant form of Schechtman--Varchenko, and the bilinear form of Varchenko. Building on parallel joint work with C. Eur, we define a notion of scattering amplitudes for matroids. We show that matroid amplitudes satisfy locality and unitarity, and recover biadjoint scalar amplitudes in the case of the complete graphic matroid. We apply our formulae for twisted intersection forms to deduce old and new formulae for scattering amplitudes.

Tor Groups of the Stanley-Reisner Ring of a Matroid
We introduce the Tor groups $ \mathop{Tor}_{\bullet}^{S_{\mathrm{M}}^{\circ}} \left( \mathbb{C}[Σ_{\mathrm{M}}], \mathbb{C} \right)_{\bullet} $ for a loopless matroid $\mathrm{M}$ as a way to study the extra relations occurring in the linear ideal of the Feichtner-Yuzvinsky presentation of the Chow ring $ A^{\bullet}(\mathrm{M}) $. This extends the definition of the Chow ring of a matroid since $ \mathop{Tor}_{0}^{S_{\mathrm{M}}^{\circ}} \left( \mathbb{C}[Σ_{\mathrm{M}}], \mathbb{C} \right)_{\bullet} \cong A^{\bullet}(\mathrm{M}) $. Our main tool in studying these groups is to recognize them as cohomology of the toric variety associated to the Bergman fan of the matroid. With this geometric approach, we show that these Tor groups fit into a long exact sequence arising from the matroidal flips of Adiprasito, Huh, and Katz, extending the short exact sequence in the case of Chow rings. Using this long exact sequence we give a recursive formula for the Hilbert series of the Tor algebra of a uniform matroid.

Phase limit sets of linear spaces and discriminants
We show that the closure of the coamoeba of a linear space/hyperplane complement is the union of products of coamoebas of hyperplane complements coming from flags of flats, and relate this to the Bergman fan. Using the Horn-Kapranov parameterization of a reduced discriminant, this gives a partial description of the phase limit sets of discriminants and duals of toric varieties. When d=3, we show that each 3-dimensional component of the phase limit set of the discriminant is a prism over a discriminant coamoeba in dimension 2, which has a polyhedral description by a result of Nilsson and Passare.

The geometry of ranked symplectic matroids
This paper is a continuation of my paper "Lattices of flats for symplectic matroids". We explore geometric constructions originating from the lattice of flats of ranked symplectic matroids. We observe that a ranked symplectic matroid always sits between two ordinary matroids and use this fact to prove that it has many of the same properties of ordinary matroids. We compute the dimension of its order complex using its Möbius function, We show that its matroid polytope is geometrically defined using its flats and connected to its Bergman fan. We finish by highlighting differences between its toric variety and the toric variety of an ordinary matroid, and give a partial proof of Mason's conjecture for ranked symplectic matroids.

The Signed Goldman-Iwahori Space and Real Tropical Linear Spaces
The Goldman-Iwahori space of seminorms on a finite-dimensional vector space over a non-Archimedean field is a non-Archimedean analogue of a symmetric space. If, in addition, $K$ is real closed, we define a signed analogue of the Goldman-Iwahori space consisting of signed seminorms. This new space can be seen as the linear algebraic version of the real analytification of projective space over $K$. We study this space with methods from real tropical geometry by constructing natural real tropicalization maps from the signed Goldman-Iwahori space to all real tropicalized linear spaces. We prove that this space is the limit of all real tropicalized linear embeddings. We give a combinatorial interpretation of this result by showing that the signed Goldman-Iwahori space is the real tropical linear space associated to the universal realizable oriented matroid. In the constant coefficient case for $K = \mathbb{R}$, we describe this space explicitly and relate it to real Bergman fans.

Amalgams of matroids, fibre products and tropical graph correspondences
We prove that the proper amalgam of matroids $M_1$ and $M_2$ along their common restriction $N$ exists if and only if the tropical fibre product of Bergman fans ${B(M_1) \times_{B(N)} B(M_2)}$ is positive. We introduce tropical correspondences between Bergman fans as tropical subcycles in their product, similar to correspondences in algebraic geometry, and define a "graph correspondence" of the map of lattices. We prove that graph construction is a functor for the "covering" maps of lattices, exploiting a generalization of Bergman fan which we call a "Flag fan".

Realizability of matroid quotients
We characterize the realizability of a quotient of matroids, over an infinite field $K$, in terms of the realizability over $K$ of a single matroid associated to it, called the Higgs major. This result extends to realizability of flag matroids. Further, we provide some applications to the relative realizability problem for Bergman fans in tropical geometry.

Tropical Geometry of Rado Matroids
In this note, we characterize the products of simplicial generators for the Chow ring of a loopless matroid, extending a result of Backman, Eur, and Simpson. We prove that the stable intersection of a collection of tropical hyperplanes centered at the origin with the Bergman fan of a matroid is the Bergman fan of the dual of a certain Rado matroid.
