Hodge theory for combinatorial projective bundles
We prove the Hard Lefschetz theorem and Hodge-Riemann relations for certain rings which resemble the cohomology rings of projectivizations of globally generated vector bundles over toric varieties. This proves new cases of the standard conjecture of Hodge type and gives Bloch-Gieseker-type results for tautological classes of matroids.
Chow functions for partially ordered sets
Three decades ago, Stanley and Brenti initiated the study of the Kazhdan--Lusztig--Stanley (KLS) functions, putting on common ground several polynomials appearing in algebraic combinatorics, discrete geometry, and representation theory. In the present paper we develop a theory that parallels the KLS theory. To each kernel in a given poset, we associate a polynomial function that we call the \emph{Chow function}. The Chow function often exhibits remarkable properties, and sometimes encodes the graded dimensions of a cohomology or Chow ring. The framework of Chow functions provides natural polynomial analogs of graded module decompositions that appear in algebraic geometry, but that work for arbitrary posets, even when no graded module decomposition is known to exist. In this general framework, we prove a number of unimodality and positivity results without relying on versions of the Hard Lefschetz theorem. Our framework shows that there is an unexpected relation between positivity and real-rootedness conjectures about chains on face lattices of polytopes by Brenti and Welker, Hilbert--Poincaré series of matroid Chow rings by Ferroni and Schröter, and flag enumerations on Bruhat intervals of Coxeter groups by Billera and Brenti.
Recursive properties of Cohen--Macaulay flag simplicial complexes and Lefschetz decompositions from $f$-vectors
Most applications of the hard Lefschetz theorem related to combinatorial properties of simplicial complexes involve their $h$-vectors. In the context of positivity properties involving $h$-vectors of flag spheres, $f$-vectors with a Lefschetz-type ``Boolean'' decomposition have been studied. In this note, we explore families of flag simplicial complexes where we can see this Boolean decomposition explicitly in terms of transformations connecting different simplicial complexes in this family. Note that we will take complexes in a given dimension to be PL homeomorphic to each other. In particular, the existence of a Boolean decomposition patched from local parts can be phrased in terms of a certain map formally satisfying an analogue of the hard Lefschetz theorem. The map is given by the composition of a double suspension with a ``net single edge subdivision''. Here, the former contributes to the Boolean part and the latter contributes to the disjoint non-Boolean part. The fact that the simplicial complex with the given $f$-vector can be taken to be balanced suggests algebraic versions of maps connected to these decompositions.
On Bott--Samelson rings for Coxeter groups
We study the cohomology ring of the Bott--Samelson variety. We compute an explicit presentation of this ring via Soergel's result, which implies that it is a purely combinatorial invariant. We use the presentation to introduce the Bott--Samelson ring associated with a word in arbitrary Coxeter system by generators and relations. In general, it is a split quadratic complete intersection algebra with a triangular pattern of relations. By a result of Tate, it follows that it is a Koszul algebra and we provide a quadratic (reduced) Gr{ö}bner basis. Furthermore, we prove that it satisfies the whole Kähler package, including the Poincaré duality, the hard Lefschetz theorem, and the Hodge--Riemann bilinear relations.
Log-concavity in Combinatorics
We survey some of the mechanisms used to prove that naturally defined sequences in combinatorics are log-concave. Among these mechanisms are Alexandrov's inequality for mixed discriminants, the Alexandrov Fenchel inequality for mixed volumes, Lorentzian polynomials, and the Hard Lefschetz theorem. We use these mechanisms to prove some new log-concavity and extremal results related to partially ordered sets and matroids. We present joint work with Ramon van Handel and Xinmeng Zeng to give a complete characterization for the extremals of the Kahn-Saks inequality. We extend Stanley's inequality for regular matroids to arbitrary matroids using the technology of Lorentzian polynomials. As a result, we provide a new proof of the weakest Mason conjecture. We also prove necessary and sufficient conditions for the Gorenstein ring associated to the basis generating polynomial of a matroid to satisfy Hodge-Riemann relations of degree one on the facets of the positive orthant.
Chow Rings of Matroids as Permutation Representations
Given a matroid and a group of its matroid automorphisms, we study the induced group action on the Chow ring of the matroid. This turns out to always be a permutation action. Work of Adiprasito, Huh and Katz showed that the Chow ring satisfies Poincaré duality and the Hard Lefschetz theorem. We lift these to statements about this permutation action, and suggest further conjectures in this vein.
The extremals of the Kahn-Saks inequality
A classical result of Kahn and Saks states that given any partially ordered set with two distinguished elements, the number of linear extensions in which the ranks of the distinguished elements differ by $k$ is log-concave as a function of $k$. The log-concave sequences that can arise in this manner prove to exhibit a much richer structure, however, than is evident from log-concavity alone. The main result of this paper is a complete characterization of the extremals of the Kahn-Saks inequality: we obtain a detailed combinatorial understanding of where and what kind of geometric progressions can appear in these log-concave sequences. This settles a partial conjecture of Chan-Pak-Panova, while the analysis uncovers new extremals that were not previously conjectured. The proof relies on a much more general geometric mechanism -- a hard Lefschetz theorem for nef classes that was obtained in the setting of convex polytopes by Shenfeld and Van Handel -- which forms a model for the investigation of such structures in other combinatorial problems.
Numerical characterization of the hard Lefschetz classes of dimension two
We study the numerical characterization of two dimensional hard Lefschetz classes given by the complete intersections of nef classes. In Shenfeld and van Handel's breakthrough work on the characterization of the extremals of the Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality for convex polytopes, they proposed an open question on the algebraic analogue of the characterization. By taking further inspiration from our previous work with Shang on hard Lefschetz theorems for free line bundles, we formulate and refine the conjectural picture more precisely and settle the open question when the collection of nef classes is given by a rearrangement of supercriticality, which in particular includes the big nef collection as a special case. The main results enable us to refine some previous results and study the extremals of Hodge index inequality, and more importantly provide the first series of examples of hard Lefschetz classes of dimension two both in algebraic geometry and analytic geometry, in which one can allow nontrivial augmented base locus and thus drop the semi-ampleness or semi-positivity assumption. As a key ingredient of the numerical characterization, we establish a local Hodge index inequality for Lorentzian polynomials, which is the algebraic analogue of the local Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality obtained by Shenfeld-van Handel for convex polytopes. This result holds in broad contexts, e.g., it holds on a smooth projective variety, on a compact Kähler manifold and on a Lorentzian fan, which contains the Bergman fan of a matroid or polymatroid as a typical example.
On tropical Hodge theory for tropical varieties
To prove log-concavity of the characteristic polynomials of matroids, Adiprasito-Huh-Katz proved the Kähler package (the hard Lefschetz theorem and the Hodge-Riemann bilinear relations) for their Chow rings. Amini-Piquerez generalized it to tropical cohomology of smooth projective tropical varieties. Their proofs were combinatorial. In this paper, we establish tropical Hodge theory except for regularity of solutions of Laplacian, and give a conditional proof of the Kähler package in the same way as compact Kähler manifolds.

We show that the exterior algebra $Λ_{R}\left[α_{1}, \cdots, α_{n}\right]$, which is the cohomology of the torus $T=(S^{1})^{n}$, and the polynomial ring $\mathbb{R}\left[t_{1}, \ldots, t_{n}\right]$, which is the cohomology of the classifying space $B (S^{1})^{n}=\left(\mathbb{C} \mathbb{P}^{\infty}\right)^{n}$, are $S_{n}$-equivariantly log-concave. We do so by explicitly giving the $S_{n}$-representation maps on the appropriate sequences of tensor products of polynomials or exterior powers and proving that these maps satisfy the hard Lefschetz theorem. Furthermore, we prove that the whole Kähler package, including algebraic analogies of the Poincaré duality, hard Lefschetz, and Hodge-Riemann bilinear relations, holds on the corresponding sequences in an equivariant setting.

Motivated by definitions in mixed Hodge theory, we define the weight filtration and the monodromy weight filtration on the combinatorial intersection cohomology of a fan. These filtrations give a natural definition of the multivariable invariants of subdivisions of polytopes, lattice polytopes and fans, namely the mixed $h$-polynomial, the refined limit mixed $h^*$-polynomial, and the mixed $cd$-index, defined by Katz--Stapledon and Dornian--Katz--Tsang. Previously, only the refined limit mixed $h^*$-polynomial had a geometric interpretation, which came from filtrations on the cohomology of a schön hypersurface. Consequently, we generalize a positivity result on the mixed $h$-polynomial by Katz and Stapledon using the relative hard Lefschetz theorem of Karu.

We study the anisotropy theorem for Stanley-Reisner rings of simplicial homology spheres in characteristic 2 by Papadakis and Petrotou. This theorem implies the Hard Lefschetz theorem as well as McMullen's g-conjecture for such spheres. Our first result is an explicit description of the quadratic form. We use this description to prove a conjecture stated by Papadakis and Petrotou. All anisotropy theorems for homology spheres and pseudo-manifolds in characteristic 2 follow from this conjecture. Using a specialization argument, we prove anisotropy for certain homology spheres over the field $\mathbb{Q}$. These results provide another self-contained proof of the g-conjecture for homology spheres in characteristic 2.

For any graph, we show that the graded permutation representation of the graph automorphism group given by matchings is strongly equivariantly log-concave. The proof gives a family of equivariant injections inspired by a combinatorial map of Kratthenthaler and reduces to the hard Lefschetz theorem.
Singular Hodge theory for combinatorial geometries
We introduce the intersection cohomology module of a matroid and prove that it satisfies Poincaré duality, the hard Lefschetz theorem, and the Hodge-Riemann relations. As applications, we obtain proofs of Dowling and Wilson's Top-Heavy conjecture and the nonnegativity of the coefficients of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for all matroids.
Hodge theory for tropical varieties
In this paper we prove that the cohomology of smooth projective tropical varieties verify the tropical analogs of three fundamental theorems which govern the cohomology of complex projective varieties: Hard Lefschetz theorem, Hodge-Riemann relations and monodromy-weight conjecture.
On the way to establish these results, we introduce and prove other results of independent interest. This includes a generalization of the results of Adiprasito-Huh-Katz, Hodge theory for combinatorial geometries, to any unimodular quasi-projective fan having the same support as the Bergman fan of a matroid, a tropical analog for Bergman fans of the pioneering work of Feichtner-Yuzvinsky on cohomology of wonderful compactifications (treated in a separate paper, recalled and used here), a combinatorial study of the tropical version of the Steenbrink spectral sequence, a treatment of Kahler forms in tropical geometry and their associated Hodge-Lefschetz structures, a tropical version of the projective bundle formula, and a result in polyhedral geometry on the existence of quasi-projective unimodular triangulations of polyhedral spaces.

We introduce the conormal fan of a matroid M, which is a Lagrangian analog of the Bergman fan of M. We use the conormal fan to give a Lagrangian interpretation of the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson cycle of M. This allows us to express the h-vector of the broken circuit complex of M in terms of the intersection theory of the conormal fan of M. We also develop general tools for tropical Hodge theory to prove that the conormal fan satisfies Poincaré duality, the hard Lefschetz theorem, and the Hodge-Riemann relations. The Lagrangian interpretation of the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson cycle of M, when combined with the Hodge-Riemann relations for the conormal fan of M, implies Brylawski's and Dawson's conjectures that the h-vectors of the broken circuit complex and the independence complex of M are log-concave sequences.

We give a semi-small orthogonal decomposition of the Chow ring of a matroid M. The decomposition is used to give simple proofs of Poincaré duality, the hard Lefschetz theorem, and the Hodge-Riemann relations for the Chow ring, recovering the main result of [AHK18]. We also show that a similar semi-small orthogonal decomposition holds for the augmented Chow ring of M.
FAQ on the g-theorem and the hard Lefschetz theorem for face rings
This short review is the result of a minicourse at the Sapienza University of Rome the author gave about the proof of the $g$-theorem. We review the hard Lefschetz theorem for simplicial spheres, as well as the theory at its core: perturbations of maps, biased Poincaré pairings and a cobordism argument that relates the Lefschetz property of a manifold to the Lefschetz property on its boundary. We also sketch an alternative argument based on edge-contractions.
The Hard Lefschetz Theorem for PL spheres
We provide a simpler proof of the hard Lefschetz Theorem for face rings of PL spheres: While the algebraic theory remains the same, we replace the geometric constructions by Pachner's Theorem. This simplifies the reasoning for an important special case of the main result of the first author in arxiv:1812.10454, and already implies the McMullen g-conjecture for PL spheres, as well as the Grünbaum-Kalai-Sarkaria conjecture.
Weak Lefschetz Theorem for Simplicial PL-spheres
We prove the Weak Lefschetz theorem for simplicial PL-spheres. This result is weaker than the Hard Lefschetz theorem for more general spheres proved by Adiprasito (arXiv:1812.10454), but the proof here involves simple algebra and avoids the more complicated combinatorics.
