Hodge theory for tropical fans
This paper is the first in a series devoted to the development of a Hodge theory for tropical varieties. We introduce a notion of T-stability for tropical fans and prove that various geometric properties of tropical fans are T-stable. As a consequence, we establish Kähler properties for the Chow ring in a large class of tropical fans, going beyond the case of matroids and their Bergman fans. As a by-product, we obtain a new proof of the Kähler package for combinatorial geometries. The approach makes it possible to deal with tropical fans with general weights.

Numerical characterization of the hard Lefschetz classes of dimension two
We study the numerical characterization of two dimensional hard Lefschetz classes given by the complete intersections of nef classes. In Shenfeld and van Handel's breakthrough work on the characterization of the extremals of the Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality for convex polytopes, they proposed an open question on the algebraic analogue of the characterization. By taking further inspiration from our previous work with Shang on hard Lefschetz theorems for free line bundles, we formulate and refine the conjectural picture more precisely and settle the open question when the collection of nef classes is given by a rearrangement of supercriticality, which in particular includes the big nef collection as a special case. The main results enable us to refine some previous results and study the extremals of Hodge index inequality, and more importantly provide the first series of examples of hard Lefschetz classes of dimension two both in algebraic geometry and analytic geometry, in which one can allow nontrivial augmented base locus and thus drop the semi-ampleness or semi-positivity assumption. As a key ingredient of the numerical characterization, we establish a local Hodge index inequality for Lorentzian polynomials, which is the algebraic analogue of the local Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality obtained by Shenfeld-van Handel for convex polytopes. This result holds in broad contexts, e.g., it holds on a smooth projective variety, on a compact Kähler manifold and on a Lorentzian fan, which contains the Bergman fan of a matroid or polymatroid as a typical example.

Mixed volumes of normal complexes
Normal complexes are orthogonal truncations of polyhedral fans. In this paper, we develop the study of mixed volumes for normal complexes. Our main result is a sufficiency condition that ensures when the mixed volumes of normal complexes associated to a given fan satisfy the Alexandrov-Fenchel inequalities. By specializing to Bergman fans of matroids, we give a new proof of the Heron-Rota-Welsh Conjecture as a consequence of the Alexandrov-Fenchel inequalities for normal complexes.
The tropical critical points of an affine matroid
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that the number of tropical critical points of an affine matroid (M,e) is equal to the beta invariant of M. Motivated by the computation of maximum likelihood degrees, this number is defined to be the degree of the intersection of the Bergman fan of (M,e) and the inverted Bergman fan of N=(M/e)*, where e is an element of M that is neither a loop nor a coloop. Equivalently, for a generic weight vector w on E-e, this is the number of ways to find weights (0,x) on M and y on N with x+y=w such that on each circuit of M (resp. N), the minimum x-weight (resp. y-weight) occurs at least twice. This answers a question of Sturmfels.
The Bergman fan of a polymatroid
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the Bergman fan of a polymatroid and prove that the Chow ring of the Bergman fan is isomorphic to the Chow ring of the polymatroid. Using the Bergman fan, we establish the Kähler package for the Chow ring of the polymatroid, recovering and strengthening a result of Pagaria-Pezzoli.

The MST-fan of a regular subdivision
The dual graph $Γ(h)$ of a regular triangulation $Σ(h)$ carries a natural metric structure. The minimum spanning trees of $Γ(h)$ recently proved to be conclusive for detecting significant data signal in the context of population genetics. In this paper we prove that the parameter space of such minimum spanning trees is organized as a polyhedral fan, called the MST-fan of $Σ(h)$, which subdivides the secondary cone of $Σ(h)$ into parameter cones. We partially describe its local face structure and examine the connection to tropical geometry in virtue of matroids and Bergman fans.

The geometry of geometries: matroid theory, old and new
Published • View PublicationBIB
The theory of matroids or combinatorial geometries originated in linear algebra and graph theory, and has deep connections with many other areas, including field theory, matching theory, submodular optimization, Lie combinatorics, and total positivity. Matroids capture the combinatorial essence that these different settings share. In recent years, the (classical, polyhedral, algebraic, and tropical) geometric roots of the field have grown much deeper, bearing new fruits. We survey some recent successes, stemming from three geometric models of a matroid: the matroid polytope, the Bergman fan, and the conormal fan.

Tropical fans and normal complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Associated to any divisor in the Chow ring of a simplicial tropical fan, we construct a family of polytopal complexes, called normal complexes, which we propose as an analogue of the well-studied notion of normal polytopes from the setting of complete fans. We describe certain closed convex polyhedral cones of divisors for which the "volume" of each divisor in the cone - that is, the degree of its top power - is equal to the volume of the associated normal complexes. For the Bergman fan of any matroid with building set, we prove that there exists an open family of such cones of divisors with nonempty interiors. We view the theory of normal complexes developed in this paper as a polytopal model underlying the combinatorial Hodge theory pioneered by Adiprasito, Huh, and Katz.

Homology of tropical fans
The aim of this paper is to study homological properties of tropical fans and to propose a notion of smoothness in tropical geometry, which goes beyond matroids and their Bergman fans and which leads to an enrichment of the category of smooth tropical varieties. Among the resulting applications, we prove the Hodge isomorphism theorem which asserts that the Chow rings of smooth unimodular tropical fans are isomorphic to the tropical cohomology rings of their corresponding canonical compactifications, and prove a slightly weaker statement for any unimodular fan. We furthermore introduce a notion of shellability for tropical fans and show that shellable tropical fans are smooth and thus enjoy all the nice homological properties of smooth tropical fans. Several other interesting properties for tropical fans are shown to be shellable. Finally, we obtain a generalization, both in the tropical and in the classical setting, of the pioneering work of Feichtner-Yuzvinsky and De Concini-Procesi on the cohomology ring of wonderful compactifications of complements of hyperplane arrangements. The results in this paper form the basis for our subsequent works on Hodge theory for tropical and non-Archimedean varieties.

Hodge theory for tropical varieties
In this paper we prove that the cohomology of smooth projective tropical varieties verify the tropical analogs of three fundamental theorems which govern the cohomology of complex projective varieties: Hard Lefschetz theorem, Hodge-Riemann relations and monodromy-weight conjecture. On the way to establish these results, we introduce and prove other results of independent interest. This includes a generalization of the results of Adiprasito-Huh-Katz, Hodge theory for combinatorial geometries, to any unimodular quasi-projective fan having the same support as the Bergman fan of a matroid, a tropical analog for Bergman fans of the pioneering work of Feichtner-Yuzvinsky on cohomology of wonderful compactifications (treated in a separate paper, recalled and used here), a combinatorial study of the tropical version of the Steenbrink spectral sequence, a treatment of Kahler forms in tropical geometry and their associated Hodge-Lefschetz structures, a tropical version of the projective bundle formula, and a result in polyhedral geometry on the existence of quasi-projective unimodular triangulations of polyhedral spaces.

Lagrangian geometry of matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the conormal fan of a matroid M, which is a Lagrangian analog of the Bergman fan of M. We use the conormal fan to give a Lagrangian interpretation of the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson cycle of M. This allows us to express the h-vector of the broken circuit complex of M in terms of the intersection theory of the conormal fan of M. We also develop general tools for tropical Hodge theory to prove that the conormal fan satisfies Poincaré duality, the hard Lefschetz theorem, and the Hodge-Riemann relations. The Lagrangian interpretation of the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson cycle of M, when combined with the Hodge-Riemann relations for the conormal fan of M, implies Brylawski's and Dawson's conjectures that the h-vectors of the broken circuit complex and the independence complex of M are log-concave sequences.

The motivic zeta functions of a matroid
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce motivic zeta functions for matroids. These zeta functions are defined as sums over the lattice points of Bergman fans, and in the realizable case, they coincide with the motivic Igusa zeta functions of hyperplane arrangements. We show that these motivic zeta functions satisfy a functional equation arising from matroid Poincaré duality in the sense of Adiprasito-Huh-Katz. In the process, we obtain a formula for the Hilbert series of the cohomology ring of a matroid, in the sense of Feichtner-Yuzvinsky. We then show that our motivic zeta functions specialize to the topological zeta functions for matroids introduced by van der Veer, and we compute the first two coefficients in the Taylor expansion of these topological zeta functions, providing affirmative answers to two questions posed by van der Veer.

Tropical Moduli Space of Rational Graphically Stable Curves
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study moduli spaces of rational graphically stable tropical curves and a refinement given by radial alignment. Given a complete multipartite graph $Γ$, the moduli space of radially aligned $Γ$-stable tropical curves can be given the structure of a balanced fan. This fan structure coincides with the Bergman fan of the cycle matroid of $Γ$.

Positively Hyperbolic Varieties, Tropicalization, and Positroids
A variety of codimension $c$ in complex affine space is called positively hyperbolic if the imaginary part of any point in it does not lie in any positive linear subspace of dimension $c$. Positively hyperbolic hypersurfaces are defined by stable polynomials. We give a new characterization of positively hyperbolic varieties using sign variations, and show that they are equivalently defined by being hyperbolic with respect to the positive part of the Grassmannian, in the sense of Shamovich and Vinnikov. We prove that positively hyperbolic projective varieties have tropicalizations that are locally subfans of the type $A$ hyperplane arrangement defined by $x_i = x_j$, in which the maximal cones satisfy a non-crossing condition. This gives new proofs of some results of Choe--Oxley--Sokal--Wagner and Brändén on Newton polytopes and tropicalizations of stable polynomials. We settle the question of which tropical varieties can be obtained as tropicalizations of positively hyperbolic varieties in the case of tropical toric varieties, constant-coefficient tropical curves, and Bergman fans. Along the way, we also give a new characterization of positroids in terms of a non-crossing condition on their Bergman fans.

Tropical ideals do not realise all Bergman fans
Every tropical ideal in the sense of Maclagan-Rincón has an associated tropical variety, a finite polyhedral complex equipped with positive integral weights on its maximal cells. This leads to the realisability question, ubiquitous in tropical geometry, of which weighted polyhedral complexes arise in this manner. Using work of Las Vergnas on the non-existence of tensor products of matroids, we prove that there is no tropical ideal whose variety is the Bergman fan of the direct sum of the Vámos matroid and the uniform matroid of rank two on three elements, and in which all maximal cones have weight one.

Minimal tropical basis for Bergman fan of matroid
The Bergman fan of a matroid is the intersection of tropical hyperplanes defined by the circuits. A tropical basis is a subset of the circuits set that defines the Bergman fan. Yu and Yuster posed a question whether every simple regular matroid has a unique minimal tropical basis of its Bergman fan, and verified it for graphic, cographic matroids and $R_{10}$. We show every simple binary matroid has a unique minimal tropical basis. Since the regular matroid is binary, we positively answered the question.

Matroids arising from electrical networks
Published in Adv. Appl. Math., vol. 137 (2022) • View PublicationBIB
This paper introduces Dirichlet matroids, a generalization of graphic matroids arising from electrical networks. We present four main theorems. First, we exhibit a matroid quotient involving geometric duals of networks embedded in surfaces with boundary. Second, we characterize the Bergman fans of Dirichlet matroids as subfans of graphic Bergman fans. Third, we prove an interlacing result on the real zeros and poles of the trace of the response matrix. And fourth, we bound the coefficients of the precoloring polynomial of a network by the coefficients of the associated chromatic polynomial.

Real Tropical Singularities and Bergman Fans
In this paper, we classify singular real plane tropical curves by means of subdivisions of Newton polytopes. First, we introduce signed Bergman fans (generalizing positive Bergman fans from [AKW06]) that describe real tropicalizations of real linear spaces ([Tab15]). Then, we establish a duality of real plane tropical curves and signed regular subdivisions of the Newton polytope and explore the combinatorics. We define a signed secondary fan that parametrizes real tropical Laurent polynomials and study the subset providing singular real plane tropical curves. A cone of the signed secondary fan is of maximal dimensional type if its corresponding subdivision contains only marked points ([MMS12a]). These cones parametrize real plane tropical curves. We classify singular real plane tropical curves of maximal dimensional type.
Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson cycles of matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson (CSM) cycles of an arbitrary matroid. These are balanced weighted fans supported on the skeleta of the corresponding Bergman fan. In the case that the matroid arises from a complex hyperplane arrangement A, we show that these cycles represent the CSM class of the complement of A. We also prove that for any matroid, the degrees of its CSM cycles are given by the coefficients of (a shift of) the reduced characteristic polynomial, and that CSM cycles are valuations under matroid polytope subdivisions.

L-Infinity optimization to Bergman fans of matroids with an application to phylogenetics

Given a dissimilarity map $δ$ on finite set $X$, the set of ultrametrics (equidistant tree metrics) which are $l^\infty$-nearest to $δ$ is a tropical polytope. We give an internal description of this tropical polytope which we use to derive a polynomial-time checkable test for the condition that all ultrametrics $l^\infty$-nearest to $δ$ have the same tree structure. It was shown by Ardila and Klivans \cite{ardila-klivans2006} that the set of all ultrametrics on a finite set of size $n$ is the Bergman fan associated to the matroid underlying the complete graph on $n$ vertices. Therefore, we derive our results in the more general context of Bergman fans of matroids. This added generality allows our results to be used on dissimilarity maps where only a subset of the entries are known.
