Signless Laplacian spectral conditions for rainbow matchings in a collection of bipartite graphs
Let ${\cal G}=\{{G_1},\ldots,{G_k}\}$ be a collection of (not necessarily distinct) bipartite graphs on the same vertex bipartition $(X,Y)$ with $|X|=a$ and $|Y|=b$, where $k$, $a$ and $b$ are positive integers. A collection ${\cal G}$ of bipartite graphs admits a rainbow matching if there exists a set of pairwise disjoint edges such that any two edges are from distinct bipartite graphs of ${\cal G}$. Denote by $q({G})$ the signless Laplacian spectral radius of a bipartite graph $G$. In this paper, we prove that if $q({G_i})\ge b+k-1+\sqrt{(k-1)b} $ for each ${G_i}\in{\cal G}=\{{G_1}, \ldots, {G_k}\}$, where $2\leq k\leq a\leq b$, then ${\cal G}$ admits a rainbow matching of size $k$ unless ${G_1}={G_2}=\cdots={G_k}\cong{K_{k-1,b}}\cup\overline{K_{a-k+1}}$, by using the shifting technique.

Spider networks
In this investigation we study a family of networks, called spiders, which covers a range of networks going from chains to complete graphs. These spiders are characterized by three parameters: the number of nodes in the core, the number of legs at each core node, and the length of these legs. Keeping two of the three parameters constant we investigate if spiders are small worlds in the sense recently defined by Egghe.

Bipartite Determinantal Ideals and concurrent vertex maps
Bipartite determinantal ideals are introduced by Illian and the author as a vast generalization of the classical determinantal ideals intensively studied in commutative algebra, algebraic geometry, representation theory and combinatorics. We introduce a combinatorial model called concurrent vertex maps to describe the Stanley-Reisner complex of the initial ideal of any bipartite determinantal ideal, and study properties and applications of this model including vertex decomposability, shelling orders, formulas of the Hilbert series and $h$-polynomials.

Chain decompositions of q,t-Catalan numbers: tail extensions and flagpole partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
This article is part of an ongoing investigation of the combinatorics of $q,t$-Catalan numbers $\textrm{Cat}_n(q,t)$. We develop a structure theory for integer partitions based on the partition statistics dinv, deficit, and minimum triangle height. Our goal is to decompose the infinite set of partitions of deficit $k$ into a disjoint union of chains $\mathcal{C}_μ$ indexed by partitions of size $k$. Among other structural properties, these chains can be paired to give refinements of the famous symmetry property $\textrm{Cat}_n(q,t)=\textrm{Cat}_n(t,q)$. Previously, we introduced a map that builds the tail part of each chain $\mathcal{C}_μ$. Our first main contribution here is to extend this map to construct larger second-order tails for each chain. Second, we introduce new classes of partitions called flagpole partitions and generalized flagpole partitions. Third, we describe a recursive construction for building the chain $\mathcal{C}_μ$ for a (generalized) flagpole partition $μ$, assuming that the chains indexed by certain specific smaller partitions (depending on $μ$) are already known. We also give some enumerative and asymptotic results for flagpole partitions and their generalized versions.

On the ordering of the Markov numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Markov numbers are the positive integers that appear in the solutions of the equation $x^2+y^2+z^2=3xyz$. These numbers are a classical subject in number theory and have important ramifications in hyperbolic geometry, algebraic geometry and combinatorics. It is known that the Markov numbers can be labeled by the lattice points $(q,p)$ in the first quadrant and below the diagonal whose coordinates are coprime. In this paper, we consider the following question. Given two lattice points, can we say which of the associated Markov numbers is larger? A complete answer to this question would solve the uniqueness conjecture formulated by Frobenius in 1913. We give a partial answer in terms of the slope of the line segment that connects the two lattice points. We prove that the Markov number with the greater $x$-coordinate is larger than the other if the slope is at least $-\frac{8}{7}$ and that it is smaller than the other if the slope is at most $-\frac{5}{4}$. As a special case, namely when the slope is equal to 0 or 1, we obtain a proof of two conjectures from Aigner's book "Markov's theorem and 100 years of the uniqueness conjecture".
Chain Decompositions of $q,t$-Catalan Numbers via Local Chains
Published • View PublicationBIB
The $q,t$-Catalan number $\mathrm{Cat}_n(q,t)$ enumerates integer partitions contained in an $n\times n$ triangle by their dinv and external area statistics. The paper [LLL18 (Lee, Li, Loehr, SIAM J. Discrete Math. 32(2018))] proposed a new approach to understanding the symmetry property $\mathrm{Cat}_n(q,t)=\mathrm{Cat}_n(t,q)$ based on decomposing the set of all integer partitions into infinite chains. Each such global chain $\mathcal{C}_μ$ has an opposite chain $\mathcal{C}_{μ^*}$; these combine to give a new small slice of $\mathrm{Cat}_n(q,t)$ that is symmetric in $q$ and $t$. Here we advance the agenda of [LLL18] by developing a new general method for building the global chains $\mathcal{C}_μ$ from smaller elements called local chains. We define a local opposite property for local chains that implies the needed opposite property of the global chains. This local property is much easier to verify in specific cases compared to the corresponding global property. We apply this machinery to construct all global chains for partitions with deficit at most $11$. This proves that for all $n$, the terms in $\mathrm{Cat}_n(q,t)$ of degree at least $\binom{n}{2}-11$ are symmetric in $q$ and $t$.

Newton polytopes of rank 3 cluster variables
Published • View PublicationBIB
We characterize the cluster variables of skew-symmetrizable cluster algebras of rank 3 by their Newton polytopes. The Newton polytope of the cluster variable $z$ is the convex hull of the set of all $\mathbf{p}\in\mathbb{Z}^3$ such that the Laurent monomial ${\bf x}^{\mathbf{p}}$ appears with nonzero coefficient in the Laurent expansion of $z$ in the cluster ${\bf x}$. We give an explicit construction of the Newton polytope in terms of the exchange matrix and the denominator vector of the cluster variable. Along the way, we give a new proof of the fact that denominator vectors of non-initial cluster variables are non-negative in a cluster algebra of arbitrary rank.
Frieze varieties : A characterization of the finite-tame-wild trichotomy for acyclic quivers
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a new class of algebraic varieties which we call frieze varieties. Each frieze variety is determined by an acyclic quiver. The frieze variety is defined in an elementary recursive way by constructing a set of points in affine space. From a more conceptual viewpoint, the coordinates of these points are specializations of cluster variables in the cluster algebra associated to the quiver. We give a new characterization of the finite--tame--wild trichotomy for acyclic quivers in terms of their frieze varieties. We show that an acyclic quiver is representation finite, tame, or wild, respectively, if and only if the dimension of its frieze variety is $0,1$, or $\ge2$, respectively.

An Introduction to Supersymmetric Cluster Algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we propose the notion of cluster superalgebras which is a supersymmetric version of the classical cluster algebras introduced by Fomin and Zelevinsky. We show that the symplectic-orthogonal supergroup $SpO(2|1)$ admits a cluster superalgebra structure and as a consequence of this, we deduce that the supercommutative superalgebra generated by all the entries of a superfrieze is a subalgebra of a cluster superalgebra. We also show that the coordinate superalgebra of the super Grassmannian $G(2|0; 4|1)$ of chiral conformal superspace (that is, $(2|0)$ planes inside the superspace $\mathbb C^{4|1}$) is a quotient of a cluster superalgebra.

The $(n,k)$-star graphs are an important class of interconnection networks that generalize star graphs, which are superior to hypercubes. In this paper, we continue the work begun by Cheng et al.~(Graphs and Combinatorics 2017) and complete the classification of all the $(n,k)$-star graphs that are Cayley.

New Combinatorial Formulas for Cluster Monomials of Type A Quivers
Published • View PublicationBIB
Lots of research focuses on the combinatorics behind various bases of cluster algebras. This paper studies the natural basis of a type A cluster algebra, which consists of all cluster monomials. We introduce a new kind of combinatorial formulas for the cluster monomials in terms of the so-called globally compatible collections. We give bijective proofs of these formulas by comparing with the well-known combinatorial models of the T-paths and of the perfect matchings in a snake diagram. For cluster variables of a type A cluster algebra, we give a bijection that relates our new formula with the theta functions constructed by Gross, Hacking, Keel and Kontsevich.

A Combinatorial Approach to the Symmetry of $q,t$-Catalan Numbers
Published in SIAM J. Discrete Math (SIDMA). 32 (2018) no.1, 191--232 • View PublicationBIB
The \emph{$q,t$-Catalan numbers} $C_n(q,t)$ are polynomials in $q$ and $t$ that reduce to the ordinary Catalan numbers when $q=t=1$. These polynomials have important connections to representation theory, algebraic geometry, and symmetric functions. Haglund and Haiman discovered combinatorial formulas for $C_n(q,t)$ as weighted sums of Dyck paths (or equivalently, integer partitions contained in a staircase shape). This paper undertakes a combinatorial investigation of the joint symmetry property $C_n(q,t)=C_n(t,q)$. We conjecture some structural decompositions of Dyck objects into "mutually opposite" subcollections that lead to a bijective explanation of joint symmetry in certain cases. A key new idea is the construction of infinite chains of partitions that are independent of $n$ but induce the joint symmetry for all $n$ simultaneously. Using these methods, we prove combinatorially that for $0\leq k\leq 9$ and all $n$, the terms in $C_n(q,t)$ of total degree $\binom{n}{2}-k$ have the required symmetry property.

A Combinatorial Formula for Certain Elements of Upper Cluster Algebras
Published in SIGMA 11 (2015), 049, 24 pages • View PublicationBIB
We develop an elementary formula for certain non-trivial elements of upper cluster algebras. These elements have positive coefficients. We show that when the cluster algebra is acyclic these elements form a basis. Using this formula, we show that each non-acyclic skew-symmetric cluster algebra of rank 3 is properly contained in its upper cluster algebra.

Positivity and tameness in rank 2 cluster algebras
Published in J. Algebraic Combin. 40 (2014), no. 3, 823--840 • View PublicationBIB
We study the relationship between the positivity property in a rank 2 cluster algebra, and the property of such an algebra to be tame. More precisely, we show that a rank 2 cluster algebra has a basis of indecomposable positive elements if and only if it is of finite or affine type. This statement disagrees with a conjecture by Fock and Goncharov.

Combinatorics of certain higher $q,t$-Catalan polynomials: chains, joint symmetry, and the Garsia-Haiman formula
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics 39 (2014), no. 4, 749--781 • View PublicationBIB
The higher $q,t$-Catalan polynomial $C^{(m)}_n(q,t)$ can be defined combinatorially as a weighted sum of lattice paths contained in certain triangles, or algebraically as a complicated sum of rational functions indexed by partitions of $n$. This paper proves the equivalence of the two definitions for all $m\geq 1$ and all $n\leq 4$. We also give a bijective proof of the joint symmetry property $C^{(m)}_n(q,t)=C^{(m)}_n(t,q)$ for all $m\geq 1$ and all $n\leq 4$. The proof is based on a general approach for proving joint symmetry that dissects a collection of objects into chains, and then passes from a joint symmetry property of initial points and terminal points to joint symmetry of the full set of objects. Further consequences include unimodality results and specific formulas for the coefficients in $C^{(m)}_n(q,t)$ for all $m\geq 1$ and all $n\leq 4$. We give analogous results for certain rational-slope $q,t$-Catalan polynomials.

On natural maps from strata of quiver Grassmannians to ordinary Grassmannians
Published in Contemporary Mathematics, volume 592, 2013, 199--214 • View PublicationBIB
Caldero and Zelevinsky studied the geometry of quiver Grassmannians for the Kronecker quiver and computed their Euler characteristics by examining natural stratification of quiver Grassmannians. We consider generalized Kronecker quivers and compute virtual Poincare polynomials of certain varieties which are the images under projections from strata of quiver Grassmannians to ordinary Grassmannians. In contrast to the Kronecker quiver case, these polynomials do not necessarily have positive coefficients. The key ingredient is the explicit formula for noncommutative cluster variables given by Ralf Schiffler and the first author.

Greedy elements in rank 2 cluster algebras
Published in Selecta Mathematica. New Series, 20 (2014), no. 1, 57--82 • View PublicationBIB
A lot of recent activity in the theory of cluster algebras has been directed towards various constructions of "natural" bases in them. One of the approaches to this problem was developed several years ago by P.Sherman - A.Zelevinsky who have shown that the indecomposable positive elements form an integer basis in any rank 2 cluster algebra of finite or affine type. It is strongly suspected (but not proved) that this property does not extend beyond affine types. Here we go around this difficulty by constructing a new basis in any rank 2 cluster algebra that we call the greedy basis. It consists of a special family of indecomposable positive elements that we call greedy elements. Inspired by a recent work of K.Lee - R.Schiffler and D.Rupel, we give explicit combinatorial expressions for greedy elements using the language of Dyck paths.

Limits of Modified Higher (q,t)-Catalan Numbers
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 20(3) (2013), #P4 • View PublicationBIB
The $q,t$-Catalan numbers can be defined using rational functions, geometry related to Hilbert schemes, symmetric functions, representation theory, Dyck paths, partition statistics, or Dyck words. After decades of intensive study, it was eventually proved that all these definitions are equivalent. In this paper, we study the similar situation for higher $q,t$-Catalan numbers, where the equivalence of the algebraic and combinatorial definitions is still conjectural. We compute the limits of several versions of the modified higher $q,t$-Catalan numbers and show that these limits equal the generating function for integer partitions. We also identify certain coefficients of the higher $q,t$-Catalan numbers as enumerating suitable integer partitions, and we make some conjectures on the homological significance of the Bergeron-Garsia nabla operator.

Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials and drift configurations
Published in Algebra & Number Theory J., Vol. 5 (2011), No. 5, 595-626 • View PublicationBIB
The coefficients of the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials $P_{v,w}(q)$ are nonnegative integers that are upper semicontinuous on Bruhat order. Conjecturally, the same properties hold for $h$-polynomials $H_{v,w}(q)$ of local rings of Schubert varieties. This suggests a parallel between the two families of polynomials. We prove our conjectures for Grassmannians, and more generally, covexillary Schubert varieties in complete flag varieties, by deriving a combinatorial formula for $H_{v,w}(q)$. We introduce \emph{drift configurations} to formulate a new and compatible combinatorial rule for $P_{v,w}(q)$. From our rules we deduce, for these cases, the coefficient-wise inequality $P_{v,w}(q)\preceq H_{v,w}(q)$.

Some degenerations of Kazhdan-Lusztig ideals and multiplicities of Schubert varieties
Published in Advances in Mathematics, Volume 229, Issue 1, 15 (2012), 633--667 • View PublicationBIB
We study Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity for points of Schubert varieties in the complete flag variety, by Groebner degenerations of the Kazhdan-Lusztig ideal. In the covexillary case, we give a positive combinatorial rule for multiplicity by establishing (with a Groebner basis) a reduced and equidimensional limit whose Stanley-Reisner simplicial complex is homeomorphic to a shellable ball or sphere. We show that multiplicity counts the number of facets of this complex. We also obtain a formula for the Hilbert series of the local ring. In particular, our work gives a multiplicity rule for Grassmannian Schubert varieties, providing alternative statements and proofs to formulae of [Lakshmibai-Weyman '90], [Rosenthal-Zelevinsky '01], [Krattenthaler '01], [Kreiman-Lakshmibai '04] and [Woo-Yong '09]. We suggest extensions of our methodology to the general case.
