Root-to-Leaf Path Random Walks, Normalized Hodge Laplacians, and Cheeger Inequalities on Simplicial Complexes
We introduce root-to-leaf path random walks on double covers of graded signed graphs and analyze their behavior in a general setting. Viewing simplicial complexes within this framework, we show that these walks induce the natural normalization of the coboundary operator and of the Hodge Laplacians while preserving the basic structural features of combinatorial Hodge theory. We then derive Cheeger inequalities for the upper side of the normalized Hodge spectrum, identify the coherent structures governing these bounds, and combine the up- and down-cases into sharper estimates.

Hodge theory for combinatorial projective bundles
We prove the Hard Lefschetz theorem and Hodge-Riemann relations for certain rings which resemble the cohomology rings of projectivizations of globally generated vector bundles over toric varieties. This proves new cases of the standard conjecture of Hodge type and gives Bloch-Gieseker-type results for tautological classes of matroids.
The Cactus Criterion: When Nonlinear Hodge Theory Reduces to Linear on Graphs
Let $G$ be a finite connected simple graph with a chosen orientation of its edges. For the edge potential $ψ(t)=\cosh t-1,$ we minimize $\sum_{e\in E^\to}ψ(z_e)$ over each affine class $ω+dC^0(G)\subset C^1(G)$. The minimizer is the unique representative satisfying the nonlinear coclosed equation $δ\sinh z=0,$ and hence defines a nonlinear selector $\Picc:C^1(G)\to C^1(G).$ We show that $\Picc$ is real analytic, identify its image as $\imop \Picc=\Mcc=\operatorname{arsinh}(\kerδ),$ and compute its differential as a weighted Hodge projector. In particular, $\Picc$ agrees with the ordinary Hodge projector $\PiH$ to first order at the origin, and the first nonlinear correction is cubic. Our main global theorem is a graph-theoretic criterion: for every admissible edge potential -- even, $C^2$, strictly convex, and non-quadratic -- the associated nonlinear selector coincides with $\PiH$ on all of $C^1(G)$ if and only if $G$ is a cactus graph. Finally, we work out the two-triangle graph, the smallest connected simple obstruction, and record a self-concordant Newton method for computing $\Picc$.
Corrigendum to "Higher Lorentzian polynomials,...in codimension two" [International Mathematics Research Notices, Volume 2025, Issue 13, July 2025, arXiv:2208.05653]
A homogeneous bivariate $d$-form defines an $(i+1)$-rowed Toeplitz matrix for each $i$ between $0$ and $d$. We use Hodge theory and Schur polynomials to prove that if the $(i+1)$-rowed Toeplitz matrix of a form is totally nonnegative, then so is the $i$-rowed one. This fixes a gap in the main result of paper above.

A decomposition theorem for Lefschetz modules
A Lefschetz module is a module over a graded algebra $A$ that satisfies analogues of Poincaré duality, the Hard Lefschetz property, and the Hodge--Riemann relations with respect to an open convex cone $\mathscr{K}$ in the degree one part of $A$. We analyze its decomposition into indecomposable modules over subrings of $A$ that are generated by elements in the closure of $\mathscr{K}$, establishing structural results that parallel the decomposition theorem for morphisms of complex projective varieties. We use our theorems to recover key statements in combinatorial Hodge theory and illuminate the Hodge-theoretic aspects of the decomposition theorem in algebraic geometry.

Vandermonde Cells Through the Lens of Positive Geometry
We study the geometric and algebraic structure of Vandermonde cells, defined as images of the standard probability simplex under the Vandermonde map given by consecutive power sum polynomials. Motivated by their combinatorial equivalence to cyclic polytopes, which are well-known examples of positive geometries and tree amplituhedra, we investigate whether Vandermonde cells admit the structure of positive geometries. We derive explicit parametrizations and algebraic equations for their boundary components, extending known results from the planar case to arbitrary dimensions. By introducing a mild generalization of the notion of positive geometry, allowing singularities within boundary interiors, we show that planar Vandermonde cells naturally fit into this extended framework. Furthermore, we study Vandermonde cells in the setting of Brown-Dupont's mixed Hodge theory formulation of positive geometries, and show that they form a genus zero pair. These results provide a new algebraic and geometric understanding of Vandermonde cells, establishing them as promising examples within the emerging theory of positive geometries.

On the coefficients of interior and exterior polynomials of polymatroids
The Tutte polynomial is an important invariant of graphs and matroids. Chen and Guo \emph{[Adv. in Appl. Math. 166 (2025) 102868.]} proved that for a $(k+1)$-edge connected graph $G$ and for any $i$ with $0\leq i <\frac{3(k+1)}{2}$, $$[y^{g-i}]T_{G}(1,y)=\binom{|V(G)|+i-2}{i}-\sum_{j=0}^{i}\binom{|V(G)|+i-2-j}{i-j}|\mathcal{SC}_{j}(G)|,$$ where $g=|E(G)|-|V(G)|+1$, $\mathcal{SC}_{j}(G)$ is the set of all minimal edge cuts with $j$ edges, $T_{G}(x,y)$ is the Tutte polynomial of the graph $G$, and $[y^{g-i}]T_{G}(1,y)$ denotes the coefficient of $y^{g-i}$ in the polynomial $T_{G}(1,y)$. Recently, Ma, Guan and Jin \emph{[arXiv.2503.06095, 2025.]} generalized this result from graphs to matroids and obtained the dual result on coefficients of $T_M(x,1)$ of matroids $M$ at the same time. In 2013, as a generalization of $T_{G}(x,1)$ and $T_{G}(1,y)$ of graphs $G$ to hypergraphs, Kálmán \emph{[Adv. Math. 244 (2013) 823-873.]} introduced interior and exterior polynomials for connected hypergraphs. Chen and Guo posed a problem that can one generalize these results of graphs to interior and exterior polynomials of hypergraphs? In this paper, we solve it in the affirmative by obtaining results for more general polymatroids, which include the case of hypergraphs and also generalize the results of matroids due to Ma, Guan and Jin. As an application, the sequence consisting of these coefficients on polymatroids is proven to be unimodal, while the unimodality of the whole coefficients of matroids was obtained in 2018 by Adiprasito, Huh and Katz using Hodge theory.

Hodge theory of matroids by star subdivisions
It is known that the Chow ring of a matroid satisfies the Hard Lefschetz property and Hodge Riemann relations. We provide a proof of this theorem by decomposition of the deletion operation into star subdivisions at two dimensional cones. This gives a simple combinatorial proof which avoids intersection cohomology or algebraic geometry.

Homological smoothness and Deligne resolution for tropical fans
We say that a tropical fan is homologically smooth if each of its open subsets verify tropical Poincare duality. A tropical homology manifold is a tropical variety that is locally modelled by open subsets of homologically smooth tropical fans. We show that homological smoothness is a T-stable property in the category of tropical fans. This implies in particular that quasilinear fans are homologically smooth, and tropical varieties locally modelled by them are tropical homology manifolds. Previously, this was known only for locally matroidal tropical varieties. In order to show the above results, we prove a tropical analogue of the Deligne weight spectral sequence for homologically smooth tropical fans. This allows to describe the cohomology of tropical modifications, and will be of importance in our companion work which develops a Hodge theory in the tropical setting.

Thin Simplices via Modular Arithmetic
The local $h^*$-polynomial is a natural invariant of a lattice polytope appearing in Ehrhart theory and Hodge theory. In this work, we study the question posed in [GKZ94] concerning the classification of lattice simplices with vanishing local $h^*$-polynomial. Such simplices are called thin. We relate this question to linear codes and hyperplane arrangements over finite rings. This allows us to obtain a complete classification of the $4$-dimensional thin simplices, extending the previously known results in dimensions up to $3$.

Hodge theory for tropical fans
This paper is the first in a series devoted to the development of a Hodge theory for tropical varieties. We introduce a notion of T-stability for tropical fans and prove that various geometric properties of tropical fans are T-stable. As a consequence, we establish Kähler properties for the Chow ring in a large class of tropical fans, going beyond the case of matroids and their Bergman fans. As a by-product, we obtain a new proof of the Kähler package for combinatorial geometries. The approach makes it possible to deal with tropical fans with general weights.

Hodge Theory of Hypersurfaces in Toric Varieties and Recent Developments in Quantum Physics
This is the author's Habilitation which took place at University of Essen on July 11, 1993. The manuscript contains two parts. The first one is devoted to the author's combinatorial construction of mirrors of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in Gorenstein toric Fano varieties. The second one contains author's results on the variation of mixed Hodge structures of affine hypersurfaces in algebraic tori and their connection to Gelfand-Kapranov-Zelevinsky theory of generalized hypergeometric functions and their applications to the mirror symmetry for Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in toric varieties.

Lorentzian polynomials on cones
Published • View PublicationBIB
Inspired by the theory of hyperbolic polynomials and Hodge theory, we develop the theory of Lorentzian polynomials on cones. This notion captures the Hodge-Riemann relations of degree zero and one. Motivated by fundamental properties of volume polynomials of Chow rings of simplicial fans, we define a class of multivariate polynomials which we call hereditary polynomials. We give a complete and easily checkable characterization of hereditary Lorentzian polynomials. This characterization is used to give elementary and simple proofs of the Heron-Rota-Welsh conjecture for the characteristic polynomial of a matroid, and the Alexandrov-Fenchel inequalities for convex bodies. We then characterize Chow rings of simplicial fans which satisfy the Hodge-Riemann relations of degree zero and one, and we prove that this property only depends on the support of the fan. Several different characterizations of Lorentzian polynomials on cones are provided.

On tropical Hodge theory for tropical varieties
To prove log-concavity of the characteristic polynomials of matroids, Adiprasito-Huh-Katz proved the Kähler package (the hard Lefschetz theorem and the Hodge-Riemann bilinear relations) for their Chow rings. Amini-Piquerez generalized it to tropical cohomology of smooth projective tropical varieties. Their proofs were combinatorial. In this paper, we establish tropical Hodge theory except for regularity of solutions of Laplacian, and give a conditional proof of the Kähler package in the same way as compact Kähler manifolds.

Essence of independence: Hodge theory of matroids since June Huh
Published • View PublicationBIB
Matroids are combinatorial abstractions of independence, a ubiquitous notion that pervades many branches of mathematics. June Huh and his collaborators recently made spectacular breakthroughs by developing a Hodge theory of matroids that resolved several long-standing conjectures in matroid theory. We survey the main results in this development and ideas behind them.

Signed permutohedra, delta-matroids, and beyond

We establish a connection between the algebraic geometry of the type B permutohedral toric variety and the combinatorics of delta-matroids. Using this connection, we compute the volume and lattice point counts of type B generalized permutohedra. Applying tropical Hodge theory to a new framework of "tautological classes of delta-matroids," modeled after certain vector bundles associated to realizable delta-matroids, we establish the log-concavity of a Tutte-like invariant for a broad family of delta-matroids that includes all realizable delta-matroids. Our results include new log-concavity statements for all (ordinary) matroids as special cases.

Filtrations on combinatorial intersection cohomology and invariants of subdivisions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by definitions in mixed Hodge theory, we define the weight filtration and the monodromy weight filtration on the combinatorial intersection cohomology of a fan. These filtrations give a natural definition of the multivariable invariants of subdivisions of polytopes, lattice polytopes and fans, namely the mixed $h$-polynomial, the refined limit mixed $h^*$-polynomial, and the mixed $cd$-index, defined by Katz--Stapledon and Dornian--Katz--Tsang. Previously, only the refined limit mixed $h^*$-polynomial had a geometric interpretation, which came from filtrations on the cohomology of a schön hypersurface. Consequently, we generalize a positivity result on the mixed $h$-polynomial by Katz and Stapledon using the relative hard Lefschetz theorem of Karu.

Tropical fans and normal complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Associated to any divisor in the Chow ring of a simplicial tropical fan, we construct a family of polytopal complexes, called normal complexes, which we propose as an analogue of the well-studied notion of normal polytopes from the setting of complete fans. We describe certain closed convex polyhedral cones of divisors for which the "volume" of each divisor in the cone - that is, the degree of its top power - is equal to the volume of the associated normal complexes. For the Bergman fan of any matroid with building set, we prove that there exists an open family of such cones of divisors with nonempty interiors. We view the theory of normal complexes developed in this paper as a polytopal model underlying the combinatorial Hodge theory pioneered by Adiprasito, Huh, and Katz.

A note on a local combinatorial formula for the Euler class of a PL spherical fiber bundle
We present a local combinatorial formula for the Euler class of a $n$-dimen\-si\-onal PL spherical fiber bundle as a rational number $e_{\it CH}$ associated to a chain of $n+1$ abstract subdivisions of abstract $n$-spherical PL cell complexes. The number $e_{\it CH}$ is a combinatorial (or matrix) Hodge theory twisting cochain in Guy Hirsch's homology model of the bundle associated with PL combinatorics of the bundle.
