Adjoints of Morphisms of Neural Codes
A combinatorial code $\mathcal{C}$ is a collection of subsets of $[n]$, or equivalently a set of points in $\{0,1\}^n$. A morphism of codes is a map from one combinatorial code to another such that the coordinates of points in the image can be expressed as products of coordinates in the domain. By representing morphisms of codes as binary matrices, we show that any morphism of codes is part of a Galois connection where its adjoint is boolean multiplication by the representative matrix. We use this to characterize those morphisms of codes which allow to factor a boolean matrix, with applications to estimating boolean matrix rank.
Morphisms also induce a partial order on (isomorphism classes of) codes. We determine the covering relations in this partial order for which the two adjoint maps are mutual inverses in terms of \emph{free} neurons, a combinatorial condition on the index corresponding to the covering maps. We introduce the \emph{defect} of a code as a new tool to study this poset and show that defect decreases by exactly 0 or 1 under a covering map.

A homogeneous bivariate $d$-form defines an $(i+1)$-rowed Toeplitz matrix for each $i$ between $0$ and $d$. We use Hodge theory and Schur polynomials to prove that if the $(i+1)$-rowed Toeplitz matrix of a form is totally nonnegative, then so is the $i$-rowed one. This fixes a gap in the main result of paper above.
The MacaulayPosets package for Macaulay2
We introduce the package MacaulayPosets written for the computational algebra system Macaulay2. This package utilized the poset data type introduced in the Posets package and offers functionality for studying the Macaulay property for posets, particularly those which arise as monomial posets of commutative rings. A Macaulay poset is characterized by a ranked structure and a total order that interacts harmoniously with the partial order, enabling the establishment of bounds on the sizes of subsets of a given rank within an order ideal.
Boolean Rank via Monomial Ideals
Boolean matrix factorization (BMF) has many applications in data mining, bioinformatics, and network analysis. The goal of BMF is to decompose a given binary matrix as the Boolean product of two smaller binary matrices, revealing underlying structure in the data. When interpreting a binary matrix as the adjacency matrix of a bipartite graph, BMF is equivalent to the NP-hard biclique cover problem.
By approaching this problem through the lens of commutative algebra, we utilize algebraic structures and techniques--particularly the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of combinatorially defined ideals--to establish new lower bounds for Boolean matrix rank.
Constructions of Macaulay Posets and Macaulay Rings
A poset is Macaulay if its partial order and an additional total order interact well. Analogously, a ring is Macaulay if the partial order defined on its monomials by division interacts nicely with any total monomial order. We investigate methods of obtaining new structures through combining Macaulay rings and posets by means of certain operations inspired by topology. We examine whether these new structures retain the Macaulay property, identifying new classes of posets and rings for which the operations preserve the Macaulay property.

A major open question in the theory of Gorenstein liaison is whether or not every arithmetically Cohen--Macaulay subscheme of $\mathbb{P}^n$ can be G-linked to a complete intersection. Migliore and Nagel showed that, if such a scheme is generically Gorenstein (e.g., reduced), then, after re-embedding so that it is viewed as a subscheme of $\mathbb{P}^{n+1}$, indeed it can be G-linked to a complete intersection. Motivated by this result, we consider techniques for constructing G-links on a scheme from G-links on a closely related reduced scheme.
Polarization is a tool for producing a squarefree monomial ideal from an arbitrary monomial ideal. Basic double G-links on squarefree monomial ideals can be induced from vertex decompositions of their Stanley--Reisner complexes. Given a monomial ideal $I$ and a vertex decomposition of the Stanley--Reisner complex of its polarization $P(I)$, we give conditions that allow for the lifting of an associated basic double G-link of $P(I)$ to a basic double G-link of $I$ itself. We use the relationship we develop in the process to show that the Stanley--Reisner complexes of polarizations of stable Cohen--Macaulay monomial ideals are vertex decomposable.
We then introduce and study polarization of a Gröbner basis of an arbitrary homogeneous ideal and give a relationship between geometric vertex decomposition of a polarization and elementary G-biliaison that is analogous to our result on vertex decomposition and basic double G-linkage.

Symmetric strongly shifted ideals are a class of monomial ideals which come equipped with an action of the symmetric group and are analogous to the well-studied class of strongly stable monomial ideals. In this paper we focus on algebraic and combinatorial properties of symmetric strongly shifted ideals. On the algebraic side, we elucidate properties that pertain to behavior under ideal operations, primary decomposition, and the structure of their Rees algebra. On the combinatorial side, we develop a notion of partition Borel generators which leads to connections to discrete polymatroids, convex polytopes, and permutohedral toric varieties.

The aims of this work are to study Rees algebras of filtrations of monomial ideals associated to covering polyhedra of rational matrices with non-negative entries and non-zero columns using combinatorial optimization and integer programming, and to study powers of monomial ideals and their integral closures using irreducible decompositions and polyhedral geometry. We study the Waldschmidt constant and the ic-resurgence of the filtration associated to a covering polyhedron and show how to compute these constants using linear programming. Then we show a lower bound for the ic-resurgence of the ideal of covers of a graph and prove that the lower bound is attained when the graph is perfect. We also show lower bounds for the ic-resurgence of the edge ideal of a graph and give an algorithm to compute the asymptotic resurgence of squarefree monomial ideals. A classification of when Newton's polyhedron is the irreducible polyhedron is presented using integral closure.
Convex bodies and asymptotic invariants for powers of monomial ideals

Continuing a well established tradition of associating convex bodies to monomial ideals, we initiate a program to construct asymptotic Newton polyhedra from decompositions of monomial ideals. This is achieved by forming a graded family of ideals based on a given decomposition. We term these graded families powers since they generalize the notions of ordinary and symbolic powers. Asymptotic invariants for these graded families are expressed as solutions to linear optimization problems on the respective convex bodies. This allows to establish a lower bound on the Waldschmidt constant of a monomial ideal by means of a more easily computable invariant, which we introduce under the name of naive Waldschmidt constant.

We study several consequences of the packing problem, a conjecture from combinatorial optimization, using algebraic invariants of square-free monomial ideals. While the packing problem is currently unresolved, we successfully settle the validity of its consequences. Our work prompts additional questions and conjectures, which are presented together with their motivation.

This paper provides insights into the role of symmetry in studying polynomial functions vanishing to high order on an algebraic variety. The varieties we study are singular loci of hyperplane arrangements in projective space, with emphasis on arrangements arising from complex reflection groups. We provide minimal sets of equations for the radical ideals defining these singular loci and study containments between the ordinary and symbolic powers of these ideals.

We introduce a new class of monomial ideals which we call symmetric shifted ideals. Symmetric shifted ideals are fixed by the natural action of the symmetric group and, within the class of monomial ideals fixed by this action, they can be considered as an analogue of stable monomial ideals within the class of monomial ideals. We show that a symmetric shifted ideal has linear quotients and compute its (equivariant) graded Betti numbers. As an application of this result, we obtain several consequences for graded Betti numbers of symbolic powers of defining ideals of star configurations.

Motivated by notions from coding theory, we study the generalized minimum distance (GMD) function $δ_I(d,r)$ of a graded ideal $I$ in a polynomial ring over an arbitrary field using commutative algebraic methods. It is shown that $δ_I$ is non-decreasing as a function of $r$ and non-increasing as a function of $d$. For vanishing ideals over finite fields, we show that $δ_I$ is strictly decreasing as a function of $d$ until it stabilizes. We also study algebraic invariants of Geramita ideals. Those ideals are graded, unmixed, $1$-dimensional and their associated primes are generated by linear forms. We also examine GMD functions of complete intersections and show some special cases of two conjectures of Tohăneanu--Van Tuyl and Eisenbud-Green-Harris.
Frieze varieties : A characterization of the finite-tame-wild trichotomy for acyclic quivers

We introduce a new class of algebraic varieties which we call frieze varieties. Each frieze variety is determined by an acyclic quiver. The frieze variety is defined in an elementary recursive way by constructing a set of points in affine space. From a more conceptual viewpoint, the coordinates of these points are specializations of cluster variables in the cluster algebra associated to the quiver.
We give a new characterization of the finite--tame--wild trichotomy for acyclic quivers in terms of their frieze varieties. We show that an acyclic quiver is representation finite, tame, or wild, respectively, if and only if the dimension of its frieze variety is $0,1$, or $\ge2$, respectively.

Given a squarefree monomial ideal $I \subseteq R =k[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$, we show that $\widehatα(I)$, the Waldschmidt constant of $I$, can be expressed as the optimal solution to a linear program constructed from the primary decomposition of $I$. By applying results from fractional graph theory, we can then express $\widehatα(I)$ in terms of the fractional chromatic number of a hypergraph also constructed from the primary decomposition of $I$. Moreover, expressing $\widehatα(I)$ as the solution to a linear program enables us to prove a Chudnovsky-like lower bound on $\widehatα(I)$, thus verifying a conjecture of Cooper-Embree-Hà-Hoefel for monomial ideals in the squarefree case. As an application, we compute the Waldschmidt constant and the resurgence for some families of squarefree monomial ideals. For example, we determine both constants for unions of general linear subspaces of $\mathbb{P}^n$ with few components compared to $n$, and we find the Waldschmidt constant for the Stanley-Reisner ideal of a uniform matroid.

Let $\mathcal{V}=\bigsqcup_{i=0}^n\mathcal{V}_i$ be the lattice of subspaces of the $n$-dimensional vector space over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ and let $\mathcal{A}$ be the graded Gorenstein algebra defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ which has $\mathcal{V}$ as a $\mathbb{Q}$ basis. Let $F$ be the Macaulay dual generator for $\mathcal{A}$. We compute explicitly the Hessian determinant $|\frac{\partial ^2F}{\partial X_i \partial X_j}|$ evaluated at the point $X_1 = X_2 = \cdots = X_N=1$ and relate it to the determinant of the incidence matrix between $\mathcal{V}_1$ and $\mathcal{V}_{n-1}$. Our exploration is motivated by the fact that both of these matrices arise naturally in the study of the Sperner property of the lattice and the Lefschetz property for the graded Artinian Gorenstein algebra associated to it.
